I’ve been meaning to put together a little compilation post of all my “war on women” stories from the latest wave of them. Only problem? This news cycle keeps spinning on and on and the stories keep coming, so at some point I just had to be “oh, well, here’s the load so far.” You’ll see them all below. The truth is right now, I’m burned out on this nonsense. It’s energizing, sometimes, to jump on a scandal and see my stories go viral and encapsulate people’s rage. I wrote about Occupy Wall Street for the Washington Post… and AlterNet had a rather wild and hopping book party to celebrate our really wonderful (really, I’m quite proud of it) book, “The 99%.” Obviously, the movement has upended my existence. On a basic level, it’s ironically vaulted me into at last becoming one of those busy, flitting-about 20something New Yorkers, a fate that I avoided for years. More importantly it’s changed the way I think, deeply so. Earlier in my incarnation as a feminist pop culture writer, I was regularly tutoring teenage girls both in Harlem on the Upper East Side, and they were universally obsessed with this new vampire series. Harry Potter was so over, they told me. So purely for research purposes of course I started reading Twilight, because I had a feeling it would be good fodder for my writing, and boy was I right—the books’ sexual politics are thesis-worthy. But I also didn’t come up for air for four or five days reading the hundreds of pages—and neither did any of the friends I passed the books onto. Simon and I went over to West Harlem Piers park in the wake of the hurricane, where, in imitation of our intrepid friend Zach who was there first, we took pictures and shot video standing in the wild wind. Above, the video…below, a slideshow. Meanwhile, my favorite state Vermont remains in real trouble. This story is just one example of how bad things are there. Keep the people of the Green Mountain State in your hearts; while there aren’t too many fatalities now, many are stranded or homeless and conditions for rescue are tough.
