LTE-A

If you’re travelling for work indefinitely, need to minimize your data cost, best check out Rain or Afrihost for their LTE-A offerings. Especially, it is a ‘mobile fibre connection’ with unlimited data.

Rain offers free unlimited data for a certain amount of days for each contract type ranging from 15 days free to 90 days free. From there, you only pay for the data used, and do not have to load bundles like that with Afrihost — where you’d need to buy bundles. Moreover, each contract choice with Rain also includes a SIM card, or a Huawei smartphone.

With lots of mobile network provider, the broadband market in South Africa is still evolving. Good LTE coverage is one of the most important factors for consumers when selecting a mobile service provider. Almost half of the country’s operator is now providing good mobile network coverage, LTE services, and faster speeds.

Let’s find out the best mobile Network provider in South Africa

Vodacom

Vodacom is the biggest mobile network provider in South Africa with the highest coverage at the best prices. With a test of an independent network, it achieved the overall highest score for the widest coverage of the country’s mobile network operators. Moreover, the regular prepaid sim cards are available in all of their outlets and supermarkets. While they offer a large variety of price plans, the prepaid 79c planbis the best value plan for voice calls. Vodacom has almost 10,200 cellular networks with population coverage of 99.8% in South Africa.

Most importantly, Vodacom’s 3G population coverage is 96% which is greater than MTN’s 3G coverage.

“Vodacom stood out in particular in OpenSignal’s 3G speed and latency categories, though it faced much stiffer competition from MTN in our core 4G metrics,” the group said.

Considering the brands exceeding and falling short of customer expectations, Johannesburg customers are most satisfied with their service.

MTN

MTN is a multinational mobile phone company primarily based in South Africa and the biggest rival of Vodacom.

Its network and speeds are the highest. MTN launched 4G/LTE in 2014 and MTN’s data is slightly cheaper. MTN is the only provider that roams in Swaziland if you should travel there.

There are network tests like of MyBroadband.za that currently shows MTN’s coverage and data speeds are concerned.

However, the MTN network has been improved a lot during the last few years. Currently, they have rivals with Vodacom for the highest spot.

In March 2018 the heavily promoted Mass SIM card launched. “South Africans now double-up their airtime and data bundles once recharging with MTN’s new Mass SIM for R 5 or more”. However, there are catches hooked up to double airtime and data.

Mass SIM is available only to new MTN prepaid customers, and the bonus airtime and data bundles are valid for only 24 hours once activated.

When it comes to customer satisfaction scores for wireless internet services, MTN literally falling behind its rivals

According to the customer reviews, MTN has some poorer service, it gets the lowest value for money score where Telkom,

Cell C and Vodacom were respectively first, second and third in terms of value for money.

Cell C

Cell C is the third operator in South Africa. It claims to cover 98 of the population, however still has a gap in inbound areas. Cell C started a price competition in 2011 by undercutting its rivals; however, most operators currently provide comparable worth plans. Moreover, Cell C is just cheaper once you use their confusing portfolio of bonuses.

Cell C used to roam on the Vodacom network outside areas of their own coverage for complimentary, however, this applied to 2G and 3G only, not to 4G/LTE. In 2018 Cell C declared it’s coming into an extensive roaming agreement with MTN so as to enhance Cell C’s own mobile network. The agreement will see MTN providing each 3G and 4G services to Cell C in areas wherever Cell C has chosen to buy coverage instead of self-build, primarily outside of the most metro areas.

Telkom

Telkom is a South African-based telecommunication company with the fourth network in the country. It entered the market in 2010 and was referred to as ‘8ta’ before, however, has been rebranded into Telkom. It offers all-time low rates for data in the country of any network operator whereas its coverage is a smaller amount too.

While it’s limited coverage, chiefly in the cities, it roams on the 2G and 3G networks of MTN, however not on MTN’s 4G/LTE. Thus create a network scan before purchase. Note that their own 3G is on 850 MHz rather than the same old 900 MHz in Africa. Moreover, Telkom’s 4G/LTE is on the rare TD-LTE 2300 megahertz (B 40) within the areas (when you turn to LTE).

LTE-A

If you’re traveling for work indefinitely, and data costs are simply chewing through your wallet, best look into Rain or Afrihost for their LTE-A offerings, that is essentially a ‘mobile fiber connection’ with unlimited data.

Rain offers free unlimited data for a particular amount of days for every contract type starting from 15 days free to 90 days free. From there, you merely buy the data used and don’t need to load bundles like that with Afrihost — wherever you’d need to purchase bundles. Every contract choice with Rain additionally includes a SIM card, a mobile dongle or a Huawei smartphone.

Check the mobile data provider ratings with their year-on-year move. (According to the MyBroadband’s network quality tests)

*UPDATE*

Cell C is still experiencing issus with TLS certificate incompatibility on the SBC platform affecting Wifi calling. Samsung has now pushed back the release of Oreo to S6 and S7 devices to the 31st of May and 22nd of June 2018 respectively.

