Since I often screen share into my iMac or mini while on the go, I wanted a way to simplify the connection process. I ended up with the solution you see above. Clicking either of the icons will fire up the screen sharing app and connect me to whichever computer I selected. It’s also pretty simple to re-create for yourself!

Assuming you already have DynDNS or something similar set up to let you access your computer while on the go, all you’ll need to do is open up Safari and type vnc://yourdomain.here, then click on the globe in the address bar and drag it to your desktop. Double clicking on this icon will now take you directly to screen sharing. Now, all you’ll have to do is find replacement icons of your choice and add them to a stack. Voila!

I finally received my Speck PixelSkin HD, and my first impressions of it are pretty good. The case doesn’t add too much bulk to the phone, but still provides ample protection. It is made of a slightly flexible plastic with a matte finish on the sides. As far as button coverage, the sleep/wake and volume buttons are completely covered while the ringer switch is exposed (to be expected). The opening for the headphone jack seems to be on the small side, but the dock connector seems open enough to support most chargers.

The app works very well over 3G, providing great quality with very few stops for buffering. Purely in the interest of science, I turned off Wi-Fi to see how much data was required to stream a 43-minute episode of LOST. Turns out, it uses almost 200MB.

…we both recognize that wireless broadband is different from the traditional wireline world, in part because the mobile marketplace is more competitive and changing rapidly. In recognition of the still-nascent nature of the wireless broadband marketplace, under this proposal we would not now apply most of the wireline principles to wireless, except for the transparency requirement.

I’m not sure that I agree that wireless broadband is any different from wired broadband. Keeping the two separate will only lead to more deals like Skype for Android only on Verizon. So much for “open”.

I just finished the first episode of The Talk Show yesterday, which features John Gruber of Daring Fireball as a co-host. If you’re into technology and the web, I definitely recommend that you check out what 5by5.tv has to offer.

I’ve always been a fan of multi-monitor setups, especially for any type of graphic design or photo editing. Being able to maximize screen real estate is a must. So, when I heard about Air Display (link opens iTunes) for the iPad, I had to check it out. Air Display was developed by Avatron Software, makers of the popular Air Sharing app for iPhone and iPad. For $9.99, this neat little utility allows you to utilize your iPad’s (relatively) spacious 1024×768 display as an additional display for your computer. The setup process is painless: launch the app on the iPad, flip a switch on the companion app on your Mac and away you go. The iPad shows up in the standard display preference pane, so you are able to position it any way you’d like. You can even use the iPad’s touchscreen to control the mouse.

Thus far, I’ve been using the extra space to store my iChat buddy list and chat sessions, as well as toolbars for image editing applications like Pixelmator. There is a noticeable lag when dragging windows over to the iPad’s screen and animations are a bit jerky, but for mostly static content, Air Display is more than usable.

Since my iPad sits in a BookArc stand next to my iMac when it’s charging, Air Display is a perfect use of the device’s IPS display.

If you’ve got an iPad, a Mac, and you’re in the market for an additional display, $10 is a hard deal to beat.
