The Steve Welgoss Memorial Trout Tournament took place on Saturday, May 26, 2012. A field of 46 entries paid $50 to enter the Round Valley Trout Association sponsored tournament, one of their biggest I’ve ever heard of. The tournament was put together to memorialize Steve Welgoss, the owner of Lebanon Bait & Sport, who passed away Monday, Aug. 8, 2011, peacefully at home at the age of 71.

There was quite a bit of Fog in the morning, making navigation a little hairy. Once everyone got clear of the boat launch area and started fishing the catching reports started rolling in including jaw tagged rainbow trout. Pics and more details at the Lebanon Bait & Sport Facebook Page.

Fishing Spruce Run Reservoir – wait, what?

You’ve got to mix it up a little so instead of fishing at Round Valley today, my buddy Chris and I headed to Spruce Run Reservoir to see if we could get into the Hybrid Striped Bass action everyone’s been raving about. Below is a map showing the route from Round Valley to Spruce Run, about 8miles driving, 3 as the crow flies.

We stopped at Lebanon Bait and Sport for some Large shiners, forgot our bait bucket, and Jody hooked us up with a loaner. Thanks Jody!

We didn’t get in the water at Spruce Run till about 6:45am which was too late! There were fish jumping everywhere in the thinning fog.

You can keep 10 Crappie (Black & White) per day provided they’re 8 inches or bigger. This one, Black I think, measured 14 1/4 inches and inhaled a large shiner suspended 4 feet under a bobber. We were fishing the bobbers while drifting and throwing crankbaits and spinners.

As usual I got sunburn, forgot to wear sunblock, and called it quits at 11:30am. The closest we got to a Hybrid Striped Bass was seeing a few carcasses and filet skins at the boat launch. Once the sun burned the fog off the water, the fish stopped jumping and the bite died completely. It was a fun trip and I recommend going if anyone feels burnt out by Round Valley.

Hackettstown NJ State Fish Hatchery in Warren County open house the weekend of June 2-3

The NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife will mark the 100th anniversary of the Hackettstown State Fish Hatchery in Warren County with an open house the weekend of June 2-3. Visitors will get a behind-the-scenes look at the storied facility that for the past century has raised a wide variety of species to benefit anglers across the state.

The open house will feature a unique tour of the intricate fish hatching operations, while young anglers will have an opportunity for hands-on fishing experiences at two newly renovated education ponds or at the “Kiddie Fishing Tank.” A giant mobile aquarium will display some of the state’s finest fish specimens and there will be bird walks, hatchery tours and archery, an outdoor flea market, historic displays in the original hatchery building, and on Sunday entertainment by a bluegrass band.

Food can be purchased from vendors, but visitors are welcome to bring their own food. No dogs will be allowed at this event, since this is an operating fish hatchery with many open ponds and raceways.

Admission is free. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for both event days. Pre-registration will be required for some activities on the day of the event. May RVTA Monthly Trout Fishing Tournament Results

The Round Valley Trout Association’s monthly tournament was on held on a beautiful May day this past Saturday. It was such a nice day in fact that I wound up taking my kids to our local water park. If you ever get a chance check out Doorbrook Park in Colt’s Neck. The park is FREE and it has the most amazing playground / sandbox / water park you can imagine.

Lost and Found – Spinner Bait

Hiking the shoreline a while back, I picked up the above lure. It appears to be a spinner bait like a Panther Martin, but there are NO markings on it what-so-ever. It’s possible someone made this from a spinner bait kit.

The fish head is made of some type of composite material and the eyes are glued on. Anyone know what this is?
