uestion. Tom you once wrote: 'Who better to model than bodybuilders and fitness competitors? No athletes in the world get as lean as quickly as bodybuilders and fitness competitors. The transformations they undergo in the 12 weeks prior to competition would boggle your mind!'
Only ultra-endurance athletes come close in terms of low body fat levels, but endurance athletes like triathletes and marathoners often get lean at the expense of chewing up much of their lean muscle." There seems to be a contradiction unless I'm missing something.
Why do bodybuilders and fitness competitors have to go through a 12 week 'transformation' prior to every event instead of staying 'lean and mean' all the time? If they practice the secrets revealed in your book 'Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle', shouldn't they be staying in great shape all the time instead of having to work at losing fat prior to every competitive event?"

nswer. There's a logical explanation for why bodybuilders and other physique athletes (fitness and figure competitors), don't remain completely ripped all year round, and it's the very reason they are able to get so ripped on the day of a contest.
You can't hold a peak forever or it's not a "peak", right? What's the definition of a peak? It's a high point surrounded by two lower points. Therefore, any shape you can stay in all year round is NOT your "peak" condition.
Nutrition and Training: The Intelligent Approach
The intelligent approach to nutrition and training (which almost all bodybuilders and figure competitors use), is to train and diet in a seasonal or cyclical fashion and build up to a peak, then ease off to a maintenance or growth phase.
I'm NOT talking about bulking up and getting fat and out of shape every year, then dieting it all off again. What I'm talking about is going from good shape to great shape, then easing back off to good shape...but never getting "totally out of shape."
Makes a lot of sense, doesn't it? Here's an example:
I have no intentions whatsoever of walking around 365 days a year at 4% body fat like I appear in the photos on this page. Truth be told, that is day of contest condition.
Off-season (when I'm not competing), my body fat is usually between 8 - 10%. Mind you, that's very lean and still single digit body fat. I don't stray too far from competition shape, but I don't maintain contest shape all the time. It takes me about 10-12 weeks or so to gradually drop from 9% to 3.5%-4.0% body fat to "peak" for competition with NO loss of lean body mass, using the same techniques I reveal in my e-book.
It would be almost impossible to maintain 4% body fat, and even if I could, why would I want to? For the few weeks prior to competition I'm so depleted, ripped, and even "drawn" in the face, that complete strangers walk up and offer to feed me.
Okay, so I'm just kidding about that, but let's just say being "being ripped to shreds" isn't a desirable condition to maintain because it takes such a monumental effort to get there.
Low Body Fat Levels Can Be Unhealthy
It's probably not even healthy to try forcing yourself to maintain extreme low body fat levels. Unless you're a natural "ectomorph" (skinny, fast metabolism body type), your body will fight you and you'll always be hungry.
Not only that, anabolic hormones may drop and sometimes your immune system is affected as well (and I hate to say this, but sometimes - for some people - even the, "reproductive functions" decline a bit when you're that lean).
Hey, I'm just being honest. It's just not "normal" to walk around all the time with literally NO subcutaneous body fat.
Cycling Body Fat Levels
Instead of attempting to hold the peak, I cycle back into a less demanding off-season program and avoid creeping beyond 9.9% body fat. Some years I've stayed leaner - like 6-7%, (which takes effort),</itunes:summary>

One of the biggest myths in fitness is that you have to maintain a certain heart rate in order to lose fat or that there is a perfect heart rate for weight loss number. But that's just not true. Unfortunately, this myth has led to a lot of low-intensity training and therefore, a lot of failed fat loss programs.
The quicker you stop concerning yourself with the "high heart rate equals the best workout" mentality, the quicker you will start to change your body and lose weight.

