When a Christmas tree is cut, over half of its weight is water. It immediately begins to dry out. With the right Christmas tree stand and proper care, you can maintain the freshness of your Christmas tree. You don’t have to have a floor covered with needles and an extreme fire hazard in your front room. All you need is a little planning and the right equipment.

Here are some tips for keeping your tree at its most beautiful.

• Start by picking the best tree you can.  It should be heavy and feel wet.  When you choose your tree, make sure that the “handle” at the bottom is long enough to allow the trunk to fit into your tree stand.  If not, you can trim or cut the lower branches away.
• To make sure that your new tree gets enough water inside where it counts, make a fresh cut to remove a 1⁄4″ to 1″ thick disk of wood from the base of the trunk before putting it into your Christmas tree stand.  Make the cut perpendicular to the stem axis – not a wedge shape, just nice and flat and straight across.

• When you bring the tree inside, put your tree in the xmas tree stand and fill it with water right away.  In any case, do it within two hours of trimming off the trunk.

Trim It and Place It

• Keep your tree away from sources of heat (fireplaces, heaters, heat vents, direct sunlight). Lowering the room temperature will also slow the drying process, resulting in less water consumption each day.

Keep It Wet!

• Check your tree stand daily to keep the water level up above the base of the tree. This is especially important for the first few days where a tree can soak up literally gallons of water.
• If the trunk becomes dried out, the tree will no longer be able to take up water, even if the trunk is re-submerged.   Remember that clean water is all you need to maintain freshness.
