The lobby of the Banque Laboucherd was simple enough. The walls were wood paneled, and the sofas were freshly upholstered. On a coffee table, there was a display of British, American and local Swiss papers. Everything about the place smelt of money and purpose. If I was offered another life, I might well be a Swiss banker, reflected Sam. Good money, beautiful surroundings, low taxes. And all you had to do was keep your mouth shut. How hard could that be?

Only one unit had so far been exempt from his economising. Assassinations. They could spend what they wanted to. So long as they kept sending home the corpses.
