Yet another Shopping Cart Component for Classic ASP

Like my previous Paging component, I wrote this shopping cart component during my classic ASP days. Nothing was so easily feasible in classic ASP. Complex applications needed to be developed as COM components and the DLL required to be registered on the deployment platform. Ahhh, we all can imagine the pain.

This is a very light-weight Session-driven shopping cart written in VBScript. You can download the Shopping Cart from here and plug-n-play in your classic ASP applications.

Shopping-Cart Statistics

The example code includes the basic operations of shopping cart to let you understand how to add/update/delete items in cart. The unique key to any item in cart is the product-code or item-code. If an item or product is being added to cart and if any item in cart with same product/item-code already exists then the quantity of the item in cart will be increased by 1.

You also have option for cart statistics which you can use on every page to display the current cart stats. You can modify the look and feel the way you want as per your page layout and structure.

Entrecard Works! It really drives the traffic, but..

I was an un-known blogger since long. But now there are few to many, who know me. Thanks to Entrecard. My blog back-links and number of returning users have increased evidently. May be its not humongous traffic but if you compare the results with past, then it really really makes sense.

Check out my Google Analytics..

The Red circled area indicates the hike in number of unique visits per day. I'm constantly analyzing my reports to better the blog. Look at this now.

I registered for Entrecard on 30th April,2008. And since then, the top most referrer is Entrecard only. This really proves the traffic driving capabilities of Entrecard.

Word of Caution - But Who (what) drives the traffic ?

One thing I observed is, there is no significant traffic coming from Entrecard ADs displayed on various blogs, which one purchases from Entrecard by spending those credits. Traffic from those ADs (which you've purchased in lieu of those hard-earned EC credits) are not promising and hardly counts, So the incoming traffic from Entrecard is only motivated by other registered Entrecard bloggers' who wants to earn point by just droping in your blog. So, do you really think it's genuine traffic ? Well, up to some extent Yes! because it's your blog content which motivates the readers to come back. But I think it's a great effort to build a bloggers' community of its own kind.

Entrecard is losing their core objective here. The purpose of the system, to drive the traffic by Entrecard adverts stays defeated when most of the bloggers visit different blogs, just to drop by to earn that single credit.

Is Entrecard economy worth ?

Well, I really found some critical issues while evaluating the worth of such a credit system. A very important variable which should have been attached with the economy is WEIGHT of a credit.

Consider this..

The credits earned by a DROP, should not be always a static 1 credit. The more you drop, more should be the number of credits earned by every drop.
The same thing implies to the blog, which receives a DROP. The higher the number of drops received by a blog, the higher the credits it should earn for every eventual drop.

The static nature of the economy can drive towards very high inflation over credit system.

This mechanism can motivate the droppers to drop more and at the other hand, you gain a parameter to evaluate the popularity of a blog in Entrecard network. It's quite easily feasible to derive a mathematical function to calculate these values. Somehow, I feel the economics of Entrecard are static.

I'm also not in favour of the method that calculates the price (in credits) to buy an advert on a blog. Imagine, there are lot many blogs around, not every blog has same price and you can not just make the function to be a power of 2 for number adverts which are in queue for advertising on that blog.

Final words!

I must say, Entrecard drives good traffic by motivating ~~bloggers~~ droppers to drop by every blog but the system needs lot of improvements and changes. The purpose should be very serious and meaningful. You just don't visit a blog to earn credit to drop by and if so stays the system for long, I predict bloggers will eventually lose the interest.

How would you like to have at least an extra hour in your day just for you and your family to have more fun? Even if you're working from home doesn't mean you have more freetime. There can be a tendency to work longer hours due to the flexibility you have by working from home.

These ideas if implemented will consistently give you freetime and the chance to enjoy more of your life.

Fitness First - Exercise regularly and eat healthy food. Eat vegetables and fruits everyday if possible. Avoid smoking and drinking too much, this will help your body gain more oxygen which will help prevent organ illnesses. Do the right thing by yourself and you'll have heaps of energy, be motivated, more productive and happier.

