Sharing this blog post from Honeybear Lane in hopes to gain attention to this young family who lost a wife & mother last week after giving birth to her third child. It just breaks my heart. Please read and share....

The loss of a loved one is a strange surreal reality. Life is completely normal except for one large, gaping hole. Each day the pain seems to become more real and defined as the actuality of what has happened sinks in.
My dear sister-in-law Alice gave birth last Wednesday to a beautiful baby girl. Unfortunately she contracted a horrible infection, strep A toxic shock. It hit her like a tidal wave and after a hard fight, she succumbed to the illness.
Alice was released from this world on Wednesday night, although she may have left her body before then. Her husband, my sweet brother, was left behind to take care of their two little boys and newborn daughter. He is not alone, of course. All of his family will be there to help him raise these precious little kids.

I am blessed to now be near my family and helping out where I can. My brother is doing his best to be brave, but breaks now and then. We were looking at picture together of his wife, trying to pick out a good one for the obituary and he put his head in his hands and wept.
So many of you have reached out and wondered how you can help. That support and love is astounding, overwhelming, and wonderful. We wondered of a way that people who wanted to help could. So we opened a donation account for Alice’s family. This money will go towards funeral costs, residual medical expenses, and the costs of raising children without a mother or a job. My brother is going through a very difficult thing and while nothing can replace the ache of losing his sweetheart, any sort of donation will help to ease the burdens a little.

Goodwill goodness

I was excited to find out that a brand new Goodwill store opened up right down the street from my in-law's house. The store was huge, clean, and I found exactly what I was looking for when I went in there last week. My girls recently moved into their own rooms, so my youngest daughter, Aubrie, needed more furniture. I was so excited to find this for $29!

Excuse the bad cell phone picture but this is the only one I took of it before. But you get the idea- and I was happy to see that all the knobs were in great condition and I wouldn't even need to replace those. And, her furniture is white, so all I needed to do was a little touch up paint and it would be ready.

So, I loosely covered the knobs, sanded it a little and gave it a couple coats of Rustoleum white spray paint I already had on hand in a satin finish. Like how I just grabbed a rag towel and an old shirt I had on hand nearby? Teehee.

It dried overnight, and only because it got too windy to put a clear sealant on it, or else I would've had it done in one day. Its very dry here in Southern California so the paint usually dries quick here.

But I love it in her room, it fits in there perfectly and is perfect to hold her treasures. I still plan on finding a small chair for her to use here, and a bulletin board or chalk board to put above it for her. Perfect girly goodness. :)

For the love of unfinished projects

I don't know about you, but I've got a LOT of unfinished projects around my home. Its ridiculous, like I have the time to even attempt all of these things, yet I know I will finish them soon. Here are some examples:

My gallery wall (NOT done- this is how it is NOW)

My oldest daughter, Julia's bedroom (It needs paint and wall hangings)

My master bathroom (I want to frame the mirror)

My son Gavin's bedroom (We need to fill that wall space)

My master bedroom (we need to finish painting this last wall and organizing the craft stuff next to the television)

So see? I have SO many future posts with these projects being finished! Its sick. I have a disease. Like I don't have enough to do without doing projects around my house. But I NEED to, to feel like the rooms are done. Then I'll change something else. HAHA!

Happy Mother's Day Weekend ♥

So its Friday, WHOOHOO! AND, its MOTHER'S DAY weekend. I love that. My husband has to work all weekend, but my kids have so much fun with it that its fun just watching their faces and seeing their excitement as they give me their hand made gifts.

I ordered some flowers from FTD Flowers yesterday to be delivered to my step mom tomorrow for Mother's day. I knew she wouldn't be home Sunday so I had them delivered tomorrow. I cannot for the life of me find a picture of what I got, but I am in LOVE with this arrangement they have.

I had no idea Jane Seymour had flower arrangements, but now I do! And good Lord are they expensive. This one was $81. Yikes! So I didn't order this one for her, but I did drool over it a bit. I love ranunculus flowers, we had them in our wedding bouquets and I just think they are so pretty.

I have been MIA because of this weekend, actually. I had more orders than I had time for and it caught me by surprise. Since this is my first year making signs for my Etsy shop, I didn't know what to expect, but now I do! Craziness. And LOTS of orders for Mother's day. So that's why I haven't posted the last couple of weeks.

My mom recently moved to her own place (she lived with us here) so my oldest, Julia (aka Julia Gulia for those of you old enough to know The Wedding Singer movie) wanted her room as her new room. My husband and I were kind of taken aback, we hadn't planned on her moving downstairs, and I'm surprised, at nine years old, that she even *wanted* to be downstairs by herself.

