The summer school is designed for young people who are passionate about the performing arts
including dance, drama, music and singing. This is our 16th annual Summer School and young
people come back to us year after year to learn new skills, make new friends and have a fantastic
experience.

During the week long course you will be involved in all aspects of creating a production culminating in a show of epic proportions. You will work with professional actors, directors, musicians and choreographers from Round Midnight Ltd and all for a parent friendly price of £75.00 per performer per week.

Toppers toy shop is the best in town. Dom Topper is proud of his toys and makes them all by hand, they are brilliant! All the children agree, the world is
a better place thanks to Toppers!

But N.A.F Toys Ltd, an international, multi million pound company, owned by the cold-hearted
Nigel Arlington-Farley is taking over! It seems that Toppers Toy shop has suspiciously had a run of faulty toys, a water pistol that’s flooded a village, a toy car that’s been involved in a hit and run and worst of all a brand new My Little Poopy Doll has exploded and taken out an entire block of flats!

Has Mr Topper been making dodgy toys or is N.A.F trying to sabotage his business? Unless he
can prove his innocence by the end of the week, Toppers is going to get closed down and bulldozed with all the toys inside!

Will the children be able to save their beloved toyshop from the clutches of N.A.F Toys? Will Mr
Topper be able to stop his toys causing havoc? And who are the mysterious helpers that work only when the shop is closed???

You’ll have to act, sing and dance as if the future of Toppers toy shop depends on it...because it does!!

THE ONLY WAY IS DANGLEBERRY
Dangleberry is THE most boring place on earth. For the kids that live there life is dull. No fun, no excitement, nothing to do..... until wannabe celeb local girl Demi, gets some news.
The town is to be the next big thing in reality tv programmes and will appear in ‘The Only way
is Dangleberry!’ The cameras want sleaze, fun, arguments, sleaze, parties, asbo families and sleaze – all Dangleberry can offer is a church hall, knitting
clubs and a visiting library bus!

With the TV cameras on their way it’s up to Demi and her mates to convince local residents to ‘get a life’ and make Dangleberry look interesting. Will Ray from the garage pretend to be a Lady Ga Ga tribute act? Will old Mrs Timkins put down her knitting and take up streedance? Will the posh Parker-Farquar family don tracksuits, get tagged and start brawling in the streets? - and what is the real reason Demi has got the TV cameras to Dangleberry???

You’ll have to act, sing and dance as if the future of Dangleberry depends on it...because it does!!

'Dawn of Hope

Walsall CDT alongside Walsall teaching Primary Care Trust, NHS Walsall Community Health and Walsall Local Neighbourhood Partnership are currently developing a educational DVD to raise awareness of clinical depression for BME communities.

The first phase of the project involved consultation and research with health staff, service users, GP’s and local community which was led by BME Community Mental health development workers and Graduate Mental Health Workers from the tPCT.

The film script was devised by Round Midnight Ltd in response to the findings of the consultation and with input from the project steering group representatives. The script has been proofed by many local health professionals to ensure it is an accurate portrayal of the local situation and local services available.

The film consists of a series of interrelated case studies illustrating different aspects of depression. The dialogue will be in Urdu with English subtitles. The drama will be supported with information about treatments and recovery including interviews with health professionals.

A supporting brochure will give explanatory background information, an overview of depression and signpost further sources of information and support.

The DVD will be showcased On March 11th at Forrest Arts Centre Walsall.

Round Midnight Ltd recently worked with The Saltley Plus Cluster and the Rosary Catholic Primary school in the October half term. You could tell that halloween was just around the corner as the young people involved chose to create a spooky pop video full of ghostly images.

The video was filmed by the group with the help of arts worker Stuart Lane with music by the group and music worker Sami Cornick.

The group has just 3 hours per day to put together this spooky tale of a deserted school.

Up and coming...

Well, it's been a busy couple of months for us at Round Midnight with a total of 12 projects running throughout the summer, including a HUGE creative arts week with over 100 young people taking part! It was hard work for all but loads of fun. Thank you to those involved and we look forward to next summers activities!

