We’ve told you a little bit about Shawn Mckenna’s fresh and innovative concept, but now we are happy to say that Sama- Zama will be joining us at the Market! The lunch service will focus on healthy salads, soups and sandwiches on fresh-baked bread. Soups are his specialty, so you know those will be delicious! The best part is that the basic stocks will be made ahead of time, but all of the vegetables and proteins will be cooked to order. Isn’t that how it should be? And here it will be! For dinner, Shawn will utilize the techinques he has honed in 12+ years of cooking professionally to produce an ever-changing array of tapas-style small plates. Take a look at this video Shawn has put together to give you a better idea of what he has in store for us.

Sama-Zama will begin construction shortly. It will be located in the El Dorado Building across from Pizza Bocca Lupo.

Trivia night at San Pedro Square Market!

Brainstormer Pub Quiz is a Live trivia contest held every Monday night, at 7:00 PM in THE BAR at San Pedro Square Market. The bar is located in the historic El Dorado Bakery building, and has knowledgeable staff, excellent management, and a wide selection of specialty cocktails,as well as draft beer and wines. You can also enjoy deliciuos food from a variety of great vendors in the San Pedro Square Market.
Bring a team of players, fly solo at the bar, or find a team to join up with at the Pub Quiz Regulars! The team with the most correct answers at the end of the game wins a prize and the illustrious pride of being the "Winning Team of the Week."
Artichokes can be very intimidating if you have never attempted to cook them. Many say that they have never tried them because it seems like too much work, but this post is going to change your mind we just know it!

Artichoke season is around late March all the way through to June! When looking for the best kind at your local farmers market or grocery store, you want to look for ones with closed heads. You want those leaves to be pretty tight and it is okay if the stem is brown, just means it was freshly cut that day! When you get them home, you want to store them loosely wrapped in plastic in the fridge. Fresh artichokes can last up to a week, but like many veggies, they are best used shortly after harvest.

Now where most get scared of artichokes are their thorns, but all you need is a nice pair of kitchen scissors and about 30 seconds per artichoke to simply trim off the thorns on the outside leaves. Cooking can be quite simple also. The easiest and more well known way to cook artichokes is to steam them in about a ½ inch of water with some lemon juice squeezed into it. Bring it to a boil, cover and reduce the heat to simmer. That is it! Here is a great recipe to use to dip your leaves into that we love!

Aioli (Garlic Mayonnaise)

It only takes about 10 minutes

Ingredients

1 egg

1 Tbsp. lemon juice

1 clove garlic, crushed or minced

½ tsp. Dijon style mustard

½ to ¾ cup olive oil

Salt and some freshly ground black pepper (to your liking)

Directions

1. In a small bowl, whisk egg, lemon juice, garlic, and mustard together.

2. Set bowl on a silicone oven pad or wrap the bottom in a kitchen towel to hold the bowl still on the counter without having to hold it.

3. Whisk constantly and add oil, drop by drop, allowing each addition to incorporate into the egg mixture before adding more. As more oil is incorporated, you can add the oil more quickly.

4. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve immediately or cover and chill for up to two days.

Enjoy!

We recomend picking up fresh artichokes at the Farmer's Market in downtown San Jose. The farmer's market is located at San Pedro Square Market and is open from 10am until 2pm every Saturday.

BLUSH Raw Bar and Lounge opens at San Pedro Square Market

Blush Raw Bar and Lounge, at San Pedro Square Market, is the newest place to dine in San Jose.

This restaraunt is an amazing new raw food bar lounge with one-of-a-kind cocktails, small plates with fresh ingredients, sushi and oysters.

Blush is located in San Pedro Square Market and has a come-as-you-are, relaxed and contemporary atmosphere. An excellent place which provides people an opportunity to socialize with live music, food, cocktails and exceptional service.

Blush has very a distinct vibe. The dining area has small four-person tables that surround the sushi bar. Adjacent to the open dining section is the main bar. This area has a industrial feeling to it, with a high ceiling, exposed metal girders that is illuminated with hanging lanterns.
You can also dine and enjoy one of Blush's many unique cocktails in the outdoor plaza of San Pedro Square Market. This is great if you are a sports fan because the Market has a large projection screen for you to watch your favorite sporting event.

A cousin of the pear, these succulent treats are typically seen in grocery stores, farmers markets, and ethnic food stores.

Asian pears differ from the traditional European ones. These pears are usually round, firm to touch when ripe, and are ready to eat after harvest. Asian pears reach prime quality when ripened on the tree, much like an apple and peach. Asian pears are crisp, juicy, and slightly sweet with some tartness, especially near the core.