Turbulence Training - Better Than Measuring Heart Rate For Weight Loss
In the Turbulence Training workouts that I recommend, you are going to burn more fat and more calories when you are OUT of the gym because of the high-intensity muscle blasting training methods that you will use. Not because your heart rate increases during the workout (even though your heart rate will be up there from the supersets and intervals) or you reach some magical heart rate for weight loss number. There isn't such a number!
Yes, your heart beat will increase during any type of exercise, whether aerobic or weight lifting, but it's the use of your bodies muscles that actually burn fat. And the harder you work those muscles the more fat you will burn and weight you will lose.
Lifting Heavier Weights Increases Calorie Burning
In the last 10 years, research has shown us two very important things about exercising for fat loss. First, lifting heavier weights leads to burning more calories after the workout when compared to lifting light weights. So that's why 8 repetitions per set is better than 12 reps per set. And that's one of the foundations of Turbulence Training.
Is Interval Training Superior to Slow Cardio?
And the second thing we have learned is that interval training is superior to slow, steady cardio for fat loss and post-exercise calorie burning. So it's more effective and more efficient to use short high-intensity interval training workouts instead of slow, long cardio sessions. High intensity workouts are the only workouts that qualify as a fat loss workout.
When Do You Need to Know Your Heart Rate?
The only time you might need to know your heart rate is during the recovery period of the interval training. It's important to take enough time between intervals so that your heart rate drops significantly (let it drop to less than 60% of your maximum heart rate).
That way you get more work done when it counts. You don't want to start your next high-intensity interval too soon, nor do you want to exercise too hard during your recovery interval.
All of these details are provided in the interval guidelines in the Turbulence Training e-book. And I'll show you how to properly structure your intervals so that you have enough recovery between each. That way, you don't have to worry about monitoring your heart rate or anything fancy. Just follow my instructions.
So the bottom line:
Don't worry about your heart rate during exercise (unless you like to keep track for interest sake). Instead, make sure that you are working at a high-intensity during each lifting and interval session.
The Turbulence Training workout guidelines will give you all the details you need on the specific rest periods to use between supersets and intervals.
There is a better way to train.

Mike Geary, author of best selling book "Truth About Abs" experimented with intense overeating on himself. He wanted to answer the question of what would happen if he overate nutritious food.
"I wanted to see if I could actually GAIN unwanted body fat by eating as much food as I wanted for six weeks straight. My theory was that if you eat the right types of food and don't stray from those foods, the body will automatically rebalance itself, even though you're attempting to overeat.

I couldn't just eat any and all types of foods... I would overeat on as much food as I wanted, but ONLY the foods that are "approved" according to my rules (the same rules Isabel teaches in The Diet Solution Program).
You're not going to believe what happened.
The end result after 6 weeks of trying to stuff my face with as much healthy food as possible: My body weight stayed EXACTLY the same! I didn't gain a single pound.
I know the first reaction of many people is that I just must have a "fast metabolism" or something along those lines and that's why I didn't gain weight - But that is false!
The truth is that I have no problem at all gaining weight when I overeat on junk food or processed food in general. I can guarantee you that if I was overeating on those foods during the 6 weeks, I would have gained a massive amount of weight.
In fact, in the past I've easily gained as much as 10 lbs in only 1 week when I've been on some sort of vacation and simply ate the normal types of processed foods that everyone else was eating.
This proves that I'm just as prone to gaining weight as anybody else. Eating nutrient dense foods forces the body to readjust, just like I theorized. Not only that, but this is the type of eating that pretty much totally eliminates cravings.
You just cannot get fat when you make the right food choices and you just can't help but burn fat off your body when you make the same great food choices. As I've mentioned before, I think one of the programs that gives some of the best guidelines for eating healthy and truly enjoying your food for lifelong success is Isabel De Los Rios' program - The Diet Solution.

It's easy to forget the importance of everything we put into our bodies. While you can't always eat a completely balanced diet, you can reduce your stress levels simply by choosing stress-fighting foods.
Since everyone is different, some stress-relieving foods might work for you while others may not. Your best bet will be to try them all and then incorporate the ones that work for you into your regular diet.

