For beginners, getting into fitness can be intimidating and confusing. But it doesn't have to be that way. In fact, getting fit is one of the most straightforward tasks you'll attempt.
Fortunately, reaching your fitness or fat loss success goals requires only two things; discipline (that's up to you) and a set of simple guidelines (which I'm happy to provide).

First, you should arrange for a full physical examination from your physician.
This is mandatory for people that have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, or are obese.
Second, once you have your doctor's approval to begin a fitness program, you should schedule a fitness assessment with a health professional at your gym.
While both of these are incredibly annoying, they are essential to your success and well-being. The benefits of a doctor's visit are obvious, particularly if you have one or more of the previously mentioned conditions but it also allows you and your doctor to discuss your lifestyle. Preventative medicine is far better than reactive medicine. Make your doctor part of your fat loss and health-building team along with the health professionals at your gym.
The real benefits of the fitness assessment aren't finding out how much body fat you have or how many minutes you can last on the treadmill, but rather getting a better understanding of your strengths and weaknesses. If you want to avoid injury and actually achieve your goals this year, get to know your strengths and weaknesses.
The third secret to fat loss success is to walk, don't run.
If you want to pick up your University running workouts where you left them 10 years ago, that's fine. But I guarantee you won't last 10 days. And then it'll be a dreary 355 days until you're ready to try exercise again.
The hidden benefit of a good fitness assessment is that it will actually serve as a nice introductory workout to your return to fitness. It will buffer your delusions of fitness grandeur from the reality of what your body actually can do. After the fitness assessment teaches your body a lesson and awakens your muscles from their winter slumber, only then will you realize your limits that you must respect in subsequent workouts.
Goal-setting is the fourth secret to success (and not just in fitness, but in any area of life).
It is much more effective to commit to a set of specific short-term and long-term goals than it is to routinely hope for weight loss each year.
Set realistic goals and remember to train within your limits. If you are currently sedentary and haven't exercised in months (or years), don't begin an advanced training program. Start with a conservative beginner program. Your belly wasn't built in a day, and neither will be lost overnight.

Limit your initial workouts to 1 set per muscle group. In week 2, you should be ready to add another set. And if you want to build up to 3 sets, then do so in week 3. Slowly increase the weight and stay within your desired repetition range. At no time should you be too sore to function. And runners should also heed this advice. Too much running will guarantee shin splints in the early going. Avoid running on back to back days for the first two weeks and keep the distance short. Sore muscles are guaranteed when you lift. So keep the volume low.
And now for 2 more super secrets that will help keep you committed and consistent with your workouts and will finally help achieve fat loss success for good.
Five, build your social support team.
Social support is the #1 factor for success for women in fitness programs, and is important for men as well. Support can come from your spouse, brother or sister, child, mom or dad, friend, neighbor, co-worker, personal trainer, or lifestyle coach. Don't try to go it alone. People respond better when they report to a person instead of a machine.
A good nutrition program is the sixth most important factor for success in fat loss programs.

How many times will you hear a diet counselor tell you to cheat on your diet? Not often, but that may be the exact thing you need to help you learn lifetime healthy eating habits.
Flexibility means the difference between being able to stick it out long-term and giving up for good. Sometimes a little chocolate cheat can keep you from feeling utter desperation and deprivation.

Giving in for an hour is very different from giving up forever. When you give in and have a little taste of heaven, you're not giving up on your diet plan - you're being what Elastigirl recommended Mr. Incredible should be, a little "flexible". Does this mean you can give in 24 hours a day and consume as many calories as you feel like eating?
Not if you want to lose weight. But successful dieters understand the importance of having a little leeway to live life according to their own needs, and sometimes that includes something off limits.
It may not always be a psychological craving, either. Your body will alert you to deficiencies of certain vitamins and minerals. If you're dieting, your body may be lacking certain nutrients and making you crave foods is the only way it knows to get those nutrients back in its system.
Even if it's not a biological craving, giving in can also alleviate the tension you may feel about being on a diet in the first place. It's better to just vow to eat healthier and be fit, but in reality, fitness and weight loss plans are billed as "diets" and it instinctively gives us a negative connotation because we assume it means giving up our favorites.
Permission to Cheat On Your Diet
Worried that giving in occasionally will result in giving up permanently? That rarely happens for those who have given themselves permission in advance to have anything they want in moderation.
You don't have to feel disgust and shame in your decisions if you know ahead of time that it's okay. Not many official diet plans have a built in craving component. They simply say everything good is gone forever, so you may have to make some exceptions and tailor your plan on your own.
Conclusion
Your body will clue you in to the fact that it's in need of something you're not giving it. Sometimes it may be carbs, and even if you're on a no-carb diet, you have to make the decision as to whether or not you'll address your body's needs and give yourself permission to cheat on your diet just a little.
Regards,
Mark Hanson

