IN THE NEWS: For San Diego Schools, a Fear That Larger Classes Will Hinder Learning

Using state money and federal stimulus dollars, San Diego has held class size to 17 in kindergarten through second grade at its 30 poorest schools. “Small class size is the most important priority for us,” said Richard Barrera, the school board president. “These children are behind when they enter kindergarten. If they’re on grade level by third grade, most will be fine." Mr. Barrera believes that the rise in the district’s state test scores — to 56 percent proficient in English from 45 percent three years ago — is due, in part, to smaller classes. New School-Based Clinic Aims to Save Lives

A new one-of-a kind school-based medical clinic has opened at San Diego Unified’s Central Elementary School that officials hope will have major impact locally and nationally.

A ceremony to officially dedicate the clinic took place at 10 a.m., Friday, Dec. 10.
The mission of Central Elementary Health and Wellness Center in City Heights is to provide health care to the school’s 860 students and their siblings, from infancy until 15 years of age. An estimated 1 in 4 children attending Central in the high-poverty community currently do not have health care.

“The clinic is a dream come true for the school and community,” said Central Principal Cindy Marten, who sees first-hand how medical problems can interfere with learning.

Medical research shows that school-based health clinics work, improving both the physical and academic well-being of students. According to the National Assembly on School-Based Health Care, clinics contribute to higher student attendance and achievement, with a 50 percent decrease in absenteeism and measurable impact on higher grades.

Central’s clinic will be run by licensed medical professionals through a partnership with San Diego Unified and two existing clinics: La Maestra and San Diego Family Care. Together the community clinics treat the majority of student families in the area, making them trusted medical practitioners in the mid-city neighborhood.

What makes this clinic unique is that it was built on campus attached to the school nurse’s office with the help of a $50,000 grant from Price Family Charitable Fund. Central’s nurse will work in partnership with the clinic staff, and it is the clinic’s medical staff members who will run health care services from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the 11 months that Central operates.

Today was our most successful Family Friday so far this year. We are still counting the number of parents who attended and as soon as the numbers are in I will post the results here. Judging by the classrooms that I visited and the packed meeting with me in the cafeteria, I am certain we had more than ever! Great job Central parents! Thank you to the children for writing personal invitations to your parents. Huge Thank You to our teachers for supporting this imporant event.

Do you know how your child scored on Benchmark #1 at the beginning of the year? If not, find out from your child's teacher. Benchmark #2 is coming up next week! Find out what day your child is taking this important test. Our goal is 40% Proficient/Advanced in English Language Arts and 58% Proficient/Advanced in Mathematics. The results will be available within hours of administering the test, so be sure to ask your child's teacher how he/she did. There are five bands: Far Below Basic, Below Basic, Basic, Proficient, Advanced. We are looking for Proficient or Advanced!

Our “Safari” with Meeker Foundation

Every year, Central students go on safari to Africa, Asia, the Americas and more -- viewing the amazing animals from those farway lands at the San Diego Wild Animal Park. It is everyone's favorite field trip. And this gift to Central students comes through the generousity of the Meeker Foundation, which sponsors every third grader to camp out overnight on the savannah on the Park's rolling hills on the Roar and Snore program. That means a big giant sleepover! Our city kids in tents! S'mores!

We are lucky enough to be the only outsiders allowed to prowl the park at night, and see the animals in real live habitat so close to the real thing you can just imagine yourself on safari. We learn about animals, and about conservation too. We awaken with the sun and breakfast right beside the rhinos!

We thank the Jarrett Meeker Foundation for its awesome support.

On International Walk to School Day, our whole school goes by foot with their famlilies and learns the healthy and festive way to get to class. What a great way everyone participated lowering the stress land getting to spend more time talking about school with their families along the way, and wave to all their friends. Hope you'll join us next year!