So, now that summer is long gone, we're concentrating on new and exciting projects over the next few months:

Claire Downes, director of Raw Talent and Round Midnight is running Acting for Camera workshops for young people at the Foil Film Festival in November. The Foyle Film Festival takes place in Northern Ireland and Claire will be working with casting director, Pippa Hall. Pippa has worked on a number of films including Nanny McPhee, Eragon and Run Fatboy Run.

Also in November and nearer to home, we are opening a brand new Youth Theatre! Clifton Road Youth Centre in Sutton Coldfield has now become an additional venue for Raw Talent Youth Theatre, which means that all you young actors and actresses in Sutton who are bursting to get onto the stage, finally can! We start on Thursday 4th November, 4pm to 5.30pm for 7-11yr olds and 5.30pm to 7pm for 11-16yr olds. The term runs for 12 weeks and will end in a fantastically funny and original performance for all the family to enjoy! If you or anyone you know is interested in joining, the contact details are at the bottom of this post.

But before all of that, we are running an awesome film making workshop in October half term (25th-29th) and we would love for you to get involved! This is a great opportunity for you to experience new things, such as directing, acting for camera and learning how to create and film your own project.

The sleepy village of Merrywood is awoken one early summer morning to the “Yarrgghh” of the rowdy pirates, who have dropped anchor in the village
pond!

The villagers are most distressed because in a weeks time the judges from the “Britain Is Smashing” competition will be arriving in Merrywood. Can Merrywood retain its title of the loveliest village in England? Only if the villagers can
persuade the pirates to swap marauding for flower arranging, looting for cake decoration and splicin’ the mainbrace for cricket on the village green. Will Captain Gingerbeard ruin Merrywood's chances in the competition or can the pirates teach the villagers a thing or two about enjoying themselves?

You'll have to act sing and 'yarrgghh' as if your life depends on it!!

Anna Bandana is a child superstar who has everything that a young girl could dream of. Fans,
bodyguards and a crazy stalker who collects her breath in Evian bottles. Anna Bandana is the most famous face on the planet but she is getting sick of it so Anna goes absent without leave (AWOL).

Taking matters into her own hands Anna disguises herself as a young girl named Molly Nobody.
She gives her celebrity world the slip and goes to stay with her pen pal Maud in a little town called Dullsville. Looking to get away from her extreme lifestyle, Anna soon finds out, that the only thing that are extreme in Dullsville are the rules handed out by evil slimeball Pat Testing and his Safety Squad. Will the people of Dullsville uncover the truth about the new arrival to their town? Will the police be able to track Anna down? And will we find out what the deal is with rubber gloves in Dullsville?

This year's Dubai International Film Festival (Diff) will host an acting workshop, called 'Acting for Camera', for school students for the first time.

The workshop is open for school children aged 11 to 17 years and will be held at the Dubai Community Theatre and Arts Centre (Ductac) on December 11 and 12.

The training programme, offered for free, will be led by international professionals and is open for 80 students living in the UAE.

Shivani Pandya, Diff's Managing Director, said the workshops complement the various initiatives launched by Diff to engage regional talent in various aspects of film production.

"Diff is more than a celebration of cinema; it is a community event that is aimed at grooming a confident new generation of film professionals. The Acting for Camera workshop puts the spotlight on training students for films," she said.

The sessions will be introduced and hosted by Pippa Hall, a children's casting director who has worked on films such as Nanny McPhee and The Chronicles of Narnia. It will be led by Claire Downes and Stuart Lane from Round Midnight.

The workshop is being presented by Dubai Pearl, whose President and CEO, Santhosh Joseph, said: "We are delighted to be part of Acting for Camera."

Looking for young entrepreneurs in the West Midlands

Round Midnight and The Princes Trust visited schools throughout the West Midlands to reach out to the next generation of young entrepreneurs.

Princes Trust staff toured schools with the Round Midnight Ltd, who have performed the play ‘I want to be’ for Year 10 and 11 students.

