Interviewed: January, 2026

Enjoy the original version of the interview with André Andersen by Fabio Magliano of Metal Hammer – in english.

Q: ‘The Mission’ has followed Royal Hunt through several eras. What does performing it live today say about who you are as a band in 2025?

It´s one of these songs that´s still fun to play and fans seems to enjoy quite a bit – especially at festivals… guess its the easily recognizable riff and the chorus which is rather immediate. It also worth mentioning that this line-up really delivers the goods here, giving this track a very personified touch.

Q: Watching the Posada Rock Festival performance, the connection with the crowd feels almost tangible. How has your relationship with live audiences evolved over the decades?

The longer the band exists the easier it becomes to connect with the audience : in the beginning you always have something to prove but your back catalog is quite limited and your reputation isn´t established enough… nowadays – after over 3 decades of existence, a strong line-up and a vast repertoire to choose tracks from – you´re connecting with people way, way faster.

Q: Royal Hunt has always balanced technical precision with emotional storytelling. Has your idea of what truly matters in a performance changed with time?

Not at all. All of us are pretty sufficient as musicians but no technical skills can save a song if there´s no story, no mood and no real passion involved – it just becomes a technical exercise, that´s all.

Q: You’ve navigated shifts in line-ups, trends, and the music industry itself. Looking back, what was the most defining crossroads in the band’s history?

Internet/filesharing was an enormous earthquake which changed the music world completely and – as it seems – forever.

Q: Progressive and power metal have both changed dramatically since the early ’90s. How do you see Royal Hunt’s role within today’s metal landscape?

I´m not sure if musically it changed all that much: today it´s just much more of everything. Our role is still the same: deliver a quality material while still maintaining the original style which is very much the essence of Royal Hunt. As for the mechanics of it: sure, MTV got exchanged with YouTube,, radio – with Spotify and playlists, proper studios with laptops and such… yet a good song is still a good song, proper playing is still valid, so – the old rule still applies.

Q: ‘Behind the Curtain’ suggests revealing something hidden. What is something about Royal Hunt that fans still misunderstand or overlook?

The idea behind this EP is to kind of invite our fans “backstage”: here´s a new song we´ve been working on, check out a couple of live tracks which we performed last year, here´s us playing around with some acoustic stuff and even a new mix of an old track – why not? After the monumental release of “Dystopia Pt. 1 and Pt. 2” we felt it was time to kick back a little and invite our fans into our camp for an “informal chat”, if you will…actually, everybody´s still welcome to find even more great stuff at: royalhunt.com

Q: Longevity in metal often comes at a personal cost. What have you each had to sacrifice to keep this band alive for so long?

Everything comes with a certain price tag attached: in our case it´s being away from friends and family, missing out on some significant events occasionally. Lack of social/economical security/stability in our line of work is another issue, but it’s a given.

Q: Royal Hunt’s music often feels cinematic and grand. Outside of music, what forms of art or life experience have influenced your sense of drama and storytelling?

Musically it´s definitely the “large format” bands like Genesis, Pink Floyd, Kansas, Queen, Rush and such. Outside music its always been books – mostly historical material – but also dramatic works of Bradbury, Remark, McCarthy, Strugatskys and the likes. Movies obviously having an impact (the ones with epic soundtracks in particular) as well as multiple current events which can push your buttons for some reason… inspiration can be found literally everywhere.

Q: Performing festivals versus headline shows brings very different energies. What kind of environment brings out the best in Royal Hunt today?

Hard to tell as it varies… There´s an obvious difference from a technical point of view – we can´t use most of our stage production at the festival – but otherwise its basically the same, especially if we´re playing the full set (90 or so minutes) at the festival.

Q: The Posada Rock Festival crowd represents a new generation alongside long-time fans. How do you bridge that generational gap without rewriting your identity?