There are several Asian pear varieties available. Japanese pears are more round in shape, while the Chinese pears are more oval or pear-shaped.

In the United States, the Japanese type of Asian pear called 20th Century or Nijisseki is the most popular. It is easily recognized by its round shape and smooth yellow skin. Other common varieties include the Japanese bronze-toned Hosui pear and the pear-shaped Ya Li, a pale-green Chinese variety.

Selection

Select the most fragrant and un-bruised fruit with little to no brown spots. Ripe Asian pears are hard and do not soften. They are ready to eat when purchased.

Storage

Asian pears are known for keeping well. Store pears a week at room temperature or up to three months in the refrigerator.

Here's a great recipe for you to try at home:

Asian Pear Slaw with Chilies
Makes 6 servings
Each serving equals 1/2 cup of fruit or vegetables
6 celery ribs

1 large Carrot Julienned

1 medium Apple (seasonal) diced
4 Tbsp fresh lime juice
4 Tbsp seasoned rice vinegar
1 tsp ginger root
6 Asian Pears, sliced ¼-inch thick
3 scallions, thinly sliced on diagonal

1 tsp sugar

¼ cup dried cranberries (optional)
¼ cup Cilantro leaves
½ tsp Fresno chili or Jalapeno chili, finely chopped

Whisk together juice, vinegar, and ginger and stir in celery and remaining ingredients with salt and pepper to taste. Use Kosher salt if you have it, as it adds a boost to the flavor profile.

Let stand at room temperature for at least 15 minutes before serving. However, the longer the slaw has to marinate the more robust the flavor profile.

Downtown San Jose Event: Cinequest Film Festival

Looking for something to do in the upcoming weeks? Starting February 28th, Cinequest returns to Downtown San Jose, showcasing innovative films for their annual festival. Cinequest is a film festival that pushes the limit; they have found a way to take the power of technology and creatively showcase it to their audience. In other words, they are doing things with technology that others wish they could do and it is going to be happening right here in San Jose and we all have the chance to enjoy it. The festival will take place from late February until early March, showcasing premiere films that give new artists a chance to show off their talents. The screenings are located throughout Downtown San Jose within walking distance of several yummy places to eat! It is suggested that you buy your tickets ahead of time, but it is not a must, which makes the festival a good choice for a last minute date night. They even have student prices! Audiences are in for a real treat, as Cinequest is known to provide amazing quality and an enjoyable overall experience. Let’s not do the normal candy, roses, balloons thing. Lets get creative, personal and most importantly as easy as we can this year! The best ideas and gifts are the ones you make yourself and sometime tend to even be the cheapest ones to give!

10 Simple and Great Ideas:

1. An incredibly nice and thoughtful gesture is to write a letter or a poem. You don’t have to be a poet either! Just write down how you feel about the person, how important they are to you. I bet this is way better than a box a chocolates (or at least a close second).

2. Along the lines of a letter is filling a jar with little love notes.

3. Suggest cooking a meal together! Could be a favorite food for both or a new one you can explore together.

4.Walk around a favorite part of town, stopping at a nice local bar for a glass of wine and appetizers. (Perhaps Vino Vino!)

5. Plan a scavenger hunt sending your valentine all around town while you get dinner ready! This might take some time, but your valentine will appreciate the time you put into this idea.

6. Buy them 1 of their favorite flower. Doesn’t need to be an entire bouquet, the important part is to remember which is their favorite.

7. Make a mixed CD of your favorite songs that remind you of that person. Include why you picked those tracks.

8. Pack a lunch and go to the park for a picnic! Lets take it back to our childhood and go swing on the swings.

9. Let the person know you are thinking about them, send email, text, voicemails, and even a letter in the snail mail! Your valentine will know how much you are thinking about them and care.

10. Take your Valentine to San Pedro Square Market! Enjoy good music, food, drinks, and simply enjoy the company of one another.

Here is a rundown of the special offers the Market Tenants will be offering tomorrow night:

Vino Vino is offering 25% off wine pours for ladies
Pizza Bocca Lupo is offering 15% off all desserts
Little Chef Counter is offering a 3-course prix fixe: House Salad, Pan-roasted Salmon, and White Chocolate Bread Pudding for $24/person from 5pm-close.

Bad Ideas: Don’t forget! As much as your valentine might say they really don’t care what you do if anything at all, which might be true, still take the time to let that person verbally know how important you are to them. Valentines day or not, this is not a bad idea. Also, don’t do something that you know your valentine doesn’t care for. Try to be considerate even with the minor details. There might be a Sharks game on that night, or a new Glee on, but lets try to think of the other person for a change guys!

