When it comes to working around your home during the winter, few things can lead to a lower back injury as quickly as shoveling snow. If you live in an area that sees a significant snow accumulation each winter, you may find yourself shoveling for hours over the course of the winter — and putting the health of your lower back in jeopardy with each movement. You can visit your local chiropractic clinic for a back adjustment after an injury, but the best approach is always to take the preventative steps you can to lessen your risk of hurting yourself in the first place. Here are some techniques to keep in mind.

Use The Right Shovel

If you’re using a shovel that is too short, you’ll put your back at risk because you’ll be bending over too far. It’s a good investment to find a shovel that is long enough and comfortable to use. Many stores sell ergonomically shaped shovels that are designed to reduce the risk of lower back pain. You should also consider the size of the mouth of your shovel. If it’s too large, you may be tempted to lift large and heavy loads of snow, thus straining your back. In some cases, a smaller mouth may remind you to take small shovel loads of snow.

Monitor The Weather

Keeping tabs on the weather is always a good idea when snow removal is one of your jobs. Pay special attention to when the forecast indicates that the temperature will rise. When it gets warmer, snow will often get heavier because of the water it contains. Conversely, snow is often light and fluffy on cooler days. If it has just snowed and it’s cold outside but the forecast is calling for warmer temperatures in the next day or two, it would be wise to shovel while it’s still cold.

Think Of Your Feet

Caring for your feet may not seem to have a link with shoveling-related back care, but your traction during this task is important. If you aren’t able to grip the ground, you may be at risk of slipping and falling, which could jar your back. One way to lessen this risk is to buy a pair of snow/ice grips and mount them to your winter boots. These products have small studs that improve your traction on slippery surfaces, thus helping you shovel the snow with more traction and less risk of falling.

If your child has painful sores in their mouth, this can make it very difficult for them to eat or drink. If the sores are very bad, they may refuse to drink or eat anything. For this reason, you need to take your child to a pediatrician immediately to determine what is going on. Below are two things the pediatrician may find that is wrong with your child.

Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease

The hand, foot, and mouth disease comes from the coxsackievirus. The main symptom of this disease is blisters in the throat and mouth. Your child may also have blisters on the bottoms of their feet and the palms of their hands.

Because this is a virus, your child’s doctor will not prescribe antibiotics but instead will tell you the virus has to run its course. The doctor will treat the symptoms, however. There is a mouth wash that can help relieve pain from the blisters. You can also let your child drink cold fluids and suck on ice pops. Do not let them have anything that is acidic, such as orange juice, as this could sting.

Your child may also feel achy, much like when you have the flu. To help with this, give them ibuprofen. You need to be very careful with dehydration if your child refuses to drink.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease is highly contagious and can be passed on through touching, sneezing, and coughing. Your child’s pediatrician will tell you how long they will be contagious so you can keep your child away from other children.

Canker Sores

Canker sores are also known as aphthous ulcers and are small blister-type sores that you will find on the lips and inside of the cheeks. There may also be sores under the tongue and at the base of your child’s gums.

Fortunately, even though canker sores will make your child very uncomfortable, they are not contagious. The cause of canker sores could simply be hereditary, or it could be food allergies. If your child gets constant canker sores, this is a sign there is a problem with their immune system.

If your child bites the inside of their lip or brushes their teeth too hard, either of these things may cause canker sores to appear. There is no specific treatment for canker sores, as the sores go away within a week or two on their own.

A pediatrician such as one from Ada Pediatrics PA can go over these two things with you in much more detail.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) can occur for any number of reasons, and for some people, they are a recurrent problem. Fortunately there are ways to minimize having a UTI in the first place or reduce the number of episodes.

Be Cognizant About Your Clothing

Your underwear should be made from cotton, since it is a breathable fabric and can help wick away moisture from your skin. At minimum, the lining of your underwear should be made from cotton. No matter the underwear you choose, they should fit comfortably. You may need to size up if you have wide hips, a large stomach, or a larger buttocks. Some styles of underwear, such as thongs, are designed to fit more snugly and are not conducive to minimizing infections. Try limiting these styles to when they are absolutely necessary and change your underwear once you arrive home.

