I read this rather disturbing article in the Atlanta Journal Constitution a couple of days back which really got me thinking as to benefits of using SafeList. All this guy wanted to do was simply sell his motorcycle. And he put an ad up on Craigslist. Big mistake! Because the anonymous person who got in touch with him to buy the motorcycle, eventually shot him dead and fled on the motorcycle. Of course the police captured him and spent a day in prison, but was all this worth that one person’s life?

SafeList is a new concept. Agreed. But it addresses the bigger issue of web safety. I don’t think any one of us might want to switch places with Lam. We don’t want to fear the people who contact us to buy stuff from us. And we don’t want to let anonymous strangers into our house or meet them in some random street corner by a gas station.

What we want is peace of mind. We want to know that the person we are dealing with is honest and can be trusted. We want to feel comfortable doing things on the internet.

My heart goes out to Lam and his family. Not all of us have to experience something so disastrous in nature personally before we decide to change our habits for the better.

Most innovative, user-friendly classifieds, coupons, dating platform debuts for San Diego area; national launch to occur later this year.

SafeList Ventures, Inc., a San Diego-based technology start-up, announced today the launch of the world’s first and only online classifieds platform based on its Verified Identity technology.

Unlike other web marketplaces where buyers and sellers remain anonymous, SafeList.com requires its users to confirm who they are before gaining access to the site’s core features.

“Our proprietary authentication process sets us apart from all our competitors,” said Karim Pirani, founder and chairman of SafeList who embarked on a vision two years ago to build the world’s first non-anonymous classifieds marketplace that is safer, hyper-local and packed with user-friendly features. “Members of our community have the unique advantage of transacting only with fellow members who, like themselves, have also been authenticated, but still able to keep their identity private and create unique screen names.”

To become a verified user, individuals must submit themselves to a series of questions based on their personal life history that our proprietary system culls from a comprehensive Lexus-Nexus search. They must correctly answer these questions within 240 seconds. Failure to respond correctly will keep the person at the basic user level.

“Unlike commerce facilitated by websites like eBay (Nasdaq: EBAY) and Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN), where the chance of a physical meeting between the buyer and the seller is almost zero, transactions facilitated by a classifieds marketplace makes it almost mandatory for the two parties to meet face-to-face,” said Pirani. “Hence the need for basic due diligence is more critical, not less. SafeList.com recognized this and offers a fun, intuitive and safer solution today.”

Among the website’s many cutting-edge features is a fully integrated video chat function to help its members communicate with each other in a more protected and efficient manner for a myriad of activities, ranging from business transactions to social meetings. Numerous benefits abound by doing so, including for:

- Employers who will save time and money by conducting preliminary job interviews and criminal background checks with prospective employees.

- Parents who will be able to “meet” potential babysitters or tutors before inviting them to their homes for a more formal and thorough, face to face meeting.

- Singles who will find this feature both fun and helpful in finding a date.

- Members at large for interviewing service providers like plumbers and electricians before hiring them for a repair job.

Many industry luminaries, including marketing expert and best selling author Seth Godin and Microsoft Corp.’s (Nasdaq: MSFT) Chief of Research and Strategy, Craig Mundie, have called for online identity verification. Earlier this year, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Mundie put a harsh spotlight on the dangers lurking on the Internet, and proposed a three-tiered system of online identification. He also claimed during the conference that individuals are used to having to present identification in other areas of life, and the Internet should not be any different.

“People don’t understand the scale of criminal activity on the Internet. Whether criminal, individual or nation states, the community is growing more sophisticated,” said Mundie.

For a limited time, SafeList.com is offering a free, one-year verified membership to the first 10,000 users who sign up. The company will also be giving away one Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad every two weeks to a SafeList verified member selected via bi-weekly, random drawings.

About SafeList Ventures
SafeList Ventures, Inc. a privately held start-up, is working to make online classified advertising safer and more secure. The SafeList.com portal provides a “one click” ID verification and criminal background check, allowing members of its community, both individuals and merchants, to interact within a safer online marketplace.

Hotels have topped a list of the most hacked networks in the world according to a recent study done by SpiderLabs, a part of the data-security consulting company Trustwave. They found that hotels made up 38% of all credit cards hacked, over double the next industry which were restaurants and bars at only 13%. The study found that due to low security system software on hotels computers and the large amounts of credit card information, are the causes of hotels being the number one target for credit card hackers. Lets be safe out there no matter where we leave our information. This just goes to show how predatory the internet can be, and how vulnerable our personal information is. One thing to always remember when dealing with important personal information. ALWAYS SHRED IT!!!

