It’s July 1 now, and some of you already know this: I’m officially leaving New York as of two months from today. Well, I’ll be back. But not until 2010, most likely. Starting in either the middle of September or the beginning of October, depending on a couple of timing and logistical issues (and following a few weeks of nomadism), I’m going to San Francisco for the rest of the year. I’m sticking with my job at CNET News, one of the most fun and fulfilling jobs on the face of the planet, and can’t thank my overlords enough for approving these bizarre travel plans.

I’ve never lived more than an hour away from NYC, so this is sort of awesome and thrilling. Most of the companies I cover are based in the SF region, so I’ll get much better face time. And while I do have personal reasons for wanting to spend some time away from here, I don’t want to get all James Murphy about it and talk about how New York sucks. Let’s face it: I’m a Northeast girl, and I’m coming back. I promise not to return laden with any not-really-true Bay Area stereotypes like new piercings or tattoos, strange political leanings, arrests for public nudity, weird Mission-slacker boyfriends (that one is dedicated to Rana), or a bloodstream full of myopic Silicon Valley Kool-Aid. Okay, that last one is a concern.

In the meantime I have some goals. Foremost is attaining that darned Gym Rat badge on Foursquare. Secondary is hitting up all those awesome new pizzerias that have been popping up before I decamp for a city where pizza is only consumed as a booze sponge. You know, just in case the recession or the Department of Health closes them all before I return.

Actually, this trailer gets me kinda excited because of his previous movie Southland Tales is such a beautiful failure. It’s like a tragic rock song. I’ve seen it 3 times, and for some reason, I have no idea why Southland Tales has such a hold on me… because, really, its a mess.

Here is one of those messy scenes, starring America’s Sweetheart JT.

Hmm, I don’t know. I loved DD and didn’t see Southland Tales because I heard it was awful. Cameron’s been in my good graces ever since Malkovich, and there’s a nice creepy element to the trailer. But the whole “put aside your morals and be rich or do the right thing and be poor” plot conundrum… in a movie titled “The Box”? I don’t know.

Dear animal lovers on Tumblr,

Please send my green-eyed lovemuffin Linus your good thoughts. He’s diabetic and seems to be very ill.

Some of you remember him as the thirty-pound spherical catball he used to be. After time and blood sugar regulation he trimmed down to a hefty-bellied but standard-sized purrmotor, and that was good; but now he’s a bag of bones, skinny beyond normalcy. He hasn’t eaten in a few days, he’s been throwing up, he’s moving slowly, his eyes look sunken and glassy, and his belly is growling in a way I’ve never heard from an animal. This morning we finally convinced him to drink some water, but he didn’t seem to have the energy to stand at his bowl; he tucked his paws under his chest and knelt, dipping his face in gently, covering his chin.

On the bright side, he’s still sweet and lovely in the way that first attracted us to him at the shelter over a decade ago; he could be weakly moaning in confusion, but when you come to him and pet his bony body he purrs just as strongly as he always does. You can hear him across the room.

Linus is a special cat. I know we all think our animals are special when they’re ours - and they are - but Linus is exuberant with kitteny friendliness, buzzing with a love that you can hear and feel. When he saw us at the shelter he literally reached through the bars to us. It’s that reach, the way he goes out of his way to show his love, that’s amazing about him.

Please help me hope he gets better. We love him so much.

This breaks my heart. Get well soon, Linus.