Just as your underwear can contribute to UTIs, so can your pants. There is a difference between fitted and tight pants. If you have a difficult time bending over or sitting down, your pants are likely too tight. Choose pants with significant stretch, especially for jeans and workout pants. If you go to the gym or sweat profusely, make sure you change out of your clothing as soon as possible.

Don’t Hold It In

Going to the bathroom to urinate can become a nuisance, especially if you drink plenty of fluids or take diuretics. It is essential to go the bathroom as often as necessary to avoid giving bacteria a chance to flourish in your bladder or begin growing toward your kidneys. If you are in a situation where visiting the bathroom often is not always possible, try to offset your fluid intake with hard candy or taking frequent small sips of water. You should also speak with your doctor about excess bathroom visits, especially if you feel like your bathroom visits do not match the amount of fluids you drink, you frequently wake up at night to visit the bathroom, or you do not fully empty your bladder.

Include The Right Fruits

Certain fruits and fruit juices can minimize the number of UTIs you experience. Cranberries and blueberries are the most useful in managing UTIs. Blueberries are easier to add to different foods, such as smoothies, yogurt, or oatmeal. Both cranberry and blueberry juice can be used to prevent or fight a UTI. Just be sure to find variations that use minimal or no added sugar. Try drinking three to four ounces, twice per day if you want to minimize the additional calories or are not fond of the taste. Another options is cranberry and blueberry supplements, which should be taken with a full glass of water.

If you experience more than the occasional UTI, you should speak with your doctor about underlying causes, such as health problems. Fortunately, most UTIs can be prevented by making slight lifestyle modifications.

Although urinary incontinence is often caused by weak or overactive bladder muscles, your lifestyle can play a part in the problem’s severity. In particular, the foods you eat may have an adverse effect on the bladder, making you more prone to experiencing incontinence symptoms. Here are three foods you’re consuming that could be making your urinary incontinence worse.

Caffeinated Products

Coffee and tea have many health benefits but, unfortunately, they can do a number on your bladder. The culprit is the caffeine these drinks contain. Caffeine is a diuretic that naturally increases urine production and irritates the bladder lining, both of which can aggravate urge incontinence and incontinence caused by an overactive bladder.

It’s best to completely cut out foods and drinks that contain caffeine, including chocolate and sodas. Even decaffeinated beverages aren’t safe, as these products still typically contain a small amount of caffeine. For instance, decaf coffee can still contain up to 13.9 milligrams of caffeine. If you can’t cut out caffeinated products completely, at least work to reduce your consumption to a level that doesn’t irritate your condition as much.

Citrus Fruits

If you have an overactive bladder, another food you may want to cut back on are citrus fruits, such as oranges and grapefruits. While eating these foods is an excellent way to get your recommended dose of vitamin C, the acid these fruits contain have a similar effect on the bladder as caffeine; it irritates the bladder lining, causing leaks or making you feel like you have to go more frequently.

Since acid is the culprit in this situation, citrus fruits aren’t the only things that can cause problems. Tomatoes, sodas, sugar, and processed foods can all contain acid that aggravates your condition. Experiment with eliminating these foods from your diet to see if your incontinence improves.

Water

It’s seems weird that something so necessary for life would hurt your health, but water is one of those things that can aggravate incontinence. It’s not the substance itself that’s the problem, but the amount of water you drink per day. The more water you consume, the more frequently you have to go to the bathroom.

The trick is to find a good balance between staying hydrated and reducing your incontinence symptoms. Your doctor can help you determine the amount of water you should be drinking each day. Alternatively, you can increase the amount of water-laden fruits and vegetables you eat. Foods like watermelon and cucumbers can help you stay hydrated but may not aggravate your incontinence as much as drinking water directly because it takes awhile to extract the water from them.

If your incontinence is so bad that medication and lifestyle changes don’t help, talk to a doctor, such as at Western Branch Center for Women, about pelvic reconstructive surgery. Certain types of surgical procedures can alleviate incontinence symptoms and help you lead a more normal life. For more information about these options, contact your doctor.