Free Your Mind - Surround Yourself with Positivity! Talk and be friends with positive people, Read inspirational and motivational books to boost your winning energy. Avoid negative people like the plague. They will drain your energy.

Organize your Things -You will save plenty of time, energy, space and money if you clean your working environment. You will even find things you thought you've already lost. This will save you some money because you don't have to buy things you already have. You will feel better which will make you happier, making you stress-free!

Color Your World - If you work and live in a pleasant environment, you'll naturally feel better and happier. A clean, uncluttered home office will definitely make you feel good and happy.

Look Cool - When you look cool and good, you will even feel good, everybody around you will even feel the same. Have an image makeover. Even though you work from home, if you dress well to suit your lifestyle, it will make a difference to how you and everyone else see you.

Have it all Written - Record your appointments list all the things to do and mark your goals. Use a daily planner or a digital organiser that you can take everywhere. This is the most effective way to get things done in time, plan your work and your life.

If you can do it now, do it then. Avoid procrastination.

Refusing is Good - To dramatically improve your productivity and do more of the things you want in your life, you have to be firm with others and let them know if you cannot, will not or are unavailable to fulfil their requests. Neighbours, family and friends can have the mistaken belief that because you work from home you are not really working.

If you constantly say "yes" to everyone else's requests you will never have the time to do what you really want to.

Learn Work Distribution - Don't take all the work by yourself, take what you think you can do best, and let others have theirs. You're not the only one who can the job! There is always someone better than the other. Many people spend heaps of time on mundane secretarial tasks which would only take a quarter of the time spent if done by the person who is really trained for that tasks.

If you have a garden or a pool, you can hire someone to clean it, Hire someone who needs money. You've helped a needing person and you have more free time to do what you want. Investing few dollars is worthy enough to have more time with your family.

Look at this first..

Get this widget!

I came across this very useful, presentable and amazing RSS widget last night on the web. SpringWidget RSS Reader is what they call it. As all other web 2.0 services, I really can't make out any meaning which is really relevant to what it does actually. But that's okay, we are concern with what it does not with what name it does so. I'm an RSS freak, on my Outlook you will find lot of RSS subscription and most of them are sourced by Feedburner. I have always wanted my RSS feeds to be part of my email interactively and I'm sure most of you all out there also need the same. Here it comes, The springwidget as Savior. Springwidget RSS Reader is an RSS aggregator widget in Flash which can embed itself into any Webpage or Email. Once you have provided the RSS source URL to the widget it will start displaying them as displayed above. You can have more than one RSS sources, the viewer will then go to MENU and select a particular provider and then view the feeds in the widget. SpringWidget provides lot of cool features..

You can provide multiple RSS feeds providers, so you can have your own portable RSS reader.
You can adjust the size of the widget while creating so as to fit it into a particular part of your webpage or email.
You can select a colour for the widget so it goes with the theme/style of your webpage or email.
You can select if it should view post's title only or details as well as preferred by you.

3 Reasons Why Alexa does not make sense..

I really don’t trust Alexa Now anymore.
Here’s why

1. It’s Biased

Alexa’s stats are based on the data collected by the users that installed the Alexa Toolbar. Fine. But who’s intrested in downloading the alexa toolbar? What does the alexa toolbar offers?

a search field (present in IE and Firefox, and with real search engines)
popup blocking (present in IE and Firefox)
traffic report
site owner info
related sites ( competitors? )

as you can see, the main features here are useful for webmasters, bloggers, site owners, SEOers etc.
This is not stuff for the average surfer!

Alexa’s user base is not representative of the internet population.

2. It’s Biased

Alexa’s toolbar exists only for Internet Explorer (yes, I know there’s the unofficial firefox plugin, but nobody really uses it.) (yes, I know there must be someone that uses it, but you have to agree that’s an insignificant minority).
And this means

no macs
no linux
no win + firefox users
no win + opera users

not representative

EDIT: an official firefox toolbar has been developed. The question is if it will be used or not. I guess it will not.

