ROSEVILLE (CBS13) – A group of local high school students are trying to win some green by going green.

The students came up with a way to get rid of garbage on campus by using worms.

Move over jocks and cheerleaders.

“The worm’s kind of our mascot,” said senior Scott Burdick.

Four students at Woodcreek High School in Roseville are changing the world, one slimy worm at a time.

“They’re not as gross as you would think they are,” said one student.

These worms have an important job turning hundreds of pounds of school trash into compost.

“We just throw all the stuff and they do all the work for us,” a student said.

“This is one of the little things that we’re going to have to get used to if we want to keep our world the way it is,” said Burdick.

Their passion is now getting national attention. The Wigglers wiggled their way to the top team in California for the “Siemens’ We Can Change The World” challenge. The winner gets a $50,000 scholarship.

“We’re just a group of kids that really care about their environment,” said one student.

They saw a major problem.

“Right now about 55,000 tons of organic waste goes into the landfills,” said teacher Kendra Grinse.

So, they looked for a greener solution.

“We did this to teach people how easy it is,” said Grinse.

Get a plastic tub, put holes in it, and begin to fill it with organic trash.

“Leaves, grass, fruits and veggie scraps, old newspaper makes great bedding,” said Grinse.

Put in a hundred worms, keep it moist, and in just a few weeks you’ve got nice rich soil.

“Now you can solve a lot of environmental issues from reducing waste in the landfills to using less synthetic fertilizer,” said Grinse.

LODI (CbS13) – Investigators arrested three people, including a couple from Elk Grove who owned a business they allegedly tried to burn down.

Husband and wife Prem and Kelly Basuta apparently had no interest in talking as they face charges for allegedly charring their own business, Lodi’s Salisbury Market.

“It was like home, I spent a lot of time there, my wife helped me,” said former owner Bruce Salisbury.

To this day it’s Salisbury’s name that remains on the Basuta’s market the he founded close to 25 years ago, and sold it to the couple in 2005.

“Actually business was going good, and I thought now’s the time to get out, so I just put it up for sale,” said Salisbury.

From there customers say the business went downhill, and then on October 15, 2011, a fire broke out at the market, forcing it to close.

“Oh, well you smelled the smoke,” said Sharon Ceresa, employed in strip mall.

Those who work in the strip mall say the fire threatened more than just the grocery store.

“I think it’s really bad, because it does put all of us in jeopardy,” said Ceresa.

In fact, a Lodi firefighter was sent to the hospital fighting the blaze.

“I’m surprised, I really am. I thought they were good people and financially could take care of it,” said Salisbury.

ROSEVILLE (CBS13) – After three decades, a Roseville restaurant, once owned by a former San Francisco 49er football player is closing its doors.

Bunz and Company could not make it through this tough economy.

“He cooks. I wait tables, and tend bar,” said owner Julie Sweet.

Sweet and her husband are basically doing it all.

“Right now he’s working about 9 shifts a week and I’m working about 8,” said Sweet.

It’s a popular restaurant with good food.

“This has been an icon in Roseville for as long as most people can remember,” said Sweet. “If you want a Bunz burger, now is the time.”

Now they’re closing their doors for good.

“This has been our home, our children worked here. The economy just got to us,” said Sweet.

It’s a tearful goodbye as this business was gradually being forced to operate with less.

“The economy just got to us. We started out with 25 to 30 employees, were down to 10 now,” said Sweet.

One of those employees has been on staff for 28 years.

Madge, 83, is retiring after a good run with great people.

“We had a lot of nice people come and go here, football stars and basketball stars,” said Madge.

Bunz and Company was opened by Dan Bunz, a former football player with the 49ers back in the 1980s.

The restaurant opened in 1984, and in 1999, Julie and her husband took over the business.

“We just can’t do it anymore,” said Sweet.

Being an independent during these tough financial times has left them with no other choice.

“It’s really sad because this is our home,” said Sweet.

The Sweet’s are now looking for other restaurant manager jobs, something they’ve been doing since they were teenagers. And, what they’ve built in Roseville is hard to walk away from.

“We really had good times here,” said Sweet.

The restaurant’s last day is this Thursday.

COSUMNES (CBS13) – A local firefighter and his family survived when their Cessna plane crashed into a snow-covered mountain in blizzard conditions.

Brian Brown from Wilton and his family were on a flight to Mountain Home, Idaho, to visit their oldest daughter. Around 9 p.m. Saturday night, the Cessna 172 they were in crashed onto a steep forested slope in a remote part of Idaho.

“They were able to reach 911 on the cell phone in a remote location and the rescue effort was remarkable.” said Cosumnes Fire Department Fire Chief Tracey Hamsen.

More than 15 hours later, rescuers found the fireman, his wife and their daughter on a snow covered mountain. They survived the crash but suffer from head and back injuries.

“He’s grateful with their fortunate luck with the rescue,” said Hamsen.

A medical helicopter was the first to spot the wreckage, and officials say it is unclear what caused the small plane to go down. They say photos taken by rescuers show significant damage, including a broken windshield.

The Browns are listed in stable condition Sunday night and are expected to be released from the hospital in 2-3 days.

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – It’s that time of the year again where bug infestations are up, just as the barbeques are rolled out.

“When the temps get warmer, because bugs that are overwintering come out at that point and do most of their activity during the summer months,” said Home Team Pest Defense.

Home Team Pest Defense says there are several things you can do to get bug free zones.

“Keep your house free of herbage points, keep plants away from the house, make sure your leaves are clean year around. Those are the best tings you can do,” said Home Team Pest Defense.

Pesky pests hide in the cracks and clutter.

Several counties are seeing an unusually high incidence of wasp and spider infestations.

At a home in Rocklin, the team uses tools to help reach unnecessary cobwebs.

“It takes a little time, but if you do it right, you eliminate all those spider herbage points and their webs and their food source,” said Home Team Pest Defense.

As far as wasps, buzzing around your party, the team has a tip.

“In the [wasp] trap, it comes with a pheromone, cotton swap. If you run out of it, you can use rotted meat, stick it in, close it back up. The yellow jackets go in and die from dehydration,” said Home Team Pest Defense.

And, those old piles of outdoor rubbish and clutter also can be a pest danger zone.

One thing is for sure, bugs are a part of nature but that isn’t something your pest control guy can’t handle.

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – His mother’s boyfriend is accused of putting him in a bathtub filled with scalding hot water.

After spending the last 6 months at Shriner’s Hospital for Children, Armani is back home and his mother says he refuses to leave her side.

“Now that he’s with me, he doesn’t want me to leave his side at all,” said Desiree White.

It’s the moment Armani and his family have been waiting for.

Three-year-old Armani is walking, talking and enjoying being a kid again.

“He can ride a bike again and just being a 3-year-old Armani again,” said White.

After five months of surgeries and physical therapy, Armani is finally back home.

“He’s been doing such a great job through therapy that they decided to let him get out,” said White.

Back in December, Armani suffered third degree burns through his entire body after his mother’s boyfriend allegedly forced him to sit in hot water.

But Armani’s family says the dark past doesn’t seem to slow Armani down.

His strength, intelligence and love is what his family says got him through such a painful and difficult time.

“He has a strong will for life, he is a survivor,” said Carma Hamer.

A boy who couldn’t leave his hospital bed is now enjoying the simple things in life with the people who matter to him most.

It’s something his family says couldn’t have been possible without the support of Shriner’s Hospital for Children.

“All of them, I just want to thank all of them, cause without them, I don’t think I would get through this,” said White.

Armani has a lot to look forward to. He is going to celebrate his birthday on June 5, and his mother says he will enroll in school in the fall.
