On Sunday July 4th, patriots from our community will honor our country by proudly carrying the flags of our country, our state, our POW & MIA Service Members and our Combat Wounded 8 miles along the shore of North Myrtle Beach. A set of flags will be carried from both the north and south ends along the beach with the marchers arriving at Main Street in North Myrtle Beach just prior to the Salute from the Shore (https://SaluteFromTheShore.org/) flyover at 1 pm. A short ceremony honoring our Active Duty Military Service Members, Military Veterans and The United States will follow the flyover.
Producing this event requires the support and participation of over 100 patriots from our community. Drivers who transport the marchers to and from their assigned segments along the beach are the backbone of that volunteer group. The Rotary Satellite Club of Little River Sunset Edition will be coordinating the drivers for this year’s event and we need your support.
The event requires a total of six (6) drivers with at least four (4) backup drivers in case of problems that may arise due to scheduling or traffic on the day of the event. Each driver will need a vehicle that can transport four (4) marchers to and from their assigned segments. Supplies for sanitizing your vehicle and water for the marchers will be provided. There will be two short meetings held prior to the event on June 26th and July 3rd that the drivers will need to attend. If you are not local to the area, you can virtually participate in the meetings with advanced notice.
If you would like to support this event as a driver, please let Sandy Boggs know via email at sandragb@sccoast.net. Drivers do not need to be a Rotarian or local to the area to participate. If you are unable to be a driver this year, please come out and support this event as a spectator and show your American Pride!

In June, 2021 the City of Charleston kicked off its Public Safety Leadership Initiative with stated goals of creating community-centric and inclusive culture within our police and fire services. Currently 60 participants from all ranks and divisions within our public safety organizations, to include professional staff, are participating in this 6-month leadership journey. This is the first type of collaborative training between all personnel in the history of Charleston public safety.

The City of Charleston’s Police and Fire Departments applaud the support and efforts of the Historic Charleston Rotary Club for their tremendous contribution to making this training possible. Without the substantial financial and professional support from our local Historic Rotary Club this collaborative training, to prepare public safety staff for future leadership positions, would not have been possible. Partnerships such as this illustrate the importance of public, private and community involvement in public safety. The Rotary can be thanked for taking a role in assisting both departments in reaching their goals of professional excellence.

The Rotary Club of Charleston supported the formation of the Leadership Development Institute with a $50,000 grant in 2020, the largest donation to a single cause in the club’s history and one that recognized the 100th Anniversary of its community service in the Charleston area. The club, which counts CPD Chief Luther Reynolds and CFD chief Daniel Curia among its 125 members, has pledged its continued support through involvement by its members in the evolution of the program.

Over the 6 months, participants will have intensive classroom training on 8 critical leadership topics, be assigned to accountability groups, complete a personality assessment, watch reinforcement videos, complete workbooks with team members and conduct a reflective presentation at the conclusion of the program. The following are the 8 courses:

Strength-based leadership 5 Anchors of Leadership

Higher Levels of Accountability Leadership: What is Your Brand

Compassionate Leadership Mission-oriented Mind

Positive Conflict Self-Regulation & Peer Accountability

A simple, yet profound question at a weekend retreat – “Why do you
want to go on living?” My reply served to clarify my life’s goal and
purpose – “To have a positive impact on other peoples’ lives.”

I knew I wanted to be a physician from age 11. I did not understand
then, that my profession would be the ideal way for me to experience a
life of fulfillment. I raised a family (wife MaryEllen and daughter Erin)
and practiced Urologic Surgery in Myrtle Beach for 29 years. In my 15
years of retired life, my pursuits continued the theme. I made 8
medical mission trips to Haiti and performed surgery on some of the
poorest and most grateful people on the planet. I helped raise more
than $2 M for this impoverished country. Through Rotary and Water
Mission, my international experiences allowed me to raise more than
$300,000 in Global Grants for water and sanitation projects in Haiti,
Peru and Africa.

I have also ventured into the S. C. Department of Corrections. Two
years of research have allowed me to create a moving PowerPoint
presentation entitled, “The Passion of Our Lord through the Eyes of a
Surgeon.” More than 7,000 inmates have been impacted by this
invitation to find their life’s Purpose, by re-discovering God in their
lives.

Rotary has given me so many opportunities to change the world for the
better. I am so grateful to MaryEllen for encouraging me to join two
decades ago.