I think releasing new material on a regular basis yet raising the bar with each and every release while staying true to yourself (or at least trying hard to achieve that) is the key. I strongly believe that if you´re staying creative and the band´s performing to its best ability your old fans won´t leave and new fans will come.

Q: Technology has radically changed how music is recorded, consumed, and shared. Has it brought you closer to listeners—or created more distance?

Both. Digital communication has definitely brought us closer to our devoted fans all over the world, as shown by the successful crowdfunding campaigns for each new release over the past 10 years. We are humbled and overwhelmed by the support we receive every time we announce that a new release is in the works. Check out the recent Royal Hunt Camp for “Behind the Curtain”.

On the other hand, the way of reaching new audiences has become very different. Yes, we can post on social media and upload videos and new music, but the level of connection is not the same as it was with airplay, live shows, and physical press. Listeners today are typically bombarded with posts and countless new releases, the attention span becomes shorter and shorter… and that is why we appreciate those who can still grind through Royal Hunt’s thick layered progressive pie when discovering the band on digital platforms.

Q: ‘The Mission’ speaks of purpose and direction. Has the meaning of that “mission” changed for you personally over the years?

Not much. I´m a strong believer in “do what you really want to do, give it your best and hope for the best”.

Q: Royal Hunt has always avoided chasing trends. Was that a conscious decision from the beginning, or something that became clear only in hindsight?

We had this collective idea (or concept, if you will) from the very first day: take the inspiration from all our favorite bands in classic rock, add some elements of prog and classical music and put it all together in a sophisticated yet accessible form with a unique sound/performance/production value which will make this band instantly recognizable.

Q: When you look back at your earliest releases, what surprises you most about who you were then as musicians—and as people?

Honestly, I´m surprised we made it so far. You see: we’ve always been very hard to put in a box: rock? metal? prog? aor? neoclassical? And it all because we always had all of these elements in our music, so arriving at the scene with this specific style was quite difficult… yet the band soldiered on and it still amazes me.

Q: After decades on the road, what still excites you about stepping on stage, and what still scares you?

Hanging around and going on stage with this amazing bunch of people – my bandmates – excites me constantly… such a gang of incredibly talanted guys! Performing around the world and meeting our fans is still an amazing experience. Travelling can wear you down a bit, that´s true, but otherwise – its all great. Can’t think about anything to be scared of, really, but I do get nervous right before the show starts… yet it disappears quickly, mostly in a couple of minutes into the set.

Q: Many bands fade into nostalgia. What keeps Royal Hunt creatively alive rather than becoming a legacy act?

Having a desire to stay creative: working on new material, re-arranging every set list, looking for new ways to present your work, improving your performance… I don’t think its difficult if you´re an artist at heart and in this band – everybody´s like that and wants to move forward.

Q: How do you deal with moments when inspiration runs dry, and does experience make those moments easier—or harder?

Inspiration is everywhere: a book, a newspaper, a movie or simply a casual conversation you just happened to hear a bit of while walking down the street. Being surrounded by such talented people as the guys I´m playing with helps a lot with getting inspired too.

Q: The metal scene today is more global than ever. How has interacting with different cultures shaped your worldview beyond music?

It does expand your cultural horizon tremendously, it inspires you and gives you an understanding of an endless complexity of the world we´re living in today.

Q: If someone discovers Royal Hunt for the first time through this live video of ‘The Mission’, what do you hope they understand about the band’s past—and its future?

I hope they´ll appreciate the effort we put into this track in order to make it interesting yet accessible, the level of musicianship displayed by everyone on that stage and will sense the sheer excitement projected by the band and the audience alike. I also hope that it will make them curious enough to dig a bit deeper and discover our vast catalog and – who knows? – maybe come and see us perform next time.

Reviewed: December, 2025
Released: 2025, Northpoint

Now this is how you do an EP! Royal Hunt is coming out of some well-deserved downtime and a successful pair of concept albums DYSTOPIA (2020) and DYSTOPIA-Part 2 in 2022 and a long tour cycle and some reissues of older material.