3. It’s Biased

First Things First

In this Google guide I’ll show you some less-known google operators and search tips. Please note that since this advanced operators are sometimes used by spam-bot, black hat seos and other people google does not loves, you may bump in 403-Access denied screens.

Things to Know

google is not case sensitive: searching for doughnut is the same as DoughNuT
search operators are case sensitive: searching for doughnuts OR donuts uses OR as the google operator, while doughnuts or donuts does not.
google default is to search for pages that include all of your search terms. Also the order of your search term is somehow relevant.
google excludes common words (also called stop words) like “I” , “the” etc.
some operators can be combined, while others must be used alone.

Try a trick here.

returns links to documents with the given file type.
For example searching for doughnuts filetype:java will find portable and object-oriented doughnuts. try this

Currently officially supported file types are pdf, ps, wk1, wk2, wk3, wk4, wk5, wki, wks, wku, lwp, mw, xls, ppt, doc, wks, wps, wdb, wri, rtf, swf, ans, txt, but other are supported as well, like xml, cpp, java etc.

restricts the results to the given domain. site:ruchitsurati.net will find all indexed page on www.ruchitsurati.net, while site:ruchitsurati.net doughnuts will find all doughnuts-related pages on www.ruchitsurati.net. try this

shows the cached version of given webpage. Other words in the query will be highlighted in the returned page, try cache:www.ruchitsurati.net doughnuts

lists webpages that link to the given webpage. link:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doughnut will list webpages with links pointing to wikipedia’s voice for Doughnut try this

returns pages that google somehow thiks are related to the given page. Not always accurate. try this

returns some informations about the given web page. Typically website and description. try this

define:

returns the definition of a given word. Try define:doughnuts (in case you are an alien and you don’t know what a Doughnut is :) ) try this

Google supports a lot of conversion tools, here is a small guide: try this

you can convert radians to degrees: pi/2 in degrees or convert degrees into radians: 90 degrees in radians try this

you can convert to each of the given bases: 16 in hex , 16 in octal, 16 in binary, 0×11 in decimal

you can also use 2007 in roman numerals (in case you’re building a temple and you need to know how to write the year on it) try this

Google Blog Search and a Wordpress Hack - Another Episode..

Google blogsearch offers some of the default google search operators and other less-known operators. Here they are, with some tips and a wordpress hack
Oh, as always, google is a little nervous when using advanced search strings, so sometimes it returns a 404 not found… it’s just trying to display the well-known 403 because it finds the search a bit suspicious… but the page is missing…

link:

this is a standard google operator, but in blogsearch it really works, while in standard google it displays a small percentage of the known inbound links. Finally a way to discover inbound links without using yahoo or technorati!

inpostauthor:

search for the given string in post author.
Tip: This is a good reason to use your full name while posting, since google blogsearch indexes your name! If you want to gain visibility you should really avoid using a nickname! (well, I discovered this recently, so my posts can still be found searching for inpostauthor:”Ruc” … but this is going to change… this post should be found under inpostauthor:”Ruchit Surati”)
Tip #2:The default wordpress rss-comments module does not use the <author> tag to describe the autor of the comments, so searching for inpostauthor:yourname returns just the blog posts… but if you hack wp-commensrss2.php adding

<author> <?php echo get_comment_author_rss()?> </author>

to the comments loop, for example before the <pubDate> tag, blogsearch will find also your comments.
If you want to test it, just write a comment in this post, wait for google blogsearch to read the rss (it’s very fast, something like ten minutes should be enough) an check with blogsearch!.
I think I’ll wirte a wordpress plugin for this.

update: since wordpress 2.1, the author is included by default in comments rss… there’s no need for this hack anymore :)

Getting Started with Ruby On Rails. A MUST watch screen cast by Rob Conery.

Yesterday, I was digging universe to find out some screen cast or article to get me going with Ruby On Rails. I had heard a lot about Ruby and the Rails platform. After delivering a critical assignment, I got some time for my learning needs. Within no time I could find out this wonderful screen cast by Rob. For those who don't know about Rob, Rob works with Microsoft, in ASP.NET team. He is also the architect of the Commerce Starter kit, one of the few early freebies and samples available at asp.net official website. Rob is also the creator of the magnificent Subsonic project.

