Fedora 13 Features Preview

Goddard is the codename for the latest version of the bleeding edge Linux distribution, Fedora 13. Eve before the release of Fedora 12 there were new feature plans for Fedora 13. New features continue to be added to the feature plans of Fedora 13 scheduled for a planned release on May 11, 2010. The Fedora 13 feature list includes a number of features that didn't make it in time for Fedora 12. The feature list includes NFSv4 protocol by default, support for mounting NFS servers over IPv6, and yum language package plug-in. It's almost time for Fedora 13 feature freeze and we hardly expect any new last minute additions. With most accepted Fedora 13 features highlighted on Fedora Project Wiki we decided to provide a comprehensive preview of the Linux distribution.

We would be discussing on the key features in Fedora 13 that have been accepted.

Btrfs system rollback support

Since November last year there were talks on inclusion of Btrfs system rollback support in Fedora 13. The feature will allow automatic and manual disk partition backups. Compared to other Linux file-systems Btrfs is flexible, and allows support for snapshots. It automatically creates a file-system snapshot before each yum transaction. In case the RPM packages are touched causing havoc on the system or any other problem, user can simply reboot and choose an earlier Btrfs snapshot to boot. The only concern could be that Btrfs file-system is not yet stable. Currently, it is available as an install time option for Fedora Linux. The feature has been updated and is now 80% complete.

Anaconda Storage Filtering

Anaconda's storage configuration was rewritten from scratch in F11 to address several design limitations and replace outdated chunks of code. Still there are number of outstanding problem areas that remain. This page tracks the progress. The device also documents the storage device filtering design and test requirements.

ColorManagement

Fedora like other Linux distros in general doesn't offer quality color management in key applications by default. Windows and OS X have integrated color management features in their working patterns that offer great effect. It provides an easy way to manage and assign profiles in Fedora for creative people to see the same color they just scanned. In Fedora 13 users would see the same color when the document is printed.

Gnome 2.30

Fedora 13 would include GENOME 2.30. This will ensure that Fedora ships with the current version of Genome desktop. It would stay in sync with upstream.

KDE 4.4

Fedora 13 would rebase KDE to 4.4 version. It would include new features such as PolicyKit 1 KAuth backend and improved PulseAudio integration. IN addition it would have better PulseAudio integration in Phonon and KMix and knetworkmanager. KDE remains a popular desktop environment for Fedora users as its feature rich and stable.
Easier Python Debugging

The gbd debugger had been extended to provide detailed report on the internals of the Python 2 and Python 3 runtimes. The Backtraces that involve Python can be seen bydefault revealing mixed C and Python-level information on what such processes are doing. This ability is unique to Fedora and valuable for Python developers would seek additional visibility into their CPython processes. This would be of great help for developers making it much easier to read backtraces when a library wrapped by python encounters a bug.
KDE PolicyKit One Qt

Fedora 13 will have PolicyKit One support to Qt/KDE applications and the KDE desktop. Currently Fedora uses Policy Kit One as default authentication mechanism, but KDE supports only old Policy Kit, which is already deprecated in Fedora. With Policy Kit One support Fedora KDE users/developers will be able to use its own Qt/KDE applications with nicer Qt API. The Authentication Agent dialog would match rest of desktop environment (Gnome one would be replaced). The KDE upstream would mean better adoption of Fedora in-house project.

KDE PulseAudio Integration

The popular KDE desktop will now integrate better with the default sound solution in Fedora, it will now allow the full capabilities.

There is new PulseAudio integration features available in Fedora 13

Phonon detects PulseAudio and no longer shows non-PulseAudio devices when PulseAudio is running.
PulseAudio includes a new module-device-manager which allows Phonon to manage PulseAudio devices.
Using the above, Phonon allows setting device priorities for the devices reachable through PulseAudio.
KMix now shows PulseAudio volumes, including per-application volumes, and allows moving applications between devices.
The traditional ALSA backend for KMix is still available, use export KMIX_PULSEAUDIO_DISABLE=1 to force its use even if PulseAudio is detected.