The FBI is reporting that a new scam via telephone is targeted at wiping out your bank account and other assets. Labeled as “denial of service” attacks, scammers have taken to using software to tie up your phone lines while they empty your bank account. Scammers are targeting small to medium sized businesses. The scam can take months of preparations and unfolds like this:

Scammers start by stealing your information in a variety of ways. They obtain your information with phishing emails, soliciting fake calls on behalf of your bank or other establishment, or use malware to extract passwords and account information from your computer. Information from social networking sites are also used. After the scammers have obtained your information they use sophisticated equipment to tie up your phone lines while they contact your bank and empty your funds. The bank then tries to call your phone to confirm the transaction but because your lines are tied up with a ” denial of service message” the scammers are able to use a fake number posing as you, to confirm the transaction. If the transaction is denied the scammers then call the institution with your information to confirm the transaction.

By the time the victim and the bank realize what has happened it is already too late. The FBI were tipped onto this scam after a dentist was scammed out of $400,000 from his retirement fund. This scam is currently being monitored in the eastern states of the United States and is being tracked by the FBI and the Communication Fraud Control Association.

Always be alert when using social networking sites, and always keep your computer anti-virus software up to date. Never give out important account information to anyone not a verified employee of your bank or monetary institutions. Doing these things can help in preventing this type of scam being pulled on you!

With the rental market booming due to summer; as well as an influx in former homeowners looking to rent due to the economy, scammers have found a way to capitalize. Rental scams have always been around but only recently have they been gaining momentum. Scammers have started to pose as property owners looking to rent out their home for an unbeatable price. The scammers are using the same bait as every other scam. The “owner” states that they work overseas and cant be there in person. They ask for the first and last month’s rent as well as a deposit to be wired to them in exchange for the keys to the home. Many times the home still has the actual owners living in it, who are oblivious to the fact that someone is trying to rent out their very own property. The scam artist steals the information and pictures of homes off the internet from local classifieds such as Craigslist and uses that information to lure in its victims.

When are we going to wake up and realize that any type of business transaction, whether it be renting a property, buying something, or even meeting someone, that involves wiring money to someone that is in another country is too good to be true and is a scam. The saying “too good to be true” usually is. Unless you are meeting face to face with someone and acquiring your merchandise in person, steer clear of any other type of transaction that requires you to send money and receive something later in return. Lets use some common sense when dealing with classifieds transactions so we can fight scammers by never falling for their tricks again!!!

Check out these frugal and thoughtful Father's Day gift ideas! 5 creative ways to show dad that you care-- without breaking the [...]

It’s hard to believe that it’s June already! We’ve already celebrated Memorial Day and the next important event in the pipeline is Father’s Day. It’s time to show your appreciation for everything your dad has done for you!

Take some time to really think about the ways that your father unselfishly sacrificed his personal needs in order to provide for and protect your family. I’m sure that he did most of this without seeking mention or acclaim. How can you even begin to properly thank him for all of this? Giving a gift may feel like an insufficient token of gratitude, but that’s the great thing about dads—they appreciate gifts large or small!

Your gift doesn’t have to break the bank in order to show your appreciation! In these tough economic times, the last thing your dad wants is for his children to overextend their budgets on a present.

Here are some thoughtful and thrifty Father’s Day Gift Ideas:

Plan an Experience Together: Think back about your favorite memories. Most often this does not conjure thoughts of material items, but rather experiences that you’ve shared with those you love. Time is the most precious gift you can give. If you’re low on money, planning an experience to share with your father can be the perfect way to say “thank you.” Take him to a ballgame, go on a hike, listen to his favorite old records together, go for a Sunday drive—the possibilities are endless.

Write a Personal note: It can be difficult expressing your feelings of gratitude, especially to dad. Most dads don’t open up in this way very often. However, that makes writing a personal letter or note even more meaningful. It doesn’t need to be a novel or brilliantly crafted prose. A simple note is all that’s needed. Write about a favorite memory of time spent together, explore the ways in which your father has shaped you as a person, or maybe just list the reasons why you’re thankful for him.

Find Something Hobby-related: What are your dad’s favorite things to do in his spare time? Planning a gift around a beloved hobby of his shows that you listen and care about his interests. Even a small gift can go a long way. Does your dad live for golf? Get him personalized golf balls. Does he love to hike? Get him a yearly access pass to U.S. National Parks. Is he a football fanatic? Get him a classic football movie that you can watch together. You get the idea!

Cook a Special Meal: Food is the fastest way to a man’s heart! Cooking a yummy meal for dad is a thrifty way to show that you care. Going to a restaurant on Father’s Day can prove to be stressful & overcrowded, not to mention pricey! Save some money and capture the experience at home. Trust me, dad will thank you!

Create a Photo Album: Photos serve as poignant reminders of the good times we’ve shared. Dads aren’t always the best at organizing and chronicling photos, so the time taken to create a meaningful photo album will be much-appreciated. You could even scan and upload old pictures so dad can rest assured they’ll outlast the test of time.