The play tells the story of a fictitious character, Kyle, who leaves school with few qualifications and even less confidence. He wants to be a personal fitness instructor but instead ends up working in a chicken factory with little prospects.

Kyle gets his life back on track when he returns to college and his learning advisor suggests he gets in touch with The Prince's Trust to find out about the Business Programme. He applies for the programme and is given a low interest loan and three years of business mentoring and support. His learning advisor becomes one of his first clients and his business grows so that he starts taking on staff.

“We come across people like Kyle every day,” says Marlena Atkinson from The Prince's Trust. The Trust helps thousands of young people each year who realise their dream of owning their own business. “We believe that all young people have the potential to succeed given the right kind of support and encouragement.”

The Prince's Trust and the Government Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) is working together to encourage disadvantaged young people into business. “We felt that to give maximum reach, something radically different should be tried,” says Marlena. “Round Midnight delivered an amusing and engaging piece of theatre and they held workshops where young people would come up with business ideas and consider how they might be realised.”

Kathy Williams, The Prince's Trust West Midlands regional director said: “Research suggests that social exclusion has a significant impact on the region’s economy. The Prince's Trust is working hard to narrow the gap. The next generation of enterprising talent can be found and nurtured in some of the most unexpected places.”

New Girl - A film exploring drug and alcohol abuse

A film made with St Edmund Campion School and The S.A.F.E (Erdington Extended Services Cluster) in Birmingham exploring drug and alcohol misuse.

The group created devised, wrote and filmed the piece in three days.

The film ends by asking the audience what they would do in a similar situation and you then have the option to watch a positive outcome or a negative one.

I hope you enjoy it.

A version of New Girl that shows what can happen when a person is left to deal with drug and alcohol issues by themselves.

Round Midnights Claire Downes is back on the set of St Trinians 2 - The Legend of Frittons Gold as acting coach.

Claire, who also coached on the first film, works with directors Oliver Parker and Barnaby Thompson about what they want from the school girls and then works with the young actresses to make sure they are up to speed when filming starts.

Claire is working on location and at Ealing Studios.

Massive production planned for Darlaston Town Hall

Darlaston Town Hall

A community play and public art display for the whole community to enjoy is set to be staged at the recently refurbished Darlaston Town Hall.

The town hall, which officially re-opened last June (2008) after a £325,000 makeover, is going to be the backdrop for the event called ‘The Very Heart Of It’ which is set to be held in the Summer.

The production is a collaboration between Walsall Council’s creative development and project delivery teams and the Darlaston Events Committee.

Funding for the project has been identified from the town, district and local centres capital programme budget and the Darlaston Events Committee was successful in receiving additional funding from Awards for All.

The project replaces original plans to install a fountain in Victoria Park after tenders received were deemed too expensive so it was agreed to explore an alternative public art proposal for Darlaston town centre.

Councillor Adrian Andrew, cabinet member for regeneration at Walsall Council, said: “Darlaston Town Hall is one of the finest buildings in the borough and so it is a very fitting venue for such a community event.

“The ‘Very Heart Of It’ promises to be a spectacular event which will bring together the whole community,” he added.

Councillor Bill Madeley, chairman of the Darlaston Events Committee, said: “This is a very exciting initiative which aims to bring together the community of Darlaston and celebrate the town and the people within it.

“We are looking forward to finalising the plans over the coming months and getting the public involved,” he added.

A brief was prepared by the creative development team, and expressions of interest invited from artists. A locally-based consortium of professional artists called Bostin Arts, comprising community artist Sam Hale, sculptor Karl Lewis, metal worker Lofty Wright and Birmingham-based theatre producers Round Midnight Ltd was felt to be the most able to deliver the objectives of the brief. Sam Hale and Round Midnight Ltd have extensive experience of working on projects in Walsall.

The artist met with officers and councillors at a meeting in December and agreed widespread consultation events and a draft delivery programme.

The artwork will require planning consent and Conservation Area consent, and applications are expected to be submitted in the spring.