uestion. Tom, do you think that the training intensity of your workout is "THE THING" that gives you results or is it more about being consistent with your workouts? The reason I ask is because I'm following your Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle nutrition program and I also just got a new high-intensity workout program called the Insanity series.
I like doing these workouts, but I'm having a hard time pushing myself that hard every day and I'm finding now that I'm starting to dread doing them. I have been doing these workouts only 2-3 times per week instead of the 5 times per week that is recommended in the program. This workout brings me to my knees. I've started questioning myself and wondering if it's even worth the torture.

nswer. Intensity is one of the most important training variables, and at times, you'll definitely want to train with high intensity to get maximum results in the shortest time. But the real answer to your question may depend on your goals, the shape you're in now and even your personality type.
Some things to consider:

Are you a beginner or already in shape and looking for the next challenge?
Do you like home bodyweight workouts or are you a gym and weights/ cardio machine type?
Are you the "hard-core" fitness nut type of person or do you simply want to get leaner and healthier, nothing crazy?
When you say you want "results", are you talking about fat loss, cardiovascular fitness improvement, muscle growth or all of the above?

With that in mind, let's answer the HOW MUCH INTENSITY question in the context of fat loss first.
I'm sure you can appreciate that people can lose weight while lying in a hospital bed. If someone is sick and can't keep food down, then there can be a significant calorie deficit even without exercise. That rules out high intensity training as an absolute prerequisite for weight loss. In fact, this simple example proves that exercise is not a requirement to lose weight at all.
Obviously, starving yourself is NOT the approach I recommend! My burn the fat program is based on the opposite: train more and feed the muscle and fuel the training. I'm simply making the point that it's NOT intensity PER SE or even ANY type of particular workout that creates the fat loss, IT'S THE CALORIE DEFICIT!

To burn fat, focus on establishing and maintaining a calorie deficit.
To increase speed of fat loss, focus on increasing the size of the calorie deficit.

Calorie deficit = fat loss is a liberating concept because it makes you realize you have endless options for achieving your fat loss goal using all kinds of different combinations of nutrition and exercise. Furthermore, none of the workouts have to beat you into submission to achieve a calorie deficit, especially if you work diligently on the nutrition side of the equation.

Countless thousands of people have achieved their goal weight with walking (low intensity exercise) as their only cardio. They chose walking because that's what suited their needs and their personality.
Here's where intensity comes in:
From a bodyfat loss perspective, using higher intensity training makes the workout more EFFICIENT. The higher the intensity, the more calories you burn. The more calories you burn, the more fat you lose, if all else remains equal (ie, if you don't compensate by eating more).
Some trainers claim that low intensity steady-state exercise is "ineffective" or even "totally worthless."
THIS IS TOTALLY FALSE!
Low intensity training is not ineffective, it's simply less efficient. For example, it takes a lot of time walking to burn enough calories to put a major dent in your fat stores. If you were to increase the intensity of your cardio, you'd burn more calories in less time and you'd drop the fat faster. You'd also be improving time efficiency by achieving a calorie deficit with less time investment.
But think about this: If that high intensity workout made you start to dread it,</itunes:summary>

It's not easy to consistently follow a healthy eating plan. Life comes at us so fast we sometimes let important things slide.
Maintaining healthy eating while traveling may be the most difficult thing of all to pull off because fast food restaurants beckon us to pull over to quickly satisfy our hunger pains.
I am no stranger to maintaining a healthy diet plan while traveling because I'm on the road so much.
My clients and readers frequently ask me, "Isabel, I'm always on the go, how can I stick to my healthy eating plan and still live my life?"
If your days really have you running around from work, to parties, to picking up kids all over the neighborhood, here are a few strategies that really do work.

