The battle in the men's Dream Mile, between Jakob Ingebrigtsen, Ollie Hoare and Jake Wightman was fantastic! Jakob had company until the last 200 meters, and he pushed himself on from there. Ollie finished one second behind and Jake was three seconds. What a brilliant and exciting race.

All three of those guys ran as juniors or high school athletes, and Jakob started as an 8 year old. Each has different paths, which path will you follow?

Think about that! How far do you want to go?

I loved the Paris meeting each season. Most seasons, I would fly over to Paris after the US Champs and then visit several of the Diamond League meetings. What did I love about the Paris DL?

Well, the presser day was fantastic. I was able to interview 8-10 athletes at the pressers, and they were relaxed and open.

The meeting should be fun tomorrow. Enjoy!

Adam Gemili and Christian Malcolm, photo by British Athletics

The release (posted here) announced that Christian Malcolm was leaving the UK Athletics. In this article, Stuart Weir, who has followed the problematic tenure of Christian Malcolm, put the tenure in perspective and considers the moves by UK Athletics's Ian Beattie to be very good for the sport. It is really nice to see Stuart Weir happy about the direction of British Athletics and UK athletics. Truly, one of the stories of the last two decades in our sport has been the resurrection of British Athletics from financial ruin and mediocrity to the grooming of generations of fine athletes.

The challenges at both UK Athletics and British athletics have been top management, who seem to have had their own private agendas. I am not naive enough to think that this does not happen in other countries. What is sad is this, without strong leadership, athletes and coaches are lost in the maelstrom of crisis and undeveloped programs.

We wish UK Athletics and British Athletics the best in the future.

Christian Malcolm to leave UK Athletics

British Athletics has today announced that as part of a "revision to the UK Athletics performance plans and structures, backed by the UKA Performance Management Group and UK Sport, UK Athletics can confirm that the role of Olympic Head Coach - currently held by Christian Malcolm - will be discontinued after this summer's European Championships in Munich. Other opportunities created as a result of the revised structure will be discussed with him over that period as a number of changes are made".

Christian Malcolm, photo by British Athletics

The full statement by UK athletics is in a separate post. While the change is expressed in terms of a revision of structures, it is hard not to see this as the final stage of drawing a line under the Jo Coates era. I have written several pieces about Jo Coates, the former CEO of British Athletics. Coates did a number of excellent things while at the helm, but it is generally felt that her achievements were peripheral to the heart of the sport. She will be seen as having dismantled the best media team in the sport worldwide. It was never clear whether she was really committed to the role of UKA in running elite events. The departure of Stephen Maguire and Cherry Alexander (now happily back) was seen by many as catastrophic errors.

Jo Coates, photo by British Athletics

The first two appointments that Coates made were Sara Symington as performance director and Christian Malcolm as Olympic Head Coach. Diversity was one of Coates' keywords, and to have as her first two appointments a woman and a black man suited the narrative. The reality was that, in the view of many, Sara Symington, while a gifted sports administrator, never really understood of the sport of athletics (track and field). Christian Malcolm was regularly described as a lovely man out of his depth. It seemed that he never really gained the confidence of the sport - the athletes, coaches, and administrators.

During the period that Malcolm was in post, there were regular rumors and stories of athletes and coaches being lied to. In November 2021, when the new chairman, Ian Beattie, did his first press briefing, I raised this question specifically with him. I quote my question and his answer in full:

"In the last year, I have become aware of about four incidents when athletes feel that the things that are not true had been said to them or about them, including misinformation being given in selection meetings. I don't want to talk about anything specific but I'm hoping that you can give me an assurance that "a culture of lying" will not continue on your watch".

"Ian Beattie: I can comment on that, and I wouldn't want to preside over any culture of lying. Openness and transparency are key values in what we should be doing. Sometimes there will be difficult decisions, and sometimes people will not agree with the decisions, and that is fine. It is high-level sport, and people will be disappointed sometimes. But I think there is a way of doing things, and doing things properly and with integrity. I am not aware of the specifics you are saying, but certainly, if that was to continue, I would be concerned about it".

