I Love You Mini Envelope Book

Hey! Today I'd like to share with you a really cute little mini book that I made for Jeff for Valentine's Day.

The book is made from 6 little envelopes bound together with washi and artist's tape; and each envelope holds a tag with a special note inside.

Supplies Used:

6 Envelopes (You can use any envelopes for this project -- I used miniature tiny bag type envelopes for mine).
Artist Tape (Masking Tape will do)
Washi Tape
Binder Clips/Clothespins
6 Tags cut to fit inside your envelopes
Random Stamps & Embellishments for decorating

Step-by-Step:

1. The first step is to stamp/decorate the front and back of all your envelopes. I stamped the day of the week on the front of each of my envelopes; and the red punchinella pattern on the back.

When you're finished decorating your individual envelopes, we'll move on to binding the book together.

2. Stack all your envelopes together in order. You are going to be taping the CLOSED side of the envelope (the side across from the opening). Hold your envelopes together and place a strip of artist (or masking) tape binding together the group of envelopes. Don't worry if its not super stuck together just yet, we'll be taping the inside envelopes together in the next step.

Trim off the excess tape from the top and bottom of the book of envelopes, and grab your washi tape for the next step.

3. Now we are ready to bind the inside pages together. Open your book up to the first set of pages. Place a strip of washi tape down the center, making sure that you get the tape on both sides. Repeat this step for each of your inside pages.

Once you trim off the excess washi tape, grab two binder clips (or clothespins) and clamp down your binded edge. This will ensure that your tape sticks as much as possible and that the pages on your book will open easier. Leave on the clips for an hour or two, and then we'll move onto the next step.

4. The last step is to add in the tags and decorate the cover of the book. Grab your stamps, and your stickers, and whatever other embellishments you're in the mood for and go to town.

Stick a tag inside each of the envelopes, decorate the cover and then you're totally done! I added some bling and a little heart to my cover.

There were so many things that really grabbed at me, and I knew I would want to use it as inspiration.

The Personal is Political - Step by Step

Happy Monday everyone! I hope your weekend was awesome :)

Today I'm going to share the step-by-step process of my latest layout "The Personal is Political". We are going to look at how to print directly on your layout, and creating fun geometric patterns with simple punches.

**Warning: Photo Heavy**

You can read a little more about the layout, and why it was so special here.

To create the journaling directly on my layout: I started out with a sheet of kraft cardstock which I cut down to 8.5x11. I typed up my journaling in MS word (any word processing program will do). You can pick up that cool typewriter font here. I used the 'print preview' function to determine if my journaling was going to line up where I wanted it. When I was satisfied, I printed directly on the 8.5x11 sheet of kraft cardstock. I also wanted a slim white border around my layout, so I trimmed the sheet down about 1/4" on all sides and mounted it on white cardstock.

Now on to embellishing! Using simple punches to create fun geometric embellishments is fun and easy. I grabbed two circle punches: 1 3/8" and 1 1/2", and a square punch 1 3/4" (not pictured).

First we will make the square with the circle inside. Grab your larger punch (1 1/2") and punch a hole in your paper. Try not to punch it too close to the edge of your paper, we need room around the entire circle.

You should be left with your paper looking like this:

Now pick up that same sheet of paper, along with your square punch. Slide your paper into your punch so that the circle is lined up evenly in the center of your square punch.

Once you punch the square, you should be left with a little piece that looks like this:

Repeat this process as many times as you'd like to create the above shape. Because of the odd shape, I decided that the easiest way to adhere these would be with my Xyron machine, but if you're good with liquid glue or a tape runner you can definitely use those as well.

Now to lay those shapes out on the layout. I put a sheet of white scrap paper along my layout in order to make sure the shapes were in a straight line, and then lined the outside ones up first. Because the frame was wider than the other squares, I lined up the frame before adhering the center two shapes so that there would be the same amount of space between all four elements.

And here is what it looked like once those were lined up and adhered down:

To create the inside circles, grab the smaller punch and use it on a coordinating sheet of paper (or a photo in the case of the frame element). Remember that its much easier to see what you are punching if you flip the punch over so that the opening at the bottom is what you are looking at when you punch.

