but still an intimate & romantic wedding

Originally, Karla & Christian had planned to have their wedding in France, June 2021, but thanks to COVID, they had to postpone it.  Obviously Karla was devastated since she was like most women who have dreamed of their weddings since they were little girls.  Eventually she faced the reality that it was out of her control. So instead of just dwelling on all the things that went wrong, they decided to focus on their love and have a small civil ceremony with the people closest to their hearts and to keep their excitement alive for a church service/reception in France next summer (2022).

Christian’s sister  is a survivor from the 2016 Brussels airport terrorist attack. From that accident, she lost both her legs below the knee at the young age of 17 and has not been able to stand up since then.

It was an incredible moment they experienced at their ceremony. She had worked so, so hard to wear an exoskeleton which allowed her to stand at their wedding and walk towards Karla with it while she got ready for the wedding as well as standing along side the family in most of the pictures. Karla thinks that made her cry more than the actual wedding!

Kelli and Clay wanted to celebrate along the San Diego bay where they could marry the open-air feel of nature with a chic and clean wedding vibe. Their enclosed garden ceremony was filled with the most joyful and personalized ceremony from Clay’s grandfather that had everyone overflowing with smiles and laughter. The couple incorporated their personalities through sweet treats like custom labeled Hershey’s Kisses, a sweet painting of their beloved furry family member Frankie, and powerful song choices like “All For You” by OAR and “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” by Stevie Wonder.

These two were in sync every step of the day. From their vows where they each mentioned Kelli’s very okay obsession with Taco Bell to how they got the epic reception dance party started with glow batons! You never saw them sitting down for too long, instead they spent time truly being present with their guests making joyous memories all night long.

Allison & Aaron found their venue when COVID caused them to go a different direction. Like many couples over the past year they rolled with it and came up with a plan B. But then again they had last minute cancellations due to COVID in February and had to try again. With a wedding date of April 10th they needed to find another venue and FAST. Allison searched airbnb and found a very cute Spanish casita named Villa Francesca. She reached out to see if the owner would allow a wedding. Luck would have it that they were just starting out trying to market the home as a wedding venue, but due to COVID had to pumped the breaks on promoting the space.

They got back to her so fast and said, “it was funny she had asked and yes, yes she could get married there!” She was so enthusiastic when they spoke, it gave them hope that they would still have the wedding of their dreams. Having downsized from 100 people Allison wanted to make their now 26 person wedding feel extra special, so they decided to splurge on the details and believes it was so worth it. With the help of her incredible wedding planner they were able to get married and created the most beautiful space. People are still telling them how beautiful their wedding was and how much fun they had.

Bridgerton is set in the extravagant Regency era and focuses on the social season of England’s aristocratic families. For this shoot the team took those ideas and reintroduce them to the modern wedding world. 

 Keeping with the Regency era fashion while trying to modernize it as wearable for today’s couples was key to this shoot. The models are styled in gowns which have an empire cut, but in the chic minimal style that are trending now. An ornate embroidered gown was also chosen and paired with thigh-high lace up boots with glam make-up. We used heirloom, vintage wedding rings, but paired them with large geometric statement earrings and funky sunnies. 

Back in those days most couples only had immediate family in attendance for their wedding. Much like the micro-weddings of our current day pandemic weddings. The tablescape is a brunch set for twelve, since during that time period most weddings were celebrated in the morning followed by a late breakfast and would be for the entire wedding party.

The entire styling of this shoot was finding that gorgeous balance of pop and classical like a Billie Eilish song covered by a string quartet.

The satin buttons run fully down the back of the dress giving it a long and lengthened look.

Liris Crosse is a lover of people and a lover of love. As a child, she would go to the library and take out bridal magazines and imagine her wedding day. The gown, the flowers, the whole fairytale come true. Now as an adult, Liris works in the Bridal Industry as a Brand Ambassador for designer Maggie Sottero. She aspires to help change the old mentality of the industry and bring in a fresh perspective.