But guess what that meant for me............a new room to decorate!!! HAPPINESS. So besides getting Mother's day orders out, I've been scrounging TJMaxx, Target and Ross for good deals on stuff for her room. And OH BOY HAVE I FOUND SOME. I can't wait to show you all. I'm planning on painting her room this weekend (I know, Mother's day, but I LOVE to paint) and getting some things hung in there.

I also found some fun stuff at the local Goodwill store too. I have only painted one of them but I can't wait to show you those, too.

Anyway I hope you all have a wonderful, blessed Mother's day and enjoy those lil' rascals that drive us crazy that we cannot stand to be without. :)

{ Using a stencil to make a rustic wood sign }

Happy Saturday! I love weekends, and so do my kids. None of us enjoy getting up and getting ready for school in the morning, so its fun getting up and not in a big hurry to get dressed and out the door!

I've been putting together this tutorial for you for awhile now, for those of you who want to know how I make my signs *in a nutshell*. There is a whole explanation to how I make my stencils, but that will have to be another tut in itself. But any of you can do this with a pre-made stencil!

If you have any scrap wood lying around, you can use that, or you can buy cheap pine wood at Home Depot or Lowe's. Just make sure its not really warped or else it will bow and not look straight on your wall. If you don't have a stencil, you can always buy one for cheap at a place like THIS. That is where I got a lot of stencils when I first started making signs. But you can Google primitive stencils or word art stencils and you will come up with a ton of results.

I make my stencils with my Cricut machine. If you have a Silhouette, you can produce the same results. But at first, I bought all of my own stencils. I wanted to make signs!

First, you spray paint or paint by hand your wood the color you want your sign. I like Rustoleum spray paint, its about $4 a can at Home Depot. I love the aqua satin color, so I chose that. Then, you use cheap make up sponges- I like the ones from Target (non-latex), and you put the color paint you want the lettering to be on a paper or styrofoam plate. I just use basic Glidden white paint in flat, I buy a whole gallon of it because I mass produce signs for my Etsy shop but you can use any sort of paint you have lying around. Just experiment.

You have to lightly dap the sponge in the paint, and then dab it somewhere on the dry part of the plate to get the excess paint off. That way its not too goopy and won't bleed. I've never tried stencil adhesive to make the stencils stay on the wood, but blue painters tape works fine for me.

And don't mind my messy work table there. Everyone and their mom thinks that they can set stuff on my work table and it drives me nuts!

I usually always have to put three coats of paint over my stencils to get the coverage I want- the first coat goes on lightly, so you don't bleed through the stencil (It will still happen though, beware, and don't panic).

After you put enough coats of the white on to your satisfaction, then you remove the stencil and voila! And you can see where it bled through! LOL. That's my favorite part, because I'm OCD like that and want to fix up the mistakes. Its really easy though.

First ( I forgot to include a picture of this step dangit ) you have to fill in the gaps in the lettering with a small liner brush. That way all the letters look whole again and don't have that stencil-y look, unless you like that look, which is fine too. But it drives me crazy so I have to fill them all in.

See the mistakes? I can't just leave them.

That's when I take the spray can of paint I used, and spray a little bit on a paper plate. Then I get my brushes and fix all of the mistakes that stick out and bother me. Now some of you may not need to do this, I just can't NOT do it. And if you are distressing your sign a lot then you may not need to fix anything at all. Its up to you.

Next I "speckle" my signs. Just a preference I have to give it a vintage look. You take a DAMP, not wet, toothbrush, and get some of the paint on it you used for the writing.......

And LIGHTLY speckle. If you do it too much, it will look like you just oversprayed a bunch of paint on it. Or a bird took a dump on your sign. And neither is attractive. :)

Then let it dry COMPLETELY. This is hard for impatient types like me, but you have to, or else your sanding won't come out right.

Now you get your sander, or sanding block (I use both), and distress away. Start with the edges, and lightly go over the front of the sign until the desired distressing is achieved. You can also use sandpaper (fine grit), steel wool, or anything else that floats your boat.

I decided to try some distressing ink on my sign, since I've had it and wanted to play around with the effects. It had a neat outcome, but I like it without, too.

After you're happy with the way it came out, seal it with a satin clear wood finish to minimize the chance of nicks and paint getting chipped off.

Don't forget to put a basic hanger on the back, if you plan on hanging it on the wall. You can buy metal sawtooth hangers at any hardware store, Michael's, or Home Depot or Lowe's. They just hammer right in the back!