Ian Beattie, photo by British Athletics

While Beattie, sensibly, did not get into detail, nor did he deny that athletes had been lied to. I know that he was fully aware of one such incident.

While this week's statement refers to: "opportunities created as a result of the revised structure will be discussed" with Christian Malcolm and quotes Malcolm as saying, "I am very disappointed to hear about the news but understand the rationale around this decision", this seems little prospect of Christian Malcolm being in the employment of UK Athletics after the end of this summer.

Sara Symington, photo by British Athletics

The appointment of Jo Coates is widely seen as a big mistake by the then chairman and board of UK athletics. Coates' appointments of Sara Symington and Christian Malcolm have not been seen as successful appointments. When the UK statement has to be couched in legally defensive terms, the message behind it is clear. The senior management team of Coates, Symington, and Malcolm has been weighed in the balance and found wanting. After this summer, with its three championships (Worlds, Commonwealth, and Europeans), all three will be gone. Jack Buckner will be in post as CEO, supported by Mark Munro under the supervision of chairman Ian Beattie. A new era is about to begin.

INGEBRIGTSEN NEARLY BREAKS EUROPEAN MILE RECORD AT BISLETT GAMES
By David Monti, @d9monti
(c) 2022 Race Results Weekly, all rights reserved, used with permission.

(16-Jun) -- Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen, the reigning Olympic 1500m champion, came within a meter of breaking Steve Cram's vaunted European mile record tonight at the Bislett Games in Oslo, the sixth stop of the 2022 Wanda Diamond League. Sprinting to near-collapse in the homestretch with Australia's Ollie Hoare just a few meters behind, the 21-year-old Ingebrigtsen stopped the clock at 3:46.46, just 14/100ths of a second slower than Cram's time from the same meeting 37 years ago. The time made him the sixth-fastest miler in history, and Cram watched from the stands where he was commentating on the meeting for television.

"It felt great," Ingebrigtsen said in the mixed zone at Bislett Stadium. "I was ready to run fast and was happy to do that and to win. Some work needs to be done before the World Championships, but I will work hard to be in better shape for the World Championships."

On a rainy night which included a heavy downpour during the women's 5000m, conditions were mostly dry for the Dream Mile, the meeting's last event. Ingebrigtsen's two main rivals, Hoare and Scotsman Jake Wightman were keen to race the Norwegian and were all together through the first quarter behind pacemakers Mounir Akbache of France and Boaz Kiprugut of Kenya. The pace was solid, but not too fast, through 800m: 1:53.3.

With the pacemakers out, Ingebrigtsen took up the pace, and both Hoare and Wightman were within a few tenths of the eventual winner through 1000m. Wightman was the first to let go and finished a clear third in a Scottish record 3:50.30. Hoare held on as long as he could, but in the final 200 meters, Ingebrigtsen was able to pull away from the tall Australian who competed for the University of Wisconsin in the NCAA system. Nonetheless, Hoare set an Australian and Oceania record of 3:47.48.

Ingebrigtsen's time was a Wanda Diamond League record.

"It was an awesome crowd, so now I will prepare myself well for Eugene," Ingebrigtsen continued. "Oslo is always perfect, and for me, it's the best meeting in the world, so it was an awesome experience."

In the rain-soaked women's 5000m, Norway's Karoline Bjerkeli Grovdal took the lead mid-race and took the field through 3000m in 8:48.65 and 4000m in 11:42.71. Coming off of a 68.4-second penultimate lap, Ethiopia's Dawit Seyaum --who was not selected for the Ethiopian team for the World Athletics Championships-- started to wind up the pace, and only her compatriots, Guday Tsegay and Letesenbet Gidey, could stay with her. In the homestretch, Seyaum kicked ahead of her rivals to win in 14:25.84. Tsegay got second in 14:26.69 and Gidey third in 14:26.92. Grøvdal set a national record of 14:31.07 in fourth place, and American Alicia Monson set a ten-second personal best in fifth: 14:31.11. Monson is now the third-fastest American of all time.

"I can say that I like the rain, and it brought me happiness today," Seyaum said after her race. "It was a tough race with strong opponents, and I managed to beat them all."