Busy Weekend Ahead at the Market

This coming weekend is going to be a great one at San Pedro Square Market. Pearl Alley’s blend of blues and rock 'n’ roll is influenced by the vocal style of Janis Joplin and defined by the blistering lead guitar of David Crane.

Saturday will be the busiest day of the week by far. First, we have a baby shower taking place in the public seating area, which will be catered by Pizza Bocca Lupo and Little Chef Counter.

Downtown Ice opened on November 18th , my family and I enjoyed skating under the circle of palms in downtown San Jose. Downtown Ice is located in between the San Jose Museum of Art and Fairmont Hotel in downtown San Jose. The ice rink will be open from November 18th through January 29th, 2012. Kristi Yamaguchi, who is best known for her 1992 Olympic Gold Medal will be at the Opening Ceremony 5 p.m. Monday, November 21. Yamaguchi, who has always supported the downtown ice, will not be performing but her former skating club the Sliver Stars Synchronized Skating Group will be performing a dance.

Downtown Ice is a time for friends and family to gather and celebrate holiday activities. Along with ice skating there are a ton of fun filled holiday events starting with Christmas in the Park, riding the wonderland amusements, and watching live performances such as, “The Nutcracker” at the San Jose performing arts and “A Christmas Carol” at San Jose Repertory Theater. The ice rink is open daily from 5-9pm on weeknights and 11 am to midnight on weekends except Sundays.

Admission prices:

Children 10- younger $13,

11-older $15.

The admission price includes ice skating time and also the rental skates.

It’s so good for you and you can dress it up a million different ways. Here is a quick recipe to spice up your Edamame. This is a great snack for kids, and a great trick for entertaining you guests.

I generally use the Edamame from Trader Joes, because it’s fast and easy. But you can use any brand. In a wok or a non-stick fry pan heat up 3 tablespoons of sesame oil on medium to high heat. Add the Edamame and toss several times to coat evenly. I let the Edamame sear for a solid 3-5 minutes, tossing frequently, so that a nice crust begins to form. Add garlic, ponzu, black & white sesame seeds, shiso powder, and seaweed (optimal). Once the Edamame has been coated evenly pour into a serving dish and sprinkle with kosher or sea salt. *Tip- some of the ingredients will stick to the sided of your wok simply, use a plastic spatchula to remove excess num-nums and add them to your serving dish. Also, you can spice up this great dish by adding sriracha, wasabi, spicy yellow mustard, or your favorite peppers or hot sauces just make sure you let people know!

Serve with wasabi, sriracha, soy sauce. Your guests will not hate this. I promise.

The Sharks Need to K.I.S.S.

Keep it simple, stupid. The Sharks should have that mounted above everyone’s lockers inside the San Jose Arena because every player should be reminded of that daily. After watching the home games against The Penguins and The Predators, and comparing them to their latest road trip, its like watching a different team when the Sharks are at home. They also seem to not play with any sense of urgency until they go down by a few goals. It’s like they’re a high schooler procrastinating their 10-page term paper until the night before and then staying up all night to write it. Sometimes it gets done (like Pittsburgh) and sometimes it fails (like Anaheim). It's annoying and it needs to stop in order for them to be an elite team that will win a cup soon.

The San Jose Sharks have the problem of having great and talented players on their team yet, no one player that will step up and take command. I have seen countless chances on goal wasted because of one too many passes or one too many dekes. Instead of being the man, it’s like they pass it off to be nice or to spread the love. Just score, dammit. Someone be the selfish one and bury the puck into the net. I know it is easier said than done but this is getting out of hand lately at home games. We need some goals and we need them before going down in the game.

One thing that Todd McLellan did that I was yelling for after the first period of the Pittsburgh game was change up the line combos (maybe he heard me?). The top two lines were clearly not into the game but the third and fourth lines were actually getting pressure in the Pittsburgh zone with turnovers and puck possession. Moving Jamie McGinn up to the top line when he got the tying goal was great to see and I was happy he got that goal after the hard work he put in all game long. Hard work will beat skill 95% of the time and the top two lines better wake up to that. Looking at these lines of practice from Friday makes me happy since there is a hard working player on every line.

The Sharks top guys need to put in more work and pass less to start their scoring prowess once again. I still firmly believe that Joe Thornton can be a 100+ point player like when we first got him in 2006 and Marleau could be a 40 goal scorer on his wing. Pavelski is already on his way to a 96 point season if he keeps his pace up (doubtful though). All the potential of these guys kill me as a fan.