I hope this helps to spark some creative ways to show you care. Drop me a line and share your Father’s Day gift ideas!

How to create a stellar online dating profile- tips to help you find your soul [...]

Quick—tell me about yourself! While this may seem like an easy task; attempting to sum yourself up in a matter of sentences can be quite a challenge. This is the situation facing most singles as they craft an online dating profile for the first time.

The goal is to create a profile that will be enticing to other daters. You want them to look at your profile and say “Wow, I’ve got to get to know this person!” But you also want to be sure that it attracts the right kind of person. Your profile should not only be an accurate portrayal of the kind of person you are, but must also clearly describe the type of date you’re looking for.

Here are some tips on creating a compelling online dating profile:

♥ Be Honest: Nobody wants to be rudely surprised when showing up for a date. If you choose to misrepresent yourself, you’ll only be able to hide the truth for so long. No one likes an embellisher! If you have any desire to secure a second date; be truthful up front.

♥ Let your Personality Shine Through: Some people think it’s a good idea to try to mask their quirks in an attempt to seem “normal.” Remember though, you want to meet someone who will love you for who you are, not who you’re pretending to be! And besides, normal is boring anyway.

♥ Be Thorough: Your profile is the first thing a potential date will see when deciding whether or not to contact you. You want to entice them to want to learn more! Some people think this means being mysterious and vague. However, most people who peruse online personals are serious about meeting a partner. They are tired of failed attempts and missed opportunities. It’s important to give other singles sufficient information to with which they can base their decision.

♥ Be Clear in Your Intentions: Are you looking for a lifelong partner or a couple fun dates? Maybe you’re looking for a friend. It’s important to clue-in potential companions as to what it is that you’re seeking. Misunderstandings can be hurtful. There’s no point in wasting your time or anyone else’s!

♥ Ask a Friend for Guidance: It may be difficult trying to write about yourself, especially when the purpose is to essentially sell yourself as a potential date. Most of us are used to being modest and it can be tough to put that aside. This is where a good friend can be invaluable! Who better to chronicle your shining personality than someone who thoroughly enjoys your company? Your friends know you from top-to-bottom and may be able to articulate your strengths in a way that you are not able to.

Hope these tips help you find your dream date! Now grab a comfortable chair and start writing…

Let’s face it: that awkward first date is already painful enough. What to wear, what to say, where to meet; both parties trying to discern whether the person sitting across the table is their next soul mate or the next dud.

Now imagine the same situation involving two strangers who met through a dating site. You have no clue about the person sitting across from you. Sure, you could do a quick Google search of their name before you meet in person. Maybe you go so far as to look them up on Facebook or Myspace. Let’s say you try on your own to submit your date to a background check. Remember though—the results are only as good as the information provided to the checker. Who’s to say that the person you’re meeting has even given you their real name?

It is more important than ever to prioritize safety and caution when using online dating services. Here are some ways to date smart as you search for your soul mate!

Online Dating Tips:

Always Meet in a Public Place: Offer to meet in your local coffee shop or favorite restaurant. Be sure to tell a friend the details of your plans, and make it clear to your date that others are aware of your whereabouts. You can casually drop the hint into conversation: “I told my friend Katie that we’re coming here for dinner tonight & she suggested that I give the clam chowder a try!”

Keep your Personal Information Secure: Try to avoid using your personal email address to contact online singles. At SafeList, you can create a screen name to preserve your anonymity, and you control whether your actual identity is ever disclosed. Do not reveal personal details such as your home address, phone number, or financial information.

Use Caution with Social Networking Sites: Be careful when “friending” your date on social networking sites. While it may seem innocuous, remember—these sites often include personal identifying details. Not to mention most of your contact info is easily accessible!

Trust Your Instincts: If you get a feeling that something seems off about your date, don’t hesitate to cut it short! Your safety is more important than trying to avoid a brief moment of awkwardness. Say goodbye and duck out!

Utilize Common Sense: Be sure to keep your wits about you. It’s easy to get swept away in the excitement and nervousness of meeting your potential true love. However, staying level-headed will help you make rational decisions.

As the popularity of online dating rapidly increases, it becomes even more essential to enforce a sense of accountability and honesty.

But how do you go about verifying information without scaring away your date?

That’s where SafeList can help! Since personal interaction inevitably becomes necessary with online dating, our online personals require each poster to submit to a background and identity check. Now you can rest assured that anyone who you meet through our dating personals has had their identity verified and has no criminal background! Use our real-time video chat feature to get a feel for a potential date before meeting face to face—you can feel secure that the person you find is just as great as they seem in their profile!

The world of online dating is an exciting and dynamic place! It is a new frontier that provides a fresh approach to finding love. So get out there and follow your heart (and head)!