The men's 5000m turned into a last-lap burn. At the bell, five men remained in contention: Ethiopians Telahun Haile Bekele, Samuel Tefera, Getnet Wale, and Milkesa Mengesha; and American Joe Klecker. Bekele and Tefera edged away and were together with 200m to go. Bekele won the final sprint to win in 13:03.51 to Tefera's 13:04.35. Wale got third (13:04.48), Klecker fourth (13:04.92), and Mengesha fifth (13:05.94). Bekele closed the race with a 56.1-second lap.

"It was a good performance from us to have three Ethiopians in the top three positions, and I enjoyed the race," said Bekele. "I felt strong and am happy with the time."

Finally, in the women's 800m Olympic silver medalist Keely Hodgkinson went with the pacemaker from the gun and was never seriously challenged, clocking a season's best 1:57.71. Laura Muir came from the sixth position with 200 meters to go to take second in 1:58.09.

"I was fairly happy, but I wanted faster," Hodgkinson said. "A win is a win, though."

The Wanda Diamond League moves on to Paris on Saturday before breaking for the national championships window from June 23 through 26.

A busy night of changes at UK Athletics. This is the official release that Stuart Weir sent me to provide some background for the ending of the tenure of Christian Malcolm as the Olympic Head Coach for British Athletics.

UKA Statement

Following a revision to the UK Athletics performance plans and structures, backed by the UKA Performance Management Group and UK Sport, UK Athletics can confirm that the role of Olympic Head Coach - currently held by Christian Malcolm - will be discontinued after this summer's European Championships in Munich. Other opportunities created as a result of the revised structure will be discussed with him over that period as a number of changes are made.

The revised plans, which have been part of an ongoing strategy review with UK Sport over recent months, will come into play from September. As part of a range of amendments to the previous approach, the key principles include:

Further Increasing levels of support and engagement with athletes on the World Class Performance (WCP) programme;

A significant increase in financial investment into the personal coaches of athletes on the WCP (Olympic and Paralympic)

Investment into planned new athlete performance and technical innovation centre

Increased investment into Event Group Leadership across the WCP.

To ensure athletes across the programme continue to receive the support and focus required, new roles will be introduced to the programme. As well as the previously communicated incoming role of Technical Director with extensive coaching knowledge to lead the WCP, there will be new event leadership appointments in due course to sit alongside the WCP Head of Sprints & Relays and WCP Endurance Performance Manager that already exists, and a number of additional athlete support roles.

As a result of this change, combined with increasing the financial investment into personal coaches of athletes on the WCP, the role of Head Olympic Coach has been removed from the structure.

Christian Malcolm will continue to deliver his Head Coach role for the duration of this summer's major championships, working alongside Paula Dunn, Team Leader for this summer's World Championships in Eugene and European Championships in Munich.

Mark Munro, interim CEO for UKA, said: "We are extremely grateful and appreciative to Christian for his time and efforts as well as his commitment and professionalism during his time as Head Coach.

"Taking on board a role during a pandemic and the associated challenges that bring - alongside staffing and structure changes - has been incredibly challenging. He has worked hard to steady the ship and continued to be professional throughout.

"Unfortunately, given all the changes we need to make, and the greater prioritisation for investment into personal coaches, the Olympic Head Coach role does not sit within the revised structures. However, we have made a commitment to work with Christian over the summer with the potential for exploring other roles within the structure to enable us to maintain his involvement with UKA.

"Ensuring the WCP is in the right shape to support athletes towards the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games is an absolute priority for UKA. Therefore, we will continue to evolve our systems to ensure greater support for WCP athletes and their coaches, as well as increasing investment into excellent support environments for athletes either locally or at a central point they can access."

Christian Malcolm said:

"I am very disappointed to hear about the news but understand the rationale around this decision.

"My priority now is to continue working in the same way, maintaining professionalism and doing my job throughout the summer. I am fully focused on supporting our athletes and coaches during this extremely busy summer for our sport.

