The Magic of Brimfield...More than an Antiques Fair

Remember the Harry Potter book (and movie) where Harry is about to walk into this very small shabby tent only to be stunned to find an entire house on the inside. Well... that's how I felt about the Brimfield TweetUp Tent, designed by Interior Designer Shane Inman, with the help of HGTV Celebrity and Owner of Re-purpose Shop, Cari Cucksey, the folks at Fashion & Decor, Rue la la, and Benjamin Moore Paints. There are lots people involved in making the event happen but Gretchen Aubuchon of Fashion & Decor, and Jen Hoyda, event manager, really rocked the show.

Not Your Average Tent -- The VIP Tweet Up Tent at Brimfield!

It was like I'd stepped into a magical place--with amazing and imaginative designs from rope chandeliers to upcycled furniture covered in gorgeous Robert Allen fabrics, and of course, the stunning bar that was lined with dozens and dozens of bottles filled with Benjamin Moore paint colors. With chair massages, a master mixologist, Warren Bobrow, mixing amazing drinks, giveaways, goodie bags, and lots of lots very fun and personable people, it was really hard to say I was "working". (But when I called home, I managed to say the word "work" without giggling.)

I bought 8 turkey feeder lights here for an interior design project that I can't wait to share with you.

And that was just the beginning! Then I got to go shopping, looking for amazing finds for two interior jobs I'm working on (and of course, if I spy something for myself...well...so be it). Hundreds and hundreds of tables and tents filled with antiques, vintage pieces, industrial and salvaged goods and more all line up on for almost a mile on the main drag in Brimfield, Massachusetts!

I picked up 8 light fixtures made from vintage turkey feeders that will be perfect for a redo of a Vermont Inn I'm working on (more about that later this month). Plus, a huge wooden egg laying box that will be perfect for the reception area of the Inn. A box full of old plumber handles (wait till you see what I do with those) and lots of hooks. I saw a dress which reminded me so much of the Little House on the Prairie and I had to buy it--for $5 I was willing to take a chance.

If I can zip this up, I'll be excited!

But with all that, still the best thing about Brimfield were the people I met. I was a little nervous to head to this event alone (my dear friend, and amazing stylist, Karin Lidbeck Brent, couldn't go last minute). Well, everyone made me feel so welcome and I made some new friends, Cari, Amanda, Jennifer...

After two days of magical fun, with a car full of stuff, I headed back home to a weekend of normal family life (you know, basketball games, laundry and getting the garden ready for planting). As I unpack the car, and thought about what I'm going to write in this post, I realized how happy I was and how blessed I am to call this "work."

Next stop, Country Living Fair in Rhinebeck, New York, June 7,8,9. At this fair, I'll be giving two demos and presentations as well as selling some vintage pieces at the Five Corners Antique Shop booth. Good thing I emptied the car! Phew! Work, Work, Work :)

What a small world--the vendor, Textile Trunk, is owned by Wendy, who lives a town over from me! Can't wait to get together with her. Her vintage textiles are incredible.

I bought 25 of these old metal plumbers handles and 36 cast iron hooks for an upcoming project!

Cari's tent, the Re-Purpose shop was filled with vintage pieces as well as funky repurposed pieces.

Came so close to buying the Farrah Fawcett bean bag chair. Brimfield has a little bit of everything.

Before I left the tent for the final time, I won this vintage magazine rack painted by Cari in a Benjamin Moore paint color. I'm going to use it as a stand for my own Salvage Books.

Portland Oregon, Designed with Salvage, Home For Sale

My friend, Shannon Quimby is an amazing designer and salvage guru, and now she has a home for sale! Shannon renovated it using lots of cool salvage material. Finally, not only do we get to OOOOHHHHH and AHHHHH over one of Shannon's design projects, but you get to buy it -- located in Sellwood, on of my favorite neighborhoods in Portland, Oregon! This kitchen rocks! I love the salvaged farmhouse table look of the kitchen island and the open shelving around the modern stove and that hood vent --what a statement piece. Check out this house!