BEHIND THE CURTAIN comes in a nice looking, mid-sized digipak with full booklet, liner notes, stickers, a button and photos. The liner notes go sing by sing giving fans insight into the value of these unreleased tracks.

We lead off with a leftover from the DYSTOPIA sessions which is just as good as anything on the albums. Up next a pair of live tracks from 2023 with immaculate sound. Following that are two acoustic tracks drawn from an impromptu session at a bar. The song ‘Half Past Loneliness’, originally found buried in SHOW ME HOW TO LIVE (2011), is really having a renaissance. It really lends itself to this upbeat acoustic version and apparently there’s a dance mix version of this tune as well!

Lastly and most intriguingly is a remixed, remastered version of ‘Fistful Of Misery’ from CAST IN STONE. Anderson was never quite satisfied with his own mix in the album so he experimented and redid this song. My ear isn’t that keen but it still sounds good to me!

If that wasn’t enough treasure, the EP comes with a DVD! Subtitled ‘Camp 2025 ‘It is a bit of tour diary with the band travelling to a gig, (Posada Rock in Romania in 2023) airports, backstage etc. It runs 45 minutes and has the live clips from the four EP clips I mentioned earlier. The sound and visual qualify is quite fine. It is a nice glimpse into what the band has been up to lately, some fooling around, jokes and so on.

BEHIND THE CURTAIN was an unexpected surprise and a treat to let the fans know they are still alive and kicking with this packed and valuable EP. I might be rating this a bit high for ‘just’ an EP, but I think it worth it!

As a final side note, fans may recall that in 1996, 2006 and 2016 the band released double live albums, called respectively, 1996, 2006, and 2016! If the Metal godz are with us, could these new live tracks appear on a new double live album next year… called 2026? One can hope!

I have read dystopian literature before, most notably “We” by Yevgeny Zamyatin, many years ago – and it’s still wrenching my soul in all its hopelessness and intellectual darkness. Still, I recommend it as highly as I can.

Years later, thanks to Christopher Hitchens and his “Why Orwell Matters”, I read “Animal Farm” and of course “1984”. These also sit firm inside my being like a shaking real-life experience. I thought I might be well prepared for “Fahrenheit 451”, but it surprised me with its originality. The horrible mood is recognizable, but the story is different.

I won’t elaborate further, but to state that it is now together with “1984” and “We” as part of an important triangle of warnings against what a society will evolve into if any of the totalitarian extremes come into power – and yes, I am looking at far left and far right wingers equally. It’s not really a line with these two as far away from each other as possible, but a circle where those ends blend together, both as far away from the middle ground as possible.

Understanding Dystopia: My Track-by-Track Take

I realized I needed to understand “Dystopia” better, and I decided to sit down with both albums and my fresh memory of the book.

Here is my take on it all, track by track. I limit myself to avoid serving up spoilers, as I really want anyone reading this far to read the book. How much you ever might enjoy the Dystopia albums now, you’ll appreciate them more.

Inception °F451

“Paper will self-ignite between 424 and 475 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on conditions.”

Ray Bradbury chose a good number in the middle somewhere, with just the right kind of specificity to add mystery. Read the quote at the start of the booklet and heed his words. This intro describes key scenes in the book, and the grandeur of the firemen, in their own admission, as well as the majestic nature of an undertaking like these albums.

Burn

Takes me back to the beginning of the book, though it certainly fits the general state of things – what happens all the time. Lyrically, I was struck by the lines

“…got eaten by flames, but nobody will know their names”

and the brilliantly brutal

“Legends and tales that we are all set to unlearn”.

The song is as harsh as its topic, both in vocals and music. Fire, with a false sense of cleansing, is used to suppress knowledge and maintain social conformity. A perfect start.