Here are some foods that can help alleviate your stress:
1.	Green Leafy Vegetables. Leafy greens contain a lot of magnesium. Magnesium is an important mineral that has the power to relax muscles.
2.	Fish Oil. Fish oil contains essential fatty acids that help with serotonin uptake in the brain. Serotonin makes you feel good mentally and enables your brain to better cope with stress. You can get your fish oil from certain kinds of fish, such as salmon, or from supplements.
3.	Milk. There is a reason that milk is sometimes referred to as a "wind down" food. The proteins in milk can help reduce anxiety while the calcium is another mineral that can help with muscle relaxation.
4.	Chocolate. A small piece of dark chocolate each day can actually provide you with many health benefits. Chocolate has a stimulating effect. The caffeine also helps to increase serotonin. It's okay to indulge in chocolate in small amounts!
5.	Red Wine. Many experts believe that a glass of red wine each day provides health benefits. The only drawback is that it's easy to overdo it when drinking alcoholic beverages. Wine is packed with beneficial antioxidants and can temporarily lower blood pressure and help you relax.
6.	Oatmeal. Oatmeal and other carbohydrates also help increase serotonin levels in the brain. In fact, your brain needs carbohydrates in order to function normally. This is why it's essential to include good carbohydrates like oatmeal in your regular diet.
7.	Lean Meats. Lean meats can help you combat stress by providing a good source of protein. Turkey, eggs, chicken and fish are all good choices because they contain necessary amino acids for healthy brain function. Remember not to eat fatty meats because the fat can interfere with proper digestion of the amino acids.
8.	Coffee. Yes, caffeine is a stimulant and there is also a risk of developing an unhealthy habit. However, moderation is the key. Coffee can help stimulate the brain into working with more energy and efficiency, helping you feel more motivated and less stressed.
9.	Nuts. Nuts help you maintain your proper blood sugar. They also contain plenty of the vitamin B complex, which combats fatigue.
10.	Spinach. Spinach is one of the world's super foods. It contains many vitamins, antioxidants and omega 3's. This means it would be hard to eat spinach and not feel good!
Vitamins & Supplements
Of course, it's always best to get your nutrients from the natural source. If this isn't possible, or if you can't stomach a certain food, it's best to look for vitamin supplements so you can still derive some benefits from it.
Vitamin supplements help your body get the nutrients it might be missing. Once you start consuming these necessary nutrients, you'll be on your way to feeling healthier and stress-free.
To Your Good Health,

uestion. I've been doing "Body for Life" for the past year, and did well at first, losing 3 dress sizes and 5% body fat, but then I hit a plateau and have had no more results since December. I'm wondering if I've been strict enough with my eating.
I bought your ebook, Burn The Fat, Feed the Muscle, and I'm very excited about the information I've read so far, but I need some clarification about the eating part.
I've been eating according to the BFL philosophy with one "cheat" day per week. What I'm reading in your Burn The Fat program is instead, to allow myself a couple of "cheat" meals any time during the week or on the weekend, but not to take an entire day off the program.
However, in your list of foods that turn to fat, you mention that certain foods should only be eaten very rarely. Does that mean that they shouldn't even be eaten at a weekly cheat meal? I can live with that, but then, what constitutes a "cheat" meal, (for example, if my favorite hash browns aren't allowed? :-)

nswer. It's not productive in the long term to totally deprive yourself of foods you enjoy. What you have to do is find a sensible way to work even your most "sinful" favorite foods into your diet, but do it in an amount and frequency that doesn't set you back or sabotage your progress. This can be done by allowing yourself some "cheat meals" (some people call them "free meals" or "reward meals.")
One really good way to look at the "cheat meals" concept is in terms of "compliance," which means, what percentage of your meals are following the guidelines of the program and what percentage are off the program.
Too Much of A Good Thing
Too many meals or days off the program and your results are compromised. Too many days in a row eating nothing but "rabbit food" and you go crazy with cravings, right?
How much you need to comply (stick with) your program varies from person to person. It depends a lot on how ambitious your goals are and on how responsive your body is to nutrition and exercise.
When making your decision, keep in mind we all have different genetics and body types, which is something I discuss in great detail in chapter 5 of Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle (www.burnthefat.com).
What Body Type Are You?
Are you a carb-tolerant mesomorph who gains muscle easily and loses fat easily or are you a carb-sensitive endomorph who gains fat easily? Depending on the answer, your diet program may need to be more or less strict than others.
Don't compare yourself to others - you have to get to know your own body type. Some people can "Get away with" more cheat meals and still make progress (Yeah, I hate them too!)
Unless you're a competitor in physique sports like bodybuilding, fitness or figure, or you're getting ready for some type of transformation challenge or photo shoot, I suggest at least 90% compliance.
Diet Compliance Percentage
Whether you adjust your level of compliance above 90% (get more "strict") or below 90% (get more lenient), depends how far away or close you are from achieving your goals, and most importantly, on what kind of results you're getting each week.
If you're complying 90% of the time, and you are getting awesome results, you don't have to change a thing, and you may be able to loosen up your diet a little. I know some people who are definitely only "on the program" 80% or 85% of the time and they look great.
90% compliance means you are following healthy nutritious, fat burning eating guidelines 9 meals out of 10. If you're eating small frequent meals like the burn the fat program suggests, that's 5 small meals a day X 7 days a week = 35 meals. 90% compliance means about 31-32 of those meals are spot-on! The other 3 or 4 are for you to enjoy special occasions, reward yourself, and live a little.
What Are Your Weight Loss Goals?
If you're like most people,</itunes:summary>

