<p><a href="http://www.speakingincode.com" target="_blank"><em>Speaking in Code</em></a> is starting to take on a life of its own. The most recent development came from Seattle, where an enthusiastic fan when back to Dallas crowing about the film. And now we have a screening in Dallas. Sunday, November 8th at 5:00pm, at the <a href="http://angelikafilmcenter.com/" target="_blank">Angelika Film Center</a>, the sister to NYC&#8217;s more famous NoHo destination. More info <a href="http://dallasvideo.bside.com/2009/films/speakingincode_dallasvideo2009" target="_blank">here</a>.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.squar3.com/site/images/cmjlogo_500.jpg" height="305" width="450" /></p>
<p>As for New York City, we are happy to say it will premiere at the <a href="http://www.cmj.com/marathon/film.php" target="_blank">CMJ Film Festival</a>. Wed, October 21st at 2pm, at the Norwood Theater, 241 W 14th St., b/w 7th &amp; 8th Ave. Those with a CMJ badge need to RSVP <a href="http://newyork.going.com/cmj09speakingincode" target="_blank">here</a> for entry. As for people without a badge, we&#8217;re finding out what the deal is there. Sign up for the <a href="http://www.twitter.com/sicfilm" target="_blank">Twitter service</a> to be sure to know the latest.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.sfindie.com/" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.squar3.com/site/images/2009docfest_title_500.jpg" height="233" width="496" /></a></p>
<p>The <a href="http://sfdocfest.bside.com/2009/films/speakingincode_sfdocfest2009" target="_blank">San Francisco screenings</a> of Speaking in Code are also approaching rapidly. People can buy tickets right now, and if we can sell out both shows, we can prove a demand for other shows in the area and are considering working with promoters on a bigger event.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/83787" target="_blank">Friday, October 23rd, 9:15pm</a><br />
<a href="http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/83786" target="_blank">Thursday, October 29th, 7pm</a></p>
<p>Also next weekend, the film gets screened in <a href="http://unsound.pl/en/festival/program/schedule/2009" target="_blank">Krakow, PL</a>. Though we are still looking for an official premiere of the film in Europe (more on that soon!), we&#8217;re proud to be a part of this extraordinary festival.</p>
<p>We also appreciate the <a href="http://thingskatloves.blogspot.com/2009/10/what-makes-artist-artist-is-in-very.html" target="_blank">rising demand</a> for screenings in <a href="http://berlinessa.squarespace.com/berlinessa-in-new-york/2009/10/8/speaking-in-code-eine-techno-doku-auf-die-ich-mich-wie-wild.html" target="_blank">your area</a>. Both in our email and on the various Web 2.0 sites, we get hit up about the release date every day. We are hoping to have a DVD plan by the end of the month. Despite the overwhelming demand for the film to be seen, bear in mind we are still a small operation.</p>
<p>We are now open to talking to people about screenings, especially seasoned promoters and people with contacts to local theaters. Please contact us if you can help, drop us a line at <a href="mailto:info@squar3.com?subject=I%20want%20to%20help%20screen%20Speaking%20in%20Code" target="_blank">info@squar3.com</a></p>
<p>Musically, our subjects are still churning out great dance music. Modeselektor is the next volume of the esteemed Body Language Mix CD series (buy Volume 8 <a href="http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=227299" target="_blank">here</a> or <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Body-Language-Vol-8-Modeselektor/dp/B002JJE0M4" target="_blank">here</a>). They released a <a href="http://www.residentadvisor.net/podcast-episode.aspx?id=173" target="_blank">podcast on Resident Advisor</a> to celebrate.</p>