Here's the the Ruby On Rails preview screen cast. I found this screen cast to be of a great value hence posted on my blog.

Sharing and gaining, knowledge and information has always been my passion. I just love this. Sometimes you get to talk to unbelievably talented people and it just makes your day. I have been attending sessions on different technology topics and development platforms for a long time now. It always worth doing so. More you do more you get hungry for. After all its a hungry mind out there in all of us.

You always help the next generation by sharing and giving whatever they need with whatever you can deliver. I got an opportunity to deliver a session on .net fundamentals last week at a good company out here. They wanted me to take a session on .net fundamentals and basics. Definitely, I opted for that. Believe me though I've been working on that platform for a long while now, to comprehend the contents in a presentation and a session of two hours was quite a challenging task. After putting lot of efforts, I could some how managed to do that.

It started out well, and eventually I dragged it towards an endless discussion which everybody just enjoyed it. We discussed in detail on CTS, CLS and many more issues. I inspired them to ask questions be it silly or meaningful, but they must ask. I had to gain them the confidence for working on .net platform since some of them were just college pass-outs and freshers hence.

With that note, I'm publishing my presentation on this blog which I showcased in the event. Hope it might help some one out there!

Searching deep - real deep into web, A neat google trick..

The Google trick:

Google search engine provides a sophisticated set of operators which anybody can use straight in google search box. Let me brief you with some of such operators and then continue to the actual usage.

-inurl:x - This operator allows you to search into the URL of the result page. It will not search in the page content, mind it. Here, x is the type of the page. If x is set to be HTM or ASP, then it will search in URL of only HTM and ASP extended pages. quite good, right ?

-intitle:"Title string" - Almost every page on internet has a good title describing it self. For this trick, we'll never come across a page with No Title.

The string "Title string" can be composed of some dynamic and static components. Say for example, I created this Title String..

"index of" +("/ebooks"| "/book") +(doc) +"photoshop" "Last Modified"

As you can see, there are five components in the string.

index of - a simple string

("/ebook" | "/book") - at run time when submitted to google for searching, it will treat it as "index of /ebook OR index of /book". I hope you got it.

(doc) - As above only, but doc will be treated as file name component, rather, but dynamic.

"photoshop" - The file name component again, but static.

"Last Modified" - I leave it up to you to understand this.

When you search with this string in google, you'll be amazed to see the results.

You can find ebooks, Free softwares, university contents for students and believe I've tried it in almost all possible forms.

Ex: If you need to find out mp3 of some x artist. Then you'll type it as...

Mobile Web Server - An Apache port to Symbian Platform - Part I

Yes, you've got it right. The first ever HTTP web server for mobiles and it does all you can expect, in fact it does more then what you expect. Nokia Beta Labs has come up with a Web Server for Mobile phones. The first working prototype was deployed in October, 2007 and I've been chasing the project for every bit of it so far. Currently you have the version 1.2 Beta released on their web-site. Basically, it's an Apache port to Symbian platform and the web-server is deployed as a Symbian application which comes as a SIS file package.

I will blog about this as a series of posts, with this being the Part I itself. In this post, I will have you installed your first working mobile web server and provide you with features and functions. Later parts will include the architecture, how it works, the application areas and will try to elaborate more useful information and details on the web-server. So, here we go..

Getting Started:

To start with it, you must register and you can do so by filling up the form at this location. You must choose a valid and available Sub-Domain name for making your cell-phone uniquely reachable on the internet. Like mine is ruchit.mymobilesite.net and you can hit to the web-server running on my cell-phone by typing this URL in any web-browser, anywhere in the world. So, please choose a good name as well. The web-server can host CGI applications on py60 (Python for S60), static HTML web-pages and it comes with pre-bundled application with basic services which you can access at your URL, which in my case is http://ruchit.mymobilesite.net , as I said earlier. Once you've reserved a unique location on the web for your Cell-Phone + Web-Server, you can download the web-server and install it on your cell-phone. You can download the server from here. You can use Nokia PC suite to install the server application. After installation, your application menu should display with the icon of the server like this..

