Microsoft's Stephen Sinofsky says Windows 7 isn't degrading PC batteries. Rather, deeper detection in Windows 7 is flagging batteries performing at or below 40 percent of capacity. Vista and Windows XP do not have the battery detection provided in Windows 7. Some users are continuing to dispute Microsoft's stand on Windows 7 battery problems.
Russia is a notoriously lucrative market for piracy, with nook-and-cranny peddlers popular and trading openly, despite the fact that Russian authorities have sought to make examples of violators. Microsoft says up to 71 percent of retail outlets in some regions vended illicit software; Microsoft wants the Russian government to take more action.

Apple, Inc.'s iPad hasn't arrived yet, and analysts are already predicting a price discount amid low demand. Early adopters who paid full price for Apple's iPhone may be especially shy about buying the iPad. An analyst said $500 is a price point that's hard for consumers to justify. Cannibalization is not expected to be a major iPad problem.

The race between Intel and AMD is significant because essentially all modern personal computers are built with microprocessors, the "brains" of PCs, made by either Intel or AMD. AMD's 32-nanometer chips won't appear in personal computers until 2011. It has argued that circuitry size isn't as important as performance and graphics.
The Department of Justice has raised antitrust concerns about the proposed book settlement between Google and publishers. The DOJ called the proposal "a bridge too far" that would give Google a monopoly, shutting out competitors like Amazon.com, and boosting Google's search engine. The DOJ wants the court to order more discussions.
Does Apple have your best interest in mind, or is it just making another savvy competitive move with its latest decree? Apple has told developers no more location-based ads on iPhone apps are allowed, although "beneficial" location-based info is still OK. Apple may be trying to protect iPhone users from ads or... planning its own next strategic move.

The tech sector has lost steam despite good news on both the U.S. economy and from technology heavyweights like Microsoft and Apple. But there has been a broad tech sell-off. The main reason for tech's underperformance may just be that the sector grew too popular too fast. Analysts, however, have become more optimistic about tech in 2010.
The Symbian Foundation says the open status sets the stage for global innovations. But Symbian remains linked to Nokia, and that could discourage further development of Symbian.