“I push and I speak out for size and racial diversity within our industry, it’s so important to see because there’s no cookie cutter for brides, we’re all different. Guess what? You can be plus size and still serve aspirational bridal fashion realness,” says Crosse.

As someone who speaks from the heart, Liris dreams of being someone that little girls can look up to. She has made a name for herself in the industry, both as a stunning model and as an advocate for size and color diversity. Liris uses her platform to work with multiple organizations that promote diversity & equity within the fashion industry.

One of these organizations is Models for Change Now, a Black model led collective of 200+ models who push for diversity within the model and fashion industry. They have created a petition asking for agency boards to pledge to have a minimum of 15% of their models be black as 15% is the population percentage of blacks in America. They are also working to make sure while on a shoot, there are capable hair and makeup artists available who “are skilled in working with black bodies, tones, and textures.” [Model Diversity Pledge on Change.org petition from Models for Change Now.]

In addition, she works with the Curvy Collective, a group focused on the bridal industry. Their main initiative is to push for diversity for plus size options within the industry. They challenge designers to go up in size to provide more options for plus size brides. The Curvy Collective is also working with designers to have more samples and sizes available for plus size brides when they go dress shopping.

“I don’t care if it doesn’t get as many likes as your other posts, you have to normalize posting different types of brides,” says Crosse. By diversifying your feed with women of all shapes, sizes, and colors, a business is saying, “We see you, we value you, please come into our store.”

Maggie Sottero has used a variety of models of ethnic backgrounds for many years. Recently, the push has been to see more plus size brides. When Liris joined the team as a Brand Ambassador, less than 20% of sales of Maggie Sottero dresses were plus size. For the last three years, Liris has modeled a plethora of gorgeous plus size gowns. In that time, the brand has grown their plus size audience and now approximately 25% of their sales are plus size gowns.

On a personal note, when given the opportunity to interview Liris, I got so excited because I wore Zandrina by Maggie Sottero at my wedding in January. When we initially went shopping and I said Yes to the dress, after I got home, I pulled up the dress on Maggie’s site to dream about my wedding day again. I was thrilled to see someone closer to my size (14) modeling the dress. It gave me the confidence that she looked so stunning, I could also look that good!

When I told Liris my story, her reaction was more than I could have ever hoped for. “If I can see someone who is close to my complexion or body type, people gravitate and appreciate seeing some type of representation. Seeing Tyra Banks or Cindy Crawford with their curves made me feel like I was seen and represented in the industry.”

After working with Maggie Sottero for several years, it becomes easier to know what you want in  a dress! When Liris’s time comes to be a bride, she’ll have a custom gown by Maggie Sottero. However, if there was no time for a custom, her favorite gown she’s modeled so far is the Brinkley Lynette.

Liris’s words of wisdom for any brides who are about to go dress shopping: “You don’t know til you try it, try whatever you want on, buy what you want, it’s your day!”

Lindsey and Christian were set to be married March 21, 2020 after 2 years of planning their dream wedding. The flowers were ordered, the food count was in, and family & friends were getting ready to get on flights to come celebrate as they were to say “I do”. Then the whole world stopped. COVID put a sudden halt to the day we had been imagining for so long.

After two venue changes, and with the unknown of when large gatherings would be allowed again, they decided to proceed with a micro wedding in Lake Tahoe. They had 25 of their closest family members there as they exchanged their vows. It was an intimate, cozy winter wonderland, and although not what they had originally pictured for themselves, it ended up being more than they could have ever imagined.

COVID has been exceptionally difficult for California wedding vendors, but we have so many incredible vendors in San Diego that have been there for their couples trying to have a wedding during these difficult times.  A perfect example is Savanna the make-up and hairstylist, Joe Cardillo and Iron & Fern all stuck with the bride throughout her 2 prior venue cancellations due to COVID restrictions that happened in the beginning. These vendors also decided to travel to the third venue for a micro wedding.  The bride is also the niece of Prema from pbStyle Photography who was there for the couple and found it to be one of the most emotional weddings to edit in her career.

