Since Trish posts snippets of her WIPs on tumblr, I've been anticipating this release before the book deal was signed and it was known as All That Was Lost.

I remember reading something interesting about the male character in this book. The interesting thing being that Trish couldn't exactly reveal his name, but that it was either Alex or Connor and that there isn't a love triangle in the book. I'm curious to find out what that means plus how Callie deals with going to school for the first time, a father she doesn't know, the complexity of her relationship with her mother and what memories haunts her.

I sometimes wonder what my mother would say if she knew that her story—one of the saddest, sweetest love stories I've ever heard—was retold in a new way in my young adult novel, While He Was Away.

Now Sourcebooks Fire is sharing the story yet again, in a second, exclusive edition, released nation-wide at Walmart. The fact that Sourcebooks believed enough in While He Was Away to bring it to life the first time felt like a much-needed confirmation of years of hard work. The fact that they are standing behind my book again in this way . . . well, it feels like a miracle. I'm truly grateful.

I wonder what my mother would say to this incredible news? I like to think she would be grateful too. I like to think she would be happy. She wanted her story heard after all. So much so that it was one of the last things she told me, just before she died.

One rainy night when I was fourteen, right before cancer left her to ill to talk, let alone drive a car, my mother said, "Come with me. We're going shopping." We drove to the little local market and wandered up and down the aisles, as she threw in a can of tuna, some dishwashing soap, and other little things we didn't need. We paid for these little things. She looked anxious and tired, still she hadn't said a thing; we hadn't spoken a word.

It was only when we were parked in our driveway again that my mother said, "I was married once before when I was very young. He died a hero in WWII."

And that was that. Soon after, she died.

I thought about my mother's mysterious love story for many years. I talked to relatives, found long-lost photographs. The story took seed in me. It flowered into a novel about a young women whose boyfriend leaves for the Iraq War. In her loneliness, she seeks out a grandmother she's never met, whose first husband died in WWII. She seeks out a character inspired by mother.

A late night drive, a few words spoken in the dark. Even things as simple as this can inspire a novel.

I'm a fan of Tim Burton's films. I watch the Nightmare Before Christmas at least every year around Halloween habitually and thought since I enjoy his films that I would check out his writing, especially since the Nightmare Before Christmas started out as short story.

I have to admit I was a little disappointed when I got The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy & Other Stories and realized how many pages there were. There are the short stories that I'm use to and then these stories—which are better described as short poems. The first story has a total of 20 words (if you don't include the title), but once I started reading I throughly enjoyed them. Some of the stories are gloomy or funny and askew, while others are witty at first, but have a deeper meaning—which I didn't expect in such short stories. All of them are strange in that wonderful Tim Burton way. They also rhyme—which is something I haven't come across since I was a child and enjoyed. Each stories has a illustration drawn by him of the character–sometimes more than one–to go with it.

This book is a very quick, entertaining and sometimes macbre read. If you're fan of Tim Burton's movie and strange worlds, you'll definitely enjoy this.

What inspired Out of Reach?

I had just finished writing a really crappy SF novel and was so over it. I knew it wasn't working, but I had at least finished it and the prospect of reworking it seemed so overwhelming.

So I started with a clean page and Rachel's voice came loud and clear. I had been going through something similar to Rachel's journey for a couple of years, so I tried to channel some of that, but through the filter of a 16 year old girl.

Did you base any of your characters on yourself or others in your life?

I have a family member who struggled(es) with addiction, so even though it is a work of fiction, there is a great deal of emotional truth to the characters and story.

Are there any songs that could fit certain moments, the atmosphere or feel of Out of Reach? If so, which one would be the theme song?

I wrote most of it to The National, so I'd say their songs fit the atmosphere for sure.

What are your favourite novels?
This question is always so hard because it changes all the time. Currently they are The Hours, The Book Thief, The Things They Carried, The Road, The Alchemist…

Have you always wanted to be a writer? What do you like most about being a writer?

Yes, I have. I think for a long time though I was in love with the idea of being a writer. I romanticized it in my mind. I didn't have the discipline.
Now I love the process. I love seeing where a story goes and how characters change and grow.
It's scary and exhilarating to create.

What were your favourite and least favourite parts of the publishing process for your début novel?

My favourite part was getting the call that it was going to be sold. That was a surreal moment. I hung up the phone and screamed. Then I got real quiet and cried.

I've also loved working with a wonderful editor, Annette Pollert at Simon Pulse. She has helped take Out of Reach to the next level.

The least favourite part is worrying about the sales aspect. Quite a bit of time has to go to marketing, and the reason why that can be challenging is because it takes time away from writing the next book.

What advice would you give aspiring writers?

I love what Anne Lamott says: Sit butt in chair.

Are you currently working on anything? Can you share?

Today I worked on a story about a boy who is struggling with grief.

Is there a specific message you hope readers will take way from Out of Reach?

Many people have been touched by addiction in some way, and I want them to know that there is great courage and great love and great hope to be found.

The Beautiful and the Cursed involves gargoyle lore. The only thing I know about the lore is that gargoyles supposedly scared off and protected from any evil or harmful spirits. It's always great to read about something that doesn't come up in books often and I also love that the story is set in Paris. I imagine when people think about gargoyles, the most famous examples are those of Notre Dame. An old image of the Parisian cathedral is what first inspired the story and I can see why, especially at night. It looks like it would fit perfectly in a paranormal story.

I thoroughly enjoyed every page of My Life Next Door. I love being able to sense a difference between the Samantha we meet in the beginning and the one on the last page. The relationship between her and Jase is one of the most realistic I've read. It develops and doesn't just happen. Fitzpatrick writes a teenage relationship how it could honestly progress and not an edited version where they have the mind and feelings of someone their age, but don't feel genuine in certain aspects.

Like Samantha, I never saw the twist and difficult decision she has to face coming. Difficult doesn't begin to describe the situation and position she's put in, but then you find out that the major plot has a another twist of its own—raising the stakes that much more.

This debut is a touching and true story about more than first love that ably captures the teenage voice. It's proof that you don't need any supernatural elements to be completely riveted. I can't wait to read what Huntley Fitzpatrick has in store next.

I think fans of Katie McGarry's Pushing the Limits would enjoy this.

Today I'm participating in the cover reveal for Naturals, book two in the Lost Souls series—which will be released April 9, 2013 by Entangled Teen.

Colleen Clayton, author of What Happens Next to be released October 2012 by Poppy (Little, Brown Books for Young Readers) is giving away a query letter and first 10 pages critique.

Colleen has an MFA from the North East Ohio Consortium at Youngstown State University and now teaches there. YSU specializes in Young Adult, Middle Grade, and Children's literature and hosts the largest annual Young Adult English Festival in the nation. The English program is led by Gary Salvner (the current holder of the Ted Hipple ALAN Award). She studied fiction writing under Nebula-award nominee Christopher Barzak and women's fiction goddess Varley O'Connor. While she primarily writes contemporary YA, she is familiar with and has studied Historical Fiction, Gay/Lesbian Fiction, Science Fiction, Paranormal, and Genre-bending/blending fiction. Whether it is set in a suburb, an enchanted forest, or on the moon, a good story is a simply good story. Colleen can offer a quality, insightful critique on someone's opening manuscript pages and after writing a few query letters herself, she knows a thing or two about how to write one as well as what NOT to write.