Those salvaged ceiling tins used as wainscoting around the clawfoot tub, Shannon bought in Vermont (while visiting) at Mason Brothers Architectural Salvage. So fun to see them in a different location. Seriously cool floor -- how did you do that Shannon?

Talk about a cool wake me up light fixture -- a bugle and a wash tub! Shannon you are so clever!! Love the shower curtain too!

Love all the natural light spilling into the living room and dining room.

Step by Step Instructions on DIY Network for this Staircase Project

One of my more recent favorite projects for DIY Network was transforming my friend and photographer, Susan Teare's staircase in her 1800's home. For Susan's stairs I decided to try something new--wallpapering them! (The risers at least.) P.S. The "After" shots of this staircase transformation project are by Susan Teare...of course :)

Thought you would appreciate a before shot of the staircase. I know I do!

After a extensive search on the web, I came across a wallpaper that I thought would look great -- vintage Mexican tile wallpaper on http://www.artistichomeowner.com/. With a lot of prep work (the stairs were in bad shape since they used to have a rug on them), five coats of white paint on the treads and a couple of the risers, I was ready to add the wallpaper -- the change is dramatic. As I get ready to head off for a tropical sailing vacation, I can't help but be inspired by salvaged nautical and beach finds... Whether it's a necklace, bag, bar, or even a chair or two...you can always find salvage material repurposed into amazing nautical or tropical style. Ahoy Mates! Joanne

How cool is this modern chair made from a recycled old spinnaker.

Totally different type of chair -- a counter dining chair that looks like a lifeguard chair made from recycled plastic --perfect for a beach house kitchen island or an outdoor patio area!

I love this handmade recycled jewelry piece found on Etsy with all the vintage brooches, necklaces and fish pieces, perfect for my trip or everyday summer time wearing!

Not only is this a vintage Japanese glass fishing float pendant light but is it on a second-hand online shop, 1st dibs. This one is sold but keep you eyes out for more!

Not sure if the recycled wood bar or the fact that this is the NYC office of Tanteo Tequila that caught my eye -- maybe a little of both! Casa Tanteo a little bit of Old Mexico in Soho -- LOVE IT! Pass the lime please...

Here I am on a past tropical trip sitting on salvaged wood chairs -- love the bright colors!

And of course, I can't head to the boat without a recycled sailcloth bag from SeaBags.
Now I think I'm ready for vacation!

DIY: Make Your Own Unique Greeting Cards: Bigfoot on Vintage Music Sheets

DIY EASY BLANK CARD PROJECT...that will make you smile.

A few old sheets of music, scissors, blank cards, a computer, printer and a glue stick. Voila! Instant funny cards!

Yesterday I was feeling a bit under the weather so I pulled out the box of vintage music sheets my brother gave me (knowing I love old things), some blank cards and envelopes and decided to create some fun cards while hanging out with a cup of tea.

Everyone know I have a thing for Bigfoot (well...now everyone knows) so I printed a few from images online onto vellum type paper and cut them out. I cut and glued (I just used a glue stick) the music sheets (pick through the pile for fun titles) to the front of the blank card and then cut and pasted the Sasquatch on top. I stacked them all between wax paper and put a bunch of books on top for overnight to make sure they stuck together and stayed flat. Not sure who I'm going to write a note too on my handmade cards, but at least they will get a kick out of the card when they get it :) Another confirmed sighting!!

Creative Salvaged Heart Shaped Wall Art

Yes, I'm almost done writing the second Salvage Secrets book (off to the publishers this week) but a girl needs a break from sitting at the computer all the time -- sooooo.... of course, I decided to make a DIY project. I stopped by one of my favorite antique shops, Champlain Valley Antiques, and asked Tom, the owner, if he had an extra piece of old wood (Tom, also makes lots of farmhouse tables and other tables and has a collection of wood in the workshop). We checked out the workshop and he found an old beat up table top that was a mess. I was like "Hey...how about this?" So I bought the old table top and brought it home and attached a bunch of salvaged metal plumber handles I picked up at the scrap metal yard (yes, I go there too). I placed the handles in a heart shape and then attached them to the board with screws. Then wrapped the outer edge with some salvaged wire I got at the scrap yard too! Voila -- instant wall art that is now in my stairwell. Well...I guess it is back to writing. Happy Valentines day to you all. Books...Books...Books... Let's keep them alive. Here are a few beauties I'm checking out this winter...