The Art of Dying

The guitars and keyboards in the verses are gorgeous, and the chorus is fantastic. And somehow, through this beauty, the dystopian mood is painted with masterful strokes. Keeping with the metaphor, the music towards the end is painting the chaos of desperation in the inferno. Many things are dying here, and not only literally. Montag has been dying for a long time, thought by thought. But then…

I Used to Walk Alone

My favourite duet for decades. Love to hear Mark Boals sing Royal Hunt songs, and Alexandra sets up the stage for his dramatic side. (André always got something more out of him.) Her effort here is pure brilliance. Together, they are perfectly describing the emerging soulful, intellectual though non-romantic relationship between Montag and Clarisse. His life before meeting her is over. The emotional isolation is ripped apart. And the rain, is there hope in how it’s fighting fire? Or is it easier to hide in the rain? I don’t think my mind will ever stop wandering through the dimly lit corridors of this story.

The Eye of Oblivion

The surveillance state erasing identity and history. While manipulating people and keeping them in a constant state of distraction, so no actual thinking will be done. Vocally, D.C.Cooper manages to portray a desperation in the line

“The day will come – you’ll see, my son”.

I don’t know why, but the way he sings “my son” is like cold fingers tearing at my soul. This is musical magic. The chorus is great. This line got me:

“Nobody’s safe enough to stray away a little from the pack”.

Terrible.

Hound of the Damned

The mechanical music and sounds portray the relentlessness of the metallic ‘servants’ of the state police. Another great song. Lyrically, I have to mention this:

“Now you’re ceasing to be – a teardrop in the sand.”

Absolute genius picture. Can it get grimmer and more futile? But then also:

“Empire’s weaker than it claims”.

Some are still brave enough to fight, if nothing else, for their life.

The Missing Page (Intermission I)

Heart-wrenchingly beautiful. Clarisse is gone. I think I will leave it at that.

Black Butterflies

The remnants of forbidden knowledge fluttering skyward. A tragic inversion of beauty. Delicate shapes that once held meaning, reduced to soot. A poetic irony, where butterflies, forever the symbol of rebirth, transformation and hope, are now ghosts of lost ideas. Superb, distinct verses that I am so happy that DC sings, move into a bridge that elegantly takes us to perhaps the strongest chorus since “A Life to Die For”. The lyrics are especially elegant; rolling off the tongue, in a way. This is a stunning track.

Snake Eyes

Is it two ones on a pair of dice? Bad gamble. Or is Montag deceived by a snake? I can’t get over what a brilliant album this is. Another superb SONG. That the lyrics and the music have a deeper meaning than most people would even consider is the icing on an already wonderful cake. The verse melody and the chorus are both absolutely remarkable. Love the intensity added by Boals.

Midway (Intermission II)

Beautiful. A little hint at one of Royal Hunt’s most special moments. For me, the first I ever heard from them. I believe this is a moment where Montag is between two worlds. A pause after all the chaos and before the unknown battle ahead.

Midway (Resumption)

I wondered if this was vinyl or crackle from a bonfire. Book people? The music somewhat silently picks up where the last album left off.

Thorn in My Heart

Great opener. Energetic, melodic, deep. I have to quote the first few lines of the lyrics:

“A day like this you can’t erase, you can’t dismiss a Judas kiss
Got caught off-guard, betrayed and permanently scarred, it hit so hard
May the bridge you burned behind you kindly light your way
May your sin remain and let you live another day
while you’re fading away”

Whhooaahh.. you know? I think Montag gets energy from the pain. Clarisse, Mildred… He wants what’s real. However much it might hurt. Listening to the solo trade-offs, I realize something, but I’ll get back to that.

The Key of Insanity

The chaotic recital of the Ray Bradbury quote at the start of the booklet. The syrupy slow groove that appears intermittently pictures the agonizingly slow struggle against the inertia of ignorance and madness. I think you will have to be insane to go up against the state. But in a different way than the idiocy they have tried to impregnate into every citizen. I believe he implies that he will use their own weapons against them; the same instruments for limiting people’s knowledge, he will use to spread knowledge, so everyone will know.

“A scary sound in the key of your insanity.”

This will resonate, right? A very good song with great vocals all around. I think it’s a fine quality in a song that it is distinct, and this one is, both in arrangement and melody.

Live Another Day

Love the arpeggiated keyboard with the drums. And then some essential RH arrangements. Wonderful verses and bridges, and a chorus worthy of the “ABBA albums of RH” – “A Life to Die For” and “Show Me How to Live”. Praise does not come higher with regards to song writing than elevation to ABBA comparison. Something magical was going on in mr.Andersen’s mind around that time. And here. For a song about escape, its message is a sense of strong support from the universe. One of DC’s finest moments. And the song won’t let go. It’s playing on my mind every day.

The Purge

A violent cleansing of both Montag’s inner world, and… There is an irony in how the Black Butterflies theme reprises. The music had me thinking of “Martial Arts”, without it being similar. I love this passage. It really does the job depicting something important in the book, which I won’t mention to avoid ruining the experience of reading it for the first time.

One More Shot

Among the most haunting lyrics of the concept. And set to another of those uniquely Andre Andersen choruses that in a sane world would secure the band a smash hit around the globe. It’s not happy. Music shouldn’t be. Art shouldn’t be. But it’s hopeful, which adds to the yearning. Mark Boals must be mentioned, again. I feel this is a celebration of the resilience of ideas; of the human spirit’s refusal to be extinguished.

Scream of Anger

(a; Hit and Run)
Love the instrumentation in the beginning. Then, later, ferocious keyboard solos the like we first heard from Andre Andersen on “Paper Blood” – another Bradbury inspired moment. Hm.

(b; The Thrill of the Chase)
Perhaps my favourite song off the album. DC’s finest moments.

“…undone”

is so empty yet heartfelt. Very strange and strong effect. Storywise, I think everything has come to a head. Voices must be raised. The furious energy of pent-up anger against the state and everything that has been stolen, ruined and smothered, not to mention, burned. I think revenge is only a small part of it. But the numbness is gone. Intellect and emotion unite in defiance. This whole track is so rewarding to listen to that it could have gone one for another fourteen minutes and I wouldn’t complain. Raw emotional energy goes a long way.

Left in the Wind

Majestic. I feel the weariness mixed with relief. The hope tempered by doubt. It’s a fragile moment, for all the firepower that led there. I really can’t say more about the lyrical meaning as I interpret it without spoiling. But black butterflies, torn pages, voices, and lives alike may all be in the wind; carried or scattered; held aloft or lost.

Resurrection F451

Fire is now not only destruction but is a symbol of transformation. The way has been cleared. Something will rise from the ashes. The music ends on a mysterious note.

All in All

What an amazing pair of albums; a concept; a body of work! The amount of brilliant music at such depth of detail; the amount of care that has gone into every frequency emanating from the speakers?! I can only thank you, André, and all your Hunters, for what you bring to my life.

I am now very ready to receive the EP in the mail. It just got harder to wait.

End Notes

My interpretations are my own. I could be wrong on some or all points. I have tried to keep this short, if you can believe that. There are singers I have not mentioned, and that is not because I don’t think they contribute to the whole, but because I am not entirely sure which one of them I am listening to at any given moment. DC and Mark I will always recognize.

Though I think too much is made of comparisons in music, I guess I should touch on the subject of Part I vs. Part II, if only because it’s out there, being discussed. It seems there’s a sentiment of “Part II didn’t quite live up to Part I”. To me, “Dystopia, Part II” does have only one “problem”, and that is called “Dystopia, Part I”. This “problem”, however, is solved by “Live Another Day”, “One More Shot” and “Scream of Anger” – among others.

In the end, the converse is as true: “Dystopia, Part I” has one problem, called “Dystopia, Part II”. And the absurdity of comparisons like this should be apparent. Is the music world a better place for the existence of both? Yes! Well, then… There is no problem.
