10 Benefits of PMI Membership

People often question the value of Project Management Institute (PMI) membership and ask whether it's really worth the money. PMI membership costs $119 per year. I think that most people aren't aware of the benefits that PMI membership offers. Therefore, I decided to address this matter based on my experience. Here's an independent take on the benefits of PMI membership.

1. Save on Certification Exam Cost

I joined PMI for the first time 'before' I signed up for the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam because it helped me save on the exam cost. Do you know that PMI Membership plus PMP certification exam fee for members is less than just PMP exam fee for non-members. Here's how:

PMI Membership = $129 (including $10 application fee)

PMP Exam Fee for members = $405

Total cost for Membership and Exam = $534 (Member cost)
PMP Exam Fee for Non-members = $555 (Non-member cost)

Even including the membership fee, you save $21 overall. So, joining PMI before signing up for the exam, is a no-brainer.

2. Free Online Acess to Project Management Books

As PMI member, you get free (online) access to over 250 Project Mngt books with free membership to books24x7. I found some of the books very useful for my preparation. But to be honest with you, I haven't been using them much after passing my exam.

3. Access to Specific Interest Groups (SIGs)

You can join PMI Specific Interest Groups (SIGs) depending upon your area of expertise and interest. There's a $15 or $20 fee for each SIG membership. Many of these SIGs conduct free webinars for their members that can be used to earn PDUs for PMP Re-certification.

4. Benefit from your Local PM Community

Once you are a PMI member, you can further sign-up for your local PMI chapter. Local PMI chapters provide a good platform for learning from experts, information exchange with peers, and professional networking.

For PMP aspirants, local chapters conduct PMP Exam Prep workshops. Chapter members get discounts on these workshops. Usually, the discounts are more than the chapter fee itself.

For PMPs, the local chapters are even more useful. Under PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements, every PMP needs 60 PDUs every 3 years in order to renew his/her PMP certification. These local chapters conduct Professional Development Events (seminars) and Focus Group Meetings. Each of these events fetch 2 PDUs on average. You can also take up roles in the local Chapter committees to further enhance your leadership and communication skills (and also gain additional PDUs in the process).

I'm based in Singapore and I joined the Singapore PMI Chapter "after" I achieved my PMP certification. Here in Singapore, we have more than 20 professional events a year. The catch is that you cannot join a local chapter unless you are PMI member. The events of the local PMI Chapter were my main reason to renew PMI membership after the first year.

PMI Announces Release Date for New PMP Examination

The content outlined below is a summary of the latest communications RMC has received from PMI®, along with additional information from RMC.

Whenever possible RMC attempts to keep its customers abreast of the latest changes, developments and announcements regarding the PMP® certification. The following information pertains specifically to the NEW PMP® exam—the one that will be rolled out by PMI on June 30^th of 2009. This announcement covers four (4) specific areas:

The New Exam Release Date
Differences Between the 3rd and 4th Edition PMBOK® Guides
Changes in Eligibility Criteria and Passing Score

The New Exam Release Date

As announced at PMI Global Congress North America in mid-October, a new version of the PMP® exam will be placed into worldwide use for any and all PMI® credential examinations taken on or after June 30^th of 2009. This exam will be based on information contained in the new PMBOK® Guide—Fourth Edition, scheduled to be released in December of 2008.

Differences Between 3^rd and 4^th Edition PMBOK® Guides

Per The Project Management Institute, the upcoming Fourth Edition of the PMBOK® Guide will reflect a focus on improved consistency and clarity. Great consideration was given to remove redundant information and add clarifying statements where needed. Significant improvements were made to improve readability, and terminology was updated only to present them consistently in a verb-noun format.

In an email to RMC dated September 16, 2008, PMI® outlined the major differences between the Third Edition and the Fourth Edition are summarized as follows:

All process names are now in a verb-noun format
Efforts were made to distinguish between Enterprise Environmental Factors and Organizational Process Assets.
A standard approach for discussing requested changes, preventive actions, corrective actions and defect repairs was employed.
The processes decreased from 44 to 42. Two processes were deleted, two processes were added and 6 processes were reconfigured into 4 processes in the Procurement knowledge area.
To provide clarity, a distinction was made between the Project Management Plan and project documents used to manage the project.
The distinction between the information in the Project Charter and the Project Scope Statement was clarified.
The process flow diagrams at the beginning of chapters 4-12 have been deleted and replaced with data flow diagrams.
A data flow diagram for each process has been created to show where information comes from as an input and where it goes to as an output.
A new appendix was added that addresses key interpersonal skills that a project manager utilizes when managing a project.