Those users who don't use PulseAudio are not affected by any of these changes.
KVM Stable PCI Address

The allow devices in KVM guest virtual machines to retain the same PCI address allocations as other devices are added or removed from the guest configuration. It allows the devices to be added or removed from the guest configuration. The feature would remove a significant issue with Fedora's virtualizationsupport for Windows.
NetBeans_6.8

Fedora 13 will rebase to NetBeans 6.8. NetBeans IDE 6.8 is the first IDE to offer complete support for the entire Java EE 6 spec and improved support for JSF 2.0/Facelets, Java Persistence 2.0, EJB 3.1 including using EJBs in web applications, RESTful web services, and GlassFish v3. It can be used to develop the latest JavaFX SDK 1.2.1, and for creating PHP web applications with the new PHP 5.3 release or with the Symfony Framework.
NetworkManager Mobile Status
ModemManager already has D-Bus methods to get the required information from various cards, but user needs to add some nm-applet icons for better cellular signal strength. They must compel nm-applet/NM listen for signal strength changes, or poll modem-manager for such changes while connected. With the feature it would be easier to use mobile broadband. Users would know know when their device has a signal and if they are roaming or not.

It's a boot method that uses very small images (iso, floppy, disk) to bootstrap a machine, which then contacts a remote server for boot information. In the long run this method might completely replace DVD downloads. The Fedora specific technology would provide additional boot options. The technology, gpxe that makes it possible can be burned to nic ROMs or BIOS.
Boost 1.41 Uplift

The new feature brings 1.41.0 of Boost to Fedora 13 along with BoostMPI. Boost would be built with CMake. The upgrade would allow bi-annual opportunistic syncing with upstream sources. The Boost development community is exploring alternate build and source code control approaches. Itincludes the use of more standard build and release management tools such as git and CMake.

The new way to build Boost allows two enhancements when compared to the current build system

Create some more libraries such as Boost MPI
Stay synchronized with the latest Boost versions more easily

Sync with upstream would keep Fedora updated.
Zarafa

Zarafa Outlook Sharing is a fully featured and stable groupware solution including a Outlook-like web interface. It would serve as a Microsoft Exchange replacement for Fedora. It's an Open Source Collaboration that integrates existing Linux mail server, native mobile phone support by ActiveSync compatiblity. It offers webaccess with through an Ajax interface with a look and feel like Outlook. In addition, itincludes IMAP4 and a POP3 gateway as well as an iCal/CalDAV gateway. Zarafa groupware solution would be using MAPI objects, and provide a MAPI client library as well as programming interfaces for C++, PHP and Perl. It is the first of its kind groupware and/or collaboration in the entire Fedora Collection.
Highlighted Updated Features

NFSv4 Default

This is again an update that changes the default NFS protocol to version 4. This would definitely improve the performance. In the version 4, server has state, which implies It can communicate with each NFS client. The server can issue things called delegations for files allow the v4 client to aggressively cache. It drastically cuts down on network traffic between client and server.
NFS Client IPv6

This updated feature would support mounting NFS servers over IPv6. There are many installations that already use IPV6. The new feature would provide the ability to mount via NFS over these networks. Solaris supports IPv6 for years. Linux might also support it.
Nouveau DisplayPort

Fedora 13 would offer enhanced support for DisplayPort in X and kernel drivers for NVIDIA hardware. DisplayPort offers a higher link bandwidth than dual-link DVI. Monitors can easily take advantage of this by providing higher resolutions, higher color depths, and higher refresh rates. The DisplayPort will also run at a lower voltage than DVI and LVDS, and uses lesser power. The future laptops will likely switch to embedded DisplayPort for the local panel for this reason. With this feature, Fedora users can take advantage of the the technical superiority of DisplayPort.
Yum Langpack Plugin

This yum plugin allows langpacks to be automatically installed for your native language when base packages with langpacks get installed. The plugin is expected to do the following

when user activates yum (eg through PackageKit) the plugin will check if langpacks are needed or available for the packages involved in the transaction
keep conditional lang support entries in comps for now and maybe drop them in a later release
package languages can be configured in .conf file

The users will get langpacks for their language installed automatically

I was playing around with the twitter API and I found a way to find the exact number of Twitter users.