Micro Wedding

Mariah and Reggie’s wedding was a mix of modern boho and fun. Mariah loves pampas grass and knew she wanted that as the focal point. They had a huge pampas arrangements at the alter and as a hanging arrangement and it sure was a wow! They didn’t want to go too over board, so they kept the bridesmaid and groomsmen attire modern and clean. 

Their reception had some corky boho decor which highlighted her personality. Their cake was such a fun twist. Very corky and bright colors! Mariah swears it tasted amazing!!!

Although Mariah & Reggie were able to keep their original wedding date, COVID did affect their wedding planning.  Coasterra was outdoors and accommodating while at the same time, being really careful with making sure there was a set seating chart so households that were not living together were 6 feet apart.  Their original reception site closed so they found an alternative, but had to cut their guest list in half.  As with all catering these days, buffets with people serving themselves are no longer an option. And of course there was plenty of hand sanitizer everywhere and mask wearing guidelines.

Some dresses have “V” backs, some have “V” fronts and others have both! It’s important on your wedding day and shoot that the dress is being worn by YOU. Things like bra straps, tan lines and other factors can distract from the beautiful gown you desire. Here are some things you should try with these dresses.

Hannah and Nick had to reschedule their wedding 3 different times at 3 different venues, before finally being able to have their wedding. It was an emotional rollercoaster to say the least.  Canceling their original plan for May 9th was definitely the hardest part since they had been planning their ‘perfect’ wedding for over a year and a half.  Their original venue, didn’t supply anything but the room, so they had to personally hire all vendors and thought they had pulled together the perfect team for their wedding.

Planning a wedding under the best of circumstances can be stressful, then add in COVID and it definitely makes everything more stressful. Since there was no end to the shelter-in-place in the foreseeable future and it was completely out of their control, Hannah and Nick made the decision to cancel their original wedding date four weeks before the wedding. There were so many mixed emotions, they were thankful their family & and friends were healthy, but also so sad and disappointed after planning every detail for two years.

Then they moved their date to December 6, 2020 at the same venue reasoning that in seven months things should be getting back to normal. In August the venue informed them that they were not allowing any receptions due to COVID restrictions.  So, they were forced to start the venue search all over again! They found an alternate venue, but had to settle on December 4th.  Three weeks prior to their third wedding date the new venue cancelled the event due to additional restrictions being put on their business. Hannah and Nick were devastated once again.

They did not to give up and started yet another venue search! Their closest friends and family had already made accommodations for December 4th so they were determined to make it happen then. They were fortunate to find the San Diego Mission Bay Resort.  They were available on December 4th and helped them plan their dream wedding in just three weeks!  They feel eternally grateful to the San Diego Mission Bay Resort and everyone who made their wedding better than their original plans!

Their original guest count was 180 and they had to narrow it down to 60, with 55 guests actually at their wedding.  Besides a much smaller guest list, due to the pandemic their were other things that they had to adjust for.

At the venue, everything had to be fully outdoors due to COVID restrictions.  Guests had to wear masks during the ceremony and any time they were out of their seat at both ceremony and reception.  There was no dancing or mingling allowed.  All ceremony seats were spaced 6 feet apart.  They had to group tables by family/household for the reception, ceremony, and rehearsal dinner. They had to create three different seating charts for all of those events.  And of course, they had individual hand sanitizers at each seat as well.

Hannah’s advice for any brides planning or rescheduling their wedding during this time is to be patient, flexible, and grateful for the little things.  It’s so easy to focus on things that may go wrong or may not go as planned, but a wedding is all about your love and commitment to each other–that’s all that ultimately matters.  Be patient with venues, vendors, and guests since everyone’s situation is different.  Be willing to make changes and adapt away from your ideal plans.  Enjoy your time being engaged because that only happens once in your life and it’s a very special time!  Even if hiccups or disasters happen along your wedding planning journey, you and your spouse will become stronger by getting through those tough times.