If you don't have variety in your program, you are more than likely to end up at a fat loss plateau soon rather than later. Variety is one of the keys to keeping that fat loss coming.
So not only should you have variety within your training week (i.e. alternate between two different interval training workouts, rather than just doing the same interval workout each time), but you should also change these workouts every 4 weeks.

So you need to change your training program every 4 weeks. To modify your interval training workouts, you can...

switch exercise methods (and even use bodyweight exercises for intervals)
increase or decrease the length of the interval (while decreasing or increasing the intensity, respectively)
increase or decrease the number of intervals per workout
increase or decrease the rest time between intervals

First, let's take a look at the interval methods.
Here is my list of preferred ways to do your intervals, ranked in order from best to worst, based on my experiences...

Sprinting outdoors (and hills might be the absolute best)
Strongman movements (Farmer's walks, tire flips, car pushing)
  Bodyweight interval circuits
  Treadmill running
  Stationary cycle (upright preferred)
  Stairclimber
  Rower
Swimming (only works for competent swimmers)
  Elliptical and Crosstrainer machines

Okay, so how long should you do intervals and how the heck do you do bodyweight exercises as interval training?
First, I stand by what I said in The Best Cardio Intervals for Fat Loss Part 1. There does not seem to be a "best" interval training program. But that is good because it allows us to use variety in our approach. (So perhaps the best interval training method is simply the one that changes every 4 weeks.)
Interval recommendations have ranged from 15 seconds (from Muscle Media waaaay back in the late 90's), to 5 minutes (these are known as aerobic intervals). So let's take a look at each interval recommendation and all those in between.
15 seconds
The great thing about 15 second intervals is that you'll be able to work at a very high rate (almost near your maximum power output), as long as you get adequate recovery between work intervals. The downside is that it is very difficult to do 15 second intervals on machines, because it takes a long time to "build up" and "bring down" the machine settings to the correct speed.
If you decide to use these short, high-intensity intervals, you should do so only if you already have an above average level of fitness. Your rest interval should be at least 15 seconds long, and can be as long as 60 seconds. The longer you rest, the harder you will be able to exercise in each interval.
20 seconds on, 10 seconds off
This method is known as the Tabata protocol, after the Japanese scientist that published a study on this routine. It is very demanding (obviously), and while some trainers have suggested this is the best method for interval training, I don't think there is any proof that you will get better results.
Clearly, the pro's with this method (as well as the 15 second intervals) is that you'll get your workout done faster (provided you do the same number of intervals as any other workout). Again, it would be very difficult to perform this type of interval training on a machine, due to the time lag as you increase or decrease the settings. And finally, these too should only be performed by above average fitness levels.
30 seconds
The Turbulence Training workouts tend to use a lot of 30 second intervals. Beginners will rest up to 90 seconds between intervals, while advanced fitness levels will rest 30-60 seconds. The longer (relative) rest allows you to work harder in each successive interval (i.e. you'll almost be able to match your performance in the first interval with each following interval). Short rest intervals (as in the Tabata protocol) will lead to a dramatic drop-off in performance with each interval.</itunes:summary>

Is there really a best interval training system for fat loss?
Do intervals really work as well as regular cardio for fat loss?
Conservatively, intervals are at least as effective as regular aerobic training for fat loss. Personally, I believe intervals are far superior. And there is no denying that intervals allow you to get your workouts done a lot faster than slow, boring cardio workouts.
I have to admit, there is no best interval training program for fat loss. But that is a good thing, because there are so many ways that you can change your interval training to keep your fat loss results coming week in and week out.

