What are the Principles of Ayurveda?

The beauty of Ayurveda lies in its simplicity! Despite being the oldest healing and wellness science known to mankind, the principles of Ayurveda have been derived from the universal laws of nature, which are extremely simple to comprehend, understand, adopt and follow, and are applicable even today.

There are a few simple things that Ayurveda follows and advocates. If we, as human beings, stick to these basics and follow them religiously, then we can easily lead a healthy and happy life. Take a look at these principles and see if you could follow them for your own benefit:

1. Oneness of Everything: Ayurveda believes that all living and non-living beings are a part of the nature and are made up of the same material and energy… of course, in different proportions. So, when we follow the natural rhythms, our health and well-being is ?automatically ?preserved and the longevity of our life gets enhanced. Every time we go against the principles of nature, we create an imbalance that will result in diseases or ailments.

2. The art of Balancing: Balance is the name of the game. Anything and everything should be done in moderation. Too much or too little of anything could be too bad. If we sleep too much then we will become lazy, and if we sleep too little, then we will become crazy. So, the key lies in moderation.

3. Life doesn’t Stop: Ayurveda believes that Life never ends… it just changes forms. When we cease to exist, life will move on to another form – maybe a plant, an animal or any other living being and continue to exist.

4. The Material is the Same: All living and non-living beings are made up of five materials or Panchabhootas, as Ayurveda calls them. These five elements are: Earth, Water, Air, Fire and Space. We will discuss the Panchabhootas in detail in our next post.

5. The Energy is the Same: The entire cosmos or universe, as per Ayurveda, is made up of three different kinds of energies: 1) The energy of Movement or Vata, 2) The energy of Transformation or Pitta, and 3) The energy of Binding or Kapha. Again, we will talk about these principal energies in detail as we go along.

6. The Healer is Within: Ayurveda believes that our body is the healer. The immune system is within us and that is what protects us from various diseases or ailments. An Ayurvedic Physician can just recommend us to do the right things, take the rights foods, do the right exercise etc. But it is the body that will heal itself and get back into a state of balance. So, the basis of Ayurvedic clinical approach is to support the healer within.

7. Holistic Health: Health and well-being is not determined only through a healthy body. A healthy mind and a healthy soul play an equally important role. So, doing the right things, having the right thoughts, working towards the right personality traits, displaying the right qualities and indulging in right activities go a long way in determining the quality of our life.

Understanding the Various Disciplines of Ayurveda!

Ayurveda is considered to be a holistic healing and wellness science, simply because, it is not only concerned about an individual’s physical health and well-being, but also about mental, emotional and spiritual well-being! Despite being the oldest healthcare system known to mankind, Ayurveda was an extremely organized and systematic medical science.

It was sub-divided into 8 disciplines or categories or clinical branches that would deal with specific issues. These branches include:

1. Kayachikitsa or Internal Medicine

Diseases, according to Ayurveda, could be psychosomatic or somato-psychic. Psychosomatic is when an unwell mind can make the body ill. Fox example: If we are stressed out, then we don’t feel like eating, and because our body is deprived of food and nutrition, it may fall ill.

Somato-psychic is when an unwell body can affect the mind. For example: If we are constipated, then we would feel restless and irritable the whole day.

While finding the cause behind a disease is the least of concerns for modern medicine, Ayurveda thrives on identifying the root cause and healing it, so that diseases don’t come back to haunt us.

Through the means of specialized diet, herbs, massages and therapies like Panchakarma, Ayurveda aims at nipping the root-cause in the bud, so that the trigger of the disease is removed and not just the symptom. This is what Kayachikitsa deals with.

2. Shalakya Tantra or Ear, Nose and Throat Medicine

One of the most renowned Ayurvedic texts, Susruta Samhita discusses close to 72 types of eye diseases including cataract, blurred vision etc and their cure through various medical and surgical procedures.

Apart from eye treatment, Shalakya Tantra also deals with diseases of the ear, nose and throat.

3. Agada Tantra or Toxicology

Agada Tantra deals with pollution of various kinds – air, water, food poisoning etc. It also deals with toxins in plant or animal sources, epidemics and pandemics.

4. Kaumarabhritya or Pediatrics

Kaumarabhritya or Pediatrics deals with pre and postnatal care, midwifery, childbirth and caring for the newborn and the new mother. Issues include the right way of conceiving, choosing the child’s gender, constitution or prakriti type, lactation, proper nourishment of the mother and the baby, and so on and so forth.