Tori & Eric were trying to please everyone else for their initial wedding plans and make sure their guests were going to enjoy themselves. Then the global pandemic hit, and their wedding went from planning on 150 guests, to ordering 20 chairs, and not being able to fill all of them because of COVID-19.

Their wedding turned into a magical, intimate ceremony only wedding, because receptions weren’t allowed.  After cancelling their original plans, they found Cuvier Park and thought it was perfect for their new micro-wedding. This wedding became a lush, tropical, intimate and very romantic ceremony. 

Even though they were unable to have a traditional reception, the night before the wedding they were able to make dinner reservations for up to 10 people at Olive & Basil in La Jolla. So, with eight of their friends and family they had the opportunity to celebrate a little more.

What advice would you give to other couples that are trying to figure out what to do about their upcoming wedding?

“I would say, don’t let other people make the call for you. (Which was the hardest part for us) If you have even a small interest in an elopement style wedding, or small intimate wedding, now is your time. DO IT. After all, getting married is about being there for each other NO MATTER WHAT. For better, or for worse, right? Well, now is your time to prove it to yourselves. 

Our videographer was able to do a live stream for us, and we were able to say hi to absolutely everyone who stuck around virtually. Pick what is most important to you, and what is less important. For us, the videographer, photographer and florist were incredibly important for us. I wanted gorgeous photos to hang on my wall, and an amazing video to be able to look back and show to people and say even in a global pandemic, we were so madly in love, that we didn’t want to wait.”

They had to make some adjustments, chairs were grouped by households, not isles, 6- feet apart. Instead of a live musician, they had a hand sanitizer station. Instead of matching bracelets for the bridesmaids, they now had matching masks.

Because of the global pandemic, they had their dream wedding. If they had to go back and do it again this way, they absolutely would. 

Since Tori & Eric were unable to have a reception with a wedding cake, they still wanted to send their guests home with a sweet treat from The Baked Bear.

Love Never Fails

The months before Ciera & Bruce’s wedding were some of the most overwhelming and stressful in most of her life. She felt like she didn’t even recognize her own wedding plans and was grieving the wedding the wedding that she had dreamed of.  Ironically, the wedding ended up exactly what they would have wanted.

They loved their more intimate setting and that they could be fully present in the day. During their little dinner reception, nearly everyone in their families did a speech or toast, sharing funny inside jokes and teary gratitude that they had found each other. These beautiful moments, of which were Ciera’s favorite from the day, wouldn’t have happened in their original big reception. It really ended up being a perfect day for them.

In Ciera’s brother’s speech, he added a quote from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows that just really summed it up.

Ginny – “Seems silly, doesn’t it? A wedding. Given everything that’s going on.”
Harry – “Maybe that’s the best reason to have it. Because of everything that’s going on.”

What made you decide to not postpone your original wedding plans, but keep your wedding date & make it smaller?

“We felt from very early on that we wanted to get married on our intended day no matter what. The important part of the event was marrying each other and that was what we kept as our compass. Early on in April, before we even knew the pandemic would affect our wedding, Bruce’s Dad (who was unable to travel to our wedding) had encouraged us to still proceed with the ceremony as best we could. He said that terrible things have happened in history and people still got married. His blessing meant so much to us and helped us proceed with our date. While we considered postponing our full wedding plan, we felt that we didn’t know when life would be “normal” and that felt uneasy to us. Of course, everyone’s opinion is different but this was how we coped and adjusted our plans.:

Are you happy with that decision?