By changing your training program every three to four weeks, you are using one of the key principles of Turbulence Training - variety. It is essential to change your workouts this frequently, otherwise you might suffer from a dreaded fat loss plateau.
And if that is the case for you now, I'll show you dozens of alternative interval training workouts you can use to kick-start your metabolism and fat loss.
Now what many people don't know, or perhaps just fail to recognize, is that interval training is not just for advanced fitness superstars. No way. In fact, intervals are an effective and perhaps even the most effective method for beginners to get fit and lose fat.
First you have to understand that interval training is based on relative performance. While my intervals would be much too hard for a beginner, my intervals would be a joke for Lance Armstrong.
So even for those men and women that are just dipping their toe into the fitness waters for the first time in months, years, or dare I say, decades, they too can do interval training.
If you are a beginner and you can walk at 3.3 mph for 20 minutes, then your intervals will start at a walk at 3.6 mph for 30 seconds to a minute. That is interval training.
It doesn't have to be high-intensity, sprint-to-the-death activity.
Instead, just increase the intensity slightly more than you can normally handle, and do so for a short time, and intersperse that with periods of easier exercise for twice the duration.
So if you did 1 minute at 3.6 mph, drop down to 3.0 mph for 2 minutes. Do that up to 6 times, and you've had yourself an interval session.
Now for those of you that have been doing only slow, traditional cardio, switching over to interval training 2-3 times per week is going to be the fat loss equivalent of throwing a lit, gasoline soaked rag on a pile of dry kindling.
Here's why...research has given us a lot of evidence that intervals are superior to traditional cardio. First, a study from Laval University in 1994 compared interval training to aerobic training - straight up - over a 12 week training period. Subjects that used interval training had better results. They lost more fat. You can't argue with that.
And second, interval training causes metabolic turbulence - also known as boost in your metabolism. Due to the high-intensity nature of intervals, there is more "turbulence" applied to the muscle. That means more muscle breakdown and more adaptations in the muscle.
Now I know that sounds very technical, but all you need to understand is that when all this extra activity goes on at the muscle level, it requires a lot more energy to return your muscle back to normal (i.e. to get out of turbulence and back to a normal resting state).
And when your body uses more energy, it means, in layman's terms, that you are burning more calories.
So it's important for men and women not too get hung up on the calorie counters in the gym. First, because the calorie count of the workout is not the only factor in determining fat loss (intervals burn far more calories after the workout - more on that later).
And second, a report on CBS showed that the calorie counters on some machines are often significantly inaccurate.
Doesn't that boil your blood when you think back to all those times you did slow,</itunes:summary>

You can lose weight if you set your mind to it! Are you ready to take action to achieve the body of your dreams?
The biggest barrier you face isn't your refrigerator, or an over-active thyroid gland, it's actually your willpower and your self-discipline.
Like many people you may have fallen into a vicious cycle. The cycle starts with eating a poor diet full of fats, carbs, and processed foods. These are the kinds of foods that taste good but make you feel tired and lethargic all the time. Then, because your body lacks proper energy, you don't feel much like exercising. Actually, you barely have enough energy to get out of bed in the morning.

What's the end result of a lifetime of poor nutrition? Aside from being overweight you have no willpower. It's buried somewhere under a hundred pounds of fat cells. With no energy or desire to do anything you drag yourself through each day feeling miserable and hopeless.
But there's hope! You can make the change! If you truly want to lose weight you have to do first things first, you first have to build your willpower to make what you want to happen - happen.
Here's a list of things to consider when boosting your willpower:
1. A Big Mistake Many People Make is to Wait For Something Bad To Happen. Your willpower is already within you and you shouldn't require a catastrophe to happen in order to find it.

