Citing the current economic challenges at both the state and county levels, the Salem Community College Board of Trustees voted unanimously on March 22 to appoint Joan Baillie as permanent president. She has served in an interim role since Jan. 1.

Sophomore Dane Walter has been named Salem Community College’s Student-Athlete of the Month for February.

Walter, an outfielder for the Oaks baseball team, made the fall 2011 Director of Athletics’ Academic Honor Roll. He currently has a .308 batting average and 3 runs this season. A St. Mark’s High School graduate and native of New Castle, Del., Walter is majoring in Health and Exercise Science.

Oaks Baseball Defeats Williamson Free Trade, 6-5

Salem Community College played a home baseball game on Wednesday, March 21 at 3:30pm against Williamson Free Trade. The Oaks beat the Mechanics, 6-5.

Mike Dennery pitched a complete game with 4 strikeouts for the Oaks. Dennery added another win under his belt for a total of 3 wins and 1 loss this season. The Oaks swung the bat well with 10 hits from eight different players.

Arriane Shankaras, freshman outfielder, hit 2-for-4 with 2 doubles, 2 runs, and a stolen base. Shankaras is second on the team in runs scored (11) this season.

SCC Offers Summer Glass Workshops

Salem Community College will offer glass workshops this summer at its Samuel H. Jones Glass Education Center, 286 Welchville Road in Alloway.

“Rendering in Glass” will begin Thursday and Friday, May 10-11, and will resume Monday and Tuesday, May 14-15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. under the guidance of Jenna Efrain. Students create a series of pieces by focusing on pate de verre and small-scale kiln casting techniques. This workshop costs $650. No experience is required.

SCC Names Jimmy Connor Head Women’s Soccer Coach

Jimmy Connor will add Head Women’s Soccer Coach to his responsibilities at Salem Community College. Currently Connor is SCC’s Head Men’s Soccer Coach, a role in which he will to continue to serve.

“We are pleased that Coach Connor has accepted our offer to lead both our men’s and women’s soccer programs. His coaching skills, recruitment abilities and drive to take our programs to the next level make him a great fit for the job,” said Karen Freed, Director of Athletics and Student Leadership.

The Salem Community College Oaks have finished their second trip to Richmond, Va. where they played five games and recorded 2 wins and 3 losses.

The first game was Salem Community College vs. Jamestown Community College on Friday, March 9 at 7:00pm. The Oaks won with a final score 8-1. Kenneth (KT) Thomas struck out 14 hitters and only gave up 3 hits in a complete game victory. Dylan Burnett went 3-3 with a double and 4 RBI’s. Mike Alexander was 2-3 with 3 runs scored and was stole 3 bases.

Freshmen basketball players Amber Martin and Frank Yangello have been named Salem Community College’s Student-Athletes of the Month for January.

Martin’s game highs this season include 11 points and 9 rebounds. A Nuclear Medicine major, Martin was named to the fall 2011 Director of Athletics’ Academic Honor Roll. She graduated from Penns Grove High School and resides in Penns Grove.

Salem Community College’s men’s basketball team has qualified for the playoffs for a second consecutive year under head coach Steve Belh. SCC will play County College of Morris (CCM) in the first round of playoffs on Monday, February 27 at CCM (7pm). The winner will play in a semi-final game at Brookdale Community College on Thursday, March 1. The championship game will also be held at Brookdale on Saturday, March 3.

Salem Community College will offer free training in Microsoft applications to businesses in March.

Any New Jersey company or organization, regardless of size, is eligible for training at no cost. Classes include “Windows” (March 1), “Word I” (March 8), “Word II” (March 15), “Excel I” (March 22), and “Excel II” (March 29).

Classes are held Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at SCC’s Salem Center, 174 E. Broadway, Salem.

Courses are offered through the N.J. Workforce Consortium.

Salem Community College presented its Academic Excellence Award to Ann Gioia, Assistant Professor of Nursing, at a College-wide meeting.