Now, start the application by clicking on the icon and you should see the main application menu. Now, our objective is to let the server know is identity by binding it to the respective URL, in my case as you know it'd be http://ruchit.mymobilesite.net. When you run it for the first time, it will detect it as fresh installation and will prompt you to punch in the most basic details to let itself bind it to a unique Internet location. You can download the User Manual from the web-site in order to complete the installation and play around with it in more details. Once you've started the server successfully you should see this screen on your mobile.

And yes, Symbian S60 2nd and 3rd edition phones have multitasking capabilities, so you can let this server be running in background continue working as normal. Phone like N95 and higher E series phones, have floating point units, which makes it a breeze.

Features and Functions:

You/Anybody can access your Web-Server by typing the associated unique URL, you gained as part of your registration process. You can have administrator logging into your cell-phone or you can entertain guest users as well. They will have following features accessible.

Camera: The person logged in can access your camera. The person can take pictures by clicking a single button and he can watch it straight on the browser and he can save that picture on local desktop. He can't have the video streaming as this way beyond the scope of possibilities, demanding good amount of resources. Yes, you can think of real good ideas to tap on this feature. Like, you can so immediate sharing or remote cam kind of solution.

Web Chat: You can chat with the cell-phone owner in real time with his approval. It supports some smileys too.

Messaging: You can send a single message to the cell-phone owner like a quick-drop message for owner's information or for any other important stuff.

Calendar: You can access person's calendar entries right in the browser. You can manipulate them if you've enough rights or you can add one. How about adding your birth-day in your friends mobile without his knowledge and check back his expressions, thinking when reminded, "Hey, I never did it!"

Phone Log: You can access owner's Dialed Calls' Logs, Received Calls' Logs and Missed Calls' Logs in real time.

Presence: You can view cell-phone's status and availability information, on which the web-server is running. You can learn, if an active call is ongoing or what's battery level of the server phone or even the data bearer of the web-server, either EDGE, 3G or WLAN.

Send SMS: You can send an SMS to any-other cell-phone number from the web. This will be charged into owner's telco. account.

GuestBook: You can fill up the guest book of the owner, if you like.

Contacts: You can access owner's phone book on the web and manipulate, If you've got enough rights. How about checking a number you need without bothering your friend by asking, "Hey, do you have this guy's number?".

Gallery: You will have access to owner's pictures album both on phone memory and external memory facilities.

Recently, Windows Live team at Microsoft has released a light-weight, web page control for Windows Live messenger. Once plugged into your website's page, visitor's can spot if you're online and no matter they have a LiveID or not, they can start a live chat session if you're online in your Windows Live messenger at your local desk or workstation. Like, I've put the control/gadget in my blog post, you can also have one in your blog or website. Yes, it is a real good alternate for your Live Chat Solution, quite amazing, right !!!

Script# is a C# based development platform which when compiled generates JavaScript code instead of IL. Sounds cool, right? Well, it's more than that. Long time No see - But Now I'm back.

Posting after such a long time reminds you of your early blogging seasons. Well, I used to visit my own blog everyday and wonder if I can post something today, but helpless. I've just changed my job and was extremely busy with final workout and hand over processes. This took me so long and busy that I never had time to blog. But now I'm done with that and will start blogging again with the same spirit that brings all of you keep hitting my blog every other day. Thanks to all that my alexa ranking has gone very high in this short span, yet not good, but the growth pattern is good. And yes, I've started getting very good traffic from google with keywords related to my post contents and I've really ranked better in competition with other big old portals providing the similar content.This proves the old blogging myth that says original content always wins. Anyway, that's all folks for now. Keep knocking the doors and I'd have something good to share for all.

I will soon post the details of my new portfolio and achievements with my last job. Hey, I got to complete my Masters' in the mean time. I will also put the information regarding the same though it may not be of your use as well but may be that, you could get an overview of what geeky stuff I've been doing for last couple of years in this very corner of the world.