“1000%! It was the perfect, intimate wedding we didn’t know we needed/wanted. Our wedding, to us, will forever be the light in a dark time. The skills and strength we used as a team to get thru wedding planning in a pandemic are resources we can tap into later in our relationship when we come across challenging times. There were many of times I cried about the “dream wedding” that felt stolen from us and all the planning and replanning that was required. Bruce was so supportive. On our wedding day, we felt such JOY that we had each other and were getting married…it was the best decision for us that we got married when we did.

I also would like to say we had wonderful vendors that did what they could to make the process easier on us.”

What advice would you give to other couples that are trying to figure out what to do about their upcoming wedding?

“I’d say for you and your future husband to make the decision. Everyone is going to have thoughts and opinions, which you can absolutely put into consideration, but Ultimately, it is your day! Wedding etiquette and traditions are out the window, so you can make the best decision for YOU. Whether that means waiting to have your large gathering, eloping in the desert, or a backyard wedding, there isn’t a right way or one way to do it. I’d also recommend making a decision and sticking with it. By making the decision to proceed with our July intimate wedding in early May, we had time to find a livestream vendor and send our guests Wedding Care Packages. Having time to replan was a huge benefit to us.

When our plans changed, I tried to add some sugar to our lemonade. I had wanted to do carved name tags originally, but for a 200 person wedding it wasn’t a cost I could justify. For 16 person wedding in a pandemic – I think I can give myself that joy of costly name tags! I also bought our guest book puzzle prior to our new wedding plan. I wanted to still incorporate it and feel like our original guests were ‘there’. It’s okay to have some fun with the new plans. It might not be the wedding you envisioned, but you can add elements to your new wedding that you couldn’t have before.”

Christina and Andy booked Bali Hai thinking it was the ideal place to get married, since that was where they had met. Unfortunately, they were going to have to wait longer than they wanted for an available date. Fortunately, they got a call a few days later to let them know there was a cancellation date, but only three months away. After a lot of scrambling and hard work, they were able to pull together a wedding that was everything they had dreamed of.

The look and feel of this wedding was actually inspired by the 1954 version of ‘Sabrina’ – with the backdrop of a beautiful San Diego sunset! The ceremony was held in the Garden and was very personal, a close friend of the family was their officiant, and their female friends and family members shared in the Persian sofreh part of the evening as well. Everyone enjoyed cocktail hour with beautiful flamenco guitar music and firelight before heading to the ballroom reception. There they enjoyed great food, prayers and toasts from their family, and lots and lots of dancing.

Crystal and Joey’s original plan was to have their wedding at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego July 4, 2020.  They had already postponed it once before and were determined to make it happen this time. With so many of their guests being from out of town, they decided instead to host their wedding virtually from their home to keep everyone safe. They had most of the traditional elements of any wedding, a short, but sweet ceremony exchanging vows, first dance and cake cutting. However, they had to make a few adjustments to make things work. Their wedding arch was made out of a squat rack decorated by the bride with flowers. Crystal had a dress reveal with her bridesmaids, her mother and the mother of the groom by zoom. Speeches from the bride’s family, the grooms family, Matron of Honor and the two co- Best Men had to be pre-recorded. 

After the live event concluded, they took pictures on their property outside and with their handsome dog, Kudo. Having Kudo running around was one of their favorite parts during their virtual wedding. He dressed in his best fur, and totally stole the show! They had a really fun time and were truly able to capture and share their love with their families and friends.

We asked Crystal and Joey if they were happy with their decision to have a virtual wedding.

“Yes, we are very happy with our decision! Most of our guests were traveling internationally, as well as from the east coast, and with border closures, this way we could include everyone from a safe distance, ensuring zero health risks for all. At the end of the day, we considered that the main point of getting married is to celebrate our love for one another, regardless of life’s obstacles or challenges.”

