A shooting has taken place in an Yekaterinburg shopping centre over a queue for an ATM

One man was injured as a result of the shooting at one of Yekaterinburg’s shopping centres.

As “Interfax” reports, the incident occurred in the morning of the 18th of May at the “Kit” shopping centre, 65 Amundsen street. The reason for the shooting was an argument between a young man and two brothers in a queue for an ATM.

During the argument, the [young man] sprayed pepper spray into the face of one of the brothers and tried to escape to the second floor. There, the second brother caught up with him, at which point the young man drew a PMT traumatic pistol, and opened fire at random. As a result, the second brother received firearms injuries in his cheek and thigh.

The shooter escaped from the scene of the crime, but returned soon after to offer first aid to the victim. There, he was detained by security and the police who had arrived. The wounded man was hospitalised.

The weapon was confiscated from the attacker. It turned out that it was officially registered. The gunman himself is in custody. It is known that he was planning on celebrating his birthday on Saturday.

Law enforcement organisations are deciding whether to press charges under article 111 of the Russian Federation (Grievous Bodily Harm) or under article 213, (Hooliganism).

A job vacancy has appeared for a gondolier in Chelyabinsk

In Chelyabinsk, a job vacancy has opened for a gondolier. This is according to the local information portal “Dostup”. The successful candidate will transport passengers on a gondalier around a pond located 11 kilometres [7 miles] from the town.

The candidate must have a presentable appearance. In addition to this, a good voice is welcome – the gondolier will be required to sing songs in Italian.

The employer promises a complete benefits package, a “two by two” timetable [Note: a shift working pattern of two days of 12 hour shifts, then two days off], and preliminary training in Venice. The gondolier’s salary is not reported. The gondolier will be provided with two sets of uniform, consisting of black trousers, a striped top, and a hat.

The organisers in Chelyabinsk want the employee to steer a gondola – a traditional flat-bottomed Venetian boat weighing about half a ton (the organisers are planning to buy a used one “to convey the spirit of the era”). A gondolier rows with only one oar, in accordance with history, due to the fact that in Venice, which is the home of gondoliers, the canals are too narrow for two oars.

Gondoliers often perform barcaroles, traditional boaters’ songs. Many famous composers, such as Jacques Offenbach and Frederic Chopin wrote barcaroles.

CIA agent arrested in Moscow

Employees of the Federal Security Service [the FSB, formerly the KGB] have arrested a CIA employee, Ryan Christopher Fogle, working under the cover of third secretary of the political department of the US embassy in Russian, RIA Novosti reports.

Fogle was arrested in the night of the 13th to the 14th May by counterintelligence agents of the FSB while he was trying to get a Russian secret service agent to defect. The American was discovered carrying technical equipment, instructions for the defecting Russian, things to change his appearance and a significant amount of money. After the requisite procedures were carried out, Fogle was handed over to representatives of the US embassy in the FSB waiting room. His fate from now on has not been reported, nor has the reaction of the US embassy in Moscow.

The FSB have noticed, according to Interfax, repeated attempts by American intelligence in recent times to recruit employees of the Russian military and secret service, but all attempts have been identified by Russian counterintelligence and were dealt with by the FSB.

The political department of the US embassy, where [Fogle], deals with informing Washington about the foreign and military policy of Russia, and also informs Moscow of the US’s position on foreign policy and security. In addition, according to the American embassy, the department produces analyses of important events in Russia’s internal politics, such as elections, the activities of political parties, human rights issues, and freedom of speech, in the light of how these affect Russo-American relations. The head of the department is Michael Klecheski.

Even a fire could not make Post of Russia’s service worse

A fire that took place today at the international postal exchange “Moscow” located in the Post of Russia building on Warsaw Chaussée will not affect the processing of parcels from overseas. A representative of the postal service made this statement to the “Prime” news agency.

According to him, the fire broke out at around 15:00 Moscow time, and is now completely localised. the reason for the fire, according to preliminary information, was a short circuit. No-one has been injured as a result of this incident.

According to the Headquarters of the Emergencies Ministry, bags of correspondence were burned. The total area of the fire was 10 square metres.

As was reported previously, approximately 500 tonnes of international post, mostly made up of parcels for Russian customers from foreign shops, have accumulated in Moscow’s customs offices and at airports.

At the end of April, press photographer Sergey Ponomarev, working for the New York Times in Afghanistan, reported on his blog that Post of Russia had asked its foreign counterparts not to accept parcels and correspondence headed for our country.

The press photographer began to discover the reason behind the event. “It would appear that Post of Russia sent the postal services of all other countries a request via the embassy not to accept post bound for Russia. Do you remember the backlog of post at Sheremetevo [Airport]? Well, perhaps there’s no backlog any more, but the problem remains”, Ponomarev says.

Internet publications are filled with negative feedback from customers about the work of our postal service. One Ridus reader in particular, reports that he waited two and a half months for a parcel from Britain to Moscow, although it only took one week to arrive in Russia. Another reader’s Christmas card from Paris only arrived at the end of March.

Recently, the management of Post of Russia was changed, Dmitry Strashnov, former head of the Tele2 Russia mobile phone operator, took Aleksandr Kiselyov’s place. On the 19th April, Kiselyov was summoned to the Ministry of Communications and was officially fired. The change in the director of the company does not so far appear to have had any affect on the quality of service.
