“It’s tough out there” has become the new mantra in a world filled with excuses.

So it was nice to see an entrepreneur think differently, take a chance and build continuity into a “regular” business.

Jerry Remy is a former Boston Red Sox player and current TV color commentator. He is opening a new restaurant called, appropriately enough, Jerry Remy’s Sports Bar & Grill.

But here’s where Jerry is different from fellow restaurateurs with a brilliant move…

He knows how crowded the restaurant will get during a Red Sox game so he created his own version of an “Inner Circle”. He calls it a “Season Pass” and for $500, you can skip the line on game day, get a guaranteed table, a $25 food credit, a free beer along with invites to exclusive events (valued up to $3,000).

And so far he has almost 200 people signed up.

That’s close to $100,000 in revenue BEFORE he even opens the restaurant.

Friggen brilliant.

But, of course, out come all the negative people in droves.

First, you’ve got a Boston University professor Chris Cakebread who calls the offer “just a little over the top”.

Then, watch out for the bloggers. WalletPop goes on the attack. They even interview a NY bartender who offers his well-thought input “We don’t gouge our people. That is the height of alienation.”.

Wrong, wrong, wrong.

Hey, if people want to spend $500 to cut the line and all the perks that come with membership, good for them. It’s called smart business.

CHOICES ARE GOOD!

It’s a free country and you certainly can eat anywhere you desire. Boston is a big city with lots of options to chow down. You can wait on line like you would normally do or you can pay and get the VIP treatment. It’s a CHOICE. And where I come from, choices are GOOD!

When you give people choices, there’s always a percentage who want the “best”. And by not offering it, Jerry Remy wouldn’t have that extra $100,000. Cash flow is everything in the restaurant business and by getting that money upfront, it gives Jerry a much better chance to keep his doors open. That means more jobs, more commerce and a BETTER economy.  Otherwise, he’s open his restaurant even more in the hole and really have to fight to get profitable. And if he did go out of business, then everyone would say he was crazy for opening a restaurant during these “tough times”.

There’s only one bit of advice I’d offer Jerry. I’d go one further.

Why not offer a “Diamond Season Pass”.

Limit it to 5 , 10 or maybe 20 people.

Charge $5,000 and give them more access to Jerry and other former Red Sox players. Plus give them bigger perks like the best seat in the house that has a velvet rope around it. Plus free drinks and some autographed memorabilia. I guarantee there are people who would jump at that package.

We should all celebrate a smart entrepreneur who is offering more choices and will position himself to stay in business.