Samsung keeps disappointing it’s users…

*UPDATE*

The past few weeks, especially if you use Wifi hotspot’s to use “Wifi Calling” and have a Samsung 6 or 7 series (as well as the J series), you would notice it not working anymore. The cause? Android oreo release date in South Africa has been confirmed and networks have been making ready!

It was revealed that this is because of the impending Android Oreo update being rolled out by Samsung. However, as usual, Samsung has dropped the ball and had to further push back the roll-out date.

The good news is, on Thursday, the 17th of May, Samsung will start releasing it’s Android Oreo updates to all the major networks, so those that does not have the S8 or S9, can benefit from the new security enhancements as well as features!

Good news, we’ve just been waiting since forever. Hopefully Samsung will start releasing updates more frequently, especially with security becoming more of a concern for everyday South Africans.

On Freedom Day, all South Africans will have access to free Wi-Fi data, courtesy of AlwaysOn.

If you connect to any of the 1 816 AlwaysOn hotspots, found at restaurants, hotels and airports, on 27 April, you won’t have to pay for it, provided you stick to the fair usage policy.

According to to MD, Hayden Lamberti: “At AlwaysOn, the focus has always been about pushing the boundaries and trying new things. Sure, things might not always work out how you plan, but nothing worth doing happens in your comfort zone,” He added: “It is for this very reason that AlwaysOn has decided to push the envelope and attempt what has never been done before in South Africa.”

If you consume a lot of multimedia content, you will be pleased to hear that Super Wi-Fi will also be available for free.

“Super WiFi Hotspots will give you the best Wi-Fi experience and are geared up for high definition quality and high volumes of use. With Super Wi-Fi you can watch videos, download apps and do all the cool things that need high speed connection, without draining your personal data”

Happy Freedom Day to everyone and enjoy the free data!

It’s been a long time coming. Landlines can be used to make collect call’s since the dawn of time, but what about cellphones? No problem, according to mtn and their new Pay4Me service!

Out of airtime and stuck on the road with a flat tire? Those “friends” of yours give you the boot and now you’re stuck in some odd club and all you want to do is go home but have no ways to phone someone?

No worries! You can just dial 127, input the number of the mtn subscriber that you want to call you back (collect) OR use the nifty USSD code: *127*<number to dial>#, and you’re set! The other person will then be able to accept or reject your request and then phone you back on their own airtime. Think of it as “Please Call Me” on super-charge!

The user accepting the calls on the other end can also whitelist your number to automatically accept incoming collect call’s from you by dialing *127# and following the prompts, that way your mom & dad (or even girlfriend or boyfriend) can automatically pay for the call when you need them the most! No more sending a million “Please Call Me” requests

I think this compares very well with Cell C’s ability to give credit on airtime charges and if your whole family is on MTN, very easy to stay in touch by getting that family member who always has airtime to cough up some cash for a quick chat

WhatsApp is said to announce a VOIP service to it’s users in the next few months, something that makes operators very edgy about losing money on voice-calls, since WhatsApp’s popularity has soured and have a huge number of users world-wide.

Mobile Operator Cell C announced today, that from the 19th of October, data used on WhatsApp would be free, even for Prepaid users on the Megabonus recharge scheme. This is a huge step in the right direction, but with the ailing network struggling to cope with user demand, adding VOIP onto the service might be the nail in the coffin for current Cell C users looking to jump ship.

Jo Dos Santos said operators need to innovate and embrace the change, one such company is mtn. Their data prices have significantly dropped in the last 2 years and there is no signs of stopping. mtn surely have embraced that their user-base now have access to smart phones, and they need data for those smart phones! Their yearly financial report shows at least 30% extra profit because of this mindset shift. However, both Vodacom and MTN have said before that they will charge you R12.50 per megabyte for VOIP services to protect their voice revenue. R12.50 per megabyte? Whereas it’s less than R0.30 now? Crazy

Only the future will tell if these big monopolistic companies will actually change as the technology changes and give us, the consumer, more power and choice.

Prepaid customers from Cell C will start to enjoy an added bonus whenever they recharge from today and will continue for the next 3 months. Your recharge value would triple. Pretty awesome… but there is “but”

Unfortunately I smell “promotion” which entirely negates the words from Jose Dos Santos (their CEO) that Cell C always provided South Africans with the best recharge rewards in the country. Why is it then a promotion with an expiry date dear sir?

Having said that, you would be able to choose to use your extra airtime with voice (Cell C to Cell C calls only), SMS or data, charged at 2.5 cents, 50 cents and R1 / MB respectively. Your added bonus expires 2 days after your initial recharge at midnight. This is one big caveat for those who recharge and use their airtime sparingly.

As an example, if you recharge R20, you get R40 extra value (totalling R60) to use as you please; provided you remember that only Cell C to Cell C calls are supported, much like the mtn promotions and deals.

MegaBonus… I guess Cell C prepaid subscribers will benefit from this regardless… until it expires