1. Make your trunk your refrigerator.
Ok, not literally, but I have known many people (including myself) to keep a small cooler in their trunk at all times. They fill it with healthy goodies at the beginning of the day (raw nuts, fresh fruits and veggies, even hard boiled eggs) along with some ice packs and extra Tupperware (just in case) and they're off for the day.
At the end of the day, they empty whatever is left and the ice packs go back in the freezer for the next day. This is also a great way to keep your water bottles nice and cold and not warm from the car heat.
2. Make your supermarket your Fast Food stop.
Instead of a quick trip through the drive-thru, run into the local supermarket and pick up an assortment of dried or fresh fruits, healthy trail mixes, fresh veggies and natural peanut or almond butter. Most supermarkets now have wonderful salad bars and prepared foods like grilled chicken and salmon (better than any fast food joint) and healthy sandwich options (be careful with certain condiments like mayo that may be added).
Eliminate the fast food joints from your choices of 'quick stops" and look for the hot spots in town that offer healthier options.
3. Be the bearer of good food.
When going to a barbecue or social event, always offer to bring something (now I sound like the etiquette police). I always bring something and that something is always healthy. I know, if nothing else, at least I've got that to eat (although all of my friends and family know why I do this.
Even if you contribute the healthy and lean beef burgers or turkey burgers, this may deter you from the not-so healthy hot dogs and sausages. Or how about a colorful salad or fruit salad?
4. Find the healthy places all over the world.
Before I go on any trip, I go online and find the closest Whole Foods or Health Food Store. If there are none close by, I find a major supermarket. This doesn't mean I don't enjoy myself on vacation (like the Key Lime Pie I enjoyed down South) or when visiting family and friends, but I make sure that all healthy principles do NOT go out the window. I keep it healthy and have a great time! (not one or the other)
Conclusion
There are always great ways to continue eating healthy while traveling to maintain your healthy weight loss plans even if life is coming at you at seventy miles per hour!

If you don't know how to properly judge your weight loss progress from a particular exercise or nutrition regimen, you're probably not going to be very successful.
It's just like in sports...you have to know the score if you want to know who wins the game. So in our fat loss and fitness efforts, we have to know our body's score if we want to know if we're winning, or in this case, losing.

Don't be a Bathroom Scale Slave
I've found that a big mistake a lot of people make in judging their fat loss progress in the pursuit of a fit body is to be a slave to the scale. The scale is a useful tool, no doubt, but I've seen far too many people stop doing the right things (like proper weight training) just because they gained a pound on the scale.
But you can't blame yourself if you've been in this mode before...for years most of us were taught to watch the scale carefully when measuring if we did or did not burn fat. But your body can fluctuate a few pounds up or down at different times of the day, every day. This doesn't mean you've burned or gained fat, so following the scale can play games with your mind.
Losing Weight and Lean Muscle Gain
Another big problem with using the scale as your sole judge of progress has become clear with many people adding lean muscle to their bodies recently.
Muscle weighs more than fat, so let's say you been following a properly conducted resistance training routine for the past few months. You've gotten stronger and you've also added muscle to your body. If you're adding pounds of lean muscle to your body, you might see an up-tick in what the scale says. But assuming you're not gaining fat weight, it's a good thing. It's not about weight loss, it's about fat loss.
More muscle means more calories devoted to building that muscle and keeping it alive. It also means your metabolism will get faster and become more efficient at burning fat. You'll see that number on the scale drop soon enough, as the new muscle has created a calorie deficit in your daily food intake.
Weight Loss Progress and Body Fat
What we really should be looking at here is body fat percentage, or how much your total weight is made up of body fat. Most men will be more than happy with their bodies when they get into the 12-15% range, and most women will be satisfied with a fat percentage of around 16-20. So go out and get a skin caliper, which is fairly inexpensive, or another measurement device so you can keep track of your relative body fat percentage. If it's going down, keep doing what you're doing, and don't even look at that scale!
The Bathroom Mirror as a Fat Loss Tool...
Another tool I recommend using when judging your fat loss progress is the tried and true mirror in your bathroom. Now, this may sound simple, but use the mirror to judge your fat loss and muscle gain.
Combined with liberal use of your scale and keeping tabs on your body fat percentage, your mirror will provide all you'll need to judge your progress. The great thing about the mirror is that you'll get great motivation from seeing your body change right before your eyes, and it will spur you on to even further progress!
Weight Loss Progress and Realistic Expectations
The other important aspect of judging your fat loss progress is creating realistic expectations of your new body. As I teach my Fat Burning Furnace students, our friends in the fitness industry often use the genetically superior to advertise their products and programs, and this can easily deceive you subconsciously into thinking all you have to do is follow their advice to look like the cover boy or girl.
Well, I'm here to tell you that even if you have the most efficient plan or program, you still may never look like your favorite physique superstar or model.
Physical Characteristics and Genetic Inheritance
Research tells us that we are a product of our genetic inheritance. We all have our own inherited physical characteristics. For instance,</itunes:summary>

A home exercise program doesn't need to become tedious or boring. Those are the main reasons why people quit working out at home. Since physical exercise is so healthy for the mind and body, you should choose to become a little creative in setting up your home exercise routine to prevent boredom from ever kicking in.
Some people work best keeping an exercise program where they do the same exercises at the same time all of the time, but most people have other things going on in their lives and they can't exercise at the exact same time every day. Plus, most lose interest doing the same exercises day after day.

