Cleaning your jewelry

Jewelry when used for a long period of time without caring for its cleanliness becomes dull-colored and faint. Professional cleaning is mostly expensive and time consuming. Imagine you are going somewhere urgently and you need to wear your gold jewellery which appears to be dirty and dim colored. What will you do in such a situation? You can make your vintage jewelleries look good as new with minimal effort and home remedy tricks. And you can make your jewelry shine by cleaning it yourself at home.

To prevent your jewelry from de-coloration, you must know things which remove its shine and luster. Try to minimize exposing your jewelry to cosmetics and harmful chemicals. Always remove your jewelry when applying perfumes, skin care products and before you take a bath. Oils and dirt can contribute to discoloration of your ornaments. Prevention and care can make your ornaments and other jewelries last longer. Use a non-abrasive cleaner and apply it using a brush with soft bristles.

If you have gold and silver jewelry use polishing cloth or silver cloths for cleaning it dry. You can also soak for 10 minutes in a solution of two cups warm water and a few drops of a mild dishwashing liquid. Gently scrub it with a soft-bristle toothbrush. Rinse it for a few minutes in cold water, and dry with a soft cloth. Don’t use toothpaste or other abrasive chemicals.

You can also use isopropyl alcohol. Isopropyl alcohol is considered as the most effective cleanser of gold and silver jewelry. Once you have cleaned your jewelry in warm water, then let it air-dry. Apply isopropyl alcohol for a few minutes for effective results.

Cleaning your pearls

Hairsprays, perfumes, and lotions can be harmful to your pearl jewelry. When you’re dressing, keep the “last on, first off” rule in mind. It means that don’t put on your pearls until after you’ve put on your makeup, perfume and lotions. This will prevent these products from building up on your jewelry. By following this method, you’ll limit your pearl jewelry’s exposure to chemicals and prolong the luster of your pearl jewelry.

When cleaning, wipe individual pearls with a very slightly damp soft clean lint-free cloth. Don’t use any type of scrubbing devise, like toothbrush, or use soap and detergent. After cleaning, lay your pearl jewelry on a clean, soft cloth to dry.

To return to its original luster, wipe the pearls with a little olive oil using a lint-free cloth. This will bring the shine back. Finally when storing, separate your pearls from other jewelries as other gemstones can scratch them. You can use a jewelry pouch specifically for your precious pearls.