Do you experience pain during defecation? Whether the pain is sharp and stabbing or more of an ache, it can certainly be debilitating and worrisome. Here’s a look at the most common causes of pain with defecation and what you can do about them.

Anal Fissures

Does the pain feel similar to that which you experience when you cut a finger or suffer from a paper cut? Have you noticed a little bright red blood on the toilet tissue? You probably just have an anal fissure, which is a small crack in the skin that lines the anus. These tears can occur if you pass hard stool, wipe with rough cloth, or have recently given birth.

To ease your pain, you can try taking a stool softener to make bowel movements easier to pass. Apply a topical pain relieving gel, such as those made for hemorrhoids, to the area if you wish. The fissure should heal up in a week or so. If it does not, then see your doctor.

Hemorrhoids

Is the pain more of an ache or a deep sharpness in your anus and perhaps a little up into your rectum? Chances are, you have hemorrhoids, which are swollen veins in the rectum and anus. They can be brought on by straining during defecation, lifting weights, and childbirth.

To treat your hemorrhoids, try applying a hemorrhoid cream to the area a few times per day. This should help alleviate swelling and make the hemorrhoids less sensitive. You can also sit in an Epsom salts bath every night. If the hemorrhoids continue to cause you pain, see your doctor. Severe cases sometimes require prescription creams or surgical correction.

Rectal Polyps

If the pain is more of an ache and seems to be located further up in your rectum or colon, there’s a chance it’s being caused by rectal polyps. These are abnormal growths in the rectal tissue. Though they are usually nothing serious to worry about, they can be cancerous, so it’s important to be checked out by your physician.

Your doctor will likely schedule you for a colonoscopy at a place like Lincoln Surgical Group PC, during which a special camera will be used to visualize the inside of your colon. If you do indeed have polyps, they will be removed and a tissue sample will be analyzed to ensure they are not cancerous.

Most pain with defecation is caused by minor ailments, like anal fissures and hemorrhoids, which clear up on their own within a week or two. See your doctor if your pain is long-lasting.

Not everyone is fortunate enough to have access to doctors, hospital and urgent care facilities when needed, and the fast increasing cost of even the most basic medical procedures causes many people to resort to self treatment methods. The fact of the matter is that most people don’t care to make doctor appointments unless the symptoms of their ailments fail to go away on their own. You’re even less likely to make a trip to the emergency room unless you have a good reason to be concerned about your immediate health.

On the other hand, going to an urgent care facility, like Billings Clinic, can prevent you from incurring emergency room bills when you aren’t able to see your primary doctor right away. If you exhibit any of these five signs, your illness severe enough to necessitate an immediate visit to an urgent care facility.

1. Labored Breathing – Whether you have asthma, severe allergies or no unknown breathing issues, not being able to catch your breath and get enough oxygen can be a serious concern. Go to your nearby urgent care facility if you are unable to breath normally.

2. Sudden Drop in Blood Pressure – Low blood pressure can occur after you are cut and start to lose too much blood. Additionally, low blood pressure can be a sign of diminishing vital statistics, such as heart rate. If you don’t normally have low blood pressure while in a resting state, urgent care may be needed.

3. Prolonged Vomiting – This unpleasant symptom is something that most people would rather not think of, but too much vomiting can be a sign that your health is in your danger. Strange, dark colored vomit or noticing blood coming up when you expel the contents of your stomach is another reason that you may be concerned enough to see an urgent care physician.

4. Dizziness and Numb Body Parts – Two major indicators of a stroke include confusion and dizziness as well as numbness and loss of feeling in the limbs. Other serious to mild illnesses include dizziness and numbness as symptoms, but victims of strokes can deteriorate in a matter of hours. Get to a doctor, hospital or urgent care clinic as soon as you experience unexplained numbness or dizziness.

5. Severe Swelling – Swelling in any part of the body can be an indicator of an infection or an allergic reaction. Remember that allergies can develop in people at any time, so you may be having a reaction and not have a clue as to what caused it. Swelling so severe that it causes pain or tenderness can mean that urgent care is necessary.