5. Shalyatantra or Surgery

Despite being a medical system that is considered to be older than all religions and civilizations, Ayurveda had a rich knowledge of surgical procedures. Sophisticated surgeries, intestinal obstructions and operations were performed centuries ago as part of Ayurvedic treatments. This knowledge is believed to have spread to various parts of the world, with various cultures adopting and assimilating Ayurveda into their own healing systems. Though much of Ayurvedic surgical knowledge was lost due to invasions and wars, a significant part of it still remains and is practiced.

6. Bhuta Vidya or Psychiatry

This branch of Ayurveda specifically deals with illnesses of the mind. Specialized diets and herbs are prescribed and the patients are also encouraged to practice yoga, meditation, pranayama or breathing exercises and several other techniques that can help calm and relax the mind.

7. Vajikarana or Reproductive Medicine

Vajikarana deals with two different aspects – 1) It deals with reproductive issues including male and female infertility, erectile dysfunction, impotence etc, and 2) It helps channel excessive sexual energy towards spiritual enlightenment.

8. Rasayana or Rejuvenation Therapy

With the use of several Ayurvedic rasayanas, this branch of Ayurveda works towards rejuvenating an individual, improving his/her sensory perceptions, bringing back youthfulness and slowing down the aging process. Prevention of good health and enhancing the longevity of life are the primary objectives of this branch of Ayurveda.

Enhancing the quality of life through good conduct, ethics, actions and behavior is also discussed as part of aachara rasayanam.

Defining Life from an Ayurvedic Point of View!

By now we have clearly understood that Ayurveda is a natural science that believes that we are all a part of Mother Nature. We also mentioned in one of our earlier posts that the knowledge of Ayurveda was acquired by the sages or rishis of India after understanding the universe and its creation in detail, which they passed on to future generations through Atharva Veda and several other classical Ayurvedic texts and scriptures.

Ayurveda views human beings as a whole – one that includes the internal and the external environment. Both these environments - the internal and the external, are constantly interacting with each other and understand the same language. They, in fact, are made up of the same material and energy. The variation in the form happens due to a variation in the concentration of the material and the energy. This is applicable to all living and non-living beings. So, there is not much of a difference between say a human being, a dog, a tree or a stone. We are all made up of the same material and energy. The only difference is in the concentration of the material and the energy, and that’s why the different forms.

While other medical sciences describe ‘Life’ as an event that comes to an end through the means of ‘Death’, Ayurveda believes that ‘Life’ is a continuum that never ceases to exist.

Ayurveda defines ‘Life’ as a continuous, incessant flow of material and energy. This flow is taking place in some form or the other – either as a human being, an animal, a plant or any other living being. Once this form, i.e. a human being or any other living being ceases to exist, ‘Life’ moves on and takes up another form.

We are born out of nature, we eat the food provided by nature, we breathe the air provided by nature, we drink the water provided by nature and when we cease to exist… our body will also go back to the nature and take up another form – be it a plant, an animal or any other living being.

That’s the reason why they probably say ‘what goes around comes around’. If we throw something as waste, then that will either be consumed by another animal or take up the form of a plant, and will come back to us in the form of our food. Likewise, water thrown as waste will go back to the earth, mix with the water table and then come back in the form of a river, a lake or even our drinking water.

It’s the concept of oneness that sets Ayurveda apart from all other healing systems. Follow this series to know more about the various disciplines of Ayurveda.

What is the Objective of Ayurveda?

As we mentioned in our previous post, Ayurveda – ‘Ayur’ meaning ‘Life’ and ‘Veda’ meaning ‘Science’, is ‘The Wisdom of Life’. Ayurveda is a holistic healing and wellness science that was passed on to the Indian sages or rishis from the Gods themselves. The purpose of Ayurveda as a medical system is to safeguard health while enhancing the longevity of life.

Much before modern science could even decipher the connection between body, mind and soul, Ayurveda established the fact that there is an intrinsic connection among the three. It firmly believed that a healthy mind can only be possible if the body and soul are healthy and vice versa. Ayurveda advocated and practiced the philosophy of maintaining the perfect balance or harmony among the three – body, mind and soul, for an individual to lead a healthy and disease-free life.

Ayurveda is not a mere healing system. It is much more than that. It is a vast ocean of wisdom designed to help people stay healthy and vibrant, while realizing the full human potential.

Charaka Samhita beautifully explains the purpose of Ayurveda:

‘The purpose of Ayurveda is to protect the health of the healthy and to alleviate disorders of the diseased’.