Note: The number of twitter users is continuously increasing by dozens every second, however it will still be accurate at the time of this writing for the higher order digits.

The number of twitter users is 79.7 million at this time.

Note: This doesn't exclude the users who have been banned by the system or who opted to delete their account.

I haven't detailed the exact method for determining them as Twitter spammers may misuse the tecnique, though I suspect many of them already are.

The last twitter user at the time of this writing (will be obsolete even before the post is published) is Nancy MacKenzie ( @NancyMacKenzfn ).

The key question however is how many of these are active users.

Windows 7 is Strong, Choose The Free Upgrade

Next week, Microsoft is releasing Windows 7, a slick, much improved operating system that should go a long way toward erasing the bad impression left by its previous effort, Vista.

If you've been holding off on buying a new computer, Windows 7 will be a good excuse to get back into the game. And if you've been weighing a Mac versus a Windows PC, then you should know that "7" makes Windows more attractive, though not a clear-cut choice for everyone. Windows is now easier to use and better looking than it was before, while maintaining its core advantage of cheaper, more diverse hardware.

However, most PC users should not take the release of Windows 7 as a call to action, or feel that they have to run out and buy the software for use on a computer they're planning on keeping. The upgrade will most likely not be worth the time or money, much less the effort of hosting a Windows 7 "launch party" as Microsoft suggests.

Windows 7 will come in several versions. The one aimed at U.S. consumers is Home Premium, which will cost $120 if bought as an upgrade to XP or Vista. You can buy it as a download or on a disc. Beginning on Oct. 22, it will come installed on new PCs.

Here are some of its highlights:

— The taskbar — the strip of icons usually found at the bottom of the screen — now does more than show which programs are running. You can also stick icons for your favorite programs on it, to launch them quickly. It's fast and convenient, combining the best features of the old Windows taskbar and Apple's Dock.

— File folders can now be organized into "libraries." You can have a photo library, for instance, that gives you quick access to pictures in folders spread out over your hard drive, or even several hard drives. This is great because many applications don't automatically put files into Microsoft's My Documents and My Photos folders, and tend to deposit content in their own folders. The new arrangement also makes for easy backups.

— Like Vista, Windows 7 will ask you twice if you really want to make changes to your settings or install programs, for the sake of security. But Windows 7 does it less often, and the prompts can be turned off.

— Windows 7 can sense if you use more than one finger on your touch pad or touch screen, allowing for neat tricks such as spreading your fingers to zoom into a picture, just like on the iPhone. This is isn't revolutionary per se — computer manufacturers have bolted multitouch sensing on previous versions of Windows. But it does make it easier for them to include advanced touch capabilities, and many of them are planning to do so. That is what could really revolutionize how we use computers. I've tried laptops and desktops with touch screens, and found it nice to be able to directly tap links and buttons, bypassing the touch pad and mouse.

— For a lot of users, the step up to Windows 7 will also mark a transition to a 64-bit operating system. That means computers will now be able to use a lot more Random Access Memory, or RAM, for better performance in demanding applications such as video editing. Vista and XP came in 64-bit versions in addition to the regular 32-bit versions, but the XP version was never popular, and the Vista version became mainstream only last year. But 64 bits will be standard on Windows 7, installed on nearly all new computers.

Windows XP users have a lot more to gain by going to Windows 7. Vista introduced some great features, such as fast searches of the entire hard drive, that of course are present in 7 as well. Unfortunately, upgrading an existing PC from XP to 7 is not easy.

After upgrading, users will have to reinstall all their programs and find their files in the folder where Windows 7 tucks them away.

They may also have hardware problems. I found an old HP laser printer no longer worked with Windows 7. This isn't really Microsoft's fault or, specifically, a problem with the new operating system — HP just doesn't provide a 64-bit driver for that printer. A driver is a program that tells a piece of hardware how to work with an operating system.