Adhere these circles to the inside of your square elements, leaving a little bit of room around each of the circles. Then add whatever other embellishments you're feeling like using, round buttons and brads would definitely go well, along with any other simple geometric pattern.

To finish up the layout, I used thickers for the title, and glued down a little bit of black star confetti to make it feel a little bit more magical.

The Personal is Political

TGIF!

I'd like to share a very special layout with you today.

This layout has a few layers of meaning. On the surface, its a documentation of an email conversation I had with a lawmaker; but it holds a deeper meaning for me personally. I really do believe 'The Personal is Political'.

There are so many things that go on in our day-to-day lives that are greatly impacted by politics; whether it be local, state, national, or global politics. Scrapbooking is also a huge part of my day-to-day life, so it seems only natural to have a juxtaposition of the two. And if you'll allow me to delve even deeper for just one moment, this layout marks the beginning of my intersection of scrapping and personal beliefs.

Even if you're not a political person, there are plenty of personal thoughts and things that you can take the time to document. Check out today's Freaky Friday challenge over at Scrapfreak and join in on documenting some things you've had on your mind.

I stayed up late tonight working on some new Project Life journaling printables. I'm gonna pull out my Project Life stuff tomorrow when my new Studio Calico box gets here, and I thought it would be great to have a couple new printables to play around with.

There are two 2.9x4 cards. 'Today' and Photo'. And another 4x6 card with 'This was fun.' They're all together on an 8.5x11 sheet of paper for super easy printing.

I'm super excited to use these cards. I used the corner rounder to soften up the edges, and I have my eye on the 'that was fun' card to use for the Super Bowl. As soon as I'm finished using these in my new Project Life pages, I'll be back to show those off.

Resizing Photos

Resizing Photos: A Necessary Evil

I hate re-sizing photos. I don't really like editing photos in general. I pretty much just want to magic them out of the camera. Unfortunately, editing and re-sizing photos is a necessary evil, especially when you're trying to print pictures for Project Life. To make things a little bit easier, I created a couple different canvases for Photoshop/Photoshop Elements that make it easier to re-size your pictures. These will help you to re-size your pictures down to fit on a 4x6 canvas, and this way you can get pictures printed anywhere. And since 4x6's are much cheaper to print than any of the other sizes, you'll save lots of money.

You can download the files by clicking on the link BELOW the image of the file. These are .psd documents and are for use in Photoshop/Photoshop Elements.

How to use these files:

1. Open the file up in Photoshop/PSE
2. Also open any photos you would like to resize. All your photos will be at the bottom.
3. Come back to this image. Read and then delete the instruction layer (marked DELETE this layer)
4. Drag your photos on top of this image, and resize them to cover each of the gray squares.
5. Save the file as a .jpg (I use a high resolution to ensure good quality prints).
6. Upload your new .jpgs to your favorite picture printing site, or print them right at home.

Project Life | Week 4

January 22-29th

As I was putting this week's pages together, I realized that they were coming together so much easier. I like the idea of focusing on a couple of stories instead of trying to cram in every single little thing that happened. I'm definitely going to keep that in mind going forward.

I ripped out a couple of pages from a Kerri Smith book to use, I love the handwritten art journaling look. I'm definitely going to start looking for more fun things like this on a weekly basis.

Jeff and I send each other cute photos via text messages all the time. The front facing camera on the iPhone is awesome, it really does take the best self portraits.

Loving those Ormolu buttons, I started sticking them to the outside of the page protectors. I don't like the weird bulk they add when they're under the plastic. I did glue them down with zip-dry, so hopefully they'll stay stuck down.

Jeff brought home a couple of fun stickers from Trader Joe's and I thought this one went perfectly.

The little yellow journaling card above is from the Smash journaling books, they are great for PL. They cost $1.99 and have a whole bunch of different pages inside, and you can totally alter them a bit to make them all your own.

Softness

Writing can be such a therapeutic experience, and journaling is no different. I've been having a difficult week, with all these little things adding up and stressing me out. I was finally able to break out of it, and journaling how I was feeling really helped. I created this layout to go along with this week's ScrapFreak Freaky Friday Challenge:

This month's Trends and Design challenge focuses on the idea of softness.
The look and feel of softness can be obtained in many different ways

Muted tones

Whites and Greys instead of Blacks and Browns

Ruffles, lace, fine detail

Fine point pen handwriting, as opposed to bold block letters

Large amount of neutral space and a sparce use of color

A couple of fun things about this layout: First, I made the heart out of some washi-taped paper which I then punched the heart shape out of. Second, I hand carved that chevron stamp up at the top.