PMI® also noted that a complete list of changes will be found in Appendix A of the new PMBOK® Guide—Fourth Edition.

Changes to the Eligibility Criteria and Passing Score

Unlike the previous exam change cycle, it appears there will be no changes to the eligibility criteria, the application process or the passing score for the PMP® examination. Memorizing I/Ps, Tools and O/Ps (not from Process level)

You should try to memorize it at artifact level, instead of process level. Meaning you should know everything that happens with Project Charter, WBS, Contract and so on. If you remember this then you will be able to answer many questions in exams.

Project Charter is input for only following:

Preliminary Scope Statement
Scope Planning
Scope Definition.

Resource Calendars - There may be questions in exam asking you about resource calendar. You should remember that it is
- Input for Activity Duration Estimates, Schedule Development and Cost Budgeting
- Activity Resrouce Estimates have Resource calendars as outputs.
Project Calendar: Talking about calendars, remember that project calendar is updated in Schedule Development.
Scope Statement - is input to all the planning processes after its created except
- Activity Resources Estimating
- HR Planning
- Risk Resonse Planning
- Plan Contracting

remember that Scope Statement is updated in Integrated Change control process, Create WBS and Scope control

WBS and WBS dictionary are inputs to
- Scope control
- Activity Definition
- Cost Estimating
- Cost Budgetting
- Plan Purchases and Acquisitions

Remember that Scope Verification only has WBS Dictionary as input not WBS.

All Monitoring and Control Processes Except ( Integration Management & Manage Stakeholders ) will have following 4 outputs:

Recommeded Corrective Actions
Project Management plan ( Updates) ( Except in Performance Reporting )
Organizational Process Assets ( Updates)

PAW - Scope control, Cost Control, Risk Monitoring and control and Contract Administration processes have PAW in Inputs :) . PAW stands for Performance Reporting, Approved change requests and Work Performance Information. The other M & C Processes have two of PAW inputs except ( Integration Management & Manage Stakeholders )
- You can remember this as SCRC has PAW

Recommeded Preventive Actions: This occurs in only 4 processes - Monitor and Control Project work, Risk Monitoring and Control, Quality control and Manage project team.
Recommeded Defect Repair is output of only two processes
- M & C project work
- Quality Control

Cost of Quality - Input to Quality Planning and TT For Cost Estimating.
Forecasting
- Forecasts are outputs of M & C project work and Performance Reporting
- Forecasted completion is output of Cost control and input to Performance Reporting
- Forecasting is TT for Cost Control
Five outputs of Direct and Manage Project Execution are inputs to Quality Assurance namely
- Implemented Change requests,
- Implemented Corrective actions
- Implemented Preventive actions
- Implemented Defect Repair.
- Work Performance Information.
Contract which is output of Select Selles process is input to Contract Administration and Cost budgeting

Memorizing Inputs, Tools and Outputs

Integration:
- Tools and Techniques are same for all the processes, except Develop Project charter has "Project Selection Methods" and Monitoring and Control project work has "Earned value technique".
- Remember there is no Expert Judgement in Direct and Execute project Work.
Scope:
- Scope Definition TT is APES ( Alternatives Identificaiton, Product Analysis, Expert Judgement and Stakeholder Analysis )
- Scope Verification has only one TT which is Inspection. The only other place where you will find Inspection as TT is in Quality Control process.
Time:
- Activity Attributes is updated in all the process except in Activity Definition where it is created.
- Memorize TT for Schedule Development
- Activity Definition TT are PERTD ( Planning component, Expert Judgement, Rolling wave planning, Templates, Decomposition )
- Schedule Control TT are PS PS PV ( Progress reporting Schedule Change control System, Performance Measurement,Schedule comparision Bar charts, PM software Variance analysis )

Cost:
- Memorize TT For Cost Estimating. Remember that this overlaps with Activity Duration Estimate process.
- Cost budgeting has Funding Limit Reconcilation as TT which produces output Project funding requirements
- Cost Management plan is updated in Cost Estimating process
Quality:
- Quality Planning creates 3 plans in output and 3 other outputs which start with Quality.
- TT for Quality planning is ABCDC
- QC has all the outputs of QA + 6 more outputs.
- There are 10 TT for QC. Out of which there are 7 Tools for QC. Remember Inspection appears as TT here and only other place it appears is in Scope verification
HR - Constraints for HR Planning are C E O ( Collective bargaining agreements, Economic condition and Organizaiton Structure )
Risk
- First 4 processes have only one output.
- Risk Register is updated in all the processes after its created.
- We recommed that you memorize ITTO for Risk Management process
Procurement:
- This is a tough chapter and we recommend you keep your focus here and try and memorize as much as you can.