When it comes to diagnosing medical problems, doctors have many tools at their disposal. Taking the time to become familiar with some of these tools will help you ensure that you are receiving the proper care. Ultrasound can be an effective diagnostic tool when it comes to caring for patients.

Here are three reasons why you should be asking your doctor if 3D ultrasound technology might be beneficial in diagnosing your medical problem in the future.

1. 3D ultrasound won’t expose you to radiation.

Having the ability to see inside the body without making an incision can be extremely beneficial when it comes to making a medical diagnosis. While your doctor might be able to rely on x-rays or CT scans to gain access to internal images, these diagnostic tools leave you exposed to low levels of ionizing radiation.

If you are concerned that this radiation exposure could leave you vulnerable, then ask you doctor to rely on 3D ultrasound images instead. An ultrasound will not expose you to radiation, making it a safer diagnostic tool than x-rays or CT scans.

2. 3D ultrasound is affordable.

With the cost of medical care representing a serious concern for many patients, finding ways to reduce the cost of diagnostic tests can be a simple way to help alleviate some of the financial stress associated with your next medical visit.

The machine required to perform a 3D ultrasound is lightweight and mobile, allowing general practitioners and clinics to keep these machines on-site. Since you won’t have to be transferred to a hospital in order to gain access to large diagnostic machines (like those that create x-rays and CT scans), your medical costs will be lower when relying on 3D ultrasound.

3. 3D ultrasound can be more thorough.

Many injuries and medical problems are rooted in the soft tissue and structures of the body that do not appear on x-ray images. When you work with your doctor to use 3D ultrasound as a diagnostic tool, you ensure that your doctor is receiving an accurate representation of your body’s internal structure.

Examining the soft tissue and structures through 3D ultrasound will allow your doctor to complete a more thorough examination and make an accurate diagnosis.

When you need to access diagnostic tools to help identify the source of a medical problem, relying on 3D ultrasound can be beneficial. A 3D ultrasound machine eliminates exposure to radiation while providing your doctor with affordable and thorough diagnostic imaging.

Eating disorders can often wreak havoc on every aspect of your life. They not only affect your internal organs, but they also can affect your own mental health. Therefore, if you have a teen struggling with an eating disorder, then it is important to get them help as soon as possible. While an eating disorder treatment facility is a great place to get help, these facilities can often be expensive if your insurance does not cover treatment. In many cases, it can be difficult to get your insurance company to cover the costs of an eating disorder treatment. Paying for the treatment out of pocket can quickly add up. Fortunately, there are a few tips that you can use to afford the treatment for your teen.

Ask the Treatment Facility About Scholarships

Many treatment facilities often offer scholarships to patients in order to make the treatment more affordable. The treatment facility is aware of the fact that not everyone will have insurance that covers the treatment or can cover the cost on their own. The criteria for each scholarship given out differs. Some scholarships may be awarded based on income while others are based on your child’s own personal struggle. Before applying to a treatment center, ask them about any scholarships or grants that they give out to patients. Since the scholarship is private and not government based, you would need to apply through the program.

Contact a Teaching Hospital

Free dental clinics often exist in low-income neighborhoods to provide people with the dental health that they deserve. Teaching hospitals often open up their doors to do something similar. Teaching hospitals are where many students are still learning. In order to give students real world training, teaching hospitals will open up their doors for free or at a lower cost. The cost is usually significantly cheaper than attending a treatment facility. However, teaching hospitals are still extremely beneficial in helping your teen overcome their eating disorder. The easiest way to find teaching hospitals in your area is by contacting a hospital. They will be able to refer you to eating disorder treatment facilities that fit what you are looking for.

Even though getting treatment for your teen’s eating disorder may be expensive, this does not mean that you should give up. Instead, you may just have to get creative in order to make the treatment more financial attainable for your family. Use these resources to make sure that your teen receives affordable treatment.