Quick Card - Adore

Happy Tuesday everyone!

January is coming to a close, and I'm definitely ready for some warmer weather. Today I wanted to share a quick card with you. I've been trying my hand at cards again, they don't come naturally to me, but it has been important for me to push myself outside my comfort zone.

I cut out the sentiment from some MME paper, and used several punched images to add some interest. I think I'm starting to get the hang of it again lol.

Happy My Birthday!

Happy 26th Birthday to me!

Today is my 26th birthday! I'm having mixed feelings. Mostly because I would have liked to have been back in school this semester and I feel like I'm in a bit of a holding pattern right now. But I'm doing my best to keep busy, learn new things, and make the most of my free time. Project Life is really helping out in that respect, and I'm really grateful for the project and all the work I've been putting into it. Now for the fun stuff...

Project Life Printable: Movie Night

We do a good amount of movie watching here. We'll set up on the couch, make some snacks and hang out together to watch a flick. There are times when I'd like to record that in my Project Life pages for the week. So I designed a quick little printable (be kind its my first one) for 'movie night'.

And its no fun if I'm the only one who gets use out of it, so I'd like to share it with everyone.

It's really easy to print on the Project Life grid cards, or any other 4"x3" paper. I've taken a few pictures to outline the steps below.

Step One: Print your image on a regular sheet of computer paper.

Step Two: Cover your image with a blank grid card (or whatever paper you want the image on). I used a little bit of washi tape to stick my image down, but you can use masking tape, or any removable adhesive.

Step Three: Run your sheet of paper through the printer again. Make sure you are running it through the same direction as before. Tip: if you are unsure which way your printer feeds, mark a corner of your paper before you print, and then make sure your marked corner is in the same place when you go to reprint.

Step Four: Carefully take off the tape. If you are finding that its not coming off easily, give it a quick blast with your heat gun to melt the adhesive just a bit.

Project Life | Week 3

Have you ever had one of those days where anything you do turns to crap? That was my day yesterday. I managed to delete all my edited Project Life photos off my computer twice. Yep, put them on the computer, edited them, deleted them...got them back on the computer, edited them, & deleted them again. And after a little bit of self-pity time, I fixed the problem, and here are my week 3 pages.

And here are a couple close up shots. I didn't have a very photo prolific week, so I struggled a little bit with what to add. I've promised myself that I'm going to try to write up at least one journaling card a night as the week goes on. Even if I don't use that journaling card in my book itself, it will help keep me in the groove of things.

Trader Joe's has awesome packaging design. I used two of their boxes this week; the mac & cheese and the organic mini cheese crackers (both of which are really awesome).

Snuck in one of my new Ormolu flair buttons on this page about Jeff's first day of school. Doesn't he look super excited? I'm so proud of him.

I think potty people are a pretty good staple to keep on hand for when you need to add something to a pocket. Same goes for inspirational pinterest images/posters. Just find one that matches your overall scheme and you're good to go.

The Giants logo was my first try at printing on the journaling cards. I really liked the outline image, I think it came out well on the grid card.

Heat Embossing

Heat Embossing: A Step-by-Step Tutorial

Heat embossing used to scare me to death. Come to think of it, stamping used to scare me to death. Now I've come to love the effect of embossing powder and its awesome grainy texture. Today I'd like to show you exactly how easy it is.

Supplies:

A Stamp (I used a Studio Calico 4x6 starburst pattern stamp)

Smooth cardstock (with textured cardstock it can be harder to get a crisp image)

Embossing ink (I picked mine up at Michael's)

Embossing powder (I used American Crafts Zing)

Step One: Get your supplies ready. Clean your stamp if needed. Ink the stamp very well, make sure to get all of the stamp covered with the embossing ink.

Step Two: Stamp your image onto the smooth cardstock. Embossing ink is a bit stickier than regular ink, so don't be worried if its a bit harder to come off at first. Just pull slowly and you should be fine.

Step Three: Cover your image with embossing powder. Go wild, use as much embossing powder as it takes to cover the entire image. Don't worry, most of it will go back into the jar.