"We have some incredibly talented athletes - some of whom have ambitious aims to compete across three major championships this summer. I'm looking forward to seeing them compete and supporting those individuals towards the World and European Championships, as well as representing their home nations during the Commonwealth Games."

UKA can confirm that the recruitment process for the new UKA Technical Director has been ongoing with a view to appointing shortly, with a start date in September.

This was one of the best Oslo Bislett Games in some time. Oslo is on my bucket list for 2023. The late Maurie Plante loved the meeting and help Oslo for almost three decades. Oslo has always understood that there was juggling between having local stars and global stars. In Norway, they have global stars like Jakob Ingebrigtsen, and in Sweden, they have Mondo Duplantis.

Karoline Grovdal showed some amazing guts in that 5,000m race. She pushed the 3k and 4k and was in it until the last 200 meters. In the spirit of the late Grete Waitz, who thrilled the local crowd, and Ingrid Kristiansen, who set WRs here, Grovdal showed her stuff, and the crowd roared.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen showed that he can win the 1,500m and 5,000m at the Worlds. The Olympic champion at 1,500 meters just missed the 37-year-old WR of Steve Cram by .14! Oh, so close!

And the crowd roared.

Mondo Duplantis battled Mother Nature and slowly moved from 5.81m to 5.91m, and then, finally, to 6.02m. His attempts at 6.10m tired him out on that cold and rainy day.

And the crowd roared.

It was a busy week for Laura who ran 1:57.34 in a mixed-race in UK, just 48 hours previously. I'm really happy with the time, it's one of my fastest times and off a big week of racing and training so I'm very happy with tonight".

The Oslo Dream Mile has happened since 1974. The Dream Mile has been the place where the top milers of the year got together and had their go at the classic mile distance, as the 1,500m was at all of the championships by 1974.

Each year, I would wait to see the TV on the weekend (in the 1970s and 1980s) and the newspaper article on the next day. I remember reading about Seb Coe, Steve Scott, Ray Flynn, and of course, Eamonn Coghlan and Thomas Wessinghage among the mile cognoscenti.

This year was one of the most exciting in the past three decades.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen is a fine middle-distance runner. On February 17, 2022, Jakob ran 3:30.60 for the World Indoor record. Nice way to open the season.

In March, Jakob Ingebrigtsen, ran 3:38.42 on March 19, and on March 20, took 2nd the 1,500m at the World Indoor at 3:33.02. The next day, Jakob had a COVID-19 positive test.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen, Ollie Hoare, Oslo Bislett Games, June 16, 2022, photo by Diamond League AG

On May 6, Jakob ran a well-executed 5,000m at The TRACK MEET by Sound Running, running a then WL 13:02.03.

On May 29, 2022, Jakob Ingebrigtsen won the Bowerman mile in 3:49.76, his 1,500m split was 3:34.19.

The thing about Jakob's training is that his high-quality work, done with very short rests, gives him the ability to handle a 56 pace a lap in the 1,500m/mile and 61-63 a lap at 5000m with a 55-56 last lap.

On June 7, in Trondheim, Jakob ran an 800m for the first time in years, ran 1:47.22, taking 4th.

The Oslo Dream Mile was spectacular. Jakob came oh so close to Steve Cram's incredible record. Steve was doing the global broadcast with Tim Hutchings, and Tim Hutchings did the call on the race. Steve then came back and gave Jakob praise on his race, the fastest in many years.

Please enjoy Stuart Weir's coverage of the event.

The Dream Mile

Oliver Hoare did his best, but no one was going to spoil the narrative of the first Norwegian winner of the Bislett Games Dream Mile. The race goes back to 1974 and was at one time a kind of British Championship with Steve Cram winning it four times and Seb Coe and Steve Ovett also winning with all three breaking the world record in the event.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen won the race but needed a World Lead, National record, and Diamond League record to do it - to be fair, "The mile" is probably not run that often these days. A better stat is that the top four all ran PRs.

Paced through the first two laps in 56.01 and 1:53.30, Ingebrigtsen was tracked closely by Australia's Oliver Hoare and Britain's Jake Wightman for most of the race.

