Yemaso Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, established in 2011, quickly made a name for itself in the Northern California area with immediate team success in competition. Yemaso BJJ is the only team in Sacramento to win International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation team titles.  The team was founded by multiple time world champion, Marcos “Yemaso” Torregrosa.

Yemaso BJJ continues to gain notoriety in the competition scene as it continues to produce local, national, and international champions at all levels.

Team Yemaso BJJ is currently operating the main headquarters in Sacramento, CA, and has two satellite schools in Elk Grove and El Dorado Hills.

Yemaso BJJ continues to expand by adding newly affiliated Komainu Gym from Reno, Nevada to the team.

After vetting and considering several options, we decided Yemaso BJJ was the right fit for our gym. We love the communal and family atmosphere that Yemaso BJJ has instilled in its culture.

Yemaso Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu secures two submission victories in Fight to Win Pro 38

Fight to Win, an organization putting together professional grappling events similar to what you would see in a UFC event however exclusive to grappling, brought their exciting show to Sacramento, CA on Friday, June 30th.  The expectations were high due to the caliber of matches Fight to Win Pro organizes as well as the successes of both Marcos and Eliot.  Professor Marcos and Eliot have competed in several past Fight to Win events and done very well.  Both head instructors Marcos “Yemaso” Torregrosa and Eliot Kelly secured wins by submission.

The team has had a great year competitively earning two International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation team titles (which now marks six total team trophies).

Marcos “Yemaso” Torregrosa Wins by Armbar

Professor Marcos “Yemaso” Torregrosa came out and put on a display of the succinct efficiency of his game.  Marcos initiated the action by pulling guard.  After establishing his guard he quickly swept and passed using his familiar knee cut.  Once he passed he quickly worked to set up an armbar position – a familiar sequence for students at Yemaso BJJ that is often repeated on Saturday mornings.  Marcos was able to force his opponent to make a mistake which led to a combination submission of armbar by way of the triangle choke.

Marcos Competes at American Nationals

Not one to rest on his laurels, Marcos followed up his Fight to Win victory by competing at the American Nationals tournament in Las Vegas.  Marcos displayed the fruits of his labor by becoming a champion in both Gi and NoGi.

This weekend was also special because it marked the second time Marcos Sr. competed alongside his son Marcos Jr.   Further, this was the first time they competed together at one of the major IBJJF events.

Marcos shared the following sentiments regarding the experience:

Blessed to finish off the weekend with two GOLD medals.  I am healthy, happy, and am bringing home some hardware to share with my family at Yemaso BJJ, thank you guys for helping me prepare.  I work my butt off and am happy to be surrounded by such dedicated individuals.  Heading to grab some food and then watch my boy who fights his first national championship tomorrow.  Such a great feeling to bring ones child to these events and to share in the experience with them, I wish you all a similar experience as there is simply no word to describe how proud he makes me.  Win or lose, he will do his best and I will be proud.

Marcos jr. went out there and earned a bronze medal for his efforts at the competition.

First, and foremost, sports should develop better people.  Developing good athletes should always come second to human development.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, specifically, helps in the cultivation of:

• Confidence

These skills transcend the mat; they are character traits revered by society.  Additionally, society holds with high esteem an individual that can win with humility and lose with grace.  An exclusive aspect of training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the consistency of sparring as a means to apply lessons learned.  We have an opportunity, every time we train, to practice winning with humility and losing with grace.

At Yemaso BJJ, we specifically teach what respect looks like before, during, and after a sparring session.  In time, this respect grows into a heightened level of self-confidence and discipline.  For the parents of an energetic child, this cultivated respect and is welcomed with open arms.

1.  Your Child Will Have More Physical Activity

This is an obvious reason kids should do martial arts in this day and age – to get active and moving.  As great as our nation is, we have an epidemic in regards to obesity.  Children are not immune to the issue.  Youth sports and physical education programs are great, but many times fall short of the required activity to support strong and healthy development of children.  The martial arts offer many benefits, and the quest to martial arts mastery goes hand in hand with high levels of physical fitness.  Martial arts can help your child get fit and healthy in a supportive and familial environment.