Kneecap or patellar dislocations are a problem that often affects girl basketball players around the world. Why is this injury so common in these athletes? And can it be successfully repaired if your daughter suffers from one?

Girls Are More Prone To This Problem

While dislocation in the knee can happen to any student athletes, girl athletes are more prone to this problem. There are a variety of reasons that a patellar dislocation may occur. One of the most common is loose ligaments in joints. Unfortunately, this problem more often occurs in girls than boys, though boys may suffer from knee dislocations in high-impact sports.

While looser ligaments may help provide a girl athlete with a little extra flexibility, it also makes her kneecap prone to looser movement. These movements can cause the kneecap to “lag” behind the rest of the leg when she jumps and shoots during basketball games, making dislocation more likely.

How Basketball Can Contribute

While patellar dislocations aren’t the most common knee injuries associated with basketball, they are still in the top four. It typically occurs when the female athlete changes direction rapidly and the kneecap is put under excessive stress. Just think of your daughter snagging a rebound under her opponents’ basket and pivoting for a fast break.

Those quick changes in direction and speed are hard on the knee, and it may cause them to pop out of place. When this happens, you’ll know immediately: your daughter will scream in pain and fall to the floor. Unfortunately, this kind of injury can recur in athletes year-after-year, making correct treatment absolutely essential.

Surgery Is Typically Necessary

First-time dislocations are generally treated non-surgically by realigning the patella; however, if your daughter suffers from recurring kneecap dislocations during basketball games, assessment and surgery are necessary. Surgery often requires grafting new tendons to the kneecap in order to stabilize it and make it stronger. In other instances, a transfer of tubercle material may be necessary, as well as the use of knee screws and other stabilizing procedures.

Your daughter will likely miss much, if not all, of her basketball season. This is unfortunate, but failure to properly rest her knee while it heals can result in more damage. In fact, it could result in an injury severe enough to prevent her from playing basketball ever again.

While it is often emotionally painful to put your daughter through this kind of surgery, it is necessary to protect her knee health. It can not only protect her from further recurrences of kneecap dislocation, but also give her the athletic strength she needs to be a great basketball player. For more information, contact a clinic like Omaha Orthopedic Clinic & Sports Medicine PC.

Just like people, older dogs can suffer from stiff joints and arthritis. This can make it hard for them to enjoy their former favorite pastimes, including walking and playing. It can even make it difficult for a dog to lie down. The following advice can help you make your pup more comfortable as they age.

Tip #1: Provide soft reclining areas

When young, dogs stake out their favorite resting places without any thought to eventual aging, and then once they are older and feeling pain, they may become loathe to give up these spots. If your dog tends to lie in cold, hard places, such as in a favorite corner of the kitchen or right outside a bedroom door, try adding some comfort to the spots. Purchase dog beds and place them in your dog’s favorite rest areas. Choose beds that come with removable covers so they are easier to keep clean.

Tip #2: Consider adding ramps

For a dog with stiff joints, especially in the hind legs, getting up on the bed or onto a favorite chair can also be difficult. Getting down may be even more painful. There are small ramps or steps you can purchase that are specifically made to help your dog get up and down with no jumping and minimal effort. A few of these placed in key areas can save your dog from a lot of discomfort.

Tip #3: Continue with play time

Exercise helps prevent stiff joints, so don’t let your dog become too lazy as they age. Multiple short, slow walks each day help exercise your dog and keep the joints moving without causing too much stress. Slower moving play is also good. For example, don’t toss a ball since this may lead to painful jumping. Instead, roll it so your dog can chase and catch it at their own pace.

Tip #4: Schedule a vet appointment

Not all joint pain is equal. Some pain is just a standard byproduct of aging and to be expected. This is the type of pain that exercise and a few aids can help without any other treatment. More problematic is actual arthritis and similar joint conditions, which are caused by damage, swelling, or disintegration of joint tissues. A vet can check to see which type of joint pain is affecting your dog. If the cause is arthritis, then your dog may also benefit from medication or a special diet to help fight the inflammation.

For more help, contact a vet or small animal clinic such as Belaire Animal Hospital.