If you do upgrade, I would still recommend tackling that transition head-on by installing the 64-bit version of Windows 7, which doesn't cost more. Microsoft recommends a minimum of 2 gigabytes of RAM to run it.

If your computer runs Windows Vista, I think it's hard to justify spending $120 for an upgrade. The new features are nice but hardly must-haves. For daily e-mail and Web surfing, they won't make much of a difference. Vista was much maligned when it arrived in early 2007 for being slow, buggy and annoying. Now, it really isn't that bad, because updates have fixed a lot of the problems.

However, if you bought a Vista-based computer after June 25, you should be eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 7 from the manufacturer, and I suggest taking advantage of it. Your computer likely already is running 64-bit software, so there should be no problems with drivers, and the upgrade is much easier than one from XP. Windows 7 can keep your installed programs and your files in their old folders.

In weeks of testing the final version of Windows 7 on five computers, I encountered only one serious glitch. The backup function simply didn't work on one computer. The error message was obscure as always, and troubleshooting on Microsoft's Web site provided no solution. I ended up using third-party backup software. Given that regular backups are essential for a home computer, one can only hope that this will be an unusual problem that gets fixed promptly.

Another disappointment is that Windows 7 doesn't seem to improve boot-up times. In my tests, it took slightly longer to get going on Windows 7 than with XP or Vista on the same computer. I don't think this should be a major issue, though — instead of shutting your computer down, use "sleep mode" instead. This function has improved a lot since XP, and most computers take about 10 seconds to wake up.

Perhaps the most exciting thing about Windows 7 is that it's inspiring computer manufacturers to try new things, and reviving old ideas like touch-enabled "tablet" PCs. It's breathing new life into the computer market. It just won't do much for old clunkers.

The release of Firefox 3.5 download came as the open source browser is proving an increasingly formidable challenger to Microsoft's Internet Explorer 8, which once had over 90 percent market share. In June Firefox has a 22.5 percent market share according to web metrics company Net Applications, behind Internet Explorer's 65.5 percent. Though Internet Explorer's share has been declining for some time, the slide has accelerated over the last year since Firefox released version 3.0.

Mozilla, the organization that distributes the open source browser, said the new version is twice as fast as the previous version, and also includes a "private browsing" feature, also called "porn mode," that allows users to hide their tracks when the option is turned on.

Other privacy options allow users to easily and selectively wipe their web history.

Mozilla claimed a world record for software downloads when the previous version was released a year ago. The organization said that even more users were downloading the new browser.

The Internet Etiquette. So many people still spend hundreds of words in emails trying to find meaning of the chat/online/net etiquettes that we netizens use often. Some similar incident happened to me lately. Someone in this universe of internet, whom I met online, came to me first asking about the words that I posted online, of course somewhere online. It was just regular online etiquette and believe me, it was so stupid to continue arguments with such people. That's how I realized after several exchange of conversations. Finally, that someone somehow admitted ignorance about these terms and showed some interest to learn . I would've taken it positively if that someone would have shown some interest to learn but instead kept arguing with me and that really pissed me off.

Not really, but you can have that dock in your Windows GUI. Drag and drop your favorite applications to the dock and you are all set.

You can layout your dock in any side; top,left,right,bottom of your screen.

Rocketdock in action

This nifty program is far more efficient than any other paid programs of the same genre which tried to mimic the Mac's GUI. To be true, it increased my efficiency while working.

Forget about lame Quick Launch, or any other Windows Shortcut tricks you've been using. This little software will do the magic.

Astonishingly, this is FREEWARE.

Gmail adds "Undo" Option for any mail sent

I don't make much mistakes but I've seen people cussing themselves like 'darn it', 'Oh shit!!!', 'What the f** did I do", .. these are some of the common phrases that you must have heard once in a while when they make mistakes. When it comes to sending emails, I thoroughly check twice before hitting 'SEND' buttons. Lots of people don't do. For them, here's the life saver feature that Google has recently added to it's Gmail. It's 'Undo' feature.