Home Exercise Programs and Personal Trainers
Having a personal trainer can be beneficial, but they're not for everyone. A lot of people start to resent having to check in with a trainer and having to stick with a routine all of the time. Life happens and you can't always rush off to the gym to meet up with your trainer.
Trainers are good motivators, but when you think about it, why spend the money when you get just as much motivation from your spouse, friends or even your children? They're actually the best motivators you can find because they don't charge you anything for their services except maybe a smile or a hug.

Home Exercise Programs Are Convenient
You can get along just fine doing your own home exercise program. It can be done whenever you have time to spare and you don't have to answer to anyone but yourself.
You can watch your favorite television shows or a movie while you exercise. Reading a good book while riding a stationary bicycle is especially beneficial. Another helpful tip is to exercise for short periods of time throughout the day instead of sticking to one long 45-minute workout.
You can work in your own home exercise program by mixing it with your regular daily activities.

walk or bike to work instead of drive
walk to the local store for those couple of items you need
ride your bike to the post office

Working out at home allows you more flexibility in mixing up your exercise program. It's very important to remember that you'll quickly lose interest in any exercise program if you do the same exercises all of the time. By mixing them up and changing the routine frequently, you'll start to look forward to exercising every day.
An added benefit of a home exercise program is that there aren't any lines to stand in to use the equipment at the gym, no putting up with the crowds, less noise and no embarrassment of working out in front of others.
Exercising at home is less stressful because you can exercise whenever you want and use whatever equipment you want. If setting up a routine with a gym or an exercise trainer is what you need, that's fine -- but most people need something more flexible to their time.
Conclusion
Exercising at home enables you to get the exercise you need when your schedule allows. You're more likely to stick with this kind of routine than one that's stricter on you.
Drop the gyms and trainers. Create your own home exercise program and exercise in your own home gym. You'll be happier if you become your own personal trainer in your world of fitness.

Fast fat loss doesn't have to be as hard as you think.
Just ask my most recent house guest, who easily lost 5 lbs in 5 days after staying with me for just a few days.
Did I torture my guest with boring food in an effort to help him lose weight? No not at all. I can promise you one thing, I definitely did not starve the guy.
We ate some super delicious meals and I made sure to cook him up some of my all time favorites:

Grass Fed Bacon and Scrambled Eggs on Spelt tortillas
Taco seasoned Buffalo ground beef on lettuce and tomato with shredded, raw cheddar cheese
Isabel's Special Baked Chicken, garlic broccoli and brown rice flavored with butter.

Even he was shocked when he thought about how hearty and tasty all of our meals were and how he was still able to drop a few pounds during his short stay. Something that doesn't normally happen on vacation, right?
It really goes to show that the right foods will prove results every single time!
Even if you feel like you are having a hard time sticking to your meal plans 100%, just make sure that you stick to your recommended foods. That, in itself, is a huge step in the right direction and, like my good friend here, has proved to be just the jumpstart many people have needed.
What are the right foods?
Always think NATURAL.
Always think NATURAL. If it was provided by Mother Nature herself, chances are its a great addition to your meal plan: natural meats and poultry, wild fish, raw nuts, fruits and veggies are just a few examples of the incredible fat burning foods Mother Nature has provided. Make these foods the greater percentage of your meal plans and you will be well on your way to losing those unwanted pounds (without having to come sleep over at my house. ;-)
Get started on your own healthy and fast fat loss meal plans right away.

The majority of exercisers today still rely on long duration moderate paced aerobic exercise as their primary fat burning exercise routine. They believe it will burn fat fast. But recent studies have shown that this is a big, I mean big mistake.
In fact, you could say that the whole aerobics explosion of a few decades past was one of the biggest mistakes in the health and fitness industry. Why?
There are several reasons, but I'll focus on the two main issues here.