The art work and the community play will be inspired by and based upon research carried out by the artists via a series of workshops and drop-in sessions with the Darlaston community. The art work and play are planned to be premiered on the same day, which is currently timetabled to be in the summer.

It's that time of year again. The time when you try and decide where our beleaguered pound will allow you to travel on our summer hols, do you stay in the UK and risk double pneumonia sitting on a dodgy deck chair or take a flight somewhere sunny and spend a fortnight chatting to the type of family you'd cross the street to avoid in the UK. Well fear not because there is another choice.

The summer school is designed for young people who are passionate about the performing arts including dance, drama, music and singing. They will be part of a professional theatrical company working to a rigorous schedule in order to achieve a production of the highest artistic standard.

During the week long courses the young people will be involved in all aspects of creating a production culminating in shows of epic proportions. The young performers will work with professional actors, directors, musicians and choreographers from Round Midnight Ltd and all for a parent friendly price of £75.00 per performer per week.

Round Midnight have been running summer schools since 1995 and many of the young people who have take part in have gone on to careers in film, television and theatre.

From dodgy DVD’s to doggy biscuits, tattoos to tangerines, Mingingham Indoor Market sells it all.

Teenagers go there to hang around and wind up the security guards, mums go there to buy nappies and leave their kids in Colin’s Crèche and pensioners go there to gossip over a cup of tea in Elsie’s Café. Everybody loves Mingingham Indoor Market…or do they?

When the stall holders arrive one morning to find the market vandalised with strange messages daubed on the walls they know something’s rotten, and for once it’s not their fruit and veg.

Determined to get to the bottom of the mystery they join forces and begin an exciting and dangerous adventure that will take them from the aisles of the local hypermarket to the plush offices of property mogul St John Chlomondeley.

You’ll have to act, sing and dance as if the future of Mingingham Indoor Market depends on it – because it does!

The Very Heart of It

"Buildings and businesses may come and go but at the very heart of the place are the communities that make up Darlaston."

Round Midnight are working with artists Bostin' Arts and Lofty Wright on "The Very Heart of It" an exciting community arts project based in Darlsaton in Walsall.

The project will culminate with a new community play to be staged in Darlaston Town Hall that celebrates the past, the present and the future of Darlaston, starring the people of Darlaston.

A fantastic new piece of public art will be created, this will stand outside Darlaston Town Hall for many years to come. Both the art and the drama will be inspired by local peoples stories and memories of the area.

We are currently collecting the stories that will inform the performance and public art and have been told some wonderful stories about Darlaston.

Round Midnight and The Learning and Skills Improvement Service

Round Midnight are currently working with the The Learning and Skills Improvement Service on their Senior leadership Development programme. A piece of theatre entitled "Reunited" has been commissioned by LSIS and Round Midnight also facilitate a series of workshops for the participants of the programme.

Reunited looks at the relationship between four college friends meeting together for the first time in many years. Can they treat each other as "grown ups" or will they revert to the roles they use to play.

The Senior Leadership Development Programme (SLDP) is a unique personal and professional programme designed for senior leaders and principals of the future.

It provides a challenging and stimulating learning experience that increases the capacity of its participants to become successful and effective Principals and Chief Executives.

There is an emphasis on the inter-relations between theory, practice and context of leadership and the programme draws heavily on participants as a resource and agents of change in their organisation.

The workshops are facilitated by experienced arts workers who all have enhanced CRB checks and are fully insured.

Round Midnight workshops raise the aspirations of the participants and give them a positive experience that is energetic and fun. Many of our workshops enhance key themes such as social inclusion, community cohesion and respect for self and others.

All of our workshops can incorporate numerous curriculum needs and core skills.

Our after school provision is fully booked until Easter. We are currently working with groups in Small Heath, Erdington, Chelmsley Wood, Perry Common and Bordesley Green. However we do have arts workers available for projects during February half term.

Round Midnight are very flexible so whether you already have a specific project in mind or want some guidance on the workshops that would work best for your group we are happy to help.