There is nothing more frustrating than watching someone play that has all the potential in the world to be great but only to wastes it away due to lack of hard work. I hope the San Jose Sharks realize their potential this year and makes something of it. I see it already on the third and fourth lines and that gives me hope. I know it is only November, but setting a tone early in the season will only help habits later and in playoffs. And by looking at how Detroit is doing scares me as that could be the Sharks in a few years….

Throw in school, soccer practice, clubs and of course work, its not easy to keep coming up with new recipe's. Here is a quick, easy recipe that takes no time to make and saves you time on the clean up.

Crock pot recipe's have saved me and my family hours of preparation and clean up. We prep everything the night before and store the crock pot in the fridge. In the morning we take it out and set it on low and by the time we come home we have a nutritious dinner waiting for us. The first recipe is slow cooked Greek chicken and brown rice. I usually buy the brown rice from Trader Joe's, it heats up in 5 minutes. It's a healthy alternative to white rice and your kids won't know the difference.

Instructions:

From your local grocery store purchase an 8 pack of chicken. (We but thighs and wings, but feel free to use your favorite cuts). Clean and wash the chicken throughly making sure to trim any excess fat. Pat dry with a paper towel. Next take your crock pot bowl and add the chicken, fresh garlic is always best but garlic powder will suffice, thyme, rosemary, freshly ground black pepper, and lemon. Mix the herbs and spices with about 3-5 Tablespoons of E.V.O.O (Extra Virgin Olive Oil) then add 1/4 -1/2 can of chicken broth. Mix up throughly and let sit over night. Before you leave for work, set the crock pot to low and let is simmer all day 6-8 hours. You can cook it in 4 hours if you leave it on high. That's it. Your ready for a great family dinner.

The San Jose Sharks season has finally begun and I got to go to my first game this past Monday night against the Ducks. Although the Sharks didn’t win the game nor play well throughout it, the fans were a pretty raucous bunch – more so than normal. Part of it could be because the Sharks haven’t won since their season opener, but another part of it could be the new fans the Sharks and NHL have attracted this year.

With the NBA in the beginning of their lockout and baseball wrapping up, the NHL is getting a lot more popular with the casual sports fan as it is that missing sports void in between Sundays. The NHL has the largest die-hard fans but lacks the popularity from bandwagoners. I think most of those people stick to the NBA as their third sport and the NBA is taking its fans for granted with the lockout (remember, I am talking casual NBA fans, not the die-hards). Don’t be surprised if the NHL becomes the number 3 sport in the US in place of the NBA by next season since most of those bandwagoners are moving on.

Coming back to the Sharks, these new fans need some lessons on how to watch hockey while at the San Jose Arena. Consider this the hockey etiquette rules for fans:

1. This isn’t baseball so stay in your seat and wait until a stoppage before getting up. This could be my favorite thing to yell out when people are nonchalantly getting to their seats during play. Hockey is a sport that is played whistle to whistle. Football is too, but in hockey the whistles are fewer and farther between. Stay in your seat because getting up blocks the view of every row behind you and a lot can happen in those 30 seconds it takes for you to read your ticket correctly.

2. Lean back in your seat. Same concept as the first one except this is where you are actually sitting in your seat. Due to the architecture of the seats (at least in the upper deck) being so steep in the San Jose Arena, leaning forward will block everyone’s view behind you. Instead of leaning forward to see a play, move side to side through the holes of people in front of you.

3. Ask questions and be social around you. Hockey fans and players are often the best in all of sports. I love when people ask me questions on what happened, what the whistle was blown for or what penalty was called and why. Don’t be shy; get engaged in the game and those around you!

4. Stay until the end no matter what. In hockey, 2.5 seconds is long enough to score a goal off of a faceoff with room to spare. And no, it isn’t like the NBA where the last 30 seconds takes 20 minutes either. Watch this clip of Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals tie up the game and tell me your stomach wasn’t in knots in anticipation.

5. Enjoy yourself and be respectful. Remember that there are families with kids at the game so keep the profanity down a couple notches. Be creative and humorous with your heckling but also respectful of those around you. Also, if you get asked or yelled at from the person behind you to sit down or lean back, don’t stand up and faceoff with them ready to fight (yes, I have witnessed this too many times not to add that in here).

There you have it, the five basic rules to live by when going to a Sharks game for your first time. I am sure you could think of more to add to this list, so feel free to put them in the comments. The NHL is growing so for all you hockey veterans, expect to have newbies going to games for their first time all year. Hockey is generally a game that new fans fall in love with after attending a live game. Welcome anyone new and answer any questions they might have. For all you new fans of the game going to the Shark Tank this year – have fun and don’t say I didn’t warn you about the etiquette.