Two such festivals, we are happy to say, are some of the world&#8217;s finest.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.dbfestival.com/" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.squar3.com/site/images/decibel_450.JPG" height="248" width="455" /></a></p>
<p>In September, Seattle&#8217;s <a href="http://www.dbfestival.com/" target="_blank">Decibel Festival</a> will screen the movie with a <a href="http://www.dbfestival.com/?page_id=1812" target="_blank">talk afterwards</a> with director Amy Grill and the Wighnomy Brothers. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decibel_Festival" target="_blank">Decibel</a> is a purely home-grown incarnation, built on featuring pristine American talent alongside international names like <a href="http://www.myspace.com/therealalterego" target="_blank">Alter Ego</a> and <a href="http://beyond.datavibe.net/20090310-MoveD.mp3" target="_blank">Move D</a>. We met Decibel director Sean Horton years ago, when we began filming at Mutek in Montreal. That his festival is still around, and is in fact thriving, is a testament to hard work and perseverance. Resident Adviser recently ranked it <a href="http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?1084" target="_blank">the #4 September festival</a> in the world.</p>
<p><a href="http://unsound.pl/en" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.squar3.com/site/images/unsound.JPG" height="234" width="449" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://unsound.pl/en" target="_blank">Unsound</a> in Krakow, Poland was awarded the <a href="http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?1089" target="_blank">#2 October festival</a> by Resident Adviser and, looking at the line-up, it&#8217;s easy to see why. <a href="http://www.myspace.com/marceldettmann" target="_blank">Marcel Dettmann</a>, Omar-S and <a href="http://www.biosphere.no/" target="_blank">Biosphere</a> are just a few of the marquee names. DJ Spinoza (aka Bryan Kasenic) is also on the bill. Spinoza will be featured on the DVD of <em>Speaking in Code</em>, bringing his minimal aesthetic to the clubs of New York City.</p>
<p>In the <a href="http://musformation.com/2009/09/speaking-in-code-lost-in-the-music.html" target="_blank">meantime</a>, <a href="http://humanfrequencies.com/2009/09/14/speaking-in-code-trailer/" target="_blank">there</a> <a href="http://byte.fm/magazin/blog/2009/09/14/neue-techno-doku-speaking-in-code/" target="_blank">are</a> <a href="http://spaetkauf.blogspot.com/2009/09/speaking-in-code.html" target="_blank">quite</a> a <a href="http://www.nerdcore.de/wp/2009/09/14/speaking-in-code-neue-techno-doku/" target="_blank">few</a> <a href="http://www.kraftfuttermischwerk.de/blogg/?p=7605" target="_blank">blogs</a> and <a href="http://musicblips.dailyradar.com/video/speaking-in-code-official-trailer/" target="_blank">posts</a> on the <a href="http://palmsout.net/2009/09/10/decibel-festival-2009/" target="_blank">internet</a> <a href="http://www.erolalkan.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=347014" target="_blank">which</a> <a href="http://matrixsynth.blogspot.com/2009/09/speaking-in-code-trailer.html" target="_blank">continue</a> to <a href="http://wonderlanduk.blogspot.com/2009/09/for-immediate-release-9909-2009-db.html" target="_blank">help</a> <a href="http://www.musikgear.com/?p=398" target="_blank">spread</a> the <a href="http://www.sonicstate.com/news/2009/09/11/coming-soon-speaking-in-code/" target="_blank">word</a> <a href="http://essentialhouse.blogspot.com/2009/09/speaking-in-code.html" target="_blank">about</a> the <a href="http://www.danceblogga.com/2009/08/new-techno-documentary-circulating.html" target="_blank">film</a>, and trust me when I say we appreciate every one of them. The stigma of dance music and dance music culture is still a barrier that we have to overcome, even with a film about said barrier, but the interest shown around the world proves this story must be told.</p>
<p>Musically, the worlds of techno and house continue to collide at a rapid pace. Even signs of breaks, dubstep and drum &amp; bass are starting to infiltrate them, and vice versa. It&#8217;s safe to say some of the barriers and genres within electronic music itself are starting to crumble. Consider:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.squar3.com/site/traxx/Reboot-EnjoyMusic.mp3" target="_blank">Reboot - &#8220;Enjoy Music&#8221;</a> [<a href="https://www.beatport.com/en-US/html/content/artist/detail/41441/Reboot" target="_blank">buy</a>]</p>
<p>With that positive and soulful vocal and the straightforward bassline, Reboot is one of the new stars of what they call &#8220;tech-house.&#8221;</p>
<p>Like the recent manifestation of &#8220;electro,&#8221; however, this new tech-house is more of it&#8217;s own animal, as with another new star, Jamie Jones.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.squar3.com/site/traxx/JamieJones-Acerola.mp3" target="_blank">Jamie Jones - &#8220;Acerola&#8221;</a> [<a href="https://www.beatport.com/en-US/html/content/artist/detail/27044/Jamie%20Jones" target="_blank">buy</a>]</p>
<p>Both the these things come together in a grand degree when Jones teams up with Berlin&#8217;s Teifschwarz and New York City&#8217;s rising star&#8211;Seth Troxler:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.squar3.com/site/traxx/TiefschwarzfeatSethTroxler-Trust(JamieJonesRemix).mp3" target="_blank">Teifschwarz feat. Seth Troxler - &#8220;Hurt (Jamie Jones Remix)&#8221;</a> [<a href="https://www.beatport.com/en-US/html/content/artist/detail/19798/Seth%20Troxler" target="_blank">buy</a>]</p>
<p>The most promising part of this unification is that old divisions of race and history are being disregarded. House no longer means black (Tiefschwarz literally means &#8220;more black&#8221;) and techno no longer means white (Jones is black, while Troxler is of mixed race) &#8230; All aboard the trans global express.</p>

In the meantime, there are quite a few blogs and posts on the internet which continue to help spread the word about the film, and trust me when I say we appreciate every one of them. The stigma of dance music and dance music culture is still a barrier that we have to overcome, even with a film about said barrier, but the interest shown around the world proves this story must be told.

Musically, the worlds of techno and house continue to collide at a rapid pace. Even signs of breaks, dubstep and drum #38; bass are starting to infiltrate them, and vice versa. It's safe to say some of the barriers and genres within electronic music itself are starting to crumble. Consider:

Reboot - "Enjoy Music" [buy]

With that positive and soulful vocal and the straightforward bassline, Reboot is one of the new stars of what they call "tech-house."

Like the recent manifestation of "electro," however, this new tech-house is more of it's own animal, as with another new star, Jamie Jones.

Jamie Jones - "Acerola" [buy]

Both the these things come together in a grand degree when Jones teams up with Berlin's Teifschwarz and New York City's rising star--Seth Troxler:

Teifschwarz feat. Seth Troxler - "Hurt (Jamie Jones Remix)" [buy]

The most promising part of this unification is that old divisions of race and history are being disregarded. House no longer means black (Tiefschwarz literally means "more black") and techno no longer means white (Jones is black, while Troxler is of mixed race) ... All aboard the trans global express.</itunes:summary>

<p>In a documentary about a subculture, like <em><a href="http://www.speakingincode.com" target="_blank">Speaking in Code</a></em>, one of the over-arching themes is that of acceptance. Are the characters accepted? Is the music accepted? We are happy to say the first film festival out side of Boston has confirmed the acceptance of <em>Speaking in Code</em>.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.sfindie.com/" target="_blank"></a><a href="http://www.sfindie.com/" target="_blank">8th annual SF DocFest</a> emailed us last week to confirm that <em>SiC</em> will officially be screened October 16-28, 2009 at their exclusive documentary festival, a component of SF indie fest. We couldn&#8217;t be happier to be a part of the prestigious festival which, in the past, has featured such success stories as <em><a href="http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,25986689-16947,00.html">Anvil! The Story of Anvil</a></em> and <em><a href="http://www.examiner.com/x-9502-Salt-Lake-City-DVD-Examiner~y2009m8d24-DVD-Review-Audience-of-One" target="_blank">Audience of One</a></em>. Those of you in San Francisco, be on the lookout for a proper screening announcement time soon.</p>

