Padres, Maybin agree to a five-year extension

Per Dan Hayes of the North County Times, the Padres and Cameron Maybin have agreed to a deal that will keep the center fielder in San Diego through the 2016 season.

The five-year deal is worth $25 million and the club has an option for 2017 as well.

“Cameron has certainly emerged as a core player,” [GM Josh] Byrnes said in a team press release. “During his time with the Padres, he has impressed us with his player and with his character. He has shown us that he is committed to the Padres, and we are happy to secure his rights through 2017.”

Last year, Maybin hit .264 with nine homers and 40 RBIs and stole 40 bases

Mat Latos to start season on DL

Padres general manager Jed Hoyer confirmed that pitcher Mat Latos will start the season on the disabled list.

“He’s turned a corner on this thing,” manager Bud Black said Monday, per Don Norcross of the San Diego Union-Tribune. “Our medical staff feels good about where this is.”

Latos, who last pitched on March 21st and experienced shoulder pain two days later, will go on the DL retroactive to March 22nd, which means he will be eligible to return as early as April 6th.

Per Norcross, Latos said that his shoulder has felt good the past two days and he'll throw tomorrow.

Last year, Latos finished with a 14-10 record and an ERA of 2.92 and 189 strikeouts. However, he lost his last five starts and allowed 20 earned runs in 22 innings during that span.

Previously, the Padres announced that Tim Stauffer would start Opening Day against the Cardinals on Thursday.

Jake Peavy to miss a month

The San Diego Padres are going to be without Jake Peavy for at least a month due to his injured ankle, according to the Associated Press.

Peavy initially injured the ankle while running the bases in his start after rejecting a trade that would have sent him to the White Sox.

Although he pitched with it taped since then, the extent of the injury is worse than originally thought.

"I was getting treatment and we were getting by," said Peavy. "Up until yesterday, I thought it was manageable. It could have gotten ugly if we didn't take the action that we did."

The Padres will start Josh Greer in Peavy's place tonight.

Peavy will wear a walking boot for the next four weeks.

With approximately a month and a half to go until the MLB trade deadline, this likely will end any chance of Peavy, who has a no-trade clause in his contract, getting traded this season.

Peavy says no to White Sox deal

Per the Chicago Sun-Times, the deal agreed upon by the San Diego Padres and Chicago White Sox to send Jake Peavy to Chicago has been vetoed. The Sun-Times reports that sources indicate Peavy has told the Padres that he won't accept the trade.

Although both teams agreed to the deal, Peavy has a no-trade clause in his contract.

Peavy spoke with his former Padres teammate Scott Linebrink about the team and playing for manager Ozzie Guillen.

"At this point, it's 50-50," Linebrink said, adding he spoke to Peavy with Sox general manager Ken Williams blessings. "It's his decision and his family's, but given the trade rumors that haven't come to fruition, especially with the Cubs, I think he might want to get this behind him. I'm sure it was tough for him to go back [to San Diego, after the near-trade. He's probably ready to put on whatever uniform he's going to have."

Peavy, who prefers to pitch in the National League, has $63 million left on his contract and is due $11 million this season.

Greg Maddux to have number retired by Braves

Greg Maddux will have his number (31) retired by the Atlanta Braves on July 17th.

From 1992 to 1998, Maddux was a dominant as any pitcher (perhaps ever). His highest ERA during that seven-year span was 2.72. And that season (1996) was significantly higher than the other six seasons. His second-worst ERA during that span was 2.36.

In his career, Maddux won four consecutive Cy Young awards (1992-1995) and eighteen Gold Glove awards.

Maddux, who played with the Cubs, Braves, Dodgers and Padres, finished his career with a 355-227 record, 3,371 strikeouts and an ERA of 3.16.