2.  Your Child Will Improve Their Ability to Focus

While there are many benefits to the internet, there are many more benefits in stillness and silence.  Unfortunately, stillness and silence seem to be rare to find and the unbound access to the internet perpetuates the problem.  At some juncture in life, every one of us comes to learn that the greatest obstacle we face in this lifetime is ourselves.  That battle is fought in the stillness of our hearts and the willingness to confront ourselves.  As Bruce Lee pointed out, “behind the punches, kicks, and knees, a true martial artist learns to sit with himself and see where his weaknesses are.”

Through years of martial arts classes, you will remember many challenges, breakthroughs, and setbacks.  What you will not remember are distractions or gimmicks akin to your local health club.  In our academy, there is no loud music or flat screen TVs, just hard work and sweat equity.  As a martial artist, your child will learn what it is to be still, challenged and focused.

3. Your Child Will Become More Resilient

Part of life is learning that we all experience setbacks.  The key is in learning how best to deal with setbacks and the steps to take to keep moving forward.  This lesson seems to be lost on many in our every-kid-gets-a-trophy culture.  Respectfully, we believe in teaching kids that the outcome is not as important as the journey and how you adapt to a result.  In BJJ, your kid will learn to fail – a lot.

4. Your Child Will Develop Self-Respect

When you remember playing with the big kids it takes you back to those little reminders of humility – there is always someone who is bigger, stronger, and better than you.  The right martial arts school will teach your child that there are no tough guys.  Every martial artist ultimately learns this sense of respect and true confidence.  Your child will learn that confidence and respect for others comes from a deep sense of self-awareness.

5. Your Child Will Appreciate Their Minds AND Bodies

What they don’t teach you at your local health club is how to really listen to your body.  To listen to your body is to also see your thoughts and have heightened awareness of your emotional construct.  A martial artist is taught to see, feel and listen – both internally and externally. Tapping into intuition, fear and courage are examples of being able to put the physical together with mental.  Learning to control your nervous system in an event of acute stress is a skill that can be taught.  No one wants to be taken by surprise, yet, when faced with a fight, flight, or freeze situation, it is far better to have the training to aid your mind in making the right decision; martial arts is an excellent tool for front loading these responses.

We believe that any child can and will benefit from participation in martial arts.  Which specific martial art?  Well, if you ask us (bias notwithstanding), we suggest a martial art that is predominately grappling based.  We find that children have a natural affinity to rough house and wrestle around.  The point is to just get them moving and focused.  The key in choosing an instructor/academy is to do your due diligence when it comes to evaluating the integrity of the program.

Team Yemaso promoted three martial artists to the rank of black belt.  Although every martial artist’s journey is truly unique, it is generally accepted to expect ten years to achieve the highest ranking in the martial art of BJJ.

It is one of the most prestigious and exclusive groups in the entirety of the human experience.  And, this fall, we were truly lucky to witness the ascension of a new brown belt, three new black belts, and Professor Marcos’ third degree which marks his ninth year as a black belt.  The third degree on Marcos’ belt speaks to the adage that the journey never ends.

These four gentlemen are the men of the hour! I made the decision to promote men that I have known for the better part of my life. Mr Kiet Se, one of my original students in the Sacramento area, has earned his right to stand among the browns after many dedicated years. Coach Shawn Cox and Coach Al Ramirez, both having started with me many years before and following me in their paths at Team Yemaso having won numerous titles, have graduated to the big leagues! Rich Bothun becomes my 7th yet very first black belt graduated from blue all the way to black! Words fail to elaborate on the magnitude of influence these men have in my life. They have all LIVED their lives with me, sharing in social events, travel, children, and our beloved Jiu Jitsu. These men have worked so hard for this promotion. I congratulate them and feel so blessed to have amazing examples of what we are doing at Team Yemaso be such close friends.