<p>In the blogosphere, Chicago DJ Liz McLean Knight (aka Liz Revision) takes a compelling take on acceptance&#8211;via our trailer&#8211;at both <a href="http://lizrevision.com/speaking-in-code-a-documentary-on-the-passion-fueled-lives-of-contemporary-techno-creators.html" target="_blank">her blog</a> and <em><a href="http://gapersblock.com/transmission/2009/08/27/speaking_in_code_a_documentary/index.php" target="_blank">Gaper&#8217;s Block</a></em>:</p>
<p><em>We do need educational vehicles like one this to explain to the world why we’re so passionate about something so abstract, yet moving and emotional. Can’t wait to see the final product.<br />
</em><br />
Thanks, Liz. Portland, OR&#8217;s whitecar(tm) had this to say in a post at <a href="http://www.nuevaforma.com/tag/speaking-in-code/" target="_blank">Nueva Forma</a>:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.nuevaforma.com/tag/speaking-in-code/" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.squar3.com/site/images/nuevaforma_450.jpg" height="251" width="450" /></a></p>
<p><em>Most documentaries on electronic music tend to focus on superstars and act as a starter kit for the uninitiated. </em>Speaking in Code<em> doesn’t really have that feel to me. I’m really excited to see it because it seems so focused.</em></p>
<p>That&#8217;s very much true.</p>
<p>Like all new ideas or old bias, acceptance only comes with time. The only way new things can arrive is for the old things leave and something must take its place.</p>
<p>In the August issue of XLR8R, the urban culture and electronic music magazine, on page 16, you&#8217;ll find a interview with <em>Speaking in Code</em> director Amy Grill saying just as much. It&#8217;s a national magazine, and available at bookstores like Barnes &amp; Noble and Borders, but you can direct-download a .pdf of the issue <a href="http://media.xlr8r.com/files/magazine/pdf/XLR8R%20128%20Full%20Web.pdf" target="_blank">here</a>.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s their annual &#8220;Labels We Love&#8221; issue, so there&#8217;s lots of good stuff, including profiles on labels Modern Love (<a href="http://www.xlr8r.com/podcast/2009/08/labels-we-love-modern-love-record" target="_blank">podcast</a>), who were a part of this year&#8217;s <a href="http://communikey.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Communikey Festival</a>, <a href="http://www.mothershipmusic.com/" target="_blank">Mothership</a>, who I had the pleasure to work with in San Francisco, and a Type Records (<a href="http://www.xlr8r.com/podcast/2009/08/labels-we-love-type-records">podcast</a>), one of the many exclusive UK labels of <a href="http://www.forcedexposure.com/emailupdates.html" target="_blank">Forced Exposure</a> (see thier ad on page 27).</p>
<p>To explain the phenomenon of this culture, <a href="http://www.electronicbeats.de/2009/08/villalobos-der-film/" target="_blank">other films</a> continue to enter the fray, like this one about the scene&#8217;s most elusive character: The extraordinary DJ and incomparable producer <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ricardo_Villalobos" target="_blank">Ricardo Villalobos</a>. It has been accepted into this year&#8217;s <span class="white">Venice Film Festival.</span></p>

<p>The mysterious DJ recently released &#8220;Bank Brotherhood&#8221; with Los Updates. A curious song about the abstract idea of digital money.<br />

Ricardo Villalobos and Los Updates - Bank Brotherhood</a></p>
<p>He was certainly someone that was on SiC&#8217;s radar, but proved too elusive after he did not show up when we were in Koln.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s also this film: <em>An Einem Sonntag in Berlin</em>, or On One Sunday in Berlin. Wherein we go out in Berlin on a Sunday morning (watch for a quick appearance of Villalobos in this as well):</p>
<p><object width="425" height="350" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/2GiTQe4nIJw"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/2GiTQe4nIJw" /><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /></object></p>
<p>Greece is a country which has seen a surge of electronic dance music activity, and acceptance, as indicated by two different festivals, both of which are screening <em>Speaking in Code</em>. <a href="http://www.entechnoathens.gr/ENTECHNO.ASPX?PID=100" target="_blank">EnTechno</a> is in its second year, and is screening the movie alongside appearances from Ellen Allien and others, while and <a href="http://www.reworks.gr/" target="_blank">Reworks</a> is now in its fourth year.</p>
<p>As for acceptance here in Boston, <a href="http://www.myspace.com/makeitnew" target="_blank">Make It New</a>, which is coming up on its 5th anniversary, was nominated for <a href="http://thephoenix.com/BMP/Boston/2009/Clubnight/" target="_blank">Best Club Night</a> at the Boston Phoenix (it was an honor to be nominated). <a href="http://www.myspace.com/jankrueger" target="_blank">Jan Kruger</a> makes a second appearance this Thursday.</p>
<p>One of our favorite former guests, Isolée, has a great remix out right now:</p>
<p><a href="http://squar3.com/site/traxx/Ripperton-Prends-MoiAvecToi(IsoleeRemix).mp3" target="_blank">Ripperton - Prends-Moi Avec Toi (Isolee Remix)</a></p>
<p>Boston&#8217;s own <a href="http://www.soulclap.us" target="_blank">SoulClap</a> is making serious waves with the Wolf + Lamb label out of New York City. Click to download one of Soul Clap&#8217;s newest podcasts:</p>

