I’m just starting to get comfortable calling myself an artist

These days, when asked "What do you do," I reply “I’m an artist.”

And the thing that allows me to make such a bold statement as “I am an artist” is that with art, as I see it, achievement isn’t a prerequisite. I don’t have to have awards, or have sold something, or have an exhibit. I don’t even have to be good in the eyes of others.

I like my art and I am happy to share some of it with you here.

Camera Talk

I’m not a camera snob, I’ll shoot anything. I’m not brand loyal. I think cameras are fascinating machines …

and I find it interesting to see the different approaches the many manufacturers have had toward a single goal: shooting good photographs. 

So bring ‘em on.

Join me on my quest to find interesting cameras, buy them, stick some film in them, and shoot them…then write about it. And then I sell them, or give them away, keeping only a select few that I want to shoot again and again.

Road Trip

This is Exactly Where I AM Supposed to Be Right Now.

I like taking photos of old stuff with old cameras. I like old cars. I like road trips. From that, the simple formula for Kooky’s Road Trip was developed. I took too many trips to count, some short, some epic. I drove an AMC Rambler, a Mazda RX-7, a VW Rabbit Pickup, a VW Beetle, an old Ford F-150, and more. And along the way I shot old Canons, Nikons, Minoltas, Pentaxes, Rolleiflexes, Sears, Leica, and too many others to list…and too many rolls of film to count.

And always, the recurring theme of Kooky’s Road Trip is “This is Exactly Where I AM Supposed to Be Right Now.”

Photo Galleries

In the process of pulling together some photos for this website, I realized that I’ve taken a lot of photos over the years. I think I’ve lost more than I have, too. Sadly, I don’t have old film shots from years ago and somewhere along the way, it seems some digital files have also disappeared. I’m hoping they are on an old external hard drive somewhere.But for today, this is enough.

I present here photos that I like enough to hang on my walls.

Animals

I’m not a nature photographer at all. I respect them, the people willing to stand out in all weather for hours, or days, waiting to get an amazing shot of some animal in the wild. That’s not me. I stick with more domesticated animals, or whatever I can shoot close to home, food, and a bathroom.

Family

I separated the photos in this gallery from the People Gallery, as these give me a special feeling. I haven’t included photos of my entire family,yet, but in here are some photos that I like that I’ve taken over the years. I have many many more to add when I get the time.

Friends

This is a risky gallery, as I don’t want to piss anyone off. But here it is, a gallery of some of my friends that I’ve taken over the years. I have many more to add as time goes on, and I’m sure I’ll be taking many more when our paths cross. “Oh, I'm a lucky man, to count on both hands the ones I love.” ~ Eddie Vedder

Julia

I moved to Germany Halloween of 2020 to be with my love and partner. If you look at the miles of film, and the mountains of pixels, I’ve shot since then, you’ll see Julia is my favorite subject. I think she’s learned to ignore me when I point whatever camera I’m testing at her. But if I’m lucky, she’ll lift her head and show me her magical smile.

Oops

This is fun. I’ve just dumped a bunch of shots that were “mistakes,” but I like them anyway. Maybe they are double exposures, or the first or last shots on a roll, but, for some reason, I like them. I’m not a hoarder. I have a lot of photos that are so bad they can’t even make it into the Oops Gallery. Enjoy.

People

Maybe it’s because of my early years as a photojournalist, but I like my photos unretouched. What you see is what you get. I don’t remove pimples or scars or distractions in the background. I do adjust tonal values of images, and I’ve been known to remove scratches created in the film development process. But the pictures are what the camera captured in a moment in time.

Work

"All work and no play makes jack a dull boy," or so they say. So, I try to work as little as possible. Luckily, when I do work, I enjoy it so much that it's not like work at all.
The line between my work and play gets pretty blurry sometimes. I photograph for fun and I teach photography workflows using the many Adobe tools as part of my job. I enjoy writing and designing things for fun, and I teach the many Adobe tools used for that as part of my job. Yeah, where one ends and the other begins isn't clear.

What is clear is that I have a passion for the work I do, I enjoy it, and people say it shows in my presentations and my final products. To be clear, even though I enjoy my work so much, I'm still going to charge for it.

Welcome to my new site. A special "thank you" to Julia for building it for me. As I started pulling content together for it, I realized I have A LOT of photos and stories and not enough time to put it all on here. So this site, like all of them, I guess, is a work in progress and this is the first phase. If you don't see your picture on here, but think it should be, just wait. I'm sure I'll stumble across it some day and add it on.

Digiversity.tv has been around since 2001, but what you see now is a rebirth. New brand identity, new website, and new videos. In addition to the videos are blog articles and, just for fun, Julia and I do Digiversity.tv LIVE, where we get to share tricks and techniques we use on a regular basis, things we've learned, and introduce you to our friends who come on as guests to share their knowledge.