We've all heard the stories about someone suffering a severe trauma, like a heart attack, and how that dramatic event lead to a permanent change in their habits. You don't need this to happen to you in order to get motivated!

2.	Watch Your Portion Size. This is one tip that can allow you to start small. It's hard to muster up the necessary willpower if you're trying to jump from one extreme to another. Decide that you're going to have the same meal tonight that you would normally eat - but give yourself a smaller portion size.

A simple trick is to use smaller plates so the plate appears full.

3.	Give Yourself A Cheat Day. It'll be an easier transition for you if you allow yourself some fun once in awhile. Tell yourself that once every ten days you can enjoy a pizza for dinner or a piece of chocolate cake for dessert. You'll be less likely to give up knowing that a tasty pizza will "occasionally" be on menu instead of "never."

Your "cheat" day doesn't mean "over-eat" day.
Slowly savor the flavors of your food. Once you've finished your piece, your willpower should kick in and say "no more!"

4.	Take Photographs. You can motivate yourself to lose weight by taking some self-portraits. We usually don't have the best idea about how we truly look until we see ourselves in a photograph. Keep a picture with you and look at it when you feel like giving up.

Update your photo often and compare them as you start to lose weight.

5. Make A Food List. Write down all the foods you enjoy eating, then evaluate whether or not these items are healthy. Chances are there are at least some healthy foods that you actually enjoy eating - such as fruits and vegetables. Make sure you start buying these foods for your home.
6.	Exercise In Moderation. Adding exercise to your routine can also be a daunting task if you try to jump in too fast. Nobody is telling you that you need to join a gym and engage in rigorous workouts if that's not your style. You'll actually be surprised at how energized you can feel just by taking a 30 minute walk, three times a week.
Conclusion
No matter how you choose to approach your weight loss, it's important to take small steps and remain in good spirits. Doing too much, too fast will only set you up for failure. Instead, set small, manageable goals like one pound per week. By focusing on the smaller, more attainable goal, you'll actually see results far more quickly.
In the end, remember to reward yourself for a job well done. After all, you deserve it!</itunes:summary>

uestion. I've been following your Burn The Fat system with good results.
I'm losing body fat and maintaining my current lean mass. I've noticed that during my calorie deficit phase I sometimes suffer from light headedness and nausea for no particular reason but not during my maintenance phase.
I read an article that said that toxins from the food in the "typical American diet" of processed crappy foods get stored inside our fat cells along with excess dietary fat when we overeat, and when we create a calorie deficit and burn the excess fat in our bodies, we release those toxins back into the blood stream. Have you ever heard of this? Any truth to it?

nswer. Yes, your fat cells can accumulate numerous types of toxins.
For example, almost everyone has traces of pesticides in their bodies. Many people freak out when they hear this, so they become more likely to fall for all kinds of bizarre and usually unproven "detoxification" rituals.
It's a shame that our environment has become polluted, but the real questions are whether trace amounts of these substances pose any health risk and whether you actually have toxic levels in your body.
One group of substances that has come to attention recently in the context of fat loss, (in addition to health concerns), is organochlorines, including DDT, PCB's and Dioxins. There is scientific evidence that these chemicals can be stored in fat cells and are released into your system when fat is lost.
The fish and wildlife service web page (fws.gov) has some detailed info on the chemistry and toxicology. One part was of particular interest:

          Organochlorines...

"Organochlorines (OC's) are compounds that contain carbon, chlorine, and hydrogen.
Their chlorine-carbon bonds are very strong which means that they do not break down easily. They are highly insoluble in water, but are attracted to fats.
Since they resist metabolism and are readily stored in fatty tissue of any animal ingesting them, they accumulate in animals in higher trophic levels. This may occur when birds eat fish that have been exposed to the contaminant.
It may also affect humans if they drink milk of a dairy cow that has ingested the chemical because the chemical is excreted in its milk fat. This is called biological magnification."

