It’s an honorary rosé. Ideal with pissaladière or this dish of chicken Milanese with spaghetti pomodoro and braised chicory. It has superb acidity and fresh cranberry fruit. An unusual Valentine choice perhaps?

A JuicyJumilla today- this unusual organic Spanish pink enjoys a short stay in oak which gives it structure without heaviness on the palate. Produced from Syrah, a spicy favourite grape of mine – and Petit Verdot which has its origins in Bordeaux. This would be a striking choice for a sophisticated Valentine supper à deux. There’s a hint of aniseed here and wild herbs on the finish. What a great match for wild salmon or trout. I award it 18 points. The lovely wood carving comes from Cape Verde by the way.

For all of you emerging, blinking, from Dry January- may I present an exceptional Prosecco for your consideration. This delicate lychee pink fizz has a subtle Italian elegance, delicate stone fruit flavour and an alcohol content of only 10.5% to ease you toward … Valentine’s Day!? My suggestion would be to consume this most waking hours on that special day. The great virtue of Prosecco is its gentler fizz (compared to Champagne) and its versatility. I award this 17 points. It’s chilly, so I crave Cabernet Sauvignon at this time of year. Or – it’s Chile, so I crave its Cabernet! And here it is in delicious organic form, with Syrah to boot. And a truly satisfying pink to accompany even the heartiest fare. The remarkable story of Champagne Pommery is really the story of one extraordinary woman: Madame Louise Pommery, who took over the business after her husband’s death and proceeded to transform it into one of Champagne’s greatest houses. Welcome to the far side of Christmas! To make life simpler how about a screw cap unbreakable bottle of delicious organic Sicilian pink? I already know and love this versatile wine (17.5 points) but in addition to being delicious, it also scores strong eco points. The aluminium bottle is lighter than glass and reusable/ recyclable- the wine is vegan friendly and made with one of my favourite grape varieties- Syrah. Subtle pink pepper notes here. I also enjoy the catchphrase on the label- ‘Pairs well with great company’. Well said. Saluti!

My favourite piece of ballet music? The Rose Adagio (appropriately enough) from The Sleeping Beauty- La Belle au Bois Dormant in French. This enchanting fizz from the romantic Anjou region is my choice for your 12th Pink of Christmas. Crémant de Loire is a terrific alternative to Champagne, produced by the same method. This organic example is based on subtle, nutty Cabernet Franc and available from With its redcurrant bite and brioche finish it would be a terrific choice with gammon or salmon on Christmas Eve. Stylish presentation and a mouthful of fruit and Mediterranean spice inside. Perfect balance. This is a wine to savour, not swig. Try it with a mince pie to appreciate its depth of flavour. Have you heard of Pêches de Vigne? These scrumptious little fruit appear around grape harvest time in France. And my tenth Pink of Christmas is redolent of that heady scent. Pure Mirabeau has white peach on the nose, then a crispness on the palate more like a typical white wine than a rosé. Best of both worlds, for those who like their Provence pink dry. This is the perfect apéro wine. Great to serve as a palate sharpener before the rich food of this season. Plus, Mirabeau has excellent eco credentials and deserves our support. I note that and are currently fighting it out on price at £14 per bottle. Not bad at all for a wine I rate at 18.5 points.

Organic, vegan, Sicilian- intriguing! My Ninth Wine of Christmas is a sun-kissed and aromatic pink with bags of personality, as befits its origins. Only 12.5% so a brilliant party wine. Pair this with salami, bruschetta- or anything with anchovies ! I award it 17 points.
