Show Review: JJ Grey and Mofro - Windjammer, Isle of Palms, SC 6/26/09

JJ Grey has often described his music with Mofro as front porch soul. With no juke joints in Charleston, the Windjammer seemed as good a venue as any for the boozy, sweaty, soulful music of Grey and his band. For about two hours, Mofro churned through a representative selection of their catalogue, hitting on highlights from each of their four albums, in addition to a couple choice covers.

Cheap Trick were one of the first bands, if not the first, to play what we now know as Power Pop. Three decades later, you can hear Cheap Trick's sound in countless bands and that could be perceived as gratifying or annoying by someone like Rick Nielsen who did it first, but he sees it as a reflection of the how Cheap Trick operates more than an homage to their sound.

CD Review: Ryan Bingham - Roadhouse Sun

CD Review: Son Volt - American Central Dust

On Son Volt's new album, American Central Dust, Jay Farrar only plays an acoustic guitar, not its electric counterpart. The bandleader's choice of instruments is as much a direct reflection of the overall approach he applies to the album as the choice of label for which Son Volt debuts. Rounder Records has become one of America's primary independent music distributors, largely by focusing on the folk, blues and country music that form the foundation of Farrar’s new songs.

In an era where technologically savvy producers can make even the likes of Katy Perry sound decent on CD, it’s always refreshing when an artist’s performance outshines their album. Such was the case with Jenny Lewis.

At first listen, Regina Spektor’s music sounds fantastical, with her buoyant voice, backed by piano runs, escaping far, far away from reality. However, the listening experience is a lot like opening a little girl’s music box. The spinning, red-haired ballerina at center stage pirouettes in time with the twinkling melody, and at first the dance feels inviting and at last, eerily affecting. The music box’s whimsy masks its ability to actually influence an audience, but then its power takes hold. It’s not just fun anymore…it’s something more.