It's not activated by default. First, activate it.
- Check out the top most area in Gmail after logged in, click 'Settings', click 'Labs' and enable the 'Undo' feature. (click the image below to see how it looks)

Once activated, sign out, sign in. Voila, the 'Undo' option will be right there as soon as we send emails.

I tried to send dummy email..welllll.. to myself.

As soon as I clicked 'SEND' button, I saw 'Undo' link. Cheers!!!!! I clicked the 'Undo'.
And, my sending has been undone.It then took me to a 'compose mail' screen from where I disposed the mail simply clicking the 'discard' button.

Took a deep breathe, sipped in luke-warm red clover tea and felt glad to have this feature On.

Jackson Virus and Spam Attack The Internet

What the relationship between Michael Jackson and technology? Yes.. it's about there is Jackson virus and Spam that spread the cyber world. Security researchers warned Thursday of the increasing levels of viruses and spam using Jackson’s name to snare unsuspecting users.
One e-mail carries the subject line “Remembering Michael Jackson” was circulating with a worm in tow. The e-mail has a zip file attached that infects victims if downloaded.

“The e-mail, which claims to come from sarah@michaeljackson.com, says that the attached ZIP file contains secret songs and photos of Michael Jackson,” Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos, wrote on a blog. “However, the reality is that opening the attachment exposes you to infection - and if your computer is hit you

will be spreading the worm onto other Internet users.”

Cluley said that the malware also spreads via USB memory sticks. Another e-mail promises an exclusive look at a YouTube video of the “last work of Michael Jackson,” but instead installs a malicious program that steals passwords.

The Microsoft Official Antivirus 'Morro' Will be Released

Microsoft's Windows is the most loved OSvirus affected OS in the world. World's largest software producer is all set to rage a war against viruses with the introduction of its long-awaited free anti-virus service. On the market-front the product could be a direct offensive against the anti-virus giants Symantec Corp and McAfee Inc. Microsoft begins charity at home offering the early version of the product to its employees for testing. Microsoft would soon launch a trial or beta version of the anti-virus on its website. However, no specific date has been announced yet.

The announced saw Symantec and McAfee shares plunging by 0.5 percent and 1.3 percent on receptively, while Microsoft gained a 2.1 percent.

Investors were closely monitoring the free service and have code named it Morro after Brazil's Morro de Sao Paolo beach. It could hurl the sales of products from Symantec and McAfee, which generates a billions of dollars of revenue every year protecting Windows PCs from attacks by hackers.

According to Daniel Ives, an analyst with FBR Capital Markets, its a long-term competitive threat.

Microsoft has announced that Morro would be equipped with basic features to fight wide range of viruses. This would make it comparable to the lower end consumers products from Symantec and McAfee that are priced at $40 per year. The top sellers of these companies are security suites that include the features of encryption, firewalls, password protection, parental controls and data backup.

Microsoft had made its foray into the anti-virus market with Live OneCare that turned out to be a commercial flop. The free product Morro is basically a stripped down version of the OneCare. The company plans to stop the production of OneCare in November and said it might launch the product by the end of 2009.

Until Morro's beta is released, we can keep our fingers crossed for the products capability to take on its competitors.

Windows 7 Without Internet Explorer In Europe

Microsoft is to strip its Internet Explorer browser from the new version of its Windows 7 operating system that it sells in Europe, the company announced Thursday. Microsoft said the move was designed to meet criticism from European Union (EU) regulators who have launched an investigation into whether bundling the browser with the operating system is in breach of European anti-trust rules. "Given the pending legal proceeding, we've decided that instead of including Internet Explorer in Windows 7 in Europe, we will offer it separately and on an easy-to-install basis to both computer manufacturers and users," Microsoft said in a statement.

"This means that computer manufacturers and users will be free to install Internet Explorer on Windows 7, or not, as they prefer."

Windows 7 is scheduled to be generally available Oct 22. Ironically, Microsoft is making the changes as rival firms like Firefox, Apple Safari and Google Chrome chip away at Internet Explorer's once unassailable position.