Work by Salem Community College student Nancy DuBois has been included in New Glass Review 32, a highly respected national publication by the Corning Museum of Glass.

Dr. Peter B. Contini bids farewell to SCC

When Dr. Peter B. Contini assumed the presidency of Salem Community College more than 14 years ago, he brought vision, planning and leadership to an institution facing many challenges.

Salem Community College has named basketball players Aja Brooks and Vernon Robinson its Student-Athletes of the Month for November.

Brooks, a point guard, is averaging 16.9 points per game and also leads the team with 4.1 assists per game. The freshman’s season high was 23 points against Baltimore City Community College with five three-pointers on November 17. A Sport Management major, Brooks is a Brandywine High School graduate and Wilmington, Del. resident.

Gov. Christie has appointed Pennsville resident Allen Gage to the Salem Community College Board of Trustees.

Gage, who will be sworn in at the January 26 meeting, assumes a term ending on Oct. 31, 2012. He replaces Salem resident A.J. Crescenzi, who resigned from the Board earlier this year.

Mary Scott, College's longest-serving employee, to retire

After almost 44 years, Mary Scott is retiring from her positions as administrative assistant to the Salem Community College president and secretary to the SCC Board of Trustees.

Scott’s tenure began in 1968 as a secretary at the Salem County Technical Institute. When the Institute became Salem Community College in September 1972, she became the secretary to the college’s first president – Herbert Donaghay. She has been in this collegiate oval office ever since and has served as secretary for all six SCC presidents.

Salem Community College and the SCC Foundation have announced that several scholarships remain for the spring 2012 semester.

Scholarships are available for full- and part-time students, and each scholarship has its own eligibility criteria. As of December 5, there are scholarships available for students enrolled in nursing, nuclear energy, sustainable energy, scientific glass technology, glass art and business. In addition, various general education scholarships and book grants remain.

The Salem Community College Board of Trustees unanimously re-elected Chair Dorothy Hall and Vice Chair Tina DiNicola Esq. at its annual reorganization meeting in November.

An Alloway resident, Hall has served on the Board since 1999. In addition to serving as Board chair and vice chair, she has led the Board's finance and facilities committees.

DiNicola joined the Board in 2008. Prior to becoming vice chair, the Carneys Point resident was chair of the policy committee.

Salem Community College adjunct instructor Richard Gabriele recently received a prestigious honor. Kelly Baum, Haskell Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Princeton University Art Museum, chose Gabriele’s watercolor painting “Ahab’s Dream” for a Jurors Award in the Works on Paper exhibition at the Perkins Center of the Arts in Moorestown.

“Ahab’s Dream,” a painting from Gabriele’s wildlife series, was inspired by the novel “Moby Dick.”

Community members take advantage of SCC Health Fair

Students from Salem Community College’s Associate Degree in Nursing program welcomed community members to a Health Fair earlier this fall.

Co-sponsored by the Salem County Cardiovascular Health Initiative/Cooper Heart Institute, the Health Fair offered blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and Dexa scan screenings at no cost.

In addition, nursing students shared information on various topics, including cholesterol, diabetes, hypertension, sexually transmitted diseases, stress management and substance abuse.

Student sets sights on nursing career

Ashton Paulus realized the virtues of caretaking at a young age. She learned them from her mother who helped nurse her own mother during illness. She also saw, first hand, the impact loving care had on another grandparent before he passed away when Paulus was young.

Now, she is setting her course on the career path of nursing so that she can be the one to offer help to those suffering during illness.

“Being a nurse is something that I have always wanted to be,” she said. “I just want to be able to take care of people.”

In collaboration with the Salem County Art League, Salem Community College opens its doors to the public this Saturday, Nov. 19, for an exhibition featuring work from Art League members.

Held in SCC’s Michael S. Cettei Memorial Library in Donaghay Hall, the opening day hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Community members are welcome to speak with the artists and enjoy a first look at this new exhibit. Most items also are available for purchase.

