The City Diner at The Manor is still one of my favorite restaurants to visit. I met up with Patrick and had a late breakfast there. I enjoyed an American an omelet and a rack of pancakes. I think the breakfast there is quite comparable to Black Cat in District 1.

Well, it is the end of my workday at Horizon but thanks to a small rainstorm, I may get wet going home today. Not a problem, I got myself a nice Horizon rain poncho and a Horizon windbreaker to keep me nice and dry. Arghh, I just heard some thunder. I hope the roads are not flooded in front of The Manor.

It has been an interesting week. I spent most of it reviewing school information systems and learning managements for my school. We got two good candidates that we will choose as our vendors. I had no idea that there were a lot of good educational software out there whether open source or propriety. Expect some good posts in the future on what software we selected. No, it will not necessarily be open source. I found that some propriety LMSs can beat out Moodle, the popular open source equivalent, easily.

I had some good meetings with my Expat and Vietnamese friends as well. Mel and I met for a burger at Crazy Buffalo. I met other Vietnamese friends, students, ex-colleagues as well this week. Got another meeting tonight with another Vietnamese friend to close a busy week.

Still, though it it TGIF here in Saigon, for most of us, we still have another half or full day to work tomorrow. I enjoy Saturdays myself. I can get caught up on work. I have a paper due for a book this weekend so tomorrow I will go over the draft one more time. No break for me this weekend…

Anyway, that’s it for today. Sorry for the lack of pictures, I want to change the theme and framework for my blog to make it more interesting.

Have a good weekend everyone!!!

Well, my sunspot postings may be getting old but look below at the current picture of the Sun and tell me what is STILL missing:

No Sunspots

I posted an article about this nearly a year ago. Still no sunspots.

Since I posted that article, the world has had some strange weather. Both Europe and the US had colder than normal winters with the entire island of Great Britain covered by snow. This summer I have friends from around the world mentioning the weather is either hotter or colder than normal. Istanbul, Turkey, is experiencing colder than normal summers at a time where it should be very humid. Another friend told me that the tornadoes in the US are landing further north than in the area known as “Tornado Alley”.

The US is experiencing record scorching heat. Here in Vietnam, there are droughts in part of the country and the rainy season is pretty much absent. We even had a downpour for about 30 minutes that did not leave that much standing water, most of the moisture either evaporated or was seeped into the ground.

How does this relate to an absence of sunspots??? Hmm, how? Strange weather, lack of sunspots, I do not know. Maybe the sun does influence the Earth more than the pro-global warming scientists want to admit…

Maybe, as I joked late last year, Saigon will really see snow this winter…

As I am typing this post, my computer says it is about 88 F (31 C) outside right now. This is actually a cool day in Saigon compared to the temperatures the city has been getting. Of course, this is nothing to what they experienced up in Hanoi and northern Vietnam with scorchers past 100 F (40 C). What is noticeable here in Saigon is the lack of rain.

It is supposed to be the rainy season but where is our rain. We had a downpour yesterday which was “normal” but this followed 4-5 days of no rain. Right now Saigon should be getting daily afternoon downpours at about 4 PM at least. Global warming?

Though today is nice and cool, Saigon has really been hot the last couple of months. People who normally do not use air conditioners are using them now. Sadly for me, I am spending most of my days in air conditioned rooms. Yeah, it may feel pleasant but actually it makes Saigon feel even more hotter after spending extended time in 20-22 C temperature rooms.

Hopefully the monsoon rains will arrive. Vietnam is already suffering from water shortages. Power outages are becoming the norm in both Saigon and Hanoi now. It is common for buildings and offices to have gas powered generators.

I hope you all are staying cool these days. I am about to head back to Saigon but I do not see any rain clouds. Not normal…