<p>We&#8217;re also happy to say Jan Rosenfeld of <a href="http://yesgiantess.com" target="_blank">Yes, Giantess</a> was in Boston&#8217;s little scene before his pop band blew up. He&#8217;s let us share a new track from them. You&#8217;ll hear about them soon:</p>
<p><a href="http://squar3.com/site/traxx/Giantess-Can%27tHelpIt.mp3" target="_blank">Yes, Giantess - Can&#8217;t Help It</a></p>
<p>We&#8217;re still taken with the productions of <a href="http://www.megaupload.com/?d=XIJJFTT7" target="_blank">Coralcola</a>. Here&#8217;s a recent ambient track from him:</p>
<p><a href="http://squar3.com/site/traxx/Coralcola-SleepIsForDreamers.mp3" target="_blank">Coralcola - Sleep Is for Dreamers</a></p>
<p>And Basstown resident <a href="http://www.myspace.com/djdieyoung" target="_blank">DJ Die Young</a> gets better at remixes every time he does another one. Here&#8217;s a new one where he&#8217;s working with <a href="http://chrissherron.net/" target="_blank">Chris Wade</a> of Providence, RI:</p>
<p><a href="http://squar3.com/site/traxx/ChrisWade-Broke(DJDieYoungRemix).mp3" target="_blank">Chris Wade - Broke (DJ Die Young Remix)</a></p>
<p>And another remix of Mystery Roar:</p>
<p><a href="http://squar3.com/site/traxx/MysteryRoar-NYCBalloon(DJDieYoungJustRightRemix).mp3" target="_blank">Mystery Roar - NYC Balloon (DJ Die Young Just Right Remix) </a></p>
<p>Whether these, ourselves and others are accepted in the end &#8230; time can only tell.</p>

<p>Deciding amongst thousands of film submissions must be insane, as our co-Producer Jason Redmond, of the <a href="http://iffboston.bside.com/2009/films/speakingincode_iffboston2009" target="_blank">Independent Film Festival of Boston</a>, could likely attest.</p>
<p>The website <a href="https://www.withoutabox.com/" target="_blank">Without A Box</a> is massively helpful in submitting and sorting to these festivals, and surfing around we found <a href="http://www.in-edit.beefeater.es" target="_blank">hundreds</a> of other <a href="http://www.cinemastlouis.org/">festivals</a> we had <a href="http://www.hiff.org/" target="_blank">never heard of</a>. We&#8217;re happy with the 9 we&#8217;ve whittled them down to. Most of these festivals happen in October or November.</p>
<p>Which means that, if accepted, Athens will host the European premiere of <em>Speaking in Code</em>.</p>
<p>Which is certainly fine by us. Greece has long held a thirst for dancing and art, going back to, well, the beginning of Western Civilization. Lately, techno music has been buzzing in the land of Zeus, consider <a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/enTechno-Techno/96412368051" target="_blank">EnTechno</a>, the electronic music festival that takes place in September 09. So far they have enlisted <em>Speaking in Code</em> stars Ellen Allien, Wighnomy Brothers to participate in the fest. Check out their Facebook page <a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/enTechno-Techno/96412368051" target="_blank">here</a>.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s worth saying that paying for shipping and entry into these festivals is putting the project even deeper into a money hole. It seems to be that the financial commitment never ends when you make a movie.</p>

<p>Musically, the mission remains the same: bring people together to dance and form a community of minds. In today&#8217;s tough times, such a concept is even more crucial, it seems to me. <p><em>Speaking in Code</em> is in the midst of submitting to numerous European, North American and South American film festivals. By the time 2009 has ended, we hope that markets like <a href="http://www.chicagofilmfestival.com/" target="_blank">Chicago</a>, <a href="http://www.mostra.org/" target="_blank">Sao Paulo</a>, <a href="http://www.sheffdocfest.com" target="_blank">Sheffield</a>, <a href="http://www.stockholmfilmfestival.se" target="_blank">Stockhol</a><a href="http://www.stockholmfilmfestival.se" target="_blank">m</a>, <a href="http://festival-deauville.congres-deauville.com" target="_blank">Deauville</a> and more will all have the opportunity to host <em><a href="http://www.speakingincode.com" target="_blank">Speaking in Code</a></em> through the many festivals that will happen from now until the end of the year.</p>
<p>In the meantime, work has begun on the DVD product of <em>SiC</em>, which will most likely come out near Fall of 2010. The vast amount of footage we have access too will make for some great DVD extras for <em>Speaking in Code. </em>Director Amy Grill and Jason Blanchard recently met up to make a few extras. Here is a sneak peak:</p>
<p>Deleted Scenes:<br />
&#8211; Monolake at <a href="http://www.dubplates-mastering.com/" target="_blank">Dub Plates &amp; Mastering</a>: How records get cut<br />
&#8211; <a href="http://www.thejuanmaclean.com/" target="_blank">Juan MacLean</a> pre-show chat in Miami<br />
&#8211; Bryan Kasenic <a href="http://beyondbooking.com/" target="_blank">promotes minimalism</a> in New York City</p>
<p>Uncut Concert Footage:<br />

<p>The <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plmAOC7RYGk" target="_blank">Wighnomy Brothers</a>:<br />
&#8211; 2 years later</p>
<p>There are also many outtakes which will be included and who knows what other extras will come about as things come together. Every film has a press kit, which details the making of and acknowledges the contributors in an official way. The first draft, and every other subsequent draft, can be found at <a href="http://squar3.com/site/SiC/Speaking_In_Code_presskit.pdf" target="_blank">this link</a>. Check it out.</p>

<p>The movie also now has a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speaking_In_Code" target="_blank">Wikipedia page here</a>&#8211;feel free to add and edit it&#8211;and the Facebook fan page has <a href="http://www.facebook.com/speakingincode" target="_blank">an official URL here</a>.</p>