The Salem Community College Alumni Association raised a record $1,502 at the 7th Annual Walk and Fun Run last month. Proceeds benefit the Association’s book grant fund, now supporting 12 SCC students per year.

Two members of the Salem Community College men’s soccer team have received post-season honors.

Freshman Jake Allen of Pilesgrove has been named to the 2011 Men’s Soccer All Region XIX First Team and All Garden State Athletic Conference First Team.

A graduate of Woodstown High School, Allen is pursuing a degree in Sustainable Energy Technology.

Salem Community College sophomore Jacob Wyshinski of Pennsville has been named to the 2011 Men’s Soccer All Region XIX Second Team.

Reginald Smith recognized by Salem County NAACP

Reginald L. Smith, Salem Community College’s highly regarded Associate Professor of Social Science, has earned the 2011 Educational Service Award from the Salem County NAACP.

John Stanko had always been interested in government affairs, but it wasn’t until he attended Salem Community College that he decided to make it his career.

“I personally find that the most intriguing aspect of political science is the variety of ways of governing that can be successful,” Stanko said. “The field provides a never-ending opportunity for learning.”

The Salem Community College men’s and women’s basketball teams recently helped the Appoquinimink Boys and Girls Club from Middletown, Del. with the NBA/WNBA FIT Dribble, Dish & Swish event.

The event helped boys and girls ages 7 through 12 to showcase their basketball skills and compete for an opportunity to advance to regional competitions.

The Salem Community College men’s soccer team has clinched a playoff spot for the first time in school history.

After finishing the regular season with six wins, seven losses and a tie, the Oaks earned the fourth seed in the NJCAA Region XIX tournament. The Oaks will play at top-seed Burlington County College on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 3 p.m. Burlington defeated SCC 3-0 earlier this season.

Board honors Mary Scott, SCC’s longest-serving employee

The Salem Community College Board of Trustees recently honored Mary E. Scott, the Board Secretary, who has announced her retirement, effective Dec. 31.

Ms. Scott is the longest-serving SCC employee, having started at the predecessor institution, Salem County Technical Institute, in January 1968. She has served as administrative assistant to every Salem Community College President since 1972 and as Board of Trustees Secretary since 1976.

The women’s soccer team played an away game against Cumberland County College on September 27^that 4:00pm. The Dukes defeated the Lady Oaks 3-0. Salem’s Goalie, Ashley Scafiro, had 25 saves on goal. Among all NJCAA Division I Women’s Soccer, Scafiro is currently ranked second in the nation in saves with a total of 139 this season. Scafiro is averaging almost 20 saves per game.

Under sunny skies, 300 students, faculty and staff attended the annual Welcome Back Picnic at Salem Community College on Sept. 14. In addition to free food, the event featured lawn games and chances to win various SCC giveaways. Organized by the Office of Student Leadership, the picnic gave new and returning students an opportunity to socialize and meet faculty and staff.

Salem Community College will offer glass workshops on Sundays this fall at its Samuel H. Jones Glass Education Center, 286 Welchville Road, Alloway. Unless otherwise noted, workshops are for beginners.

Flameworked Blown Ornaments takes place Oct. 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Using heavy colored glass tubing, participants make their own blown ornaments over a gas torch. Students also experiment with overlays and silver foil. The cost is $125.

SCC nuclear energy student completes internship at . . . a bakery

Mark McCord, a student in Salem Community College’s Nuclear Energy Technology (NET) program, recently completed an internship at Bridor, an industrial baking company in Vineland.

Although this may seem like an unusual internship placement, NET Instructional Chair Donald Callahan said it’s a great fit.

“Many of Bridor’s processes have state-of-the-art instrumentation and controls which is a main function of the NET program,” he explained.