Here’s their advice for any couples out their considering switching to a virtual wedding:

“The advice that we would give a couple who is considering a virtual wedding, is to remember that the day is about you two and your love. Nothing will be perfect, apart from the moment you celebrate your love for each other, wherever that may be. We felt as though we would feel lonely having a virtual wedding, but we learned that it turned out to be quite the opposite. We got to invite 5 times the amount of guests that our original venue could occupy. We also felt that the virtual wedding allowed the camera crew to get different angles and close ups to make it feel much more intimate, and give every guest a front row seat – kind of like a basketball, sometimes sitting at home on your couch watching the big screen is much better than being stuck in the nosebleeds, not knowing what the score is.”

Today’s couples are about personalization and experiences. Crystal and Joey love cooking, so we created the kitchen herb garden being a sense of storytelling to this styled shoot. With various shades of green to reflect the colors found in home garden herbs, a pop of femininity with blush, mauves and a statement blue (which happens to be the Pantone of 2020) which balances it with a masculine tone. A modern, delicate and romantic aesthetic featuring multiple varieties of herbs and plant life with a soft balance of color and tactile textures help provide a feeling of life and love.

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park was an adventurous location for Karan and Trenton’s destination wedding.  They exchanged their vows with exotic birds in the background, took pictures with a slew of animals and enjoyed a “party animal” themed reception. Afterwards, their guests were treated to a safari ride through the park.

The inspiration for this invitation suite was “Italian Villa”.

An Italian Villa has the feeling of being outdoors — in nature’s backyard. Inspired by the landscape, the warmth of the sun and the airy blue sky that extends over the horizon.

The color palette is a smokey blue with a caramel-color wax seal for the pop of warmth. The paper is Canaletto; it’s texture has a touch of cotton. Not only is this paper made in the tradition of Italian paper-making. The calligraphy is in a script style called Copperplate, and the suite is wrapped in a watercolor-washed velum with a twine wrap.

A variety of flowers including hydrangea, pin cushion, ranunculus, peony, dahlia, roses and greenery blend together effortlessly.  In fabulous shades of peach, pinks, taupes and whites are ideal for this smaller more intimate wedding.  Smaller centerpieces were used for most of the table with the exception of one focal point that appears the centerpiece is growing out of a tree trunk.

What made Lisa & Ami’s wedding unique was venturing away from some of the “forced” elements that happens during typical weddings. Jennifer and Cameron picked their wedding location because it was right down the street from where they met and where they love to vacation. Infused with Indian culture, the invitations were designed with a bright, bold color palette. Inspired by the mandala, that pattern was used throughout to coordinate. Also used was an intricate die cut pocket for the invitation which was placed behind the invitation. It held the reception details along with an RSVP card and envelope.  The envelope liner used the same mandala pattern to complete the look. For the reception table, menu cards sat inside a pocket personalized for each guest underneath a silk napkin. Guests also had a matching place card at their setting which complimented the table decor and floral.

About the cake:

A grand four tiered wedding cake incorporating pastel hues in alternating aqua green and dusty pink, with gold embellishments.  This cake will serve over 300 guests, including two alternating tiers in Swiss black forest and white Bavarian raspberry cake. Final touches with a golden cake topper to mach the gold detail in the tiers and pink orchids.

After over 10 years at San Diego Style Weddings and countless styled shoots with hundreds of different gowns, last weekend I was looking at gowns from a different perspective….  this time I am the mother of the bride!  Fortunately, my daughter lives in Phoenix and we were able to get one of the first appointments after shops in Arizona were allowed to open on a limited basis, but shopping was a different experience.

Masks required and no bride tribe allowed! The first shop we went to she was allowed to have Mom, Nana and Maid of Honor who zoomed with the rest of her girls. The second shop she was told only ONE person could accompany the bride.  Luckily, we were the last appointment in the afternoon and both Mom and Nana were able to be there after having our temperatures taken and with lots of social distancing. Another drawback because of Covid-19, she could only try on five gowns since they all had to be sanitized after each bride tried them on.

Thanks to Sam at Suzanne’s Bridal Boutique, my daughter found the one and said yes to the dress!

After all, marriage is indeed a marathon, not a sprint!