<p>There&#8217;s a lot of activity out there for our featured artists as well. Robag Wruhme has a <a href="http://www.littlewhiteearbuds.com/robag-wruhme-abusus-adde/" target="_blank">new, stellar</a> 12&#8243; out, having just returned from a successful US tour with the <a href="http://www.mefeedia.com/entry/wighnomy-brothers-blk-market-uddermadness-3-year-anniversary-brooklyn-nyc-5-22-2009/18519754" target="_blank">Wighnomy Brothers</a>. Freude Am Tanzen has started a <a href="http://fatplastics.ingernet.de/podcasts/podcast1.xml" target="_blank">podcast</a> and the Wighnomies appear on a remix 12&#8243; from <a href="http://www.residentadvisor.net/review-view.aspx?id=6212" target="_blank">Gui Boratto</a>. <p>The re-appearance of Modeselektor (as part of <a href="http://www.bpitchcontrol.de/Moderat/" target="_blank">Moderat</a>) in Boston was very impressive. The trio played mostly songs off the new album, and less of their own solo material, but the presentation was shockingly cool. In front of huge three video screens, Szary, Gernot and Sascha stood equally apart, as the masterful visuals of BPitch partner <a href="http://www.pfadfinderei.com/" target="_blank">Pfadfinderei</a> glowed behind them, and almost 3-D visual presentation of the music. The crowd, perhaps caught off guard by the lack of recognizable tunes, was all the same swooning at the show.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.squar3.com/site/images/moderat_screens_500.jpg" height="333" width="500" /></p>
<p><a href="http://www.speakingincode.com" target="_blank">Speaking in Code</a> was screened just before the show in the Paradise front room, thanks to some interest from <a href="http://www.livenation.com/artist/moderat-tickets" target="_blank">LiveNation</a> who facilitated the viewing. It started late, as Modeselektor&#8217;s flight was delayed, but nearly everyone got to view the whole thing. A third public screening of the movie.</p>
<p>Perhaps the most rewarding thing to have happened, aside from the chance to have Modeselektor themselves see the movie, was the emergence of a few very thoughtful reviews.</p>
<p><a href="http://openlettersmonthly.com/blog/speaking-in-code/" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.squar3.com/site/images/openlettersmonthly.com_500.jpg" height="279" width="500" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://openlettersmonthly.com/blog/speaking-in-code/" target="_blank">Open Letters</a> is a literary review blog which published a &#8220;microreview&#8221; of the film on June 1.</p>
<p><em>&#8220;Fittingly, Grill places her interview subjects off-center, counterpointed by stray graffiti or AV cables. There is an off-and-on color rhythm as schemes alternate between the pale light of northern mornings and the powdery dark of clubs.&#8221;</em></p>
<p><a href="http://santanaphoto.blogspot.com/2009/05/speaking-in-code.html" target="_blank">Santana Photo</a> blog saw the movie at the Paradise, and published this review on May 27:</p>
<p><em>&#8220;Speaking in Code is a documentary shot over the past 3 years about a couple from Boston who beautifully capture the high and lows of being incredibly passionate about techno music.&#8221;</em></p>
<p>While June 10 saw another thoughtful review from cinetrix at the film blog, <a href="http://pullquote.typepad.com/pullquote/2009/06/cant-stop-the-music-part-3.html" target="_blank">pullquote</a>:</p>
<p><em>&#8220;Code evangelizes for electronic dance music, specifically techno, examining its spread from its origins in African-American clubs in the midwest to the huge festival circuit in Europe and trying to figure out why it fails to thrive on that scale in its home country.&#8221;</em></p>
<p>It&#8217;s great to see people put so much thought into the film, which seems to get more interesting as people input their perspective. After you&#8217;ve spent so long living with a project, you really have no idea how people will react.</p>
<p>&#8220;Jason and I are on a roll here with the DVD extras,&#8221; says director Amy Grill from the New Jersey shore, as she and editor Jason Blanchard finish with the added content for the forthcoming DVD (outtakes, separate mini-stories, live footage, etc.).</p>
<p>This weekend I&#8217;ve got to work on the media kit which will go to the European festivals in the fall and winter of 2009.</p>
<p>Musically, Moderat is getting a lot of attention, including a big-room remix from <a href="http://www.bookashade.com/" target="_blank">Booka Shade</a>:</p>
<p><a href="http://squar3.com/site/traxx/Moderat-RustyNailsBookaShadeRemix.mp3" target="_blank">Moderat - Rusty Nails (Booka Shade Remix)</a></p>
<p>And our friend Apparat was called to tackle a remix for the <a href="http://thedailyswarm.com/headlines/moby-hates-iplayi-dissed-potheads/" target="_blank">unassuming king</a> of dance music, Moby:</p>
<p><a href="http://squar3.com/site/traxx/Moby-PaleHorsesApparatRemix.mp3" target="_blank">Moby - Pale Horses (Apparat Remix)</a></p>

<p><a href="http://squar3.com/site/traxx/CrystalCastles-SheFellOutCoralcolaRemix.mp3" target="_blank">Crystal Castles - She Fell Out (Coralcola Remix)</a></p>
<p>I&#8217;m partial to this Frightened Rabbit remix from Basstown&#8217;s own <a href="http://www.myspace.com/DJdieyoung" target="_blank">DJ Die Young</a> (who opened for Moderat):</p>

<p>Very special thank you to the Wighnomy Brothers, Soren and Gabor, who not only were able to share in the film with us, but played for the first time ever in America at the after-party at <a href="http://www.myspace.com/makeitnew" target="_blank">Make It New</a>. Very special thank you to the Wighnomy Brothers, Soren and Gabor, who not only were able to share in the film with us, but played for the first time ever in America at the after-party at Make It New. Words simply cannot describe how much such a confluence of events impacted my life. I am truly at a loss.