Alumni Association to hold seventh annual Walk and Fun Run

The Salem Community College Alumni Association sponsors its seventh annual Walk and Fun Run on Saturday, Oct. 1 starting on the Dr. David J. Klinke Green in front of Tillis Hall.

With the $15 registration fee, participants receive a t-shirt. Proceeds from the Walk and Fun Run benefit the Alumni Association book grant fund for SCC students. Since its inception in 2005, the event has raised over $6,700.

High schoolers complete Rising Stars program

Believing that learning is a year-long process, local high school students spent part of their summer preparing for their futures.

Over the course of four weeks, 13 students participated in Salem Community College’s Rising Stars program, which helps students navigate the process of searching for and applying to colleges.

Salem Community College alumnus and former judo champion Bruce Leighty recently visited his alma mater with his coach and other longtime judo friends.

The group met in the College’s DuPont Field House, where Leighty’s third-place medal from the National Junior College Athletic Association’s 1978 National Judo Invitational and related newspaper article are on display.

The women’s soccer team played a home scrimmage against Gloucester County College on August 23^that 3:00pm. The Lady Oaks lost, but they are consistently improving their communication and game play. SCC’s goal was scored by #9 Angela Ciarlante in the 42^nd minute, unassisted. Salem’s Goalie, Ashley Scafiro, had 19 saves on goal.

SCC scholarships for 2011-2012 remain

Salem Community College and the SCC Foundation have announced that several scholarships remain for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Scholarships are available for full- and part-time students, and each scholarship has its own eligibility criteria. As of August 15, there are scholarships available for students enrolled in nursing, nuclear energy, sustainable energy, scientific glass technology, glass art and business. In addition, various general education scholarships and book grants remain.

The first goal was scored by #3 Cory Finlaw in the 35^thminute, assisted by Captain #18 Jake Wyshinski. The second goal which was also scored by #3 Cory Finlaw in the 72nd minute, assisted by #14 Felix Roman. The third goal was scored by #9 Orlando Askie in the 77^th minute, unassisted.

Following a nationwide search that attracted 53 candidates, 13 were selected and interviewed by a committee of trustees, faculty, staff, alumni and community members in June and July.

Due to Hurricane Irene, L.E.A.D. has been postponed, with the new dates to be determined.

The Office of Student Leadership at Salem Community College is introducing a new leadership development program. Leadership Education and Development (L.E.A.D.) is a two-day program for new and returning SCC students. The program helps students develop personal and leadership skills through interactive workshops and team-building activities.

Salem Community College student Amy Christian has been inducted into the New Jersey Collegiate Business Administration Association Honor Society.

A Wilmington Del., resident, Christian attended the induction ceremony at the State House with Assistant Professor of Business Karen Mattison.

The Collegiate Business Administration Association Honor Society was established by the deans of the colleges of business in New Jersey’s two- and four-year colleges to recognize the top one percent of business students.

Jose Rodriguez has been named the head women’s basketball coach at Salem Community College.

As the assistant men’s basketball coach at SCC for the 2010-2011 season, Rodriguez helped guide the team to winning the Garden State Athletic Conference and placing second in the Region XIX Tournament. He plans to continue serving on the SCC men’s basketball coaching staff for 2011-12.

Three student-athletes from Salem Community College have earned National Junior College Athletic Association All-Academic Awards.

Lady Oaks’ soccer player Brooke Kimble of Salem earned recognition for the Exemplary Academic Achievement Award, presented to student-athletes with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.60 to 3.79.

Kimble is on track to graduate in August with an Associate in Arts in Psychology. She will continue her education at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey this fall.

Salem Community College honored Brooke Marie Alston as this year’s Distinguished Alumna. The former Pennsville resident graduated with a Practical Nursing Certificate in 2008 and an Associate Degree in Nursing in 2009.

While at SCC, she participated in the Student Nurse Organization, serving as treasurer in 2008-09. She transferred to Wilmington University and graduated with a Bachelor of Nursing degree in May.

