Hey everyone, I wanted to share my 2010 in a nutshell because you all have been a part of the whole experience in some shape or form. I decided January 1st of 2010 I was going to travel the world for a year to gather information for my company Sand Snow and Street. I set out to create a global network, learn from the best coaches/athletes in the world and help create movement opportunities for underprivileged children. Little did I know how life changing the trip and 2010 would be (PLEASE SEE VIDEO BELOW.)

The big picture

After spending a week with Spida Hunter in Christchruch, New Zealand I still find myself processing the lessons I learned. Spida Hunta is a coach/trainer (for MMA fighters and general population), a father, a soon to be husband and an overall good guy (unless he’s ground and pounded you). Spida like many of the other veteran strength and conditioning coaches I’ve met on my trip makes complex ideas simple to understand.

So after spending a week with Spida at his house and at the East Side Barbell Club in Christchurch I came away with three major take homes:

1. It aint where you’re from it’s where you’re at (CULTURE IS EVERYTHING)

2. A good coach instills new beliefs and helps break negative ones

3. A strong tribe (group)brings out the best in it’s members

Australia is where it's at

After attending the Australian Strength and Conditioning Association (ASCA) two things were very apparent: 1. Australia has some of the best strength and conditioning coaches in the world and 2. They know how to have a good time. The ASCA’s current president is Dan Baker who made sure all of the international visitors felt right at home. Dan is a class act and with a motto of HARDEN THE F%$& UP I liked him instantly. Dan along with many of the other presenters at the conference hold PhD’s but are also amazing practioners. This in my opinion makes Australia the leaders in sports science (SEE VIDEO BELOW).

Training Lions or Coaching People

What makes a great coach? How do you become a great coach? Who do you learn from to be a great coach? Are their different types of coaches? What‘s the difference between trainers and coaches? Do great coaches share similar qualities? These are all questions I have been searching for answers to match them on my trip around the globe. After traveling for eight months and 16 countries I realized I came on this trip not to be a better strength and conditioning coach but to become a better coach.

Brillant at the basics

Here’s a guest blog by Dewey Nielsen. Dewey has carved out a great name for himself as one of the top S&C coaches around. Dewey’s article hits the nail on the head to focus on the 98% to improve athletes and general population as opposed to the 2% (doing 1 arm kart wheels on bosu balls).

After visiting and observing five of the top S&C coaches in the U.S., Japan and England (Robert Dos Remedios, Adam Trypas, Nick Grantham, Duncan French and Neil Parsley) I found three similarities they all shared:

Programming on a macro and mico level

They understand and utilize progressions for their clients/athletes

They are amazing at coaching lifts ( I figured they would be doing some crazy exercises I had never seen before but they were doing all of the core lifts cleans, front squats, pushing and pulling to perfection).(( Brilliant at the basics))

My take away after visiting about 20 commercial and mom pop’s gyms around the globe was personal trainers around the globe need to implement the three steps mentioned above. Over time I have seen amazing trainers but I would say 80% do not program and need to learn the basics to be brilliant ( it’s a long way to go when you don’t know where you’re going). So read below as Dewey drops some truth!

Brillant At the Basics

By Dewey Nielson

What works best for a fighter? Linear or undulating periodization? Kettlebells or dumbbells? Olympic lifts from the floor or hang? What do you do for GPP? What exercises do you use to train pulsing? Did you grow a beard to look more like Ryan Reynolds (has nothing to do with this article but I do get asked that)?

Fit pros unite against cancer

On April 26th 1994 cancer changed my life forever when my dad passed away from bladder cancer. The experience of losing my dad to cancer at an early age showed me the importance of family and close friends during tough times. My dad’s death brought out the best of close family friends and family members who gathered in that tough time and helped us out. Cancer showed me it’s not about having the right thing to say, bring or do when somebody close to you is sick with cancer but to have the courage to be there with him them is what matters most. Cancer has had a dramatic affect on my life and led me into a life I love as a fitness professional of helping others. As a fit pro family let’s unite to fight cancer.

For information about Fit Pros Unite Against Cancer visit our blog site http://fitprosuniteagainstcancer.wordpress.com/
or email me at chad@sandsnowandstreet.com

NOT GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP?

NOT EATING REGULARLY?

NOT MOVING/PLAYING ENOUGH?

NOT GETTING ENOUGH TIME FOR YOU, FAMILY AND/OR FRIENDS?

Then most likely you’ve got a bad case of the grumbles……

We’ve all had the “grumbles” but as we get older we get better at hiding them. Right now you’re probably thinking WTF are the grumbles?