Some people may recall Rachel Carson and "Silent Spring" back in the 1960's which was largely responsible for the environmental movement and banning of DDT pesticides. Despite being banned decades ago, these chemicals can remain in our environment and in our bodies for years and organochlorine pollution appears to remain a very real issue today.
Consequences of environmental pollution
As for the release of these substances from your fat cells with weight loss, well, what can you say; those are the consequences of environmental pollution and this is just one more reason to stay lean and eat clean and perhaps also, do your share to take care of our environment, if you are so inclined.
But I do believe for the most part, your body is quite well equipped to naturally detoxify most toxins that are ingested in "normal" (small) amounts or would likely be released slowly with normal rates of fat loss. I don't think this is a reason NOT to lose weight, although some researchers say that obese men and women have to "weigh the health advantages of losing the weight with a potentially harmful effect."
Unfortunately, there is another twist:
Some data suggests that if these chemicals are released into your system as you lose weight, they could hamper fat loss by decreasing thyroid (T3 conversion) or reducing thermogenesis during weight loss if an obese person had accumulated these chemicals in their fat cells.

Believing in the "Cardio Cures Everything" mentality is the biggest mistake that all women make when it comes to fat loss.
Let me explain...
One morning as I was walking home from the gym I passed by a young women - about 28 years old - who was talking on her iPhone. I heard her say, "I'm going for a walk now to get some exercise because I'm going out for a bad dinner tonight."
And I just wanted to yell, "No - no - no - no - no! That doesn't work. It never has, it never will."

You can't out-cardio a bad diet.
Every woman I've ever met has made that mistake and had that "cardio cures all mindset" at one time or another - and it goes for all of the guys I know, too.
Unfortunately, at most, this young woman will probably only burn an extra 300-500 calories during her walk - if it's a really long walk. But at dinner, she's likely to eat 400-700 calories during the appetizer alone and probably consume that much and more in liquid calories as well!
(NOTE: By "bad dinner", I'm guessing she meant a high-calorie meal.)
The bottom line is that a single cardio session will not beat a bad diet.
Now you might be thinking, "At least a pre-meal cardio session is better than nothing."
Is it?
One British study I read found that some people OVEREAT in response to cardio exercise.
So when dinner comes around, this poor girl might think, "Oh, I did that long walk today, so I can treat myself to a bigger dinner or dessert."
The only thing that comes close to compensating for a bad diet is high intensity interval training and resistance training. Even then it would be better to control your food intake to take full advantage of your workout.
Back in 2007, an Australian research study on interval training was getting a LOT of press because of the impressive results. In the study, women who did interval training were able to lose belly fat without changing their diet.
In fact, one subject, named Louise, said this:
"My diet was pretty bad back then, with lots of sweets, junk foo, doughnuts and sugar - it was awful."
And yet by the end of this study, interval training helped Louise burn 17.6 pounds of fat in just 15 weeks - WITHOUT changing her diet.
Perhaps it IS POSSIBLE for you to out-train a bad diet - but ONLY if you use interval training.
And that's just another reason the best short-burst fat burning workouts are based on this specific type of fat burning exercise.
So here's what you need to do:

Give up the "Cardio Confessional Mentality" and understand that you can't "out-cardio a bad diet".
Stick to your simple lifestyle nutrition plan 90% of the time and then enjoy your 10% reward meals GUILT-FREE.
Use interval training to burn the fat and resistance training to sculpt your body.

It's that simple - a 3-step system for fat loss success that is guaranteed to work every time.
Here's the program that shows you EXACTLY what to do:
Turbulence Training Trial Offer
Enjoy guilt-free eating and fat loss with this mindset.

When you want to achieve success, making one change at a time is a technique that brings results. You shouldn't be surprised to discover that one of the most beneficial changes you can make towards success is what you eat!
The type of food you eat has an impact on brain function and how you feel overall. For example, the guys over at Google eat sushi for lunch and they're always coming up with innovative ideas that make our lives easier!

What to Eat
Aside from sushi, what else can you eat to make you more capable of finding success? The secret lies in raw foods - uncooked, natural foods.

Uncooked foods enable your body to better absorb all of the vitamins and minerals that the food has to offer.