Fab Feb Fun 2009

Fab Feb Fun is a free half term project for young people aged 9 - 12. The project will focus on performing and the young people involved will have the chance to develop great new skills. Fab Feb Fun will incorporate live drama and film-making and culminate in a performance the whole family can enjoy.

The project will be delivered by Round Midnight Ltd , a company with 17 years experience of working with young people.

I Want to Be - Round Midnight and The Princes Trust

"I Want to Be" is a Theatre in Education programme run in conjunction with the Princes Trust. It explores the themes of self employment, education and enterprise.

"I Want to Be" is a theatrical production followed by interactive workshops that explore the themes further. First commissioned by the trust in 2001, the programme has enjoyed enormous success touring schools involved in the Princes Trust XL scheme.

The production is touring schools in Birmingham and the Black Country in December 2008.

Edinburgh Marathon

A short note to say thank you very much to all those who donated money to Myeloma UK in sponsorship for the Edinburgh Marathon. I can safely say I earnt your money last Sunday, I would post photos showing my brave endeavours but I fear the sight of me at the finish line in a pair of lycra running tights, crying on to someone's shoulder may remove any respect you have left for me.

Suffice to say it was the hardest thing I've ever done, harder even than last years effort with a stomach bug because of the warm weather we had. I actually enjoyed the first 20 miles or so, thanks to my training, it was the last 6 miles which you can't train for that was hell on earth. Nevertheless, the reason we ran was for Myeloma UK and all the brilliant stuff they've done to help my family over the past year. They had over a hundred people running for them this year, and the money they've made means everything to such a small charity.

When I first emailed to charity mug you all, I told you that thanks to Myeloma UK my mom has been around to see the birth of her first grand daughter. Well now she's been in good health to see the birth of her third grandson as my brother and his wife added another one to the pile last week!

Ian Jarvis Marathon Update

Hi all First off, thanks for the many messages of support and good luck for last Sunday's London Marathon! I didn't run it and never planned to, but such a gesture was very welcome as I sat in the pub watching football. I am, however, doing the Edinburgh Marathon which is now only 5 weeks away. What this means is that there's still time for you, friends, to visit www.justgiving.com/mrsjarvisno1 and donate me some money.

I was reading in the paper the other day, an article offering advice to people on how to politely decline requests for sponsorship. The reason being that with people blanket bombing their address books asking for money, it's likely you'll get three or four such emails around the same time, so if you were going to donate to everyone things could a bit pricey. This is fair enough and I completely understand, but what I love and appreciate almost as much as people's hard earned cash, what gives me a special warm tingly feeling when I see someone new has donated, is knowing they've taken a few minutes from whatever they were doing, filled out some boxes, searched around for their credit card, gone through the mildly annoying process of typing in their 16 digit code and written us a little message when really they didn't need to. So if you've already given your beer tokens to someone else for charity, donated your money to someone you like just that little bit more than me (which I wholeheartedly understand), then no worries. But, if you could take a few minutes from whatever you're doing, fill in some boxes, search around for your credit card, go through the mildly annoying process of filling in your 16 digit code and write us a little message - then just donate a quid, I'd get a special warm tingly feeling and pain from my bleeding feet after 23 miles would be that much easier to bear.

Obviously don't all of you donate a quid, we'd never get anywhere! We're about £500 off our £2000 target so thank you very, very much to those who have already stumped up. Training is, as you'd expect with 5 weeks to go, quite intense. Last week I stepped it up to an 18 mile run, which wasn't too bad, I did have to stop briefly as I was feeling a touch bilious but I think that was because I drank a Lucozade much too quickly - I shan't be making that mistake again I assure you. I am also proudly still running in lycra jogging tights, despite the warmer weather rendering them unnecessary and a man in a car openly laughing at me at some traffic lights the other day. Give it 6 months and they'll all be wearing them, you watch.

Right, thanks for reading once again and for all your efforts from all the Jarvis family. My Mom's still doing okay and is currently enjoying a well earned holiday in Cyprus - her first for a couple of years. All the bestIan xxx
