What are dental implants?

Dental implants are titanium pins that are placed inside the bone and replace the root.   After the pin is implanted in the bone, it will receive the crown, or tooth portion, of the implant.

Why would someone need dental implants?

Dental implants replace a lost tooth.  Anyone who has lost a tooth due to an accident, a tooth removal, periodontal disease, tooth decay, or another condition that resulted in a lost tooth could need a dental implant.  Dental implants can replace single teeth, replace multiple teeth, provide support to hold dentures in place, be used for full mouth fixed restorations, preserve the bone once teeth/tooth is lost.

How long does the entire process take?

The process varies – anywhere from one day to 10 months.  If the bone has to be regenerated, so that the implant has something to be supported by, that could take 6 months to rebuild the bone and another 4 months for the implant to attach to the bone.

Who is a good candidate for implants?

Almost anyone is a candidate for implants.  Patients who may be less of a candidate include smokers, those with a disease such as diabetes, patients who have had radiation therapy, or those with any condition or treatment that reduces the patient’s healing capacity.  This can reduce the chance that the implant will work.  Most patients, though, are a good candidate for implants and should always be evaluated before other alternatives are considered.

What is sedation dentistry?

When you are sedated, you are still awake and can respond to verbal commands.  You are not fully present, and you may not remember the procedure.  The sedation eliminates the fear related to the dental visit.

Why would you choose sedation dentistry?

Sedation can help patients who have fear and anxiety around the whole dental process.  Also, for those patients who have a strong gag reflex or can’t get numb.

Is sedation dentstry safe?

Yes, it is very safe.  The doctor starts with the minimum dose and monitors your level of sedation.  If needed, the dose can be increased incrementally, so you are never over sedated.

Who is a good candidate for sedation dentistry?

You must be 18 or over, and healthy with no complications.  You also will be at the office for a minimum of 2 hours.

What does the sedation feel like?

You feel very calm and relaxed.  The sedation takes away all of the anxiety over the dental visit or procedure.

In 1999 my husband and I met at Roseville High School, we were 15 and 16 years old. Not even able to drive our parents grew to know each other and us very well. As young as we were we fell in love, even talked about getting married and having kids; our pre-planned wedding date was December 8, 2008, nine years after the day that we met. We set this date because we both had planned to go to college, so at 15 years old we figured we would be done with schooling by 2008. We ended up dating for only year and a half and ended up going our separate ways. Nine years later after college, we found each other on myspace and realized that we were both living back in Roseville.We decided to meet, that was December 28, 2008 (just 20 days after our pre-planned wedding date). We spent all of our time together, traveled around California. Six months later, July 27, 2009 we got married on Coronado Island. The next month we found out we were expecting. Our son was born on April 21, 2010. And now we are living happily ever after.
