This doesn't sound like Google trying to compete with Facebook or Twitter. This sounds like Google trying to be a better Google.

Google has always been about filtering the signal from the noise in their search results, giving you the most relevant links to what you're searching for. As the web has evolved, there is more noise, and weaker signals.

Hard links between web pages are not the only way that relevancy can be determined on today's web. There are also "soft links" -- social links, geographical links, and other ways in which information connects. Google is trying to filter this real-world communication in the same way they filter web pages.

Sounds brilliant.

I've had a demo of a couple versions of Green Goose from Brian, and I have been continually impressed with both the product and his approach.

I know the non-techies in my household and broader community would be attracted to Green Goose big time. I can also see small businesses (like coffee shops) buying these as part of greening their work environment, which is a huge trend. The price point is in the right range for both those groups, and the look and feel of Green Goose is superior to similar tools for getting data on your energy use.
Dave Nattriss said:

It seemed to me the vast majority of people who have access to Google Wave so far are not developers and are in fact Twitter addicts who just jumped on the bandwagon.

Google gave out access to Wave to encourage developers to write cool extensions for it, not for mainstream non-technical users to play with. Anyone who doesn't 'get' it or is 'overwhelmed' by having four panes on a page with rich text multi-threaded conversation on one of them, is clearly not who they wanted to try it out at this stage.

The whole reason the product got hyped by techies was because of the potential of the underlying federated wave protocol using XMPP, not the user interface on the front end.

"At launch time, anyone using the service could add any other user to a wave - even if that other user had no interest in participating. This led to an inbox filled with waves, only some of which may have been relevant or interesting" - that would only happen if people knew of your Wave account and added you - i.e. your 'friends' (contacts) aren't really to be trusted.

" In addition, communicating in real-time, while nice for IM, may not be as productive when attempting to share the sort of longer thoughts and instructions typically sent out via email." - sure, but it's not hard to just be patient and do something else while someone else in the Wave is typing away, is it? Again, it seems like the people testing/criticising the service are not really who it is intended for.

Anyway, this move to integrate it into Google Apps seems a great idea - the people who are using Google's services for work are the just the kind of people that will be able to make use of private (not public) Waving for their projects.
Don't forget that Wave was designed as a replacement for e-mail, which is a closed/private messaging system. The public functions of Wave are still very experimental. Closed waves with just people you know, be it friends/family planning a social event, or colleagues working on a project, are far more successful and useful. As a developer, I'd be very happy to to use Wave to work on a new project with a client if they had access to it too - it's much simpler than using a wiki or Basecamp where you potentially overwrite each others changes.

@Maria: You're mistaken. There is no invasion of privacy here. As the article says, Warden is crawling PUBLIC Facebook pages. As for the value of the research, if you don't see value in understanding the behavior of 400MM people, I can't help you. Last but not least, if you are so worried about your "God given freedom", don't splatter your personal info all across the web.

@Bruce Wayne: Not sure a structured data approach would ever work for such inherently unruly data. I think you'd give up as much or more than you'd gain by doing that. A better approach, IMO, is to use Networks Theory and statistical analysis to identify likely trends etc. Better to be approximately right than exactly wrong...
