Haste the Day’s Final Appearance

Tonight Haste the Day will make their final appearance in Colorado. On November 22, 2010, HTD announced that they would be disbanding after their final tour. After stopping in Colorado on Warped Tour in July, and the Black Sheep in August, their final Colorado show will be tonight at the Marquis Theater. Other bands who will be playing are Anchorage, A Plea for Purging, and Mychildren Mybride. Tickets are still available.

One of the most exciting games was played on Sunday. That’s right, the NHL all star game. But what many didn’t know about was the skills competition on Saturday. A new NHL record was set in the hardest shot competition. Zdeno Chara improved on his own record by taking a 105.9 mph slap shot. Other winners were Michael Grabner in the fastest skater, Alex Ovechkin in the breakaway competition, and Daniel Sedin for the most accurate shooter.

Last night the Mustangs football team overcame the Pomona Panthers 20-23 despite being down 12-0 after the first quarter.

Late in the second quarter Reilly Hauptman came up with a 50 yard run to score first for the Mustangs.

“In the first half we didn’t have any breaks or any field position,” said coach Loyd. “But during halftime I told them we’re only down by five, let’s just get control of it.”

Later in the 4^th quarter, Jakob Buys coverted on a 64 yard run to give the Mustangs the lead. Shortly after the Mustangs special teams came up with a blocked punt on the 15 yard line. Jeff Grenfell made a one yard touchdown run, and his brother Chad kicked the extra point to make the score 20-12.

However, the Panthers did not give up easily. They responded with a 25 yard pass reception, and a two point conversion to tie the game up, late in the fourth quarter. But, with 6.9 seconds left in the game, Chad Grenfell saved the day with a 23 yard field goal to make the final score 23-20.

“It’s a good excitement, we won league today and that’s big for our school. [It’s] our first year in 5A, so were taking it to them.” Jeff Grenfell said after the game. “This may even feel better than the A-West win because it meant something more.”

Trapped Miners Finally Rescused After 69 Days

After spending 69 days in the depths of a collapsed mine, all 33 miners were successfully rescued on October 13th, having been trapped since August 5th, when the mine first collapsed.

After August 5th, 17 days past before it was realized that the miners were still alive, due to the 7 inch hole discovered through which food, water, letters from family and friends, hydration gels, soccer videos, and even bibles were passed.

For the other 52 days, rescuers spent their time building the shaft intended to rescue each miner. The shaft was barely wider than a person’s shoulder width, held one person at a time, and the journey to the surface was about 15 minutes. One by one, the miners each were brought back to the real world and were reunited with their families and friends. They were made to wear special sunglasses to prevent damage the sudden brightness might cause their eyes after spending so long in a dark tunnel. As they fell to the ground, a few prayed, and one professional soccer player was tossed a ball and he juggled it for a while; his first pleasure of being given back his life. Others hugged their loved ones for a long time, crying in gratitude. The Chilean President Sebastian Pinera was at the mouth of the hole, waiting to hug each man as he surfaced.

The rest of the world has seen this remarkable save as inspiration, and Chilean Pinera voiced his agreement.

“We have lived a magical night, a night we will remember throughout our lives, a night in which life defeated death,” Pinera said.

A-West Whiffs Against The Mustangs

“This is our house!” the fans cheered in the gym of Arvada West as the Mustangs Volleyball team shut out the Wildcats.

In the first game, the girls beat A-West 25-17. Soon after, 25-13, and the final game 25-21.

Coming into the game the Mustangs were ranked second, and on a six game winning streak.

Jordan Banich leads the team with 158 kills and an average of four per game.

The Mustangs have only one game left against Brighton, who is ranked number 4 in the state. Hopefully they can bring out the same energy.

Rockies Fail To Make the Playoffs

With the 9-7 loss last night, the Colorado Rockies are officially out of the race for the playoffs. The Rockies have now lost eight of their last nine games, important games that were a must win. Troy Tulowitzki threw his helmet and broke his bat over home plate in disgust after he struck out swinging in the bottom of the ninth.

“It’s been a tough stretch,” Todd Helton said. “Just a tough go.”

But do not be discouraged, there is always next season, and in the meantime watch the Avalanche.

4th Straight #1 Album

Well they’ve done it again, for the fourth time. The legendary Heavy Rock band Disturbed’s new album, Asylum debuts at number one atop the Billboard 200 with an estimate of 179,000 records sold. Next to it is the Now 35 compilation, at No. 2 with 105,000 units bought. Eminem’s Recovery maintains its spot at No. 3 with 93,000. This is the fourth consecutive time that the band’s album has made #1. The last three albums that made number one are Indestructible in 2008, Ten Thousand Fists in 2005, and Believe in 2002. From which only two other bands have accomplished: Metallica and the Dave Matthews band.

Staying Cool in the Summer

With the arrival of summer, comes the freedom from school.
Students are all ready for summer break. Many will go on vacation, hang out with friends, and some will continue sports throughout the summer vacation.
The Boulder Valley Summer Swim League provides a chance for anyone between 5 and 18 to compete, make friends, and have a good time. The closest team to Ralston Valley High School in this league is Meadowglenn Swim Team.
Based on age, the swimmers practice for one hour at 7, 8, or 9 a.m. Monday through Friday at Meadowglenn Swimming Pool. The swim team is a great way to stay active, meet new people, try something new, and gain experiences. It is a fun way to spend the summer, the team gets to be very close through the short summer break.

Making the Dream Come Real

On Friday, May 21st and Monday, May 24th the sixth graders of Van Arsdale Elementary School finally got to show the result of their time and effort to friends and family. The sixth grade students were able to dedicate their after school time to taking part in the Shakespearean play, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. Many of the students have worked on the play since September. They have spent numerous hours at the school working to make the play entertaining for all audience members.
The Van Arsdale students kept the play along the lines of Shakespeare’s written play, but there was also new music added in. The play was high-energized and kept all audience member’s entertained. The sixth grade students did a wonderful job. It was obvious that they worked hard and enjoyed what they were doing.

Bird Declared EXTINCT

The Alaotra Grebe (Tachybaptus rufolavatus), also known as Delacour’s Little Grebe or Rusty Grebe, was a grebe endemic to Lake Alaotra and surrounding lakes in Madagascar. The last sighting (which may have been a hybrid with the Little Grebe) was in 1985 and the species was declared extinct in 2010.

The species was officially declared extinct in 2010, 25 years after the last confirmed sighting. Although some species have been classified as extinct and later have been found to still exist, Leon Bennun, the director of the conservation organization BirdLife International has stated that “no hope remains for this species” and blames the “unforeseen consequences” of human action.

This extinction brings the number of confirmed bird extinctions since 1600 to 162. Additionally, one bird species in eight is believed to be “threatened”, a total of 1,240 species. The previous confirmed extinction of a bird species was of the Liverpool Pigeon (Caloenas maculata) in 2008.