Raw Foods
Raw foods also contain enzymes that are very important for normal bodily function. Without these enzymes, a person can be "off" mentally and physically. You simply can't function right if you're not getting the proper nutrition.
In addition, it's difficult coming up with innovative ideas for your success when your body and your brain are starving for essential nutrients. Why make it harder on yourself? The simple solution is to give your body what it needs.
Some of the most important types of raw food to eat are fruits and vegetables. All by themselves, fruits and vegetables provide much of what your body hungers for.
Benefits that you will receive from eating fruits and vegetables include:

  Alertness
  Clear thinking
  Strong focus
  Thinking outside the box
Ability to find creative and innovative solutions

The most successful and innovative people have many things in common. One of the traits they share is that they feed their brains as well as their body.
Changing your Diet
If your diet leaves something to be desired, you may want to make some changes so that you can take advantage of the benefits that a "success" diet can bring.
Here are some tips to help you make those changes:
1.	Make gradual changes. Gradual changes make it easier for your body and mind to incorporate new routines and new choices. As you make the changes, you'll notice:

  You think differently.
Your mind stays on the task at hand without deviating too much.
Your response time to certain situations is quicker than before.

2.	Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables have essential vitamins and minerals for your body and your brain.
3.	Increase your Omega 3 fatty acids. Eat plenty of foods that are high in Omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3 fatty acids improve brain function.
Where do you find these important acids?

In certain types of fish such as salmon, Mahi Mahi, and other varieties
  In ground flaxseed
In additional foods to which Omega 3 fatty acids have been added. Check your food labels: some foods have added Omega 3s to ensure that people are receiving an adequate supply in their diets.

Conclusion...
So start with fruits and vegetables and if you're not sure which ones you'll like, buy a little at a time and taste test them. Many people turn their nose up at foods that are healthy for them. To their surprise, they later find that many of them taste good!
The best surprise, though, comes when you notice the difference in how you think, how you feel, and how you are enjoying growing success!
To Your Good Health,
Mark Hanson

Even if you look and feel great, there are always steps you can take, every day, to improve your body and mind. It takes constant work to improve your life, even when you have achieved what you believe is your personal best.
So with that said, we all can use some healthy living tips to ensure that we are the best we can be every day.
Healthy Living Tips to Improve Your Body and Mind
It doesn't matter if you are in perfect shape or you have created your own unique "shape" over the years there are always simple strategies that will continue to improve how you look, feel and think. After all, without constantly improving your body and mind, you won't be able to reach greater heights and experience new things.
Sleep...
The most essential mental and physical health tip is to enjoy quality sleep. Getting enough sleep will boost your health and productivity, and it will rejuvenate your body and mind. Some people may believe that sleep is overrated, but study after study has shown that those who get at least eight hours of sleep look and feel better than those who don't.
It can be tempting to skimp on the number of hours of sleep you get, but it isn't worth it. Skipping sleep takes a toll on your brain's ability to function, your appearance, and on your overall long-term health. So do yourself a favor and skip the late night talk shows and midnight snacks and get a good night's sleep instead.
Exercise...
There's another easier-said-than-done tip that I'm sure you've heard many times before. Any guesses? Exercise, of course! Whether you are trying to lose weight or you're at your target weight, it can be tempting to skip exercise. No matter how you slice it, it's not going to do you any good. Not only does exercise help you look good, but it also helps you feel good. Exercise releases endorphins that make you feel good from top to bottom and stress literally drips off you!
Positive Self-Talk...
It can be difficult to incorporate these healthy living tips into your life, but there is one tool that ties everything together: the power of positive self-talk. You can use positive affirmations to help remind you of your healthy living goals.
Affirmations are short statements that encourage you to sharpen your mind and body while conquering your goals and improving on your weaknesses. Affirmations can help you focus on creating and maintaining the healthy body and mind you desire because it gives you the motivation you need to focus on your most important asset: you!
Some examples of affirmations include, "It is okay for me to take care of myself first," or, "I am healthy and deserve the benefits of a healthy lifestyle." You can use these simple positive statements throughout the day to stay motivated and focused. After all, we all need some motivation from time to time.
Conclusion...
When you implement these strategies in your life, you'll begin to realize just how easy it can be to lead a healthy lifestyle, especially once you have gained the right set of tools in your self-improvement toolbox!
To Your Good Health,
Mark Hanson