Step Four: Tap the excess powder onto a sheet of paper and return it to your jar. You can tap the sides of your paper, or shake it gently; the powder will stay stuck to your image and fall off the rest of the paper.

Step Five: Grab your heat gun and start move it slowly around your image. This part can take a minute or two, so be patient.

Step Six: When the powder starts to change consistency, you'll see the individual drops of powder start to become one cohesive image. It will look wet at first, but dries very quickly.

Step Seven: Add whatever embellishments you'd like, and you're good to go.

Blank Journaling Cards

Scrapping can be a time intensive hobby; taking photos, designing pages, writing the stories. I used to think I needed a few hours to even start playing around. This led to not much scrapping getting done. Which I must admit, is pretty crappy. Especially because scrapping, and crafting in general, makes me happier and more productive all around.

Fortunately I've come up with a few different ways to be scrappy even when I don't have a lot of time on my hands. Lately I've been playing around with some blank journaling cards. Stamping, alpha stickers, doodling, etc. Basically whatever I grabbed out of my stash. Sometimes it just feels good to make something, even if it is only a couple inches big. It may sound silly, but I think I sleep better when I have a sense of accomplishment at the end of the night.

Here are a couple of examples of some blank journaling cards that I spruced up with my stash (see if you can spot the super old-school Studio Calico stamps).

I was thinking this would be a great card to stick in a Project Life pocket as a placeholder for when I'm waiting for photos to be printed.

When using a big stamp and overlapping, remember to stick more than one journaling card in there and get the most out of your image.

Quick stamp at the bottom of the grid cards will make for easier storytelling later on. These are the kinds of cards that I like to grab in the middle of the week and just jot down a quick anecdote.

I figure you can't ever go wrong with frames. You can journal inside them, add a photo, embellish them more, or just leave them as is.

The new Jenni Bowlin day of the week stamps came in handy. I think any day/month stamps are essential to Project Life. The love card is just a doodling of mine from a night we were watching some TV. I'm planning on putting a little picture of us together up at the top and maybe a little bit of washi at the bottom to finish it up.

The last one for today is as simple as a scrap of patterned paper, a sticker, and some quick doodling around the outside.

And think of it this way: If you take 20 minutes during the day, 2 or 3 days a week, to make a fun journaling card, you'll have some awesome goodies for your scrapbook at the end of the week. When getting around to putting together your pages, you'll be super thankful for those couple of minutes that you took out of your day to make something uniquely you.

The best thing about making journaling cards in advance is that you can always add more to them later on if you wish, and if you're running short on time, they're ready to go. The Becky Higgins blank grid cards are inexpensive enough that I don't really feel bad if I don't use them all immediately. Like I said originally, sometimes it just feels good to make something crafty when you have a couple of extra minutes.

December Daily 2011: Finishing Up Part 2

Finishing a project can take an emotional toll. Putting time and effort into anything, you always hope to be rewarded in the end. Completing my December Daily album was no different. This is the fourth year I've undertaken the month-long project, and it's the first year that I've completed it in its entirety.

The last couple pages of the book were definitely the most challenging. Trying to finish up I got the feeling that all the creativity had been drained from my body already. But I'm proud of my perseverance, as well as super excited to share the end of my book. Thank you for following me on this journey. New Computer!!

A new computer of my very own!

While walking around Staples last night (looking for the new Martha Stewart labels to no avail) I came across this great laptop on clearance! I checked out the reviews and it was a great buy. I've been looking to pick up a new computer ever since my netbook decided to stop working right before Christmas.

Now I can get back to blogging on a regular basis, especially since I'll be able to put Photoshop and Lightroom on the laptop instead of hauling over to the desktop every time I want to edit photos.

Time to get back to the tactile world and work on some Project Life--its way too early to start getting behind!

December Daily 2011: Finishing Up - Part 1

I finished up my December Daily early last week and was finally able to upload my photos. I wanted to keep it simple and quick so I took a photo of each of the two page spreads. Sorry that the overlay tabs get in the way of some of the page. I'll get the full pages up soon. 

This is the fourth year that I've started a December Daily project, and the first year that I've finished it in its entirety. Its a great way to document the holiday, and I'm definitely going to be doing it again this December.