Scientific glass students build apparatus for organic chemistry course

The only Associate in Applied Science degree program of its kind in the nation, Salem Community College’s Scientific Glass Technology (SGT) introduces students to the necessary skills and techniques to construct scientific glass apparatus for university laboratories, industrial research and production.

This spring when SGT students were creating apparatus components to use in their Organic Chemistry class, Instructional Chair Dennis Briening pointed out the career benefits of the project.

Receiving graduation awards -- presented to all EOF graduates -- were Terry L. Bradford, Jr. of Carneys Point; James Fowler, II of Pennsville; Kiarra Holmes of Carneys Point; Ashley Ledbetter of Penns Grove; Brittany Ledbetter of Salem; Emily Peterson of Mannington; and Rachel Snyder of Pennsville.

Gina Grasty now has another name for her father – fellow graduate.

“She has called me many things over the years: daddy, room dad, coach, counselor, hero, father, and friend,” said David Grasty. “But ‘fellow graduate’ is something that not too many dads can say they get the chance to be called.”

Two Salem Community College baseball standouts have earned regional and conference honors. Dylan Burnett was selected for Second Team All-Region and First Team All-Conference, and Mike Alexander for Second Team All-Region.

A freshman infielder, Burnett completed the season hitting .433. He recorded 25 RBIs and had an on-base percentage of .505 this season. A Business Administration major from Pennsville, he attended Pennsville Memorial High School.

These five students from the Salem County Vocational-Technical High School have worked hard over the last four years, completing a rigorous load of college courses, in addition to their regular high school classes. With first-year Head Coach Jason Leta at the helm, Salem Community College’s baseball team is fifth in the nation in NJCAA Division II, with a team batting average of .356.

“We try to swing the sticks as much as possible,” said Leta. “We want our hitters to achieve good rhythm and display dynamic balance.”

In addition, two Oaks baseball players rank in the top 30 nationally for individual batting average in NJCAA Division II.

Salem Community College hosted - and won - the annual national Glass Olympics this spring.

Seventy-five students participated, representing Alfred University, Bowling Green State University, Kent State University, Cleveland Institute of Art and SCC.

Salem Community College Academic Coordinator John Steiner has received the Robert L. Long Training Excellence Award from the American Nuclear Society.

Steiner, who oversees the Nuclear Energy Technology (NET) degree program, was recognized for “leadership and the significant contribution made to the training of the future workforce of the nuclear utility industry through the partnership with PSEG Nuclear and the development and successful implementation of the Nuclear United Curriculum Program,” the American Nuclear Society award states.

Gioia, a Pennsville resident, received the Outstanding Advising Award for Faculty Academic Advising from NACADA Region 2 at its annual conference in Charlottesville, Va., April 6-8.

Salem Community College has announced its Dean’s List students for the Fall 2010 Semester. Students qualify for the Dean’s List by completing at least six college-level credits with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher, with no more than one developmental course and no grade below C. Jo Wu is living her life just as she chooses -- making art and scientific apparatus from glass.

“I love everything about working with glass,” said Wu, a Salem Community College student double-majoring in scientific glass and glass art.

Wu’s decision to attend SCC came after being involved in a nearly-fatal car accident, an incident that she says changed her life.

Held in the Paul J. Stankard Studio and Lab at the Samuel H. Jones Glass Education Center in Alloway, the event showcases the beauty and techniques of using glass to create art.

Sarah E. Stout and Leigh M. Stafford were selected as Salem Community College’s NJ STARS Ambassadors.

The New Jersey Council of County Colleges involves student ambassadors in promoting the NJ STARS program statewide. NJ STARS is a scholarship program exclusively for New Jersey residents to attend the state’s 19 community colleges. Students who graduate in the top 15 percent of their high school class may be eligible.

