Heavily corroded underneath, inspectors said that the bridge is not safe anymore for use. The director of Montpelier Public Works, Todd Law, blamed the severe rust problem to salt use and leaching from the pressure-treated lumber. Though made of weathering steel, the supposed to be rust barrier to protect the bridge from corrosion failed.

Connecting Route 2 with the State Street, the pedestrian bridge is a popular and functional structure in Montpelier. Hence, the city is working on getting it fixed. Noticing that rust is eating it away several years ago, an amount of $97 000 had been set aside for its repair. However, with now realized severity of the problem, the money needed is expected to be more than what has been prepared.

======================

The city closed the pedestrian bridge that connects Route 2 with State Street over the Winooski River, saying it is no longer safe for people to walk on.

“I wouldn’t say the bridge would collapse, but portions possibly,” said Todd Law, the director of Montpelier Public Works.

The bridge is so corroded underneath that holes are popping through. The bridge was built in 1998 at a cost of a quarter of a million dollars. It was expected to last 30 to 40 years. Now, it needs a major makeover.

“The bridge is made of a weathering steel, so it’s supposed to form a rust barrier around the members that protect it from further corrosion. It didn’t seem to protect it.” Law said.

Rust weakens metal. That is the reason why untreated rust can make metal structures like bridges and railings unsafe. In fact, even just a small corrosion in metal tools and equipments can already make unsafe for use.

And so, no matter how small it is, rust formation must be immediately treated. However, you should make sure that your rust removal process is not only effective but also safe. And to do that, you will need to have a green rust removal product.

Among all those rust sprays in the market today, the best that you can get is Rusterizer. With its 100 percent green ingredients, it can deliver an effective rust treatment all while saving you from any chemical-related illnesses. And as an added benefit, you can use it to clear rust stains apart from treating rust itself.

Keep your home rust-free. Always have a green rust removal product ready.

They say that the vehicles are with rust-related problems. This spurred the road safety agency to conduct separate investigations on the vehicles.

Based on the report, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s first investigation involves the 17, 000 2003 Chevrolet Express vans of the General Motors. The neck fillers are rusted, said the complainants, allowing gasoline to leak out. Investigation about the vehicles started after five owners complained about it.

Meanwhile, the second investigation is about Ford’s 63 000 2004 Freestar and Mercury Monterey minivans. The agency received seven complaints against the vehicles. The owners said that the rear-wheel wells rusted. They added, in some other cases, because of the rust the third-row seat belts completely separated from the vehicle.

========================

Owners complaining of what they saw as rust-related safety problems have prompted the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to open separate investigations into vans made by General Motors and Ford.

The first investigation involves about 17,000 2003 Chevrolet Express vans with a door behind the driver’s side, which is not the normal configuration. Typically those vans have a side door behind the front passenger.

On the vans being investigated, the fuel-filler pipe is routed differently, going through the rear wheel well, which the agency said apparently exposed it to road debris and spray.

The agency said it began its inquiry after receiving five complaints from owners in salt-belt states who said the filler neck rusted, allowing gasoline to leak. There were no reports of fires or accidents.

Cars are very prone to rusting. However, they are not the only things that corrosion can ruin. Almost every metal item, rust can damage. Even concrete and other-materials-made pieces and surfaces, it can negatively.

Hence, it’s prudent to always have a rust remover around. The product will allow you to implement an immediate rust removal process whenever needed. Of all the rust solutions though, Rusterizer is the best rust removal spray to purchase. Made of 100 percent organic ingredients, it promises a process that’s both safe and effective.

If you have on old house and having problems with water pressure, it may be more than a faulty shower head. But it doesn’t hurt to rule out the simple things before moving onto more complex ones. It can be a matter of life and death to get the right pipes when you’re working in the house. Some people have made the mistake of thinking their natural gas lines are water lines.

Ductile iron, vinyl and reinforced concrete represent the bulk of pipelines currently being used in the U.S. and Canada to deliver safe drinking water. However, cast iron and ductile iron distribution pipes are the most susceptible to corrosion and breakage. In fact, each year, thousands of water lines are removed for replacement — most suffering from severe deterioration caused by corrosion.

Changes in soil texture, temperature, moisture, oxygen, chemical make-up, organic material and bacteria are common factors that can contribute to corrosion and eventually cause pipe failure. Drought periods followed by heavy rain can cause ground conditions to become unstable, causing corrosion-embrittled pipelines to fracture and break. This can ultimately lead to severe water leakage. The resulting effects include street cave-ins, sinkholes and potholes — not to mention wasted water.

The nation’s water and sewer systems are old and in dire need of repair and replacement. At a recent Senate hearing it was estimated that 25 percent of drinking water leaks out from pipes on its way to homes and offices, The Washington Post reported. For example, in the nation’s capital, the average water pipe is 77 years old and some date to the 1800s, the Post reported. The needed repairs are estimated to run to $335 billion for the water systems and $300 billion for sewers.

A study by the American Society of Civil Engineers found that $9.4 billion per year in additional funding is needed for water and sewer work between now and 2020. About 1.7 trillion gallons of water leaks unused from pipes each year and some 900 billion gallons of untreated sewage ends up in waterways, according to the Post.

“All the big cities have these problems, and to me it’s the unseen catastrophe,” George Hawkins, general manager of the District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority, told the Post. “My humble view is that the industry we’re in is the bedrock of civilization because it’s not just an infrastructure that is a convenience that allows you to get to work faster or slower. At least with bridges or a road, people have some idea of what it is because they drive on them and see them

Read more about Sewer Systems in Dire Need of Repair, Engineers Say at: Newsmax.com

If your home or building has rusty pipes that are discoloring your water, you should consult an experienced, licensed plumber. Amazingly enough, water that’s discolored by rust is not a health hazard, although it does indicate that your pipes are corroding and need repaired or replaced.