But now, only 4 days later, events appear to be repeating.

<p>We are happy to report that the tickets for the second screening of <em><a href="http://www.speakingincode.com" target="_blank">Speaking in Code</a></em> are now on sale. You can buy them <a href="http://www.brattlefilm.org/brattlefilm/movie_detail/090521.html" target="_blank">here</a>. The screening will take place <strong>Thursday, May 21st at 7pm</strong>. But the best part is yet to come.</p>
<p>As we pursue premieres in all corners of the world, especially film festivals in <a href="http://www.dokument-festival.cz" target="_blank">Europe</a>, the <a href="http://www.foylefilmfestival.org" target="_blank">UK</a> and <a href="http://www.austinfilmfestival.com" target="_blank">America</a>, the one place we know we can screen the film, without regard to film festival entry rules, is right here in Boston. Being that the world premiere already happened at the <a href="http://squar3.com/2009/04/09/tickets-on-sale-now-for-speaking-in-code/" target="_blank">Somerville Theatre</a>, we can show the film around town at will. And the <a href="http://www.brattlefilm.org" target="_blank">Brattle</a> is a special place to have it, to be sure.</p>
<p>Since <a href="http://www.othermusic.com/2002february06update.html" target="_blank">arriving in Boston</a>, the Brattle Theatre has supported the underground. And, <a href="http://www.discogs.com/Marc-Romboy-vs-Blake-Baxter-Underground-Thang/release/1009372" target="_blank">as we all know</a>, everything starts in the underground. There were a <a href="http://www.wickedlocal.com/cambridge/archive/x563261803" target="_blank">few months</a> when the Brattle may have gone away. But no more. Last year, the Brattle hosted the <a href="http://basstown.blogspot.com/2008/02/tomorrow-night-daft-punks-electroma.html" target="_blank">Boston premiere</a> of Daft Punk&#8217;s <em>Electroma</em>, and now we rejoin with them for <em>Speaking in Code</em>.</p>
<p>The best part: A ticket stub from <em>Speaking in Code</em> gets you to the front of the line that night to see the <a href="http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=89764904000" target="_blank">Wighnomy Brothers at Make It New</a>. This will be their US debut. You don&#8217;t want to miss it. Buy your tickets now.</p>

<p>Music-wise the now Berlin-based Dj and producer Philip Sherburne is one of the people featured in the film. He wrote about the experience at his <a href="http://phs.abstractdynamics.org/2009/04/speaking_in_code.html" target="_blank">popular and long-running blog</a> a few weeks back. Comments to the post include &#8220;<em>how can i see it if i&#8217;m in the uk</em>?&#8221; and &#8220;<em>hope I will be able see it in France </em>…&#8221; We hope so too!</p>
<p>He recently recorded an excellent mix for <a href="http://www.t2x.eu/timecast/timecast02-philip-sherburne/" target="_blank">Time To Express</a> and the <a href="http://fairtilizer.com/track/timecast02-philipsherburne" target="_blank">Fairtilizer</a> community, but we&#8217;re rehosting it to be sure all fans of the movie can hear his aesthetic and talent. Of course, he includes a track from Robert Henke (free downloads of his music are <a href="http://www.monolake.de/downloads/" target="_blank">here</a>), also in <a href="http://www.speakingincode.com" target="_blank"><em>Speaking in Code</em></a> and Andy Stott, whom we met at the screening in Boulder, CO.</p>
<p>&#8220;The tracklist came together in fits and starts,&#8221; he tells the blog, &#8220;over the span of several weeks. There’s no explicit theme; rather, the set arose out of the attempt to fix a certain kind of sound in place, one that had been flitting around my head for some time.&#8221;</p>
<p>The tracklisting:</p>