The Men's Basketball team has won their fourth game in a row. The most recent victory was on February 5th against Region XIX and GSAC rival Essex County College. The Oaks defeated the Wolverines 95-85. Back to back 40 point games from Omar Skinner has sealed another victory. Along with Omar's 40 points, he also contributed 10 rebounds and 5 steals. Dominique Roy was 1 rebound shy of recording another triple double with 12 points, 9 rebounds, and 11 assists.

The Men's Basketball team is on a three game winning streak. The most recent victory was on February 3rd at Atlantic Cape College. The Oaks defeated the Buccaneers 108-78. Omar Skinner led the team in scoring with a season high of 42 points along with his 8 rebounds, 7 assists, and 6 steals. Dominique Roy contributed 28 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists and 5 steals.

SCC adds Apple Mac minis to on-campus computer labs

Eighteen Mac minis are now available for the SCC students in the Cettei Library Open Lab in Donahghay 118 along with about 15 additional minis in room 215 of Contini Hall.

The Mac mini has been called the "world's most energy-efficient desktop computer." With features like a highly-recyclable aluminum enclosure, BFR & PVC free and meeting ENERGY STAR 5.0 requirements, the Mac mini's design is a design like no other desktop on the market.

Salem Community College has named Calvin Cizek its 504 Coordinator.

Cizek served as Gateway Regional School District’s Director of Special Services for more than 20 years. He also is an adjunct instructor at Penn State University.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in special education from Pennsylvania State University, a master’s degree in curriculum-vocational technical education from Temple University, and an educational administration certificate from Rider University.

Glass Education Center celebrates arrival of landfill gas

Salem Community College students now use equipment powered by methane gas from the nearby Salem County landfill to create works of art in the Samuel H. Jones Glass Education Center (GEC).

SCC officials, government and business partners, and benefactors recently witnessed the results of years of planning. The GEC joins two North Carolina sites as the only art-related studios on the East Coast using landfill gas as an energy source.

Eddie Fisher, a computer science major at Salem Community College won the contest for creating a new look for the SCC Web site’s home page.

A Lower Alloways Creek resident and 2010 graduate of Salem High School, Fisher won an iPad.

Judges selected Fisher’s layout as the best entry for capturing a prospective student’s attention and highlighting SCC’s unique qualities. The College’s Web site team plans to incorporate Fisher’s suggestions in a continuing effort to make the home page more inviting.

With the Middle States Commission on Higher Education's acceptance of Salem Community College's Periodic Review Report (PRR), the institution's accreditation has been reaffirmed.

In the notification letter to President Peter B. Contini, Commission Chair Michael F. Middaugh made a point "to commend the institution for the quality of the Periodic Review Report and progress to date, and to reaffirm accreditation."

The Salem Community College Foundation honored its scholarship recipients at a breakfast last week. This year, the Foundation awarded scholarships to 125 students, totaling more than $217,000.

“The Foundation’s goal is to provide scholarships for everyone in Salem County who desires to be educated at SCC and who needs such support,” said SCC Foundation Chair Ceil Smith.

Scholarships are provided through the SCC Foundation from the support of generous individuals, organizations and businesses.

College community supports Alumni Association Book Grant Fund

The SCC Alumni Association raised $1,125 at the 6th annual Walk and Fun Run on Oct. 2. Proceeds benefit the Association’s book grant fund, now supporting 12 SCC students per year.

Nursing graduate pursues her dream

It was a two-year-old boy who ultimately helped Megan Grazias decide what she wanted to be when she grew up.

While working as a lifeguard during her high school years, Grazias provided the first medical treatment to the little boy who had stepped on burning coals. Her control in the difficult situation combined with the confidence her fellow lifeguards had in her skills led to her decision to become a nurse.

Philadelphia artist enhances career through SCC

Paula Mandel began her artistic career as a painter before turning to the medium of glass to bring substance to her vision.

