March 7, 2025. My daughter  Isabel Rucker had an art show on “The Time Ecosystem“at the one-of-a-kind Larry Spring Museum in Fort Bragg, California. Larry Spring was what you might call a folk scientist and an outsider artist. For Isabel’s show, she formed fresh ideas about  notions of time, and how they mix together.  She and I presented a conversation about her ideas, bringing in the fourth dimension as well. About 40 of us. We sat on rows of low benches, outdoors, at dusk, bundled up, philosophers all.  The event was backed by the Redwood Time Project of the Spring Museum, the museum director Maureen McKeating, and resident museum artist Anne Beck. Over my long career, I’ve used math, computer graphics, writing, and painting as ways to express myself, and to get clearer images of certain things that interest me.  Four channels, all looking at the same thing. Mathematical logic, fractals, science fiction, post-pop surrealism. June 12, 2016. Michael Blumlein read this essay/memoir called “Unrestrained and Indiscreet” at the SF in SF series in San Francisco, during an event I shared with him. Blumlein’s deep and courageous piece begins with a light-hearted account of naming a minor Sierra peak after the author Henry David Thoreau. The talk progresses to an increasingly agitated discussion of Thoreau’s eventual death by tuberculosis—and Thoreau’s relative silence on this topic. And then all at once Blumlein switches to a harrowing personal account. He tells about learning that he himself has lung cancer, about having large sections of his lungs removed, and about learning that the treatments have failed and that he’s approaching death.