I can't get enough of Italy and the Tuscan region. All of Ferenc Mate's books on Italy are great reads--funny, insightful and inspiring! The Hills of Tuscany is next on my list.

Thrilled for Patti Moreno and her new book, Gardening by Cuisine. I was honored to work with Patti and her team on filming for my DIY Network videos at her house. She has raised garden beds everywhere and I could really use some info on how to plant my own small garden. I'm going to read this book with pen and paper in hand!

Besides having the most AMAZING cover ever--I can't wait to hear what James Owen has to say in Cowboy Ethics.

This book is eye candy for the soul. I can't wait to spend hours roaming through the pages! Two amazing designers, Robin Standefer and Stephen Alesch, who's design company, Roman and Williams works with salvage in residential and commercial projects -- someday I would love to honor of meeting them. Until them, I'm going to devour Things We Made and pay homage to fellow salvage lovers!

Time for a cup of tea and good book! Enjoy.

2012 in Pictures, Salvage, Family and More

What an amazing year 2012 was! I'm honored and in awe of all the amazing people I met, the stunning places I went and the family and friends I love. Happy 2013 to you all! Hugs Joanne

The year started off with the holidays with family, including the friendly snowmen the kids made.

Throughout the year, including the winter, I made projects for DIY NETWORK with my friends -- Susan Teare, the photographer and Tina Noel (right), my assistant on the projects. We saw, spoke or heard no evil :)

What an honor and experience to create eight salvage design videos for DIY NETWORK. Big thanks to Filmshack for making the videos look great!

This was just one of the eight video salvage projects -- remodeling an outdated fireplace with salvage goods and all on a budget! You will be amazed what you can do with salvage goods.

Here is the after! Check out the DIY NETWORK videos -- I think you will love them.

Just days after the videos were complete, my family headed to Arizona, were I had a fabulous book signing at Sweet Salvage. The book continues to be a huge success and I love working with the publishing house, W.W. Norton.

Then we headed to the Grand Canyon for a family vacation -- River Rafting and Hiking Expedition with another family. We have the most amazing time ever!

In the spring issue of Better Homes and Garden, a story came out about redoing a mudroom with a peg wall -- that's my house and my daughter :) So fun to work with the BHG crew -- they are great!

Then there is the recycled at the school during an event. Never too early to learn the steps to a better world.

More great DIY Projects -- soon I will get them all linked on my blog -- promise!

Let's not forget the trip to Italy -- my twin sister, Rosanne's, (left) treat for my daughter's (her niece) 13th birthday. Truly a special time for all of us. We will never forget it. Thank you Zia Rosa (Auntie Rosie).

Mother and daughter ROAD TRIP during the summer and we stopped at all the important landmarks, learning about our country's history, as we headed to a wedding in historic Williamsburg, Virginia..

So proud of my sister Julie and her husband Curtis for riding in the 100 mile ride for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. That was Julie's third year! Curt's first. My niece and brother-in-law both have Type 1.

LOVE my family. My husband and daughter have been so supportive during this busy year!

Visited my friend Karin Lidbeck, one of the most talented women I know, a stylist for Better Homes and Gardens, Country Living, Good Housekeeping, New England Home and many more publications. She is so fun!

Another amazingly talented woman, Shannon Quimby, my BFF, came to my rescue when I need an assistant for a week on the DIY NETWORK video shoots. Thank you Shannon!