Is Burning Fat While Exercising Good or Bad?
When you exercise at a moderate pace for extended periods of time (as in the typically recommended percent of your target heart rate), your body is burning fat during the exercise. While this may sound good, it's actually bad news.
This sends a signal to your body to keep a certain amount of stored fat available for your next workout. You're essentially telling it that it needs fat available to burn, because you'll be doing this exercise again. So while we may be burning some calories during this exercise, after the exercise is over, our body begins storing up some fat for the next workout. Obviously not what we're looking for in terms of maximum ability to burn fat fast.
The Inefficiencies of Moderately Paced Aerobic Exercise
The other big concern with moderately paced aerobic exercise performed several times per week is that it trains your body (heart, lungs, muscles, etc.) to become efficient. Again, this may sound good, but what is actually happening is bad for long term health. You are working only within your existing aerobic limits, without improving your aerobic capacity.
This is important because your aerobic capacity is what determines how your body responds in times of physical, emotional, and mental stress. If you reduce your capacity for work, as you do in this type of exercise, you're reducing your long term health, no to mention a poor chance of burning fat.
Effective High Intensity Workouts
The good news is, you can reverse these effects by instead focusing your workouts on high intensity resistance training, with workouts that last 15-20 minutes on average, and can only be performed 2-3 times per week.
These workouts will burn carbohydrates instead of fat during the workout, and will cause your body to use its fat stores to replenish the burned carbs over the next 24 hours, after the workout is done! This type of work will also increase your reserve capacity and thus your ability to handle all types of stress, leading to lasting health and fitness...and 24/7 fat burning. Nice!
Perform Exercises Correctly
But the exercise must be performed correctly to be effective, and that means using sufficient intensity, and keeping your rest periods between exercises and sets down to 60 seconds or less.
The students of my Fat Burning Furnace method know this, and are reaping the benefits. When you think about how little time you have to spend compared to the typically recommended methods to get these fat burning and health creating results, it's almost magical.

Some of you have been fighting the diet battle for years, and you are worried that once again, your willpower won't have enough fuel or horsepower to get you to the diet plan finish line. You fear that your motivation will conk out long before you achieve your weight loss goals.
It would be a practical impossibility to count how many diet plans have come and gone over the years. All the books and magazine articles printed on the subject would sink the proverbial battleship. With so many choices vying for your attention what's the best way to go about choosing a good one?
Whether you're a first time dieter or one who has been around the diet track twenty times, you'll be happy to know that it's possible to pick a plan and stick to it until you get to the perfect weight you want to be at.

Choose a diet plan that's not too strict for you.
You know the kind -- some have special limits on carbs, protein, or anything that's the color white. The people who lose weight long-term have to learn to live in a world where nothing is off-limits. But do remember, moderation is the key.
On Again, Off Again Diet Plans
Other diets have plans where you're supposed to start the diet for awhile, then stop, then start again, only to stop again, until the weight comes off. Expect your body to get fed up pretty quick with a diet like that and start sending you some unhealthy warning messages.
On and off diets send you into highs and lows emotionally and physically as your body tries to adjust to this pedal to the metal then slam on the brakes approach.
Lifetime Diet Plans
Instead, try to find a plan that shows you how to eat healthy for a lifetime. If you know it's okay to occasionally have special treats, or indulge in a glass of wine, then you won't have to go from one end of the spectrum to the other -- you'll be on a balanced course that's healthy for your body and easy on your emotions.
Fasting and Binge Style Diets
Fasting and bingeing (even on healthy foods) is a sure way to develop poor eating habits and it can confuse your body because it's being fed mixed messages. One minute you're devouring pound after pound of fresh fruit and vegetables, lean protein, and carbs -- and the next you're surviving on nothing but hot water with honey and red pepper mixed in.
Before you choose any diet, consider whether you could do it for a lifetime.
Could you exist without ever eating another morsel of sugar again in this lifetime? Be perfectly honest about this one. No? Then skip the sugar free diets.
Could you turn away bread at every meal for the next thirty years? If your answer is no then that diet plan won't suit your needs.
Remember, some diets make it seem like their rigid plan is one you could adhere to forever, but... What if it isn't? Caving in to a craving and violating the rigid diet plan's commandments will only depress and discourage you and cause you to binge the weight back on you lost and then some.
Don't Expect Weight Loss to be Comfortable
No diet plan is 100% comfortable, especially when you're used to to eating with complete freedom. Still, there are many plans that offer sensible ways to eat where you never have to leave an entire food group off of your plate.
Conclusion...
The perfect diet plan is one that you can follow for a lifetime, that's not too strict, and allows you to cheat once in awhile so you don't go crazy with cravings.
There are plenty of diet plans out there that follow this recipe and plenty that don't. A little detective work on your part can save you a lot of headaches and discouragement by revealing whether the diet plan will work for you before you even try it.