The final results were

1 Jakob Ingebrigtsen 3:46.46

2 Oliver Hoare 3:47.48

3 Jake Wightman 3:50.30

4 Neil Gourlay 3:52.91

Jakob commented: "It felt great, I was ready to run fast and was happy to do that and to win. Some work needs to be done before the World Championships. It was an awesome crowd. Oslo is always perfect, and for me, it's the best meeting in the world so it was an awesome experience. Last year I was sick, so couldn't race here, unfortunately, so it was even more special here tonight, as was becoming the first Norwegian to win the Dream Mile - doing things nobody else has before is really great. I take it one race at a time, it's important to have short-term goals - that's how my mindset works to keep the motivation high. Confidence is a really important thing in sports, and I'm confident in what I do in training and, of course, am aiming for gold in Eugene".

Jakob Ingebrigtsen, speaking with media, 2022 Oslo Bislett Games, June 16, 2022, photo by Stuart Weir

Jake Wightman was delighted to break a 40-year-old Scottish record - although he was not aware until I told him. "I believe so [a Scottish record], but I wanted to be under 3:50, but it was so quick. From the first lap, I was worried about what my last lap would be like. The pace was so hot that I didn't quite have the strength to back it up. It was a lonely last lap.

"There was only one person the crowd was cheering for. It was like playing a hostile away football game. If he is going to attack it like that, that is my best chance of running quick. A little bit disappointed I wasn't closer".

With Jake and Neil each running PRs and Josh Kerr in the mix, too, the Commonwealth Games 1500m looks like a hot race with Hoare facing the three Scots along with some tough Kenyans. Thank goodness Norway is not in the Commonwealth!

Oslo Bislett Games, June 16, 2022, photo by Stuart Weir

The Oslo Bislett Games are one of the most iconic annual meetings in all of track & field. The event is held in the Oslo, Norway, in the Bislett Stadium, a stadium that has seen the likes of Paavo Nurmi, Willie Ritola, Steve Cram, Seb Coe, and Grete Waitz, among others, compete over the last 100 years.

Stuart Weir is there, and his love of this event is evident. That he can brave the hot and cold today in Oslo, shows his dedication. Enjoy this piece.

Happy Birthday, Bislett!

The Bislett Stadium in Oslo is 100 years old. History is all around you. The list of winners of the Bislett medal for the outstanding performance of the Games is like a list of the great and the good of our sport: Mike Boit, Grete Waitz, Ralph Boston, Seb Coe, Mary Decker, Said Aouita, Heike Drechsler, Blanka Vlasic, Usain Bolt and Marlene Ottey to choose but ten.

The Dream Mile, going back to 1974, has its own history with winners such as Steve Cram (4 times), Hicham El Guerrouj (3), Asbel Kiprop (3), and Steve Scott (2), etc. Steve Cram, Seb Coe, and Steve Ovett have all broken the World Record in the race. Coe, in fact, set world records at 800, 1000 (twice), and the mile. Just as I wrote that sentence, Steve Cram walked past me on his way to the BBC commentary position. Seb Coe was interviewed on the infield about Jakob's run. Ovett now lives in Australia.

Bislett 2022 was a sell-out with a two-hour DL program of six men's races, 4 women's, and two field events each. Unfortunately, the women's shot, won by Chase Ealey with a PR of 20.23, was over before most of the spectators had arrived. The pre-program included two and a half hours of local and youth events plus an international 100m para sprint.

Despite the rain, it was a great evening's entertainment with steller Scandinavian performances from Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Mondo Duplantis. There was a good number of Ethiopian flags waving when Telahun Haile Bekele won the men's 5000 in an Ethiopian 1-2-3. The women's 5000m was also an Ethiopian 1-2-3, with Dawit Seyaum winning.

Keely Hodgkinson won the women's 800, followed by Laura Muir for a British 1-2.

Sandra Perkovic got the better of Valarie Allman in the women's discus with a throw of 66.82.