I am going to incorporate it into my gallery wall, along with my monogram canvas I made, but for now it can hang here in my living room. I love that pop of blue and am trying to get more of that color in here!

{How to make a basic monogram for your wall}

Ever since I saw Jen's gallery wall reveal post over at Tatertots & Jello she made with the cute cut out wood frames and her initial with canvas, I was inspired to do something similar in my home. My gallery wall isn't done yet (but is soon to come! WHOOHOO), but I did get a monogram made for our future gallery wall and I'm so glad I did it! It was fun AND easy. And it barely cost anything to make, since I had some of the supplies on hand already.

I saw that Jen had covered her canvas with fabric and had bought a wooden initial. I looked at some fabric, and couldn't decide on a print I liked, so I decided to just use some burlap I had on hand. I also went to Micheal's and bought a 12x12 canvas and found a wooden initial that would fit good on the 12x12 frame.

After some thought, I decided that I wanted to keep a pretty neutral color to the monogram. I know, not as exciting as some, but I couldn't find a fabric or color scheme that I thought would go well and I figured I could always change it up later on if I wanted. So I decided to just get out my husband's staple gun and get to work.

I cut the burlap a little larger than the canvas, then stretched it as even as I could on all sides. Then I stapled away.

Since the burlap started unraveling a little, I had to trim off the excess.

One side was a little shorter and really started to unravel, so I had to put extra staples here. I'm hoping it will hold up.

After I got the burlap all secured on the canvas, I decided to spray paint it with a dark walnut color that matched my decor well and would pop with the white. My staircase is white, and my trim, so I decided to leave the initial white as well.

Rustoleum spray paint is my favorite, and I had it on hand already, so that's what I used.

Then I just got out my glue gun and glued the initial on. I sanded the edges of it a little bit before I did that, to give it a distressed look. And voila! It was done!

Yeah, its simple, but it goes well with my decor. AND I can't wait to incorporate it into my gallery wall when I get that all figured out. Until then, I have it here on my mantle. :) And that snazzy blue subway sign there I made this week too, and will have a tutorial on how to do that soon as well. Rice Krispy treat birdie nests! With eggs!

My parents came up for a visit from San Diego yesterday, and my kids were being a little bit rambunctious and fighting over everything. Basically driving me mad. I wanted to push a mute button on all of them. So, to give me some sanity, grandma suggested that they go to the store and get some things to make some yummy treats that were fun for spring. I was excited to get my kids to do ANYTHING besides fight and be loud, so I was happy to ~~get them out of the house~~ give them something entertaining to do.

I didn't get any pics of the actual making in progress, but got the finished product. And they are EASY to make and simple enough to have your kids help without a huge mess. You need ingredients for Rice Krispy treats (butter/margarine, marshmallows, and Rice Krispy cereal or a generic, like we used), shredded coconut, green food coloring, jellybeans, and the mini Robin Egg candies you can get around this time of year.

You put the coconut in a plastic bag and add little bits of the food coloring to make it green. You've got to add a little bit at a time and mix it around with the coconut, but not too much or else its too green. That makes the grass.

After you've made your Rice Krispy treat mix, you and the kids mold them into little nests, and you place them on the grass. Then the kids can add some eggs and jellybeans! So cute and yummy too! I think I ate couple nests yesterday myself. Even my husband likes Rice Krispy treats. And the Robin Eggs are like colorful Whoppers. Love the malt!

Aren't they cute?! My kids just loved them and it was a nice distraction from fighting over the Wii, my Kindle Fire, and anything else they could bicker about. :)

How to make watering cans for your kids!

I love spring! And I love gardening. I can't wait to get those new seeds in my potted garden (we have a pool so no real area to put a garden in the ground). Its so fun seeing those herbs and veggies bloom and grow! Anyway, while I was at Target a couple of weeks ago, I picked up these galvanized watering cans in the dollar section. I think they were actually $2.50 though. But you can't beat the price for three kids!

I knew I had to find some sort of waterproof marker to use on them and put my kid's names on them. They love to help me in the garden and help me water the seeds and plants. I went to Micheal's and found these markers to use. They are waterproof, permanent, odorless, and non-toxic. AND you can also use them on terra cotta pots, wood, plaster, styrofoam, and paper.

I got all of the springy colors I could find and went to work. I had some trial and error with them at first, and they are a bit runny, but the smudges clean off easily (I'll get to that in a minute). I wrote their names on each watering can, and I used my artistic ~~genes~~ wannabe ability and drew some flowers on the girls' cans and a bee on Gavin's watering can. Oy, what a mess. The ink smudged in several places, and my bee wasn't exactly a real looking buzzing bee. Am I right ladies?! It looks like the bee is taking a poop. But you get the idea I was trying to go for.