And of course, Susan Teare, the photographer for my books and my DIY NETWORK projects. Words cannot describe how much I enjoy working and traveling with Susan. This year alone we have spent five weeks together in Vermont, Georgia, California, Washington, Oregon, and more! Thank you Susan for your great laugh and easy going attitude!

One of the many book signings and talks throughout the year. This one was at Rejuvenation, hosted by William Sonoma's Designer Marketplace. Susan and I met the most amazing people. We look forward to working with them in 2013.

A beautiful fall in Vermont.

So excited this wreath WON the Pin to Win on DIY NETWORK. Also many of my projects made the most popular projects on DIY NETWORK for 2012 -- Yippee!

2013 started with one of the most beautiful snowstorms I've ever seen. It is magical. I'm so lucky and appreciate what I have and can do everyday. As the snow continues to fall, I'm inside busy writing away -- for my second Salvage Secrets book is due to the publisher this month. I can't wait to share it with you all. Thank you so much for your kindness and support! I look forward to another magical year!

How much fun to write on your backspash! It is easy with this project made with Plexiglas.

Bead board with a Vintage Artwork Look: Fork, Knife and Spoon. You can find small amounts of bead board at your local rebuild center -- the vintage kitchen artwork -- an Etsy find!

And of course, another simple solution for a BIG change, hand paint your back splash tile in a Moroccan pattern with bright blues and greens! It takes a little time but worth the effort.

I love checking Pinterest out for cool holiday crafts -- here is an idea you can do with the kids -- maybe it is 52 helpful chores -- I'd like that!

Etsy is another great place to fine one of a kind holiday gifts. Love this kid (of all ages) ornament! A wonderful stocking stuffer.

I can't give you a list of holiday gift ideas without mentioning my book -- silly! You can pick it up on Amazon, your local bookstore or if you have a Rejuvenation near you -- many of them have autographed copies!

I picked up this gorgeous vintage jewelry box at Vintage Inspired Marketplace. I'm sending it to a friend for the holidays with some fun notes inside.

What could be better for a Yankee Swap holiday gift than a vintage inspired Steve Austin (The Six Million Dollar Man) versus Sasquatch T-shirt posted on Ebay? That's what I thought...NOTHING :) I hope I pick #1.

WOW! What a trip (or two). Starting on October 24 and ending yesterday November 9th, Susan Teare (the photographer for my books) and I have been traveling the nation, photographing homes and business, doing book signings, talks, visiting fairs and more. On November 1st we landed in Phoenix, then drove to L.A. and then drove to San Francisco/Sausalito--all in 8 days! It was an incredible journey and I want to share some highlights -- especially some amazing places to check out and designers to watch for! We really cannot express our gratitude enough to all the individuals who opened up their homes and hearts -- we are truly in awe! (more details below the pictures)

LOS ANGELES
Who knew you could make so many shapes in milk froth -- healthy food every day -- weather -- perfect! Fairfax High School rummage sale every Sunday only a block from my hotel and I only had 20 minutes -- can you feel my pain??????!!!!!!

Talented folks: Stephanie at TOTEM -- you have to check out her stuff! Jennifer Segal -- her style rocks -- she is an amazing architect.

Rejuvenation in Culver City -- one of the most beautiful stores every -- Doug Grooms is the nicest guy -- you have to stop and say hello!

SAN FRANCISCO/SAUSALITO
What a cool drive (especially without traffic). Roadside Mexican food stand-- half way there -- does it get any better? Luxury hotel -- Casa Madrona -- overlooking the bay -- I felt like a queen. Tricia Rose, Rough Linen, her cottage over the water, her style, her kindness and of course, her high quality linens -- what a day! Industrie Denim in San Francisco -- opened a year ago -- the best denim collection -- not to mention the nicest manager -- Rob! Bancroft Hotel at Uof C, Berkely -- I felt smarter just being there!

Rejuvenation event with Designer's Market Place and William Sonamo -- the highlight! I had no idea how the event would go-- Both Susan and I walked away elated! Nicest people ever, very enthusiastic about salvage and more to come in the future!! Yippee!!