From 2005 to 2007, Paula attended Salem Community College, completing every course in the Glass Art program. She learned how to incorporate flameworking, along with kiln-casting, cold working and leaded glass techniques into her art. Now, as a sculptor, she combines these various glass techniques with vintage materials, giving them new life as art that is both whimsical and thought provoking.

Students heading back to Salem Community College this fall will notice a difference in the air on campus.

As of Aug. 15, Salem Community College became 100 percent smoke- and tobacco-free. Smoking is not permitted on any College-owned or -leased property, including the Salem Center, the Samuel H. Jones Glass Education Center in Alloway and the Sustainable Energy Center in Oldmans. Smoking also is prohibited in vehicles.

SCC names Gioia to lead softball team

Vince Gioia has joined Salem Community College as the head softball coach. The Carneys Point native returns after coaching SCC’s softball team from 1995-1999.

Gioia has managed and coached the Penns Grove-Carneys Point Servicemen’s men’s softball league since 1976. In addition, he has umpired for the Independent Umpires Association and has worked as a football official for the past 12 years with the South Jersey Officials Association.

Robert Peddle and Robert Walker have received Salem Community College’s Arlene Kelley Service to Students Award. Peddle, who served as curriculum specialist in math, and Walker, who served as curriculum specialist in English, were honored at Commencement before their retirement from SCC.

Salem Community College baseball player Matthew Vrabel was named National Junior College Athletic Association 2009-2010 Distinguished Academic All-American.

Distinguished Academic All-American honorees earn a 3.80 or higher grade point average.

A sophomore sport management major from Pittsgrove, Vrabel will transfer to Penn State - Brandywine where he will play baseball.

Salem County 2000 earns recognition for Internet Safety Initiative

Salem County 2000’s Internet Safety Initiative has been recognized by the Salem County Board of Chosen Freeholders.

The freeholders’ proclamation was presented during the nationwide Internet Safety Month in June. The resolution read in part: “The Salem County 2000 Internet Safety Initiative has increased efforts to raise the level of awareness of the need for online safety among all age populations by participating in county events, providing 17 community education presentations, and training 61 teachers and 15 law enforcement officers in Salem County.”

Each student received an award of $1,000 to apply toward college. Dr. Mark Jones, chair of Salem County 2000’s community service awards committee, made the presentations to Whyte (right) and Dow at a breakfast hosted by the Salem County Vocational-Technical Schools.

Brooke Alston always knew that she wanted a career in the medical field.

“I think I was five when I started saying I wanted to be a doctor and work in a hospital,” she said.

Today, the Salem Community College nursing graduate is living her dream, but it isn’t just those in Salem County who are benefiting from her work. For several weeks during the summer of 2009, Brooke volunteered her caretaking skills to help people in health clinics in Africa.

At 18, most students are just beginning their college experience. But Chukwuemeka Nnadi of Carneys Point has his future well underway.

Nnadi, known as “Chuck” to his friends, recently graduated from Salem Community College with an associate degree in Liberal Arts. He is now looking forward to attending The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.

“I want to earn my Ph. D. in physical therapy and open my own practice one day,” he said.

Salem Community College student Deborah Jenison of Pennsville was inducted into the New Jersey Collegiate Business Administration Association (NJCBAA) Honor Society for her academic excellence.

The NJCBAA recognizes the top 1 percent of New Jersey’s business students. During a State House ceremony on May 7, Jenison earned a NJCBAA Certificate of Achievement, an NJCBAA Honor Society pin and NJCBAA cord. She was joined by Assistant Professor Stephen M. Kozachyn and her husband, Sam Jenison.

A Practical Nursing graduate, O’Brien was presented the prize by the Salem Community College Alumni Association, which randomly drew her name following the Graduation Fair. The ninth annual Salem Community College Gala last month celebrated “Motown Memories” and raised nearly $52,000 in proceeds during an unforgettable night of music from the Spinners, Gladys Knight and other great artists.