When I saw that the ink had smudged, I knew that I could probably use a cotton ball and some nail polish remover and it would take it right off, and it did.

You can decorate any way you want. I decided on decorating the watering can within an inch of its life, so it got decorated on the handle, the spout, and even the back. I wanted to put the year, 2012, on it so if these stuck around, we could remember when we made these.

One for Aubrie, one for Gavin, and one for Julia. (We like to call her Julia Gulia for those of you that loved the movie The Wedding Singer).

Go ahead, laugh at my drawings. LOL. But my kids will love them and they will love to use them! I thought about tying some raffia ribbon around the handles, but decided that it would just come off and it would be better without.

Does anyone else have a Kirkland's store to shop at? Its like a teeny small version of Hobby Lobby. LOVE it. They have great coupons and I always find something in there for a gift I'm looking for, or something I wasn't looking for that I absolutely have to have, like NOW. I went the other day to shop for birthday gifts for my husband's family and found some great things. I wasn't actively looking for something for above my stovetop, but when I saw this rooster picture for $10 I had to get it. You can't tell well from the picture, but the red dots in the corners are actually rhinestones.

Then, I saw this cute cork keeper.

I saw it and thought immediately of my mother in law. The cute little red embellishments matched with her kitchen perfectly, and it was only #$14.99.

As I was leaving, I was debating on getting this memo board that I had been eyeing.

I loved the white frame and the chandelier silhouette on the background. I thought about it for awhile and decided that it would go good in my kitchen.

I love it to put birthday invites or random pictures on, for something new and different. :)

New Front Door Reveal

Well, a lot of you know I repainted my front door, so I thought I'd let you know how I did it, in case anyone else wanted to do the same. We had a basic off white front door for TEN years and I was tired of it. It was always dirty and not exciting. So, I went to Home Depot and researched the paint colors. I found the one I liked in the Behr Premium Plus paint in Spiced Wine. It already has a primer built in so you don't have to prime it especially if your door is white, like mine.

I just taped off the edges of the door, and tried to remove the door knob but was unsuccessful. So I loosened it the best I could with a screwdriver and painted around it. I used a regular paint roller- and my dad says I should've used a foam roller, so you may want to try that for a smoother finish. I had smaller paint brushes, and an angled one I already had to fill in the ridges on the "squares"in the door. The roller didn't get in the cracks in those and I used the smaller paint brush around the door knob and dead bolt. If you can get the dead bolt and door knob removed, I'd recommend that. I just couldn't and was too impatient for my husband to get home. Needless to say, here was my result. Not too shabby and much better than before.

Are you ready for spring?

Hello!!!! Are you ready for spring yet?! I never thought I'd say this but I am! Here in SoCal we don't get much winter at all, but what we do get is the coolest weather this area gets for a couple weeks. I think spring has begun in full bloom around here though. It has been warm, everything has started to bloom, and I can already see that I need to weed in my garden. Oy. But the benefits of spring are soooooo awesome. I love the mild weather, the pretty blooms everywhere. I picked up these daffolils at Von's the other day, and they have looked so pretty in my kitchen and living room this week!

They had them on sale for 3/$5- three BUNCHES for $5! That is awesome. When you buy them, they look like asparagus- just little green stalks. But the next day you can see the flowers start to bloom, and the next day, you get this!

I put two stalks in this vase you see here, and one in another white vase I adore and put it in the living room to add a splash of color. There's nothing like fresh flowers to brighten up a space in your home!

That's a picture of my middle child, Aubrie. LOL. But I just love the color that fresh flowers bring to my living room in March. What flowers do you like to decorate with? Give me some ideas on what to put in my home! :) Are you ready for spring?

How to use Vinyl Chalkboard Labels to Organize Your Pantry

I recently bought some vinyl chalkboard labels & a chalk marker from LetsTalkChalk on Etsy and they are AWESOME. I had some clear containers in my pantry that I keep my sugar, flour & Bisquick in, and I thought it would be fun to label those and also use them in our playroom. And wherever else in our house we could use labeling. And OH. MY. GOSH. I am in love. I already want to order more so I can add a label to anything I want, and have them on hand. I bought some in the elegant shape and in the fleur de lis shape, and I also bought a fine tip chalk marker that wipes off with a wet cloth, so I was set.

So, I peeled one off and stuck it on. I recommend you put it on from the bottom up, or the top down, to minimize the air bubbles.

And its totally true- if you write on them and don't like the way you wrote it, or want to do it over, you just wipe with a wet cloth and write it again. And voila.