<p>A whole mess of different worlds collide on May 21st when <em><a href="http://www.speakingincode.com" target="_blank">Speaking in Code</a></em> stars the Wighnomy Brothers make their US debut at <a href="http://www.myspace.com/makeitnew" target="_blank">Make It New</a>. For years, the Wighnomy Brothers (aka Robag Whrume and Monkey Maffia) have released excellent, funky, minimal grooves from their <a href="http://www.freude-am-tanzen.com/" target="_blank">home base</a> in Jena, Germany, but an appearance on the North America continent was always rare indeed.</p>
<p>So the Wighnomy Bros. have never played the US. They have played Montreal (as seen in the film) and they have come close to playing the <a href="http://www.demf.com/" target="_blank">Detroit Movement Festival</a>, but we&#8217;re proud to say they will first step on US soil at Logan International Airport in Boston.</p>
<p>Before they spin their always soulful, technoid, house-i-fied DJ set, they will watch the movie at the <a href="http://www.brattlefilm.org" target="_blank">Brattle Theatre</a>. You are invited to join them. And then join us at the Middlesex Lounge later that night to watch them spin records.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s such a perfect meeting of the two worlds it&#8217;s hard to put it into words. As you can tell by this ill-designed post.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.squar3.com/site/images/WighnomyBros_niagara.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.squar3.com/site/images/WighnomyBros_niagara_450.jpg" width="450" height="392" /></a></p>
<p>Tickets for the movie will be available soon. Tickets for the DJ set at Make It New will be $10 at the door. So for under $20 you&#8217;ll have the chance to see the movie and then spend the night dancing away with the Wighnomy Brothers. It&#8217;s perfect.</p>
<p>As far as the film goes, it&#8217;s scheduled screening at the first-ever Chinese electronic music festival has all sorts of Chinese <a href="http://www.squar3.com/site/images/bluzz/www.netfm.com.cn.jpg" target="_blank">blogs</a> and <a href="http://www.squar3.com/site/images/bluzz/www.douban.com.jpg" target="_blank">discussion groups</a> going strong. Since its premiere in Boston on April 23rd, it&#8217;s been written about in <a href="http://www.squar3.com/site/images/bluzz/clublife.ru.jpg" target="_blank">Russia</a>, <a href="http://www.squar3.com/site/images/bluzz/dziwnepapierosy.soup.io.jpg" target="_blank">Poland</a>, <a href="http://www.squar3.com/site/images/bluzz/decoded.outer-rim.org.jpg" target="_blank">Australia</a> and <a href="http://www.squar3.com/site/images/bluzz/www.fedosrecords.com.jpg" target="_blank">many</a> <a href="http://www.squar3.com/site/images/bluzz/enormousyes.blogspot.com.jpg" target="_blank">more</a>. Keep track of the worldwide buzz through the <a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Speaking-in-Code/31488973680" target="_blank">Facebook group</a>.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.acupuncture-records.com/blog/index.php?/site/detail/intro_2009_beijing_electronic_music_festival/" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.squar3.com/site/images/intro_cn.gif" width="450" height="637" /></a></p>
<p>It&#8217;s certainly an honor to be considered a part of the techno community to the point we are participating in this <a href="http://www.residentadvisor.net/news.aspx?id=10499" target="_blank">historic event</a>. The two other films included in the festival are <em><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drdf8OeBUUM" target="_blank">Berlin Calling</a></em> and <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CviTOGsbXXk" target="_blank"><em>We Call It Techno</em></a>.</p>
<p><a href="http://vimeo.com/4201002" target="_blank">May 23rd</a> sees three artists in particular cross the border into Beijing. Chris Leibing is a long-time hard-techno genius who can rock any crowd of any size with ripping, razor-sharp grooves. His own tracks are much the same:</p>
<p><a href="http://squar3.com/site/traxx/ChrisLiebing-Bangpop.mp3" target="_blank">Chris Liebing - &#8220;Bangpop&#8221;</a></p>
<p>We were lucky to spend some time sightseeing in San Francisco with the Italoboyz before their hugely popular tracks like &#8220;Zinga,&#8221; &#8220;Viktor Casanova&#8221; and &#8220;Bahia (Party Swing)&#8221; blew up (they&#8217;ve also become accustomed to visiting us here in Boston at <a href="http://blog.soulclap.us/2009/04/06/italoboyz-are-back-this-wedensday/" target="_blank">Soulclap&#8217;s MWT night</a>). We also took <a href="http://www.mothershipmusic.com/index.php?page_id=24&amp;album=1&amp;gallery=2" target="_blank">some pictures</a> of them back in the day. Their &#8220;Drama Dub&#8221; is a manipulative fun time.</p>
<p><a href="http://squar3.com/site/traxx/Italoboyz-ZingaDramaDub.mp3" target="_blank">Italoboyz - &#8220;Zinga (Drama Dub)&#8221;</a></p>
<p>While M.A.N.D.Y. are part owners of Get Physical, perhaps the most well-respected label in the club these days. They&#8217;ve <a href="http://www.residentadvisor.net/news.aspx?id=8775" target="_blank">reworked</a> all sorts of class acts, but we&#8217;ll highlight their remix of Rockers Hi Fi&#8217;s &#8220;Push Push,&#8221; one of the most iconic songs in techno history:</p>
<p><a href="http://squar3.com/site/traxx/RockersHi-Fi-PushPush(M.A.N.D.Y.Remix).mp3" target="_blank">Rockers Hi Fi - &#8220;Push Push (M.A.N.D.Y. Remix)&#8221;</a></p>
<p><em>&#8220;We can surely turn the tide<br />
We can push the tempest by&#8221;</em></p>
<p><a href="http://squar3.com/site/traxx/RockersHi-Fi-PushPushRainerWeichholdBirthdayRemix.mp3" target="_blank">Rockers Hi Fi - &#8220;Push Push (Rainer Weichhold Birthday Remix)&#8221;</a></p>
<p>Finally, tickets for the Boston show featuring Modeselektor &amp; Apparat (as Moderat), plus Make It New resident <a href="http://www.myspace.com/djdieyoung" target="_blank">DJ Die Young</a> and Speaking in Code character <a href="http://www.myspace.com/baltimoroder" target="_blank">Baltimoroder</a> are <a href="http://www.livenation.com/edp/eventId/407618" target="_blank">on sale now</a>.</p>

For years, the Wighnomy Brothers (aka Robag Whrume and Monkey Maffia) have released excellent, funky, minimal grooves from their home base in Jena, Germany, but an appearance on the North America continent was always rare indeed.

So the Wighnomy Bros. have never played the US. They have played Montreal (as seen in the film) and they have come close to playing the Detroit Movement Festival, but we're proud to say they will first step on US soil at Logan International Airport in Boston.

Before they spin their always soulful, technoid, house-i-fied DJ set, they will watch the movie at the Brattle Theatre. You are invited to join them. And then join us at the Middlesex Lounge later that night to watch them spin records.

It's such a perfect meeting of the two worlds it's hard to put it into words. As you can tell by this ill-designed post.

Tickets for the movie will be available soon. Tickets for the DJ set at Make It New will be $10 at the door. So for under $20 you'll have the chance to see the movie and then spend the night dancing away with the Wighnomy Brothers. It's perfect.

As far as the film goes, it's scheduled screening at the first-ever Chinese electronic music festival has all sorts of Chinese blogs and discussion groups going strong. Since its premiere in Boston on April 23rd, it's been written about in Russia, Poland, Australia and many more. Keep track of the worldwide buzz through the Facebook group.