The continued generosity of businesses and individuals is a main reason for the Gala’s phenomenal success, according to SCC President Dr. Peter B. Contini. Co-sponsored by the SCC Foundation and the Partners of Salem County, the Gala has raised nearly $435,000 since 2002.

Salem Community College will offer several glass workshops this summer. The workshops take place in the College's new Samuel H. Jones Glass Education Center, 286 Welchville Road, Alloway, NJ.

In Borosilicate Pendants: The Basics and a Whole Lot More, beginner-to-intermediate students create a variety of pendants using basic coloring and shaping techniques. The workshop -- which costs $275 -- runs Tuesday-Thursday, June 1-3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

SCC Names Stephen Belh as Head Men's Basketball Coach

Stephen Belh has joined Salem Community College as the head men's basketball coach.

Belh comes to SCC from Glassboro High School where he has served as the assistant varsity boys' basketball coach and the head varsity golf coach since 2005. He also was Glassboro's head junior varsity boys' basketball coach. Previously, he was a basketball and golf coach at Timber Creek Regional High School in Erial, N.J.

The Pitman resident is a health and physical education teacher at Glassboro Intermediate School and Glassboro High School, his alma mater.

The SCC Glass Club continues its spring sale on Friday, April 16 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday, April 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The sale is held in the Student Union, Donaghay Hall.

Twenty five percent of proceeds support student field trips, Glass Club supplies and visiting artists. All items have been created by students enrolled in SCC's glass programs. Gifts for Mother's Day are available.

Parking is available in Lot D. SCC is located at 460 Hollywood Ave., Carneys Point.

ServSafe certification training -- a program for food protection managers -- will be offered by Salem Community College in January, February and March.

Effective January 2, the State of New Jersey will require at least one Person in Charge (PIC) in all Risk Type 3 establishments be a "Certified Food Protection Manager." Completing a two-day course and passing a certification exam satisfies this requirement.

Salem Community College celebrated many milestones in 2009, from new partnerships and the dedication of the Glass Education Center to the national accreditation of its nursing programs and the creation of two ground-breaking energy programs.

At Commencement, SCC graduated the largest class in history: 197 students. With 1,509 students in fall 2009, enrollment increased by 15.2 percent from the previous fall.

Jim Connor has joined Salem Community College as head men's soccer coach.

Connor brings extensive experience in both playing and coaching soccer, according to Director of Athletics Karen Freed. Most recently, he was associate head coach at Rutgers-Camden for four years. The Salem Community College Alumni Association will sponsor a private tour of the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia on Saturday, April 24 at 10 a.m.

Opened in 1996, the Wachovia Center is home to the Flyers, 76ers and Wings as well as a variety of concerts and other special events. The behind-the-scenes tour will include members-only areas, visiting team locker rooms, the press box and conference area, and Philadelphia sports memorabilia.

Nick Hovaker has joined Salem Community College as the head women's soccer coach.

Hovaker is a goalie for the Philadelphia Kixx, a professional indoor soccer team. He is a soccer product from Chesapeake High School in Pasadena, Md., and played collegiately at Mount Olive College (North Carolina). He has coached for Chesapeake High School and Wilmington Friends School. In addition, the Wilmington resident works on the Philadelphia Kixx Kamps staff.

The band 61 North will present its second annual 61 North Benefit Concert for Spinal Cord Injury (SCI). Thanks to an outpouring of generosity from the Salem Community College family, 1,843 canned goods were donated to the Food Bank of South Jersey.

The Holiday Food Drive, sponsored by SCC's chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa international honor society, exceeded the students' goal by 155 cans. According to the Food Bank, the aggregate weight matched the number of donated items: 1,843 pounds.

The 2010 International Flameworking Conference promises to be a can't-miss event. The 10th anniversary celebration, March 19-21, will feature Paul J. Stankard, the Salem Community College distinguished alumnus who founded the conference in 2001.

Salem Community College welcomes back eight of the nine previous featured artists:
