Our Meditations series features four albums-worth (so far) of reflective tracks. No vocals allowed! The selection comprises 40 instrumental versions of songs from the first seven years of our music making. Beyond Here sums up the journey that we have been walking over the past few years, with the lyrics encapsulating the experience of following a God-inspired path. He often uses painful and difficult roads to shape and transform us, chipping away at edges that need to be smoothed out, subsequently rendering us into a better version than we could ever imagine for ourselves.

This concept of having multiple roads behind us inspired this music video: it doesn’t matter where we have come from or what we have traveled through. Rather, our focus should be on sensing where he is leading, and where he is calling each of us to go.

Of course, it is not just the storm itself which can be hard to weather, but it can leave behind much destruction and painful reminders of what has passed. And in the days, weeks and months that follow, dealing with the fallout can be a slow, intentional and difficult process.

So we wanted to depict this journey in musical form, and to acknowledge that the end of the storm does not necessarily equate to a final resolution. But that there is power in journeying with God as he works to transform us through such experiences.

Midway through the writing of the album, we encountered a verse from Ephesians that truly spoke into our own personal situation, as well as encapsulated the music that we were writing. This verse perhaps sums up best our intention with Beyond Here, grounding the various themes in the album in faith and hope:

“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.”

The album is the third in our series of ‘Meditations’ releases, and as with previous instalments, we have included a mix of new music alongside instrumental versions of songs from the past couple of years. And for the first time, we’ve also integrated some musical elements from our sister projects Narrow Skies and Antarctic Wastelands – so some of the tracks might sound a little familiar to you if you’ve heard any of the music we’re released under those two names!

We’re really happy with how Meditations, Vol. 3 turned out and we truly hope that it provides you with some moments of peace and tranquility in the weeks and months ahead.

While the physical and mental health benefits of yoga are probably the primary reason most people practise yoga in the western world today, for Christians – to know that the music accompanying meditation or a yoga practice, comes from a place of Christian spirituality is both helpful and necessary.

What influences Narrow Skies?
Narrow Skies is inspired by nature – particularly, the Scandinavian wilderness of forests, lakes and mountains. Although we live in the Swedish capital of Stockholm, there is nothing we like more than getting outdoors to experience the ever-changing landscape of the Nordic countryside. We find inspiration in the distinct seasons of the Nordics and never tire of the wonder that can be found beyond the window pane.

Why the name?
Well, we really wanted to evoke a sense that this music is both inspired by the vastness of nature (so ‘skies’ was an obvious choice) but also to convey the impossibility of telling nature’s complete story in any one song or track. Rather, in each piece of music we create, we can only hope to reflect a tiny glimpse into the natural world around us (in other words, it is a narrow perspective).

And we also love the creative juxtaposition of ‘Narrow Skies’ and the way it makes your mind wonder and wander.

Why the new music project – with a new name?
As we were writing our Seasons project, we felt the music was really developing its own sound and we wanted to embrace that. The lyrics are abstract and evocative, in a different way to the songs we have written as Salt Of The Sound. Creating Narrow Skies as a separate project allows us to expand and grow creatively and musically whilst also maintaining the individual identities of our other music projects.

When can I hear the new music from Narrow Skies?
Our year-long debut project is entitled ‘Seasons’ and will consist of 4 EPs – one for each season – and contains songs and instrumental pieces. Our Summer EP will release on all digital platforms on 26th May and is entitled ‘Midnight Horizons’.

But first a bit of background…

• – As you may have noticed over the past few years, the music that we release as Salt of the Sound has been stylistically broad…
• – You may also be aware we’ve been working on a ‘Seasons’ project for some time now, and through the writing and production of this the music has evolved to really have its own distinct ‘sound’ which we are thrilled about.
• – And on top of that we’ve been having a few issues with Spotify lately (a number of Salt of the Sound albums were almost taken down for reasons outside our control), which was a timely reminder that diversifying musical output is always a good thing!

Long story short, this has led us to taking a step that we have been thinking about for a while and now feels like a great time to add a new sub-project to the Salt of the Sound family…

This new project is called *drumroll please* … Narrow Skies!

We describe the sound as Nordic-inspired, nature-infused, reflective dream pop… Organic soundscapes combine with electronic elements to evoke images of the natural world; from shimmering lakes to the hidden depths of the forest, and the extremes of winter’s icy grasp to the land of the midnight sun.

And we will be releasing our first EP as Narrow Skies on 26th May! Have a listen to a preview of a track from the EP here.

So what does this mean for Salt of the Sound?
(Don’t worry – Salt of the Sound is not going anywhere!!)

Salt of the Sound will continue to be all about reflective Christian songs and instrumental worship music, which has always been our aim – and we are already working a Prayer-focused EP, scheduled for release at some point this Autumn! We’re also excited to be expanding our ‘Meditations’ series to include some exciting collaborations with other Christian ambient producers.

Our aim was for this to not be ‘just another Christmas album’, and honing down the concept for this release has been a couple of years in the making! We decided to focus on ‘light’ as a central theme across the EP, not only because it is a key feature in the Christmas Story, but also as it plays a fundamental role in many Nordic Advent traditions.

Here in Sweden, light is an essential part of the season in homes across the land when dark nights can seem endless. For generations, light has been used to overcome the darkness of winter – from lights placed in the windows of houses and candles which bring their gentle glow, to the cozy fireplace – once the sole source of warmth against the bitter night air and snow storms of winter.

We hope that listening to Waiting For The Dawn captures both the spirit of the Advent season, as well as a sense of light and hope in a dark and cold world. The artwork was created by the incredibly talented Katarzyna Lesiakowska-Tofil, and we feel it encapsulates the story of the EP in a beautiful and evocative way.

A bit about the music…
Echoes Of Wonder is our most personal release to date, reflecting on the amazing and unexpected ways that God works through different life situations. It continues the unique blend of electronic synths, subtle vocal harmonies, and thoughtful lyrical messages of our previous EPs and albums, while also incorporating a renewed focus on organic sounds and evolving atmospheres.

We were overwhelmed by the generosity of both friends and strangers (people we don’t know personally) who found it within themselves to give and support our music ministry in this way!

So now we are hard at work finalising the new album and we are super pleased with how it is sounding – and are so looking forward to sharing the completed product with you.

At our church on Sunday, I led the children’s message and shared this verse:

“Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed.”
– Ecclesiastes 4:9

It has really spoken to me lately about encouraging one another and I know that the support we have been shown through something so simple as this campaign has been a real encouragement to me. It is our hope and prayer that our music will also serve as an encouragement to others:

“So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.”
– 1 Thessalonians 5:11

We released our very first song, Listen, back in the spring of 2013 – the result of experimenting with many styles and sounds in an attempt to communicate our musical ideas most effectively. And in 2014 came our uptempto single, It Must Be Hope, alongside a music-video-on-a-budget.

And today, we’re super excited to release our first experimental worship song: Dwell Among Us

Dwell Among Us was borne out of a personal situation, a reminder that God has not left us to do His work without Him. Rather, His spirit continues to dwell within us, is working in us and through us in all that we do if we only ask Him and let Him.

An excerpt from the interview…

Through The Mist is very different to most ‘Christian’ Music out there, do you think that helps or hinders the band?
BEN – 
I think it works both ways! When people hear our music, their reaction is often ‘I haven’t heard Christian music like this before, but I like it’. This is a wonderful affirmation of the musical direction we’ve taken, but also poses a discoverability challenge! We write music with the vision that it could both be used in times of personal reflection, both at home at in church environments – and right now far fewer people are searching for this kind of music as opposed to, say, CCM or worship music. But with the explosion of Christian EDM tracks at the moment, both in quantity and quality, I’m personally hopeful that people will increasingly be open to and choose to listen to a wider variety of electronic genres within Christian music.

How would you define success in your career as a band?
ANITA – 
I think success can come in so many different forms: both big and small. You do want people to appreciate the music you write and I find it such an encouragement when we get messages from people who have taken the time to contact us about how God is at work in their lives through our music. And this is our prayer: that our music would reach the people who need to hear it in the hope that it might impact their lives in some small way. I would say that if our music helps someone to connect with God, even in the tiniest of ways, then our music is a success.

We moved to Sweden, I ran a marathon (which I’m pretty sure will never happen again!), started new jobs, released a new EP and album, and travelled to at least 7 different countries!

No pressure for 2015 then :)

But what was great about 2014 is that this time last year, Ben and I had no idea that most of that was going to happen. And so now as we stand collectively (you & me) at the start of 2015, we may have some idea about what this year holds in store for us… you might have a vacation in mind or plans to get a new job but I bet that many things will happen to you this year that you have no idea are even around the corner.

And we hope and pray that these will all be good things in our lives – but if they’re not, and life hands you a lemon or two this year (we were handed a few lemons ourselves in 2014), know that He is in the middle of our unknown and He will make it good.