So, in simple terms, Ayurveda has two different aspects to it: 1) The Preventive aspect and 2) The Curative aspect. The Preventive aspect deals with methods, recommendations and ways of life, which if adopted and followed religiously from the beginning, can boost the strength and resistance of human beings physically, mentally and emotionally in such a way that they can protect themselves from diseases.

The Curative aspect deals with providing relief to the diseased. Ayurveda recommends the use of several herbs, massages and therapies etc and even recommends subtle alterations to dietary habits and lifestyle, for an affected individual to get back his/her state of good health.

Ayurveda also deals with the mental and spiritual aspects of life. It explains the difference between good and bad life. It explains the difference between good thoughts, behavior and actions (the promoters of health) and those which are inappropriate (the non-promoters of health like anger, jealousy, greed, lust etc.)

As per Ayurveda, a happy and healthy life is:

One that is devoid of any physical, mental or emotional disturbance,

One where the sensory perceptions are fully functional,

One where Ojas (Vitality), Tejas (Shine) and Prana (Energy) are at their optimum,

One where the person can perform all duties towards himself/herself, his/her family and the society without any obstacles,

One where the person possess all virtues and is respected in his/her community,

One where the person is happy and has attained physical, mental, emotional and spiritual peace.

Need they say, is the mother of all inventions! Whenever there is a need, living beings, at least the ones with a strong survival instinct, do figure a way out. The same could be said about various medical systems.

It is safe to assume that diseases happen to almost everyone. And when they do happen, the need and a strong desire to get back to normalcy can compel the diseased to find a solution. But what if the solution provides just symptomatic or temporary relief, and does not guarantee that the disease won’t come back to haunt again? Not a very happy situation, right?

How about we tell you about a medical system that had an incredible understanding of what could cause diseases, and hence suggested ways to prevent them from happening in the first place. This science primarily dealt with preventing the diseases from happening, rather than worrying about curing them once they happen. Yes, it did have, and continues to have a curative aspect too.

You guessed it right! We are talking about the ancient holistic healing and wellness science of Ayurveda. Though it is estimated that Ayurveda is a 5000-year-old science, there is enough evidence to assume that this medical system - that originated in India and is now considered a boon to mankind, had a history that goes way beyond that.

Tracing the History of Ayurveda!

It is believed that Ayurveda – ‘Ayur’ meaning ‘Life’ and ‘Veda’ meaning ‘Science’, or simply put ‘The Science of Life’ – was a theory that evolved with a deep understanding of the universe and its creation. Through penance, meditation and pious spiritual practices, the ancient rishis or seers of India are said to have acquired this deep knowledge. These rishis understood the fundamentals of existence, organized them in a systematic manner and then compiled philosophical and spiritual texts, which are famously known as Vedas.

Ayurveda is one such Veda, which deals with safeguarding health and enhancing the longevity of life. Its origin can be traced back to Atharva Veda, where there is an elaborate mention about various diseases and their cures. The Atharva Veda contains 114 hymns which have been described as magical cures for diseases.

Legend has it that Dhanvantari or the God of Ayurveda received this wealth of knowledge from Lord Brahma himself. Vedas and Puranas describe Dhanvantari as the Physician of the Gods, who appeared from the ocean during the Samudra Manthan holding a pot of nectar, when the Devas and the Asuras or Demons were churning the ocean.

Ayurveda developed significantly during the Vedic period and later also incorporated some valuable knowledge from non-Vedic systems such as Buddhism and Jainism. From 6th century BC to 7th century AD – an era known as the Samhita period, Ayurveda saw a systematic development and was recognized as an organized healthcare system with a number of classical works being produced by several prominent Ayurvedacharyas.

Ayurveda then went on to influence medical systems worldwide. By about 400 AD, Ayurvedic literature was translated into Chinese and the Chinese medical system incorporated several practices that were intrinsic to Ayurveda.

The Holistic Nature of Ayurveda!

There is a reason why Ayurveda is considered to be a holistic science – it focuses towards attaining complete health – one that is achieved not only through a healthy body, but also through a healthy mind and soul.

Ayurveda is a completely natural science. It advocates that optimum health and well-being could be attained and maintained, if we synchronize our body, mind and soul with the rhythms of the nature – follow the natural routines, eat foods produced by the nature, have balanced thoughts and actions, and lead a simple and uncomplicated life.

All we need to do is strive towards achieving this perfect balance. Simply because, balance is health while an imbalance is what is known as a disease or ailment.
