A Christmas Dinner for the Poor of Saint-Louis

December 23, 2007 was a good day for some folks in the town of Saint-Louis du Nord. That’s when Saint Louis Demain decided to throw a “sit down” dinner for some of the poorest citizens of this town located at the north western part of Haiti.

Many in Saint Louis and other parts of Haiti have been having a tough time making ends meet and eating a nutritious meal everyday. Unemployment is high and those without a family member in Miami or elsewhere in the Diaspora never know if their day will be spent enjoying a good meal. This is why when this Saint Louis Demain delegation chose Nan Palan to hold this dinner, it couldn’t make a better choice. This neighborhood is quickly becoming one of the neediest ones in Saint Louis.

Sponsored by a proud young lady from Saint Louis and making a living in Miami, this dinner of rice and beans and chicken and other good stuff was attended by close to two hundred women, men and their children.

Said Ms. Lucienne who came to this dinner with her three children:” God is good; without this dinner we probably would have spent the day without eating”.

Saint Louis Demain will come back later this year to organize another dinner. It’s hoped that the organization will be able to feed more people.

Infant and child health are very poor in Haiti. The infant mortality rate is 124 per 1000 live births. A quarter of all registered deaths occurred among infants who were younger than one year old; half of all deaths occurred among children under five. Most of these deaths resulted from infectious diseases, especially diarrhea diseases. Statistically, the neighborhood of Saint-Louis Du Nord and La Tortue, where Saint-Louis Demain, Inc. is targeting is worse: eighty five percent of the population lives in malaria areas and life expectancy is only forty eight years. Saint-Louis Demain, Inc. believes it can make a difference in the lives of these kids by giving them the opportunity to access health care. Saint-Louis Demain, Inc. intends to partner with Haitian nurses and doctors throughout South Florida and elsewhere to organize twice a year health fair for these children living in remote areas. In addition, we will support an ongoing educational program through media (radio, plays, and brochures) That focuses on educating the population on infectious diseases.

Since less than 20 percent of the population had toilets or latrines, which poor sanitation contributed to poor health, Saint-Louis Demain, Inc. wants to build portable toilets and provide access to potable water in the long run to alleviate the population misery.

Happy Kids Receive Their Toys

A delegation of Saint-Louis Demain (SLD) flew to Haiti during the last holidays to bring some joy to the kids and other less fortunate in the town of Saint-Louis. In the delegation were Jean J. Pierre, SLD secretary and Robert Manasse, another active member of the organization. That was the third straight year that SLD went to Saint-Louis to do some good deeds.

The delegation arrived early in the afternoon on December 22, unpacked and went straight to the site of the primary school known as Kay Loulou.

The choice of this area was anything but insignificant. Indeed, it reflects the mission of SLD to accompany the youth and poor of Saint-Louis in their quest for a better day and a better life.

What a day that was?

The kids with their parents and other guardians were already at the school when the delegation made its way to the courtyard. Excited, these kids screamed their joy in seeing bags of toys being delivered. It felt like the time when we were small kids and greeted our parents: “tololo, tololo, manman m vini”.

Close to 300 hundred toys were given that day. Close to 300 children went home very happy that they would spend a good Holiday. However, a lot of these kids couldn’t get a toy because a lack of resources didn’t allow the delegation to bring a toy for every single kid.

We hope with the help of our supporters we can bring more toys and more joy to the kids come Christmas 2008.
