I wanted to extend a big Thank You,to all of you who stopped by my booth this past week end. I know there is so many booths to visit, so I was pleased that you took the time to look at my art and stay a few minutes getting to know each other. Thank you to all who purchased my fine art prints. If you are so inclined, I would love it if you took a quick snap shot of where you hang your new purchase, and send it to me. I always like to see my “children” in their new setting.

I will be updating my site with more photographs very soon.

According to the National Park Service, The Big South Fork may contain more natural arches than any other region in the Eastern United States. Yahoo Arch was formed as a result of erosion at the back of a rock shelter. I love the “other worldliness” of this scene. There is a motion to the rock carvings that has happened over very long periods of time. A fluidity to a solid substance. The term “rock solid” can be dismissed as you sense the ageless process that has taken place.

Yahoo Falls, located in the Big South Fork near Whitley City, is Kentucky’s largest waterfall with a height of 113 feet. The hike to this beautiful waterfall is fairly simple. I started out a little before sunrise and after considering several different vantage points, I chose this view. The early morning sun was behind me, only partially illuminating the scene. I was struck by the massiveness of not only the falls, but also of the sandstone boulders that littered the floor. The palette of reds on the walls and the deep gray and blue’s with bright green moss on the floor. The sound was almost deafening when behind the falls.
A Nikon D700 was used, with a 17-35 2.8 lens @ 35mm set to f9.5 @ 1/15th of a second ISO 200. The digital file was processed using Lightroom 4 and Photoshop CS5. The paper used for the print is Epson Signature Worthy Exhibition Fibre fine art paper.

Well, if I’m not out in the field trying to get a dramatic landscape, which I’m not, then it’s a great day to do some house keeping. I’m currently tearing up and throwing out prints that didn’t make the cut. Harder to do than it sounds. Fine Art archival paper and ink are not cheap, but neither is my reputation! I sell only the best prints I can make. All the “almosts” are trashed. I’m even trashing some shots that I thought would be great, yet with further inspection, they are not. Sometimes you just have to be ruthless.

Great book by Laura Noble on collecting fine art photographs. I found this informative. ” Beyond subject and conceptual considerations, the most important distinction that separates photography as a genre from other forms of artistic media is the relative speed and ease that alterations to the image can be achieved… The ease of image capture and reproduction cultivated experimentation, and photography rapidly began, and continues, to produce it’s own separate and distinct fine-art language. Of course with the vast array of digital manipulation now available, anything is possible. The collector must be mindful of the fact that it is easy to be seduced by so much choice, and the photographer must be sufficiently disciplined in order to produce an image that delivers a strong sense of authorship.”

The weather forecast is always right. Right? Such was the case a week or so ago when I wanted to try and get a good snow scene in before spring came to Kentucky. When I left the house to go to the Big South Fork there was a light rain. I hiked a couple miles down to the Devils Jump area and by that time there was a good rain coming down. I was hoping it would turn to snow and was pleasantly surprised. This scene was transformed before my eyes. What was just a gray dreary scene turned into magic. The clouds came in low to the ground, the river rushing by and the snow came in very fast yet silent. I could almost hear the angelic choir…
A Nikon D700 was used, with a 24-70 2.8 lens @ 34mm set to f8 @ 1/250th of a second ISO 800. The digital file was processed using Lightroom 3.
