The pharmaceutical industry has shown marked resourcefulness in responding to past strategic challenges. However, the issues currently facing the sector require a different set of responses and a significant shift in industry culture. Having leaders with the experience and competencies to respond to these challenges is critical to long-term success. This paper is based on a presentation given by Jacques Bouwens at the recent FT Global Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Conference.

“Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.”—Robert F. Kennedy

As firms become more complex and interdependent their risk profiles continue to change—a dialectic that has been exacerbated by the current global recession. The altered environment requires more effective leadership, and a culture and process that focuses on the true risk/reward model that is enterprise-wide risk management. In this issue, Mark Adams and a team of consultants from our CEO and Board Services practice and from a cross-section of Russell Reynolds Associates’ industry sectors examine how risk has changed the profiles of key leadership roles.

As enterprises expand globally, they are competing with a wider range of market players and are doing so under a myriad of different rules and customs. This combination of forces is rewriting the expectations and required competencies of key corporate officers.
The role of the shared services leader has changed dramatically over the last decade. Once exclusively responsible for tactical activities like cost reduction and process improvement, today’s shared services leader must continue to manage those tasks and be a strategic visionary, helping his or her organization seize opportunities and manage risk across functions in a world with evaporating geographic boundaries and continual technological change.

Hiring senior executives in China is challenging, and, for many, the solutions are not readily apparent. In this article, Adela Yang, Elisa Hukins and members of our team in China look at six specific talent dilemmas facing multinational companies in China and consider the solutions that will ensure sustained business success.

The global outsourcing industry is beginning a new chapter in its relatively short history—one defined by increased opportunity, competition and client expectations. Market success in this winner-take-all environment will go to the firms with strong global leadership teams, agile cultures and a clear plan for transformation. In this issue, Pravesh Mehra, Puneet Kalra and the Business and Professional Services team at Russell Reynolds Associates outline the capabilities and organizational culture firms will need to succeed and provide a road map for the leaders who must guide the process.

Supply Chain Leaders of the Future

One effect of the global financial crisis has been to demonstrate with great clarity how interconnected the world today really is. In supply chain terms, this means supply chain partners can exist virtually anywhere. Throw a handful of giant, fast-emerging economies into the mix, and you have a complex new world placing challenging new demands on the leaders of organizations. In this article, we look at the attributes of future supply chain leaders in this more interconnected and complex reality. A version of the article was first published in Supply Chain Asia magazine.

Elevator Executive: The Transformational CIO

                    99

sorter:

The only thing consistent about the chief information officer position seems to be that it’s a role in a constant state of flux and change. The title itself often engenders as much confusion as it does clarity amongst business users and many functional practitioners. What is a CIO? What is a CTO? Is there a difference between the roles and corresponding titles? As a business leader, what should I expect from this key functional partner? As an IT professional, I have aspirations to be a C-level technology leader. What skills and competencies must I develop and acquire to realize this ambition? In this paper, Shawn Banerji and the Information Officers practice at Russell Reynolds Associates tackle these questions and other issues surrounding next generation CIOs.

The Search is On: Seven Questions to Ask When Recruiting E-commerce Leaders

Think of it as E-Commerce 3.0

                    99

sorter:

                    0

Think of it as E-Commerce 3.0. If the first stage of e-commerce was most memorably signaled when Amazon.com opened for business just 16 years ago and the second stage was the subsequent proliferation of all manner of web stores, today another fundamental shift is under way that is transforming the business landscape. In this paper, Margot McShane and the e-commerce team at Russell Reynolds Associates examine the converging trends that are creating a strong demand for experienced e-commerce retailers, and outline seven critical questions that CEOs, boards and human capital leaders need to address as they begin their search for an e-commerce head. Many of the areas for discussion here are also relevant for organizations in other sectors that need to re-examine or develop their digital content and distribution channels. Future discussions will examine specific issues around e-commerce leadership in financial services, technology, healthcare, government and nonprofit.