It's certainly an honor to be considered a part of the techno community to the point we are participating in this historic event. The two other films included in the festival are Berlin Calling and We Call It Techno.

May 23rd sees three artists in particular cross the border into Beijing. Chris Leibing is a long-time hard-techno genius who can rock any crowd of any size with ripping, razor-sharp grooves. His own tracks are much the same:

Chris Liebing - "Bangpop"

We were lucky to spend some time sightseeing in San Francisco with the Italoboyz before their hugely popular tracks like "Zinga," "Viktor Casanova" and "Bahia (Party Swing)" blew up (they've also become accustomed to visiting us here in Boston at Soulclap's MWT night). We also took some pictures of them back in the day. Their "Drama Dub" is a manipulative fun time.

Italoboyz - "Zinga (Drama Dub)"

While M.A.N.D.Y. are part owners of Get Physical, perhaps the most well-respected label in the club these days. They've reworked all sorts of class acts, but we'll highlight their remix of Rockers Hi Fi's "Push Push," one of the most iconic songs in techno history:

Rockers Hi Fi - "Push Push (M.A.N.D.Y. Remix)"

"We can surely turn the tide
We can push the tempest by"

Rockers Hi Fi - "Push Push (Rainer Weichhold Birthday Remix)"

Finally, tickets for the Boston show featuring Modeselektor #38; Apparat (as Moderat), plus Make It New resident DJ Die Young and Speaking in Code character Baltimoroder are on sale now.</itunes:summary>

<p>&#8220;It captivated us from beginning to end!&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;really loved the movie. I wouldn&#8217;t say this if it wasn&#8217;t true, but it was incredibly well done and I thought the story was fantastic.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;just wanted to say, i enjoyed the movie a lot.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;I thought the movie last night was incredible. I cannot thank you guys enough for putting this together, it&#8217;s a true piece of art.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;I would very much like to own it so please give me info when it becomes available.&#8221;</p>
<p>This is just a sampling of the enormous feedback we got, either via <a href="mailto:amy@sQuar3.com" target="_blank">email</a> or from <a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Speaking-in-Code/31488973680" target="_blank">Facebook postings</a> or <a href="http://www.myspace.com/speakingincode" target="_blank">MySpace</a> messages or elsewhere, about the premiere screening of <em>Speaking in Code</em>.</p>

<p>Two weeks ago, the wonderful <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/dayvidday/sets/72157617113714447/" target="_blank">Communikey Festival</a>, in the mountain college town of Boulder, Colorado, hosted director Amy Grill and I for a special sneak peek of Speaking in Code, and the result was very much the same.</p>
<p>We were overwhelmed not just with congratulations on a job well done, but with numerous people who were emotionally moved by the movie, some even to tears. See some photos of the festival at the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/dayvidday/sets/72157617113714447/" target="_blank">Flickr account</a>, or via <a href="http://www.seze.net/blog/2009/04/23/my-communikey-festival-photos-boulder-colorado/" target="_blank">Seze Devres</a> of Beyond Booking.</p>
<p>It has been an eventful two weeks to be sure. A few things have proven true:</p>
<p style="text-align: center"><img src="http://www.squar3.com/site/images/sic_poster_boulder.jpg" /></p>
<p>1. <em>Speaking in Code</em> is a historical film&#8211;in that it gives a look into the lives of electronic musicians, producers and devotees that is more intimate and interesting than any movie that has come before. I even overheard it being compared favorably to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D._A._Pennebaker" target="_blank">DA Pennebaker</a>&#8217;s <em><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PedxiosPF8U" target="_blank">Don&#8217;t Look Back</a></em>.</p>
<p>2. Even those unfamiliar with electronic music or it&#8217;s &#8220;scene&#8221; found it compelling. &#8220;<em>You don&#8217;t even have to like or care about techno music</em>,&#8221; said one viewer, &#8220;<em>to be truly captured by the movie</em>.&#8221;</p>
<p>3. The music that we picked still sounds great as it did when it was released years ago, and the artists who we profiled, specifically <strong>Modeselektor</strong> and the <strong>Wighnomy Brothers</strong>, are more relevant today than ever.</p>
<p>To that end, both are coming to America in May, the <a href="http://www.residentadvisor.net/dj-page.aspx?id=689" target="_blank">Wighnomy Brothers</a> for the very first time. The former will make their US debut after a second Boston screening of the movie, <a href="http://www.brattlefilm.org/brattlefilm/movie_detail/090521.html" target="_blank">May 21st at the Brattle Theatre</a>. The Wighnomies will play a special set at <a href="http://www.residentadvisor.net/event-detail.aspx?id=93887" target="_blank">Make It New</a>.</p>
<p align="center"><a href="http://www.myspace.com/moderat" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.squar3.com/site/images/moderat.jpg" width="500" height="333" /></a></p>
<p>Modeselektor is coming to Boston four days later, on May 24th, with fellow BPitch artist Apparat. Both will also play as <a href="http://www.myspace.com/moderat" target="_blank">Moderat</a> at the legendary <a href="http://www.livenation.com/venue/paradise-rock-club-tickets" target="_blank">Paradise Rock club</a>. This is four years after we brought them to the Enormous Room, an event that is featured in the film.</p>
<p>Needless to say, the world premiere Thursday night confirmed a thought we have been saying for years: <em>Speaking in Code</em> is a very special movie.</p>
<p>Much more to come, including more pictures from Boulder and the IFFBoston premiere and the news of more screenings to come. Including the <a href="http://english.people.com.cn/90001/90782/6646508.html" target="_blank">Chinese premiere</a> of Speaking in Code, where it will screen alongside <em><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CviTOGsbXXk" target="_blank">We Call It Techno</a></em> and <em>Berlin Calling</em>, starring Paul Kalkbrenner.</p>
