Moving to GitHub

The RSS Bandit code and tickets have moved over to GitHub (https://github.com/RssBandit/RssBandit). Please join us there at our new home.

The RSS Bandit project is largely dormant, but there are a few minor updates that I'm aiming to do in the near-future:

Fix the Hi DPI issues when running on high resolution screens. This currently results in either fonts being too small, being blurry, or both.
Update to the latest .NET Framework runtimes
Distribute via the Windows Store as a Centennial application

Long time I did not had the time or internal readiness to continue coding any RSS Bandit feature or bugfix. There were also events in the past regarding my health which prevented a deeper involvement with the project other than manage the site itself and keep connected with the code base itself.

But there are some big events in the past like dead of the Google Reader and comments about Bandit were not running on Windows 8 that let me think again about my project engagement: should we also make a cross and let die slowly RSS Bandit? My decision was to go a similar way as Nick with Feed Demon for now: prepare an intermediate (without the huge User Interface changes) release named Iceman (following Dare's naming conventions) and recent code base 1.9.x, where I plan to address these issues and some new features:

remove Google Reader as a feed source
make it run on Windows 8
make it run on x86 and x64 machines (AnyCPU)
address most important bugs and some of the features requests (vote please!)
backport some of the code from branch trunk/2.0

Some of them are yet done, some of them requires your votes (see the links above to SF). I like to have it finished at the end of this month.

And: RSS Bandit will not be dead as long anyone of the community keep this Open Source project alive...!

Other changes:

now use .NET 4.0 for the project(s)
enable AnyCPU: so now it runs on X86 and X64 machines natively
changed default RSS item display template to use HTML5
made UI more clean by removing useless borders, visible background areas etc. to get more display area for feeds/items
better error messages if feed sources could not be loaded
Folder selection dialogs now pre-select the configured folder(s)
removed unused code/controls/forms; fixed enclosure download (x64 issues) in BITS and NTFS streams
subscriptions sometimes are empty after "Download Feeds..."
Exception if WinRss feed source properties are displayed immediately after adding
now use Interop.Microsoft.Feeds.dll (msfeeds.dll 2.0)
Feed item details view does not always follow search order of the feed list view
Sometimes a node gets "read" state just the moment you select the feed node
Added "Mark All as Read" context menu item to smart folders like "Unread Items"
Disabled google reader synchronization: it is dead (july 2013) now (feedly integration is under review)
Disabled facebook feeds synchronization: they changed their API and we have to review how to re-integrate FB (if possible). For now users can use the fbrss.com online service to "prepare" FB feeds they like to subscribe

CMS updated to version 1.3

Because of the ongoing SPAM flooding, maintenance time and other related issues we gave up hosting our own forum software and moved to use the sourceforge forum located at http://sourceforge.net/projects/rssbandit/forums/forum/335140 (was yet active the recent years, but rarely used).

The links at our site are switched to point to the new location, the old software is not active anymore - sorry. Thanks to all users supporting other users by answering questions! We are in hope this will be continued...

RSS Bandit v1.9.0.1002 Release

Torsten and I have been busy working on the rewriting the RSS Bandit UI using Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) and moving to a ribbon based model. We've had to quickly take a break to fix a problem caused by recent changes in how Google Reader handles authenticated requests from client applications which stopped the synchronization between Google Reader and RSS Bandit.

That problem is fixed with the new release and we've added a little present for Windows 7 users as well.

BUG FIXES

- Google Reader synchronization stopped working with incorrect error message that username/password were wrong

- fixed issue where error messages aren't displayed when FTP upload/download fails

A number of customers have pointed out that Google Reader integration with RSS Bandit has stopped working due to recent changes in how Google Reader authentication works. I'm currently working on a fix and expect a notification about a new release within the next 2 - 3 days. I apologize to our users for this interruption of service.

PS: We are aware of the problems people are having logging in to the RSS Bandit forum and we're working with our web hosting service to address the problems as quickly as possible.