“For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland.” – Isaiah 43:19

We wish you every blessing in this new year and in whatever season your life is in right now.

As you will hear, we have worked to evolve our sound after ‘Journeys’ whilst still maintaining a meditative quality through the reflective lyrical messages, subtle harmonies, organic instrumentation and synthesised atmospheres.

Meditations, Vol. 1

As well as this, and thanks to your feedback and requests, we have also created a full length album of instrumental tracks entitled, Meditations (Vol. 1), which is also available to buy and stream online. The album contains instrumental versions of tracks from ‘Journeys’ and ‘Through the Mist’, as well as a couple of exclusive tracks that are only available on this album.

Part of the reason for releasing this album is that we often find there is a need for instrumental music in different circumstances: in our worship services, as background study music, at home when entertaining friends…the list goes on… And we have loved being able to find Christian artists who write instrumental music, knowing the intentions behind their music are for Him and being able to support them in that ministry. We have a Spotify playlist of some of our favourite Christian Instrumental music which you can stream here.

The Title track and ‘I’ll Meet You Where You Are’ end the track listing, with Anita’s vocals, once again, almost hypnotically leading you into a time of meditation. With this release, I am sure that it will only enhance Ben & Anita’s reputation for providing music to encourage spiritual reflection, both in church and personally.

It Must Be Hope is the new single from Christian husband and wife duo Anita & Ben Tatlow. Following the success of their debut album Journeys, which reviewers described as an “unquestionably strong first album” (Cross Rhythms) and “5/5” (CMAddict), It Must Be Hope is the first song from their forthcoming EP, scheduled for release in late summer 2014.

CMB: How did you get started in music?

Anita: I think that both of us grew up in fairly musical families so music was around us from a young age. For me, my grandmother was a great pianist and taught me to play the piano – I always had a real interest in performing and singing and continued to pursue music at university where Ben and I met.

Ben: My first experience of music production was when I was 12 and I found that a few school computers had a cut-down version of the original Cubase, called Cubasis. I think I was hooked after about an hour of messing around with a MIDI percussion grid and a synth that sounded like a cross between a pan-pipe and falling rain. It appealed to me that this was something that my parents (being classical musicians) had no experience with: from then on I ditched the piano lessons, not the wisest idea in hindsight, and focused my energy on becoming a video-game music composer!

Learning from each other: what a great way to spend a day. Finding out what calling other people have as part of His story.

On Saturday 9th November, we went to the Christian New Media Conference in London. The conference itself was packed full of Christians eager to learn about our ever changing technology enhanced society and how the world of new media can be an asset for the church. Fascinating speakers – the difficult part was knowing which seminars to choose.

All in all, a very insightful day and for those of you who weren’t there (or even those who were), here are two key things I took away from the conference:

1) You don’t need to be an expert.

Sometimes that’s the role of other people. You may be an expert at something – you may not be – but maybe that is not your role. Word of advice I took away: if you’re not, don’t try to be. Leave it to the experts.

2) “The voice you have been given, whether chosen or not, needs to be used with careful consideration.”

Some of the wisest words I have ever considered, from Katherine Welby, aka ‘The Archbishop of Canterbury’s daughter’

I’d definitely recommend the conference as an inspiring day to explore new ways to utilise new media to the glory of God. Find out more here.

Their music has been described as “a unique blend of meditative electronic sounds, evocative vocal harmonies and thoughtful lyrical messages” which sums up the approach of Salt Of The Sound pretty well. This Wimbledon-based husband and wife duo have just released their ‘Journeys’ album. Producer and percussionist Ben Tatlow spoke about his early life and how this most inventive of groups finally came into being. He said, “Being musicians, my parents moved around a lot when I was younger – I think I lived in four or five countries before I could walk! They ended up settling in Stockholm, Sweden, attending a large international church (Immanuel) in the centre of the city. When I was 10 we relocated to the UK, where I have lived since. My family moved back to Sweden a few years later, and it was on school and university holidays in Stockholm where my faith started to become my own, rather than something inherited. I interned at Immanuel Church for a number of summers, working with both the youth ministry and the worship teams, and through the people and the experiences there my walk with Jesus began in earnest. Anita and I met at Nottingham University in 2008 – we were on the same course (music, what else!) – and it was our faith that sparked our first conversations.”

Highlights from July

July has been a great month in the Salt Of The Sound journey. We feel blessed & encouraged by the feedback we’ve received on our first couple of songs, as well as the traction we’re starting to gain across online Christian music networks.