In the public sewage system, the cause of the clog could be any kind of obstruction from rust to plastic to deposits of silt and sand. There are numerous dangers of clogged pipes, especially if the pipes become badly clogged. Clogged public sewage pipes can become a breeding ground for a wide variety of waterborne diseases. When pipes that drain water out from the sewage system of a municipality or other large areas get clogged, the water becomes stagnant. It can obstruct the flow of all kinds of wastes that should normally flow out of the drainage clearing system, leading to the growth of numerous bacteria that can also contribute to infection and disease

Keep in mind you probably will not want to drink that looks funny in color even if it is not a hazard to your health. It may be easy to determine if the rust is from your home or from the water treatment plant. Even though it is stated to not be hazardous to your health it may be important to know if drinking too much of this funny looking water would make you sick or lead to health problems.

Call a plumber and get an accurate diagnosis and rust remover product before moving forward with your rust removal problems at home!

Corrosion is the gradual wearing away of a material by its environment. Dissimilar metal contact, oxygen, water, and debris can all generate pipeline corrosion. Left untreated, rusty pipes will lead to a variety of expensive plumbing problems such as burst pipes, slab leaks, and clogged drains. With the yearly cost of corrosion approximated at over $276 billion – no wonder Americans spend millions of dollars on pipe corrosion repair in their homes and businesses.

By understanding the basic facts of residential plumbing pipeline corrosion, you can control or prevent this destructive force to save money and maintain a hazard free living environment for your family.

Walking up the Lawrence County Courthouse steps on Monday, employees found water spilling out from under the front doors. ”It was just pouring out of here like you were pouring it out of a bucket,” described employee Bill Rickman. On the inside, everything was left soaking wet, after a pipe on the second floor broke open.

Immediately crews began cleaning up, and they say most of the damage done was to the ceilings and floors in the Property Valuation Office, and the County Clerk’s office below. ”We had a copier that had a little water damage,” said Jobe, who added that none of the city records or paper documents were seriously damaged. This isn’t the first time a pipe has busted in the courthouse. In the late 90s, the water pipes busted in the same area. ”Just have to hope for the best and hope it doesn’t happen again,” said Jobe.

For now, the courthouse will be closed until the building is dry and clean, which means anyone with unfinished business at the courthouse will be given a grace period until the building reopens. The insurance company is expected to evaluate the damage, today.

Rusty pipes can mean bigger problems than simply having rust on the pipes, so you might want to get your plumbing checked out if you think there is a problem. But if you simply need to remove rust from the pipes, several household items or several rust removers can help do the trick. One thing to remember is if the pipes are accessible to your family, you might want to use a household product instead of the rust removers, which are usually toxic. But if your pipes are in discreet, never-trafficked parts of the house, rust removers are acceptable.

Plumbers advise homeowners to conduct periodical inspections of exposed copper piping for bluish-green stains that in many cases indicate pinhole leaks. If spotted, homeowners and tenants need to call their local plumbers for effective treatment. Installing pipe clamps over pinholes will stop water escape and damage control the leaking pipe emergency until professional repair is made.

Only use rust removers if the rusty areas are not accessible to your family. If the pipes are behind walls or on the ceiling in an attic or basement, rust remover can be used.

Over a period of time tombstones will accumulate a layer of deposits resulting from hard water, dust, dirt, or lichens, mold and fungus that usually grow on a porous stone.

Due to the different types of materials used as a tombstones, it is first important to understand how each material needs to be cleaned. Rust is like a supervillain of stains. It’s ugly, it often seems to appear out of thin air, and it’s tough. In fact, it’s one of the few stains that can’t, in a pinch, be erased with chlorine bleach which actually makes rust stains worse. So this is one of those times when being considerate of the environment pays off immediately.

In addition to natural stone, bronze has been gaining in popularity with modern day memorial parks as a choice for tombstones. Many of today’s cemeteries are moving toward an all bronze memorial park since they make the grounds easier to maintain.

Natural stone throughout history has been the top choice for cemetery tombstones. Among the most common types of stone used as tombstones are sandstone, limestone, marble and granite.

At one of Minnesota’s oldest cemeteries, rust never sleeps. Gravestones, signs and even tree trunks are stained with rust at Calvary Cemetery in Anoka. Once-white marble tombstones have been discolored by a sprinkling system that sprays mineral-rich well water over the grounds — and over nearly everything else.

The rust has visitor Ken Stack seeing red. ”After we talked about the problem last year, I thought perhaps there might be some effort to clean the stones and fix or stop using the well,” said Stack, who first noticed the problem two years ago and has about a dozen relatives buried there. “Instead, they ran the water last summer as if there were no problem. Now the headstones and footstones are much worse. The trees are even stained red, as well as the asphalt pavement running through the cemetery.”

The Church of St. Stephen, which owns the cemetery, is aware of one or two other complaints about the rust-colored coating on the tombstones, said administrator Jay Gish, who recently discussed the matter with Stack. ”The place looked bad,” Gish said. “We didn’t know this would happen. It’s super-important for us to take care of this.”

Before cleaning a tombstone you must first get permission from the lot owner or next of kin, that is if you are not a relative of the person interred. Also tombstones that are to be cleaned need to be evaluated to make certain they are in stable condition with no flaking or risk of further deterioration from the cleaning process.

When cleaning granite tombstones it is best to follow the same prescription for cleaning limestone, sandstone or marble tombstones. Additionally, due to granite’s durability, it is all right to use a more aggressive scrubbing technique. You can also use a pressure washer on granite tombstones as long as it is in stable condition and reveals no fracturing or cracks.