Devon Allen won the 110m hurdles in 13.22 into a headwind from Asier Martinez. His task was perhaps made easier with Omar McLeod not starting. With Grant Holloway no longer invincible and Omar McLeod looking string, not forgetting Olympic champion Hansle Parchment, the event looks like one of the highlights at Oregon. Allen will be right there in the mix.

Sadly the children's snowball throwing competition has been dropped from the program.

I applaud Nike Pre Classic for bringing Paralympians back to Eugene and hope that they continue for some time to come.

Para-athletes participating in Prefontaine

By Sam Fariss

It has been over three decades since para-athletes have been invited to compete at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon. At this year's Diamond League circuit event, however, they are making their return to show that they deserve a spot in the meet schedule.

The Pre Classic, however, is not an anomaly within the track and field community as para-athletes continuously struggle to find events to enter themselves into throughout the season and are rarely invited to big stage events.

"I always tell individuals if you just watch one paralympic race, watch one paralympic event at the moment, you won't even really care about the disability you'll just see athletes out there competing, and you'll become a fan for life," said Blake Leeper.

At the Diamond League meet this year, para-athletes were invited to compete in the men's 400m T62 as well as the women's 100m T63. In para-athletics, the "T" prefix is used when referring to track and jump events which include running and wheelchair races as well as long jump and high jump.

While the athletes were invited to compete at the Pre Classic, the World Para Athletics Championships, which were supposed to be held in Japan, have been canceled. The International Paralympic Committee is currently working toward a plan to host the championships in 2024 - an even further delay from the event that was initially supposed to occur in 2021.

"This is one of the big things I was focusing on, and with the postponement or cancellation of the World Championships, I just want to focus on myself and re-find what I love about the sport and really dial in on why I do this," said Hunter Woodhall.

Woodhall, who is engaged to long jump athlete Tara Davis, has created a platform for himself and his fiancé via social media which has helped to bring more attention and viewers to para-athletics as a whole.

Para-athletes deserve the same level of attention and respect that is given to other track and field athletes, and the media must give equal coverage to para-athletics. Like Leeper said, you'll watch one paralympic event, and you'll become a fan for life.

In the women's 1500m race, Laura Muir had the fastest PB of 3:54.50, but Hirut Meshesha had the fastest SB of 3:57.30. Time was going to tell what, between an SB and a PB, is the best indicator of a potential winner in a race.

Muir was just behind Meshesha in the first lap of the race, with the pacesetter maintaining a gap of about 10m ahead of them. Axumawit Embaye then rapidly moved to the front as they came to the bell, but Meshesha reacted and took the lead again.

It turned into a battle amongst Muir, Embaye, and Meshesha at the front in the last 300m, but Meshesha was able to extend her lead at the home stretch, winning the race in 4:03.9. Embaye followed in 4:04.53 while Muir took third in 4:04.93.

The opposite happened in the women's 800m. Athing Mu, despite having the slowest seasonal best time on the start list, was the star to watch as she made her first diamond league appearance. Soon after the gun, the reigning Olympic Champion ran almost shoulder to shoulder with the pacesetter before beginning to open a gap on the rest on the last lap. 1:57.02 was her winning time, a new world-leading time. Renelle Lamote of France was a distant second in 1:58.48, ahead of Elena Bello in 1:58.97.

For Kenyan fans, the men's 3000m steeplechase was a race to watch keenly and see if there is a possibility of Kenyans getting to rule the event again in the near future. But, Lamecha Girma proved too strong as he opened up a huge gap in the last two laps to win the race in 7:59.23. However, there was some hope for the Kenyan fans as Abraham Kibiwot finished second in 8:06.73, edging Getnet Wale by a micro-second as Conseslus Kipruto followed them for fourth place in 8:08.76.

But, watching the last distance event of the evening, the men's 5000m. One would not help but wonder whether the Kenyan men may actually be exchanging their dominance of the men's 3000m steeplechase with the 5000m distance as Nicholas Kimeli ran an astonishing world-leading, meeting record and a personal best time of 12:46.33 to win the race slightly ahead of his compatriot Jacob Krop who finished just 46 microseconds behind him, also in a personal best time of 12:46.79. Yomif Kejelcha finished third in 12:52.10.