Calling addresses the conflict that many of us face (I know I do) between the comfortable – the things we know well and are so used to – and taking that step of faith to get out of the boat and do what we are called to do. It’s not an easy challenge, nor is it one that should be taken lightly, but if we do follow our calling the reward will be so much greater.

The amount of creativity out there just waiting to be discovered is both inspiring and humbling.

Many independent Christian artists and bands don’t make enough money from their music to cover the costs of its creation, let alone to be able to quit day their jobs and pursue music as a career. And there’s no inherent issue with this – it’s largely an inevitability of access to production tools and the development of creativity itself being widespread.

(If you’re interested in the ‘illegal downloading is killing the music industry’ debate, I highly recommend the Trichordist)

For many, the joy and fulfillment is in the creating of art, the reaction of new listeners, the connections that music can foster between strangers.

Here are five great ways you can support independent Christian music online. From personal experience, it’s a huge and meaningful creative boost to know that songs that you have written are being heard and enjoyed.

I’ve illustrated the list with examples from some of my favourite Christian artists:

1. Buy an album direct from the artist on Bandcamp
2. Leave a tip on Noistrade, or just leave your email address in return for great free music. You may also be interested in our list of the top 10 free Christian songs of 2013.
3. Recommend a band publicly on Facebook
4. Tweet encouragement to your favourite musicians (or just say Hi!)
5. Leave feedback on Soundcloud

Inspiration behind Listen, as written by Anita

The inspiration for Listen came (somewhat ironically) from all the noise that surrounds us. In his Nooma video, Rob Bell highlights that we are very rarely away from some sort of noise – from conversations to the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Even when we are alone, there is often music playing on the radio, the TVs on, traffic is going past outside, aeroplanes flying overhead. But when do we just stop? Take a moment to listen for the silence?

I often find that I am so busy in my everyday life that I don’t ‘hear’ what is being said. It’s all very well praying for answers but how much do I ever really take the time to listen for that answer? ‘Listen’ is exactly that – a challenge to myself (and hopefully to you too!) to ask, ‘Are you setting time apart to allow God to speak to you in the silence?’ If you just stop and listen, you might surprise yourself with how much you hear.

1. Noisetrade has a fantastic selection of (predominantly) US-based Christian music artists, all of which is available to stream and download for free. If you like the music you can tip the artists directly, which is a neat feature. And we’ve just released some cool free music onto Noisetrade – grab it here

2. Similarly, Bandcamp has a strong Christian music base, alongside some interesting devotional music as well.

3. The Free Christian Music Blog does exactly what it promises, highlighting bands and artists from the well known to undiscovered gems.

4. Indie Vision Music is a website dedicated to sharing great Christian music, and handily features a free downloads section.

5. And while it can be a little hit-and-miss, Soundcloud hosts a huge variety of Christian music ready for streaming, skipping, and downloading!

I do hope that you may find some interesting new Christian music as a result of one of these sites – there’s so much great new music out there just waiting to be heard.

(EDIT: now confirmed as November 4th!)

The overall theme of the album is a journey; while we may be at different stages of our journey, we are all travelling on a road which is marked out for us. Yes, we have choices and decisions to make, but ultimately we are pilgrims, travelers, pioneers, explorers, searchers.

This over-riding theme kept coming to me in many of the songs I was writing – maybe because Ben and I have just embarked on a crucial stage of a journey, as we got married in February – but I think there is more to it than that alone. I feel that I am constantly searching and restless – wanting to know where I should be and what I should be doing, and yes, sometimes I pray about it, asking to be shown ‘the way’. Before writing this album, very rarely did I take the time to ‘Listen’ (which was brought to my attention through watching a Nooma video by Rob Bell entitled ‘Noise’ – you should check it out!).

So that’s what I started to do. Stop. Listen. Take it all in. Our lives rarely allow for the time to reflect but this is so what I needed.

Aside from being patient (which is often a lesson I need to learn) and waiting for answers to come, sometimes we just need to be what we were made for and – please excuse the cliche – be a light shining in the darkness, in other words, go and do! To quote Morpheus, from the film The Matrix,

‘There’s a difference between knowing the path and walking the path.’

This theme runs through some of the songs on the album, particularly in the song ‘This Little Light Of Mine’ which is a re-vamped version of the traditional gospel children’s song (have a look at the lyrics from the chorus in this photo!) This is possibly one of the songs I am most excited about and can’t wait to bring to you when we finally release the album.
