I know this site has become dilapidated.

I already have a new design 90% done & coded. Still trying to decide on a back-end. Keep Wordpress, Tumblr, Posterous, custom Rails app, wait for Harmony CMS beta? I promise I will decide soon, I don’t know how much longer I can look at this stale loaf.

We’re Moving!

Yes, that’s right. Marianne and I (Bruno too) are moving out of Cincinnati to New York City! Marianne recently accepted a new position and account with her current agency, Momentum Worldwide, operating out of their NYC office in Soho. This was an opportunity we could not pass up, as we both have always had aspirations of moving out of Cincy to a big city. Great news for me is that my current employer, Barefoot, was more than happy to keep me on board, so I will continue to work for them remotely from New York.

The plan is for the move to take place in June, pending the sale of both of our houses. (Drop me a line if you know anyone looking in the Oakley/Hyde Park area) At this point, we have no clue where we’ll live in New York. Definitely somewhere South of Midtown, or possibly Brooklyn, and not New Jersey. If you have any opinions or insight of where to live please let me know.

These next couple months are going to be insane, but will all be worth it once we are settled in the Big Apple and get to continue on with this exciting new chapter of our lives.

Clean & Pretty flash[:notice] and flash[:error] in Rails

I’ve been using this little snippet quite often for our Rails applications, so I thought I’d share it. It uses minimal code to output the flash[:notice] and flash[:error] messages in colors correlating to their purpose and then fades them away.

Here’s the CSS used followed by the Erb code I use in my layout:

My Birthday & Prohibition In The News

Last Friday a bunch of friends and I were out celebrating my birthday at the historical Grammer’s in Over The Rhine. Grammer’s was having a celebration of the 75th aniversary of the Repeal of Prohibition that night which coincidentally shares the date of December 5th with me. We’ve got several photos taken of us that are in a gallery on Metromix-Cincinnati. Don’t ask me why I always have ridiculous looks on my face in pictures, I can’t help it.

Spring Shit Show ‘08 Video

I put together a video of pics from the pub crawl I planned this past Spring. This was the first time I’ve used iMovie to create anything. It is a very intuitive and easy to use application, I would definitely recommend it to any novice producers out there. There are definitely some limitations that I felt using iMovie, so I’m going to give Final Cut Express a go for my next production. I’ve been looking around for a hand held video recorder and am thinking about picking up a Flip Mino. I’d love to get something that records HD, but that just isn’t in the budget right now.

W3C HTML/XHTML Validator Standalone App for Mac OS X

Found this slick little app for validations, Validator S.A.C. I generally would use the one built into FireFox’s Web Developer toolbar or FireBug, but they don’t work for websites running locally. To validate local sites, I would have to go to W3C’s validation website and copy n’ paste my local code. Now I can open this little app with a quick Spotlight keystoke and drag n’ drop files directly on it to validate. They can even be dragged directly from my TextMate sidebar. Cheers to Chuck Houpt!

A List Apart’s now annual, Survey For People Who Make Websites is now out. If you’re one of those people that has any hand in the process of building a site, please take it. The results of their inaugural survey last year were very interesting and I am looking forward to seeing this year’s.

Wordpress iPhone App

The free Wordpress iPhone application is now out, and I am posting this from it right now. Looks like a pretty simple and intuitive interface. The only thing I don’t see here that I would like is an easier way to format the copy. Writing out the HTML by hand on this keyboard is quite a chore. It does make adding photos a snap though. Below is a screenshot of me drafting this post that I have attached.

Update: Looks like some things still need to be worked out with it. I’m not sure if it is an issue with the app or my server, but the image hasn’t posted properly.

Update2: Definitely a setting on my end. Should be smooth sailing from here on out

Google’s Web Development Encyclopedia

Google just introduced Doctype, a new wiki-style encyclopedia by web developers, for web developers. Looks to be a valuable resource, and has been added to my personal bookmarks. I especially like that they list browser compatibility for all of the CSS properties.