I messed up on a couple, and all I had to do was wipe off and start again! It was so easy.

So now I'm organized (at least with THESE), in my pantry.

So then I went to the playroom. I have some tupperware containers in there that I new I could put a cute label on. So I did.

And now I've got labels on my containers in the playroom! Legos, Kitchen food & dishes, cars, and Handy Manny toys. I also put our Geo-Trax set in a container and labeled it. These are genius! If I decide I want to put a different toy in the tupperware, I can just wipe it off and write the new name! The same in the pantry. If I want to use one for a cereal and use a different cereal, I just wipe it off and write a new one!

What I want my blog to be when it grows up.......

The Space Between blog is a blog I've been following for awhile now, and I love it! She and a bunch of other blogs that I follow are having a linky party about what they want their blog to be when it grows up, so I thought I'd participate.

I mean, I'm a new blogger, I can learn from SO many people and have so many goals for this blog! Ones I don't even know about yet! But I definitely want this blog to grow. And for people to follow it and love to read what I post about! So I decided to make some goals:

Goal #1- I want my blog to be a place where you can get ideas on how to do things around your home. DIY projects are SO much fun and I want to share with you what I do around my home and tell you what I did so you can do it too! A lot of my friends ask me what I did to do this project or that project, so I thought a blog would be a great place to post those DIY things I do around my home.

Goal #2- I want this blog to be a fun place to come at the end of the day, like on Pinterest, where you can browse and find what you're looking for. I want you to be able to get a glass of wine and relax while reading it, and maybe have a laugh or two. ::Big grin::

Package Pal Fun!

So I signed up to participate in Package Pals that Jamie over at C.R.A.F.T. put together on her blog. Its a fun homemade gift exchange that she set up between fellow bloggers or people that read the blog to exchange crafty gifts and supplies. It will happen every other month, so if you didn't get a chance to do this one, you should do the next one! Its so totally fun. She sent me my PP, who was Joanna. I knew Joanna was somewhat newlywed of 16 months, and loved to quilt and sew and loved textiles. So, I sent her this:

Its a cute little basket I found at Micheal's (I think) and I put some burlap in there, some homespun fabric, and a cute twine holder with scissors. I bought that cute little holder of twine about a month ago, and knew I'd use it for something. Well when I read Joanna's email, I knew that I needed to send this to her! Such a useful little thing.

Happy Birthday!

...........to me! I am officially 35 now. I never thought I'd feel old, but now I really do. 35?! WHERE did the time go? Holy. Cow. Well, I've had a couple days of fun with family and friends, and still have some fun in store tomorrow for DAYTONA (whoohooo) and for the Oscars tomorrow night. I love watching the red carpet, not even so much the actual ceremony. Love to see what all the stars are wearing, all the outrageous and pretty dresses. I've been working on my master bedroom & bathroom update/remodel this week. I've almost got the whole bedroom & bathroom painted, just need my hubby to move a couple more huge pieces of furniture for me to complete it. And I'm still waiting on the light fixture I ordered from Lowe's. And then I will post pics for those of you that want to see them. :) I'm having so much fun. Here is what paint color I'm using, I got the idea after reading one of my favorite blogs, All Things Thrifty.

Its from the Allen Roth Valspar line at Lowe's, and the color is called Sauna. I thought it was so relaxing and I'm just loving the gray and white with the pop of aqua mixed in here and there, so those are the colors I went with for my bedroom and bathroom. Time Flies When.....

You're having fun? Isn't that the saying? Well time sure has flown since I was last able to update my blog here. But as you can tell, if you're reading, I have a new layout, new look, and I'm planning great things for this blog! Planning on sharing some of the DIY things I've been doing around my home. And totally ~~obsessing~~ having fun with. Just lots of fun projects I'm always wanting to do at once. Anyone else have that problem? I am re-decorating our master bedroom, our bathroom, our downstairs guest bathroom. ALWAYS wanting to redecorate my mantel, the kitchen, everywhere. Its a sickness, I tell you. But oh so much fun. My poor husband will just look at our new bedspread or paint chips laid out on the table and shake his head. He's used to it by now. I think. Anyway I will upload some pictures soon..........show you what I've worked on so far. I'm still very busy making signs for my Etsy shop so I'm learning how to create a balance between making signs and everything else. Its all so new still. Any tips are appreciated. :) Right now my whole day revolves around when the mail truck comes around to take packages. That way I can get my packages out without having to make a trip to the post office. And as I'm typing this I'm thinking I need to go get a couple packaged up and ready to go. But I will returned (you are forearned). Muahahahhahaa :) ~~Jackie
